Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance podcast with Hemma Lomax and Lisa Fine, sponsored by Corporate Compliance Insights. Over the past few months, the Department of Justice put forth the Whistleblower Pilot Program, and the update to the Evaluation of Corporate Compliance Programs. It was the perfect time to focus on how these impact whistleblower laws. Jane Norberg, who is a partner at Arnold & Porter and the former Chief of the Office of the Whistleblower and Mary Inman, who is a founding partner of Whistleblower Partners. Mary is also an advocate for the power of whistleblowers and is known for representing Facebook Files whistleblower Frances Haugen and Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz. They provide insight into what makes a credible and legitimate whistleblower, how the SEC reviews tips from whistleblowers and what we as compliance professionals can do to build effective programs. All focused on the review of all concerns that are raised, regardless of the source. They provide some thoughts about how to handle different situations before, during, and after an investigation, providing practical advice. The group discusses the new DOJ Whistleblower Pilot program and where it follows the past programs like the SEC program and where it is filling new gaps. One part of the program includes the 120-day requirement for reporting an issue, and they focused on what that would mean for organizations. Mary and Jane share their views on the requirements and the best practices and reference how most compliance professionals are using the DOJ Evaluation of Corporate Compliance to develop their programs, which means that an issue is investigated. In practical terms, following the ECCP requirement to investigate, and the pilot program has a “race to report,” is a challenge, and this is discussed in depth. Mary and Jane both provided “one thing you should know” to conclude the discussion. Both points are significant ones for anyone who is dealing with any point of the whistleblower or building a strong speak up/anti-retaliation culture. In today's episode, Lisa Fine speaks with Jane Norberg, a partner at Arnold & Porter. Jane is also the former Chief of the Office of the Whistleblower at the SEC, and she is one of the people who built that office into what it is today, both as Chief and before that, Deputy Chief. She is one of the leading voices on the whistleblower process, and an advisor to organizations in building best practices for organizations to address concerns. In March, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco announced a pilot program to compensate whistleblowers who report “significant corporate or financial misconduct” of which the DOJ was not aware. Jane talks about the SEC program and how it has succeeded. She also explains the similarities and differences between the not-yet-enacted DOJ program and the SEC program. Jane provides her perspective and insight as to why she thinks there is a delay from the DOJ as the initial 90 days have passed and how funding, staffing and other factors may contribute. Jane and Lisa also discuss the SEC reporting process, how tips come in globally from over 100 countries, and the importance of the Whistleblower program to deter and stop wrongdoing. This goes along with the statistics that indicate that 80% of whistleblowers raise concerns internally, most frequently to the person's manager, not to the Ethics and Compliance teams or the helplines. To that end, Jane provides practical advice to make sure that E&C teams are providing the right training for managers to identify issues and raise them appropriately. Supporting ethical decision-making is critical for every organization, but providing training to those who may have concerns is a key component of that. While practitioners think about this for company culture, Jane provides insight on the larger picture of how our internal work is related to the larger scope of whistleblower reporting. Topics Include: Jane's integral role as Chief of the SEC Office of the Whistleblower The DOJ pilot whistleblower program and the SEC program and the distinctions Global Impact of the SEC Whistleblower Program Practical advice for E&C professionals building and managing hotlines Resources: Join the Great Women in Compliance community on LinkedIn here.

Convenience stores are upping their food game and one concept is taking advantage of it. This week's episode of the Restaurant Business podcast A Deeper Dive features Jim Norberg, the CEO of the convenience-store chicken concept Krispy Krunchy Chicken. We had Jim on largely because convenience stores are getting a lot of foodservice business right now. Traffic at convenience stores is up 17% since before the pandemic, compared with 5% at quick-service restaurants—meaning that some of the lost traffic at restaurants is heading to the local gas station. One reason is the higher quality food c-stores are putting out now. Krispy Krunchy is taking advantage of that. Norberg is a former executive with McDonald's, and he is bringing a restaurant mentality to the concept. The brand is getting into third-party delivery and recently hired its first chief marketing officer in Alice Crowder. We talk with Jim about the company's rapid growth and how many locations it expects to go into this year alone. We talk about how that program works and what's driving interest in c-stores. We also talk about Krispy Krunchy's new marketing program and how it can market a concept located in other businesses. We're talking convenience-store chicken on A Deeper Dive, so please check it out.

A Trip down memory lane... Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are probably history's most famous folklorists. Their collection of folk tales – the Children's and Household Tales – is one of the world's most translated literary works. Living in a time of upheaval and war, the Grimm brothers were also passionate German nationalists. They insisted that Germans must reject alien regimes and only accept rulers who spoke their language and cherished their traditions.  The Brothers Grimm and the Making of German Nationalism (Cambridge UP, 2022) is the first book-length study of the Grimms' political attitudes and ideas. It shows how the Grimms believed that their groundbreaking philological knowledge of grammar and folk narratives allowed them to disentangle cultural and linguistic groups from each other, criticize imperial rule, and even counsel kings and princes. The brothers sought to revive a neglected Germanic culture for a contemporary audience, but they also wished to provide the traditional political elite with an understanding of the resurgent national collective. Through detailed analysis, Norberg reconstructs how the Grimms wished to mediate between culture and politics as well as between sovereigns and peoples. Jakob Norberg is a Professor of German at Duke University. He is the author of Sociability and Its Enemies (Northwestern University Press, 2014), The Brothers Grimm and the Making of German Nationalism (Cambridge University Press, 2022), and Schopenhauer's Politics (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming). His articles have appeared in venues such as PMLA, Arcadia, Cultural Critique, New German Critique, Textual Practice, Telos, and the Blackwell Encyclopedia of Political Thought. His book on the Grimms won the 2023 Best Book award of the Brothers Grimm Society of North America and a recent article, “Schopenhauer and the Injustice of Slavery,” won the 2023 essay prize of the Schopenhauer Society. Amir Engel is currently a visiting professor at the faculty of theology at the Humboldt University in berlin. He is also the chair at the German department at the Hebrew University. Engel studied philosophy, literature, and culture studies at the Hebrew University and completed his PhD. in the German Studies department at Stanford University. He is the author of Grshom Scholem: an Intellectual biography that came out in Chicago in 2017. He also published works on, among others, Jacob Taubes, Hannah Arendt, and Hans Jonas. He is currently working on a book titled "The German Spirit from its Jewish Sources: The History of Jewish-GermanOccultism". The project proposes a new approach to German intellectual history by highlighting marginalized connections between German Occultism, its Christian sources notwithstanding, and Jewish sources, especially the Jewish mystical tradition. But these apps “make my life easier,” I push back,“Convenience matters!” “But privacy is important,” explains Brockwell. "The government is purchasing all this data about us. They're creating records about all of us, and that's a really scary thing.” "That data is forever … You have no control over what societal norms might change in the next 10 years and that data suddenly becomes incriminating. You're basically making a bet that you and the people with the guns will always stay on good terms.” In my video above, she explains why that's not a good bet to make. . ———— To get our new weekly video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://www.johnstossel.com/#subscribe ————   https://youtu.be/rVsKWQp-sq4?si=5KWca35e1w7NCp8G Capitalism and Loneliness: What The Media Get WRONG John Stossel 893K subscribers 132,003 views Nov 28, 2023 Scaremongers tell us: capitalism makes us "feel lonely" and "empty inside." But Johan Norberg's new book, The Capitalist Manifesto, points out the many ways capitalism makes life better, including making people LESS lonely. ———— To get our new weekly video from Stossel TV, sign up here: https://www.johnstossel.com/#subscrib ———— "Every poll we're looking at shows that people say that they're less lonely in the most market-oriented societies,” Norberg tells me. The Human Freedom Index ranks countries according to how free, and market-oriented they are. Not only are people less lonely in capitalist countries, but Norberg points out that "if you increase freedom by one point, you reduce loneliness levels by six percentage points.” But I tell Norberg, "Under capitalism, people compete. Sounds divisive. Sounds like it would pull us apart.” "Feudalism, communism, fascism... that's divisive. That's all based on getting resources by taking them from somebody else. What capitalism does is that it forces us to think, 'what does the other guy want?'” says Norberg. That's because, under capitalism, to sell someone something, you have to please them. But their handouts harm the very people they are meant to help. “We've spent more on the war on poverty than all the military wars combined in the United States without any success.” The result? Increased dependency on government! Expanding the welfare system seems to be the government's main goal. It was maybe not done with evil intentions. It was done with the misguided notion that gain of function research was safe.” Gain of function research includes making viruses more deadly or infectious, in order to develop vaccines. Paul argues that gain of function is a risk to civilization. :We could wind up with a lethal virus that leaks out of a lab and kills half of the planet." The newest rules will raise the cost of new trucks by more than $50,000. The regulators say these rules are important to stop pollution. That's dumb, says Wanner, “In 1980, 1 truck produced as much as 60 trucks today.” “So, we want people to buy new trucks,” I ask? “You want people to buy new trucks,” responds Wanner. “But if you put these costs on us that we cannot afford, we're going to just run the older trucks.” That's something the regulators don't think about. In fact, there's a lot they don't think about. Their decision hurts truck sellers, won't stop pollution, could be unconstitutional, and will only get more expensive when California mandates "all electric." All that and more in the video above.   https://youtu.be/ERXkTh--okQ?si=Ruvv9q378H7k_QmI When Police Wreck Your Property and Leave You With the Bill John Stossel 893K subscribers 246,126 views Oct 10, 2023 What happens if police destroy your property while trying to catch a bad guy?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the Connors Institute at Shippensburg University! Since this Utterly Moderate episode is both our Christmas program and our 100th PODCAST EPISODE, we thought we would try to be as uplifting as possible. In that spirit, we are being joined by Johan Norberg, author of a number of books including Progress: Ten Reasons to Look Forward to the Future. In that book, Norberg presents extensive data documenting how the world has gotten much better over the centuries across several measures, including freedom, life expectancy, poverty, violence, hunger, sanitation, the environment, literacy, and more. The book helps us not only to avoid being so doom and gloom about the state of the world, but to identify the reasons why we have made so much progress in the first place, avoid derailing those efforts, and help us build on them for a better tomorrow. Will free markets save the world? In this video, IEA Head of Political Economy Kristian Niemietz sits down with Swedish author and historian of ideas Johan Norberg. In his latest book, Norberg argues that large sections of the political and economic establishment talk about the global economy as a geopolitical zero-sum game, where we have to fight to control new innovations, and introduce trade barriers. He states the case for capitalism and the vital role played by the free market in today's uncertain world. Volunteering improves psychological well-being. Team Rubicon has researched this positive effect, not just on the communities it serves, but also on the well-being of its 170,000 volunteers. The organization applies military expertise and speed to provide fast response and social support to those who have suffered a disaster. We learn from David Burke and Patti Norberg about the many benefits they have found with volunteering.   David Burke is the Chief Program Officer at Team Rubicon, an organization that was founded by US armed forces veterans in 2010 with the purpose of voluntarily joining together to work on missions in the aid of regular citizens who are suffering because of natural disasters. Patti Norberg PhD is a Professor of Marketing at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, and also a good friend of Tim Houlihan.   Team Rubicon is a veteran led humanitarian organization that serves people before, during and after disasters and crises. It's a movement of thousands of people that work domestically and internationally from mitigating the effects of fires, floods and natural disasters. They are instrumental in missions to rebuild people's homes, surge medical capacity and provide clean water.    From the offset, the purpose of Team Rubicon was not just to help disaster survivors, but also to support veterans' well-being after leaving the military. And Team Rubicon goes one step further by actually researching the effects on well-being and mental health.
