Finally! Musician (and wonderful human being) Joel Reader is back on the Geekscape schedule! I first met Joel in 1998 as a member of the iconic Bay Area rock band The Mr. T Experience (aka my favorite band). Since then, Joel has gone on to form bands like The Plus Ones and the Boston area Power Pop group The Fatal Flaw! The whole time, Joel has remained an active part of punk groups Pansy Division and legendary band The Avengers! And now Joel arrives on Geekscape to talk about the reissue of The Ones' first release as well as new music from The Fatal Flaw! Rock and roll! This week, Frank Portman — better known as Dr. Frank — sits in to dive into the creation of the fan favorite 1996 single "Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba" by The Mr. T Experience. Inspired by The Partridge Family, the song was initially imagined as a folk tune arranged by a rock band. Dr. Frank discusses how the lyrics explore themes of doubt and finding a place for “people like us.” He discusses the challenges of translating his original vision into the final recorded version and emphasizes the importance of connecting the live performance with the recorded music to create a cohesive experience for the audience. The episode also highlights the universal appeal of their music, bassist Joel Reader's contributions to the harmonies, and the unique mix of irony, humor, and emotion that captures the adolescent point of view in their lyrics. Dr. Frank also reflects on how his writing career extends from his songwriting, exploring similar themes and perspectives, and hints at the possibility of more music and shows in the future. Some great quotes from this episode… "I'm a sucker for a good laugh.” "One thing that happens when you just take the bare bones of a song that's good enough to stand on its own. And you just do it as unadorned as possible for whatever reason, because you can't afford to do it better or because you don't have the talent to do it better. That means you can actually recreate the exact thing on the stage." "It is interesting to think that it could have been maybe the outro music of The Partridge Family TV show." "It's not just the ba-ba-bas that do it. There's the changing from the halftime parts, which are kind of groovy, and then the faster parts, which are kind of exciting. There's a, again, not rational or intellectual, but there's a drama there between the highs and the lows that does actually work on a crowd." "You can play that song for a small child who doesn't even speak yet, and that child will get it. And I've seen it many, many times. And the only other anecdote about that is that we could tell when we first started playing it that it was working. And we just in our little clubs with audience five or six people, it would even work then." "Old bands never really break up. And, you know, as long as there's as long as there's one guy who was once in the band, there's still a possibility that you'll see him on tour. So I'm not sure when but I'm sure you haven't heard the last of me because, you know, like they say — too dumb to quit. That's me. So we'll see." Learn more about your ad choices. From the Bay Area to the Central Valley to the Redwood Forest, this punk rock was made for you and me. Since the late '70s, Northern California has been a hotbed of punk rock activity. San Francisco sat at the epicentre of the first wave, with bands like Crime, Dead Kennedys, Avengers, Chrome, The Mutants, and The Nuns bringing the house down at the legendary Mabuhay Gardens. East Bay bands like Green Day, Operation Ivy, Rancid, and The Mr. T Experience ruled the punk revival of the late '80s and beyond. But, all over the northern part of California, great bands sprouted up in cities like Stockton, Santa Cruz, Davis, and Fulton. This week, we'll cover some of the great punk singles from the area, from familiar favorites to obscure treasures. What better Third Lad for this assignment than Northern California alternative music legend Jeffrey Clark?!? Jeffrey got his start as the singer/songwriter in early '80s Stockton garage/psych/synth combo The Torn Boys, whose recordings were recently released by Independent Project Records as 1983. Following the demise of the band, Jeffrey departed for LA with Torn Boys bandmade Grant-Lee Phillips (later of Grant Lee Buffalo fame) and formed the moody, mystical, marvelous Shiva Burlesque, who released two LPs - their eponymous debut in 1987 and Mercury Blues in 1990. Jeffrey subsequently released two cinematic, gorgeous solo records - Sheer Golden Hooks in 1996 and If Is in 2009. But wait, there's more: This renaissance man also founded one of the most acclaimed film festivals in North America, the Nevada City Film Festival; he revitalized the legendary Independent Project Records with label founder/Savage Republic guitarist Bruce Licher; and, he co-produced the documentary Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement. Oh, and did we mention that he's practically a member of the Wu-Tang Clan?? Speaking of Louder Than You Think, you may recall our recent episode where we chatted with director Jed I. Rosenberg and co-producer Brian Thalken. We made sure to chat with Jeffrey about the film as well, so stay tuned for a separate mini-episode on Thursday for more of our discussion! Special thanks to Paul Richison for the amazing guest suggestion, and to Josh Mills from It's Alive! Media for the incredible coordination. Learn more about your ad choices. The Sleepy Boys bring make a call-back to the Let's Get Podcast with Holiday Memories. Our boys talk about two EXTREMELY Christmas-y records: The Mr. T Experience's "Everybody's Entitled To Their Own Opinion" and the Donkey Kong Country Soundtrack. And there's a bonus mix of holiday cheer at the end of the episode and a brief appearance of The Ghost of Christmas Past. What an ep!
Episode #369... Both bros are back with a special, or somewhat special, enjoying some holiday memories with plenty of "air time." All orifices popping off. The Smugglers make their most popular album with Mass Giorgini, plus the band hires infamous roadie Ska-T while embarking on the first wildly successful Lookout tour with the Mr T Experience. And Larry Livermore is everywhere.
Before we start, if you're company has a hard time explaining what it does you can hire me to do that in 60-90 seconds with an explainer animation. Go to drive80.com or email me at mike@drive80.com to learn more. Sicko was an American rock group from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1991. Exceptionally, the three-piece pop-punk group maintained a constant membership for every recording as a band. This line-up was Denny Bartlett (guitar, bass, vocals), Ean Hernandez (guitar, bass, vocals), and Josh Rubin (drums, brother of Aaron Rubin from The Mr. T Experience). Sicko released four full-length albums and five 7″ eps as well as a retrospective CD with unreleased and rare material, a released demo and a tour video. They also appeared on approximately fourteen compilations on labels such as Lookout! Records and Liberation Records. They once exchanged covers with Cub. The vast majority of their recorded output was recorded by Kurt Bloch of The Fastbacks and released on Seattle-based punk label eMpTy Records. One EP and the retrospective CD were released on Mutant Pop Records. Three Sicko songs were featured on the Xbox game Project Gotham Racing 2 alongside artists like The Flaming Lips and Princess Superstar. My guest today is Justin Perkins a mastering engineer based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin who has worked on remastering projects for The Replacements, En Vogue, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and mastering projects for Michael Franti & Spearhead, Tommy Stinson, The Gaslight Anthem, Smoking Popes, Anberlin, Screeching Weasel, The Mr. T Experience, and thousands of other independent bands and artists around the world. Before transitioning to mastering full-time he also spent time at Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison Wisconsin recording and mixing a number of projects, and has been working full-time in the audio field for nearly 20 years. His studio Mystery Room Mastering has been in business since 2009. Growing up and playing in bands in the midwest is what helped Justin formulate a career in audio and ultimately led to playing bass for a time in the band Screeching Weasel, as well as playing bass for Tommy Stinson's solo shows, and the relaunch of Tommy Stinson's post-Replacements band called Bash & Pop who released a new album in 2017 on Fat Possum Records and performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Aside from mastering tons of singles, EPs, and albums, Justin also masters nearly all the content for The License Lab which is a library music company based in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and recently started doing a monthly livestream for Steinberg Media to help both new and current users of WaveLab Pro get a better understanding of how to use it. Justin has also written a number of articles for the popular website The Pro Audio Files on the topic of mastering, preparing for mastering, and an overview of what types of master files you may need for various release formats. Frank Portman is better-known to listeners as "Dr. Frank," the musical moniker the singer, guitarist and founding member of The Mr. T Experience has used for close to four decades. Over the course of the seminal Berkeley punk project's long and accomplished run, the band has managed more than a dozen releases, performed all over the U.S. and Europe, and shared the stage with some legendary acts. Even though there have been lengthy breaks and lineup changes through the years, The Mr. T Experience and its ever-present leader are still releasing music, playing shows to packed rooms (in pre-pandemic times, at least) and influencing new generations of musicians along the way. Recently, My First Band host Tyler Maas had an opportunity to speak with Dr. Frank about The Mr. T Experience's impressive over-35-year run, some of the ups and downs the project has experienced through the years, and all his pre-MTX musical endeavors. Over the course of the conversation, Portman talked about the process of collecting "disparate" and hard-to-find Mr. T Experience songs for the third/final volume of its Shards series of releases (pre-order from Sounds Rad now!), the role college radio played in developing his musical taste as a kid, his stint in The Bent Nails in high school, and MTX's opportunity to open for Green Day on a European arena tour (during which audience members threw sandwiches at him). Before the interview's end, Dr. Frank also talked about his career as a novelist, where he feels The Mr. T Experience fits in the punk rock pantheon and much more. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and The Mr. T Experience ("You Alone").
In part 3 of their “Coming of Age” Set, Jay and Travis read through Frank Portman’s coming of age novel “King Dork”. Hear them gush over Dr. Frank’s previous work with the band Mr. T Experience and find out what they think about his story about navigating high school and solving family mysteries.
More of That pulls out all the stops with this palate cleanser episode and gets deep into the notorious "worst album of all time" by The Shaggs, Philosophy of the World! Does it really deserve such a designation? What makes music bad anyway? Who exactly are parents, and should they force their children to make a record to fulfill a prophecy? These questions and more answered within. I cannot stress enough: this one is full of bits, goofs, drops, and general tomfoolery. There also might be alcohol involved. It's a long one (total shocker), but it's jam-packed with that good content, so stick around til the very end! Trust me. Our opening song is "Never Say Never Again" by More of That. You can listen to us on all major streaming platforms and on [Bandcamp.](http://moreofthat.bandcamp.com) Closing music includes Mr. T Experience, Dead Milkmen, and an original composition by Blake. This week, Andy is joined by Chris Appelgren. Chris took the reins at Lookout Records in 1997 after founder Larry Livermore decided he wanted to move on from the label. Having worked for the label for many years and doing artwork for many of the bands on the label, it seemed like a great opportunity. Under his watch (along with co-owners Molly Neuman and Cathy Bauer), Lookout managed to keep serving up tasty punk rock records from label vets like The Mr. T Experience and Screeching Weasel, to more angular indie-rock bands like Pretty Girls Make Graves and Engine Down. Unfortunately, due to a downward trend in album sales, and being unable to fulfill some royalty obligations to some of the label's top selling bands (Green Day, Operation Ivy, etc), the label had to close shop in 2012. But man, what a run! Besides being co-owner of one of the most iconic punk rock labels of all time, Chris is also a musician. He was the front person for The Pattern and The Peechees, played drums in The Potatomen, among other projects. Nowadays, he continues to work with bands doing graphic art for the likes of The Once and Future Band, and also has a musical project with friends covering obscure songs from the 60s and 70s. During this episode, we discuss his time with Lookout Records, as well as his time performing in The Pattern. We also discuss some of his favorite artists and he gives me his 5 desert island albums. You can find The Pattern, The Peechees & The Potatomen on streaming services. Even when you have an opinion, state it later. 2. Rein yourself in. You are human BUT you need to learn how to keep a poker face, not everything needs to be let out 3. Do your work. You are there for a reason and you always need to 'show up' as a 'trooper'. 4. Reading and writing were an outlet, they helped. Find your outlet - Reading, Writing, Exercising anything 5. If you are doing anything, DO IT WELL! Live life and ENJOY it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tee-m2/message
Christian completes his very special two part dig into the SF Bay area music scene of the late ‘70's - early ‘90's with the second documentary being on East Bay Punk. Last week was the origins of Thrash metal. This week we have Corbett Redford director for the film, Turn it Around : The Story of East Bay Punk.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk explores Northern California's pivotal role in evolution of punk rock - the loud, intense and anti-authoritarian philosophy of music and politics that arose in the late 1970s. Early San Francisco Bay Area punk pioneers like Dead Kennedys, Avengers and Flipper as well as the Maximum Rocknroll fanzine helped take the punk underground global. As the once-vibrant local scene became wrought with violence, corruption and racism, punks over the bridge in the East Bay responded by creating a fun and inclusive style of punk that also carried on the region's tradition of radical thought. Banding together around Berkeley's all- volunteer 924 Gilman Club, this diverse collective of misfits created a do-it-yourself, no-spectators' petri dish for art & music that changed the Bay Area punk scene… and the world at large.Today, we know about some of the bands who emerged from this scene, like Green Day and Rancid, but their success is just the tip of the iceberg; the roots of this inspiring story go deep into the underground. Directed and produced by Corbett Redford, narrated by Iggy Pop and executive produced by Green Day, Turn It Around: The Story Of East Bay Punk is told by the people who were there. The story of East Bay punk rock unfolds from its unlikely beginnings, continues through its struggles, and triumphs with its raucous power continuing to be influential today.Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk features a diverse spectrum of musicians and artists who have all been impacted by or participated in the California San Francisco Bay Area punk music scene of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. During the production of our film, we conducted over 150 interviews around the United States and amassed over 500 hours of interview footage. This week we're joined by Dr. Frank. That means we talk about the Mr. T Experience and that is pretty awesome. Check it out! So Cool!
Frank has led punk band The Mr. T Experience in the Bay Area since 1985, and has also released three successful music-related books for teens since 2006. We discuss "Down With the Universe" from King Dork Approximately (2016), "Big, Strange, Beautiful Hammer" from Yesterday Rules (2004), and "More Than Toast" from Our Bodies Our Selves (1993). We conclude by listening to "Even Hitler Had a Girlfriend," a 2014 single by Dr. Frank & the Bye-Bye Blackbirds. Opening/closing music: “Danny Partridge” from Everybody's Entitled to Their Own Opinion (1986). Learn more at frankportman.com. Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. Like our Facebook page.
Frank Portman is an author of two Young Adult (YA) novels King Dork and Andromeda Klein with a sequel to King Dork due in December. He also fronted the pop-punk band Mr T Experience over two decades. Assistant Producer Jeffrey Sprague spoke to him about the struggles of a touring band, riding the wave of Green Day, and how he was launched into one of his dream jobs, being a novelist.
