Should we turn California trees into wood pellets to be burned in foreign power plants? That's the proposal being brought forward by Golden State Natural Resources (GSNR), a nonprofit organization formed by Rural County Representatives of California and Golden State Finance Authority. GSNR has just released their draft environmental impact report for the project, which proposed two wood pellet factories (one in Lassen County and another in Tuolumne) that will draw biomass from roughly a 100 mile radius around the plant. Those factories will turn woody biomass into pellets, which will be shipped by rail to Stockton where the pellets will be loaded onto ocean-going ships to be delivered, likely to foreign power plants where they will be burned for energy. What's Humboldt's connection? Humboldt County's own Supervisor Rex Bohn sits on the Board of Directors for GSNR and biomass from Humboldt may end up be turned into wood pellets. This proposal has drawn concern from environmental groups worried about the greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and impacts to forest health from the project. Nick Joslin of the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center and Rita Vaughn Frost of the Natural Resources Defense Council join the show to discuss their concerns with the project.Support the show

“A proper Christian life has three aspects: fighting the good fight against Satan and his kingdom of darkness for the interests of God's kingdom; running the course for the carrying out of God's economy according to His eternal purpose; and keeping the faith for participation in the divine riches in God's economy. In this Paul set up an adequate pattern for us.” (Witness Lee, Holy Bible Recovery Version, 2 Tim. 4:7, note 1, Living Stream Ministry) This week we conclude the special series titled, “Becoming a Timothy for the Lord's Recovery,” with speaking from brother Ron Kangas encouraging us to finish the course measured out for us and to be poured out as a drink offering for God's satisfaction and the saints' delight. This is the last of six messages given at a college conference in Tuolumne, California in October 2001.
“Whatever one loves, his whole heart, even his entire being, is set on and occupied and possessed by. This is crucial! Whether there would be a day of glory in the church's victory or grievous days of the church's decline depends altogether on what kind of lovers we are...” (Witness Lee, Holy Bible Recovery Version, 2 Tim. 3:2, note 2, Living Stream Ministry) This week we continue the special series titled, “Becoming a Timothy for the Lord's Recovery,” with speaking from brother Ron Kangas on our need to become a certain kind of person and two characteristics of the love required to maintain the victorious standard of the church. This is message five of six given at a college conference in Tuolumne, California in October 2001. On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson delves into the wonders of Tuolumne County with insights from three area insiders. First, Johnson chats with Madi Broxham, co-owner of Local Collective, a vibrant shop in downtown Sonora that showcases more than 50 makers from Tuolumne County. Broxham describes her inviting boutique/eatery, and offers recommendations including the Cookies and Confluence, an Oreo-espresso milkshake. Broxham goes on to describe Sonora, a one-stoplight mountain town nestled among green rolling hills and steeped in history. Offering insider tips, she highlights must-see attractions, family-friendly activities, and dining and lodging options in the area. Next up, Johnson explores Columbia State Historic Park with interpreter Caleb Masquelier. “If you walk into the park now, you're going to see the largest collection of Gold Rush–era buildings in the state of California,” Masquelier explains. The immersive state park experience features a historic stagecoach and staff who wear period-correct attire. Masquelier also discusses the park's educational programs, from captivating gold mining demonstrations to immersive historical tours. Lastly, Johnson speaks with Elisabeth Barton, co-owner of Echo Adventure Cooperative, which offers socially and environmentally sustainable guided adventures in Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada. Barton highlights the county's diverse terrain, from its lush valleys to towering peaks: “You go all the way from 1,000 feet of elevation to 10,000 and above.” She goes deep on Echo Adventure Cooperative's bespoke outdoor experiences, including fly fishing, backpacking, rafting, snowshoeing, and more. Barton passionately discusses their dedication to accessibility through their adaptive tours, specifically designed for individuals seeking accessible activities and community building.
“But in a great house there are not only gold and silver vessels but also wooden and earthen; and some are unto honor, and some unto dishonor. If therefore anyone cleanses himself from these, he will be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, useful to the master, prepared unto every good work.” (2 Tim. 2:20-21) This week we continue the special series titled, “Becoming a Timothy for the Lord's Recovery,” with speaking from brother Ron Kangas on the importance of the word vessel. To become a Timothy is not first a question of our usefulness but a question of the kind of vessel we will be. This is message four of six given at a college conference in Tuolumne, California in October 2001. “And the things which you have heard from me through many witnesses, these commit to faithful men, who will be competent to teach others also.” (2 Tim. 2:2) This week we continue the special series titled, “Becoming a Timothy for the Lord's Recovery,” with speaking from brother Ron Kangas on the need for Timothys to not only continue the line of recovery, but also perpetuate the line through faithful ones until the Lord comes. This is message three of six given at a college conference in Tuolumne, California in October 2001. California's newest state park is named Dos Rios in Stanislaus County. Also, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in a pivotal case about homelessness. Finally, an exhibit about the unique history of women and tattoos in Old Sacramento. New State Park ‘Dos Rios' in Stanislaus County California's newest state park Dos Rios will open on June 12 in Stanislaus County. Located along the Tuolumne and San Joaquin rivers about eight miles west of Modesto in the Central Valley, it's the first state park acquired since 2014. California State Parks Director Armando Quintero joins Insight with more about what the public can expect to see, what is still being developed, the input from tribal communities, as well as how this floodplain restoration project will restore habitat for threatened and endangered wildlife. Supreme Court Hears Landmark Homelessness Case The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments Monday on what some are calling the most important case about homelessness in decades: Johnson v. Grants Pass. The case comes from a 2018 lawsuit challenging an ordinance approved by the small city in Southern Oregon that made it illegal for unhoused residents to camp on public property in the city. A ruling is not expected until June, but the case could have wide-ranging implications. Leslie Gielow Jacobs is an Anthony Kennedy Professor at McGeorge School of Law and joins us with a breakdown of Monday's oral arguments. Marisa Kendall is a Homelessness Reporter for CalMatters and explains the arguments on both sides. Marisa also provides a breakdown of a recent state audit which found that California fails to track its homelessness spending or results. Women Tattoo Exhibit at Sac History Museum An ongoing exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum called Tattooed & Tenacious chronicles the stories of tattooed women throughout California's history. The museum's Executive Director Delta Pick Mello and Experience Manager Alexandra Kowalski talk about the exhibit - which continues until July 28 - as well as how it coincides with Photography Month Sacramento.
“For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and of love and of sobermindedness.” (2 Tim. 1:7) This week we continue the special series titled, “Becoming a Timothy for the Lord's Recovery,” with speaking from brother Ron Kangas on the need for thousands to be raised up as today's Timothys. These ones stand in the gap as the bridge between the apostles with their ministry and the churches for the reality of the Body of Christ. This is message two of six given at a college conference in Tuolumne, California in October 2001. The original recording can be found at: https://ageturners.org/becoming-a-timothy-for-the-lords-recovery/
“You therefore, my child, be empowered in the grace which is in Christ Jesus; And the things which you have heard from me through many witnesses, these commit to faithful men, who will be competent to teach others also.” (2 Tim. 2:1-2) Starting this week for the next six weeks, we bring you a special series titled, “Becoming a Timothy for the Lord's Recovery,” with speaking from brother Ron Kangas in Tuolumne, California from October 19-21, 2001. By going through Second Timothy verse by verse, brother Ron conveys the heavy burden for us to become a certain kind of person, a Timothy, as the continuation of the present ministry for the Lord's recovery in its final phase. This is message one of six. The original recording can be found at: https://ageturners.org/becoming-a-timothy-for-the-lords-recovery/

To explore what it means to be human, Ben and Tao play with a pussy - a personified cat with an AI drone sidekick - while befriending wannabe artistic bipedal robots in feline post-apocalyptic, post-Homo sapiens adventure tale, Stray. It's not all highfalutin social commentary though, they do get to remote detonate mutant bacteria with a light gun strapped to their teeny weeny cat vests. Analysis includes discussion of dystopian storytelling and tropes, the role of animals in games, children's storybooks, whether art is a uniquely human venture, Tom Hanks, prison escapes in games, plus Ben shares why he's not fond of cats or domesticated animals in general. As usual, some major story spoilers towards the end of the pod. If you're going to play it, it's recommended you do so before listening.Content Warning: PEGI 12. Cursing. Animal cruelty. Egregious cockney accents.Clarifications:* All music for Stray was composed by Yann van der Cruyssen* The collective noun for cats is, apparently, a ‘Clowder'. Doesn't roll off my tongue either. The collective noun Ben used, ‘Posse', is ‘a group of people armed with legal authority', for instance, policemen.* The Road is a dystopian novel by Cormac McCarthy. There's nothing ‘basic' about it. Ben regrets the term!* The book Tao is clutching for is not ‘The Earth Remains', an entirely different and unrelated novel by Shelley Burchfield, but sci-fi classic, Earth Abides, a 1949 American post-apocalyptic science fiction novel by George R. It tells the story of the fall of civilization from deadly disease and the emergence of a new culture with simpler tools.* Kurt Zouma's personal contact details are… not really going to be published here. Eureka! While looking for a helping of Rice-A-Roni and a ride on a trolley car, “Surveyor Says!” The NSPS Podcast struck up a conversation with Warren Smith, L.S., Tuolumne County Surveyor and just happens to be the President of the California Land Surveyors Association (CLSA). He recently sat down with Tim Burch to discuss several topics central to surveying in the Golden State, including monument preservation after the devastating wildfires, effects of shifting tectonic plates and the role of the surveyor, and how membership in your professional organizations leads to more public awareness for the surveyor. Warren also shared his experiences of promoting “National Surveyor's Week” on the municipal, county, and state levels with his fellow surveyors and technicians. NSPS would like to thank Warren and his fellow CLSA officers and members for the recent passage of an affiliate membership agreement between our organizations. We appreciate the effort completed to make this partnership happen. Thanks for listening to the “Surveyor Says!” podcast, and subscribe wherever you listen to your episodes.

We will also co-direct with Antoinette May in presenting the Gold Rush Writers Conference in Mokelumne Hill, Oct. 7-9, 2022. Usually the conference is the first weekend in May every year. Manzanita publishes works by regional writers and those with a connection to the Mother Lode and Sierra, but we are not limited in that scope. MWP also prints a series of literary community anthologies that represent writers representing this region. The Voices of Wisdom Anthologies reflect the senior memoir writing project, collecting the stories of the elders and archiving and sharing them. Over 50 writers and artists participate in publishing, coming from work that has been written the prior year. Backcountry Adventures Up first, join me and Gabaccia as we talk about the backpacking trips we took at the beginning of September. Barry and I backpacked 54+ miles through the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne in Yosemite National Park and Gabaccia completed the Collegiate West from Twin Lakes to Monarch Pass (also part of the Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide Trail) for a whopping 76 miles! We'll be talking about how we picked our trails, what we did to prepare, what food we ate, what gear we brought, and more.

We know it's been a while but... the weather has been really good, and we know a couple climbers with a sail boat. In today's episode we found ourselves on location at a campground near Lions Head, Ontario, during a climbing trip. We recorded on a wet morning before going out climbing, in front of a live studio audience (of one.) Anna tries to tell a story of her being unreasonable while climbing, we talk about how seeing the eclipse was totally worth it, and the muggles we saw in Tuolumne posing as rock climbers. Once again, we talk about dirt bags, poverty tourism, and how cool it is to be a climber. Steve and Anna get existential about fear, risk, adventure, childhood, and the call of the void... that little voice inside you that says, "lettttttt gooooooo". We end the show off with a little talk about funny route names, and get inappropriate about Tom Randall, Alex Honnold, and of course, our listeners. We love you all World famous climber, Bear Grylls, joins us throughout. ***Stickers*** If you want some, just ask!
