We sit down with renowned investigative journalist Joyce Singular, co-author of Presumed Guilty, the groundbreaking book that challenged the media's rush to judgment in the JonBenét Ramsey case. With decades of experience in forensic and investigative journalism alongside her late husband, Stephen Singular, Joyce reveals her take on the case, and new details since appearing in the 2024 Joe Berlinger Netflix special, 'Who Killed JonBenét'? We dive into her investigative career, the disturbing truths about child exploitation that shaped their research, and why she believes the real story behind JonBenét's murder is far more complex than the tabloids ever told us.Buy 'Presumed Guilty':https://www.amazon.com/Presumed-Guilty-Investigation-Culture-Pornography/dp/1893224007Website:https://stephensingular.com/Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/t6beJdgNy30?si=5IbHV-z3sggXUgnI Hosted on Acast. New York Times bestselling author Stephen Singular provides an inside look at the Mormon polygamist sect that made headlines in 2008 for coercing young girls into marriage, and the story of their ruthless leader, Warren Jeffs. As the self-proclaimed prophet of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints, Warren Jeffs held sway over thousands of followers for nearly a decade. His rule was utterly tyrannical. In addition to coercing young girls into marriages with older men, Jeffs reputedly took scores of wives, many of whom were his father's widows. But in 2007, after landing on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, Jeffs's reign was forcefully ended. He would be imprisoned for committing rape as an accomplice. In When Men Become Gods, Edgar Award–nominee Stephen Singular traces Jeffs's rise to power and the concerted effort that led to his downfall. Newly updated, it describes the controversial 2008 raid on Jeffs's Texas compound and the fate of the 439 children taken from the sect. It offers readers a rare glimpse into a tradition that's almost a century old, but has only now been exposed.Buy the book here https://amzn.to/44I7CeXOppermnan Report seriously needs your support during this seasonal low in radio broadcasting. You can join Pareon at https://www.patreon.com/oppermanreportOr Paypal a dobnation to Oppermareport@gmail.comDonate button with other options at oppermanreport.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Jonbenet: Presumed Guilty ////// Episode:722Part 1 of 1 www.TrueCrimeGarage.com This week we are joined in the Garage by Stephen and Joyce Singular. The Singular's have been investigating the JonBenet Ramsey murder case since early 1997. Stephen Singular's 1999 book Presumed Guilty: An Investigation of the JonBenet Ramsey Case, the Media, and the Culture of Pornography is an eye opening read. In which, Singular discusses some of the lesser known characters of the case, his findings, and magnifies the problems with the murder investigation. An updated Kindle version was released in 2016 with new information and some intriguing leads. Rundown - Intro - 00:35 Judith Berg - 16:52 Troubadour Dave Gunders - 39:24 "My Dad" by Dave Gunders - 57:28 Henry Gunders - 01:01:00 Harold Dubinski - 01:36:40 Chicago Tribune Covers Alan Berg - 02:55:19 Outro - 03:03:40 The show begins with the host's review of POTUS on ABC on Friday night. Many mistakes and misperceptions made in that interview are a blessing in disguise. Kudos to Stephanopoulos, who played it straight down the middle. Let's think about all the Democrats who can beat Trump decisively. Which is what is needed in 2024. Judith Berg weighs in once more following the fortieth anniversary of the assassination of her ex-husband, Denver radio talk show legend Alan Berg. Listen to how disturbed Judith was by Peter Boyles and his account of events in the Denver Post. There was much to learn from what Boyles wrote and his omitted facts. https://www.denverpost.com/2024/06/16/alan-berg-antisemitism-assassination-denver-shooting-neo-nazi-white-supremacist/ Boyles and Berg were rivals and competitors. There'd be a crossover when they had adjoining slots, and the two grew up in radio together. But Berg was sober in Denver and Boyles in his “nightmare years.” Berg hung out with loyal friends like David Savitz and Al Zinn outside work and he stayed close to Judith. They had dinner his last night. Recall Episode 101, where Judith Berg explains how Peter Boyles called her a “k*ke” not long after Berg had died. Boyles hates Stephen Singular's fine book, "Talked to Death," which tells the truth about Berg's life and relationships. This podcast does the same, identifying the late talk show host's true friends. https://coloradosun.com/2024/07/02/alan-berg-nazi-opinion-silverman/ On Episodes 70 and 78, we had a surplus of greatness, including Harold Dubinski in Craig's Lawyers' Lounge using colorful Texas language to describe his old boss, attorney Al Zinn and his old pal and frat bro, Alan Berg. We got to hear them on KOA radio. Harold brings the late Alan Berg and Al Zinn back to life. Henry Gunders is still alive! He was born on June 30, 1924 in Munich, where he was a star athlete. But he was a Jew named Gunderheimer, and soon, many members of his family and he escaped. That's how he became a military man fighting Nazis in WWII and became our Troubadour's Dad. ”They killed the mockingbird,” Boyles told the media on the day after the shooting. Gone was Boyles' competitor on AM mornings. Gone was the guy who'd hogged the spotlight on 60 Minutes. According to the Chicago Tribune, Boyles put on quite a show on the witness stand as Denver's new king of talk radio. https://www.chicagotribune.com/1987/11/10/rightist-hate-groups-put-on-defensive/

Guest: Stephen Singular: Legacy of Deception: An Investigation of Mark Fuhrman and Racism in the LAPDIn the early of investigating the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman, L.A.P.D. Homicide Detective Mark Fuhrman uncovered evidence destined to become the cornerstone of the prosecution's case in the trial of O.J. Simpson. But as the elaborate legal epic unfolded, Fuhrman himself-his character and professional conduct - far overshadowed the impact of his evidence. What emerged in the public eye, though shielded from the eyes of the jurors, was an appalling history of planting evidence, beating up suspects, virulent racism and anti-Semitism acted out behind the safety of a badge. While the defense attempted to capitalize on the heavily publicized information about Fuhrman, prosecutors scrambled to maintain courtroom focus on the actual defendant.Meanwhile, journalist Stephen Singular took on the task of infiltrating the police department crime lab in search of the truth. What he discovered earned him a starring role on the glittery defense team as he outlined for them a means of proving that the defendant's blood actually could have been planted at the crime scene. With this demonstration as a springboard, the defense scored a victory that astonished the entire world. But had a renegade cop actually planted the blood or not?In Legacy of Deception, Stephen Singular disassembles the wall of deception constructed by the L.A.P.D. to reveal a scenario far more sinister than anything that emerged in the course of the trial chilling proof that true innocence was rare or nonexistent in this nightmarish case.http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=adbl_dp_by_aut?_encoding=UTF8&field-author=Stephen%20Singular&search-alias=booksBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes the return of Stephen Singular, Suspected White Supremacist. An author of "25 non-fiction books, many of them about high-profile criminal cases, Singular has also written sports and business biographies and social commentary. He co-authored with his wife, Joyce, their two most recent true crime titles." We spoke to Mr. Singular back in 2021 during our study of the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Singular wrote about that case and the connection to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing. Now, that we're studying the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, we'll investigate two of Singular's crime-writing ventures. Presumed Guilty: An Investigation of the JonBenét Ramsey Case, the Media, & the Culture of Pornography is his examination of the six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey murder, which happened at the end of 1996 right down the road from Littleton, Colorado. And we'll discuss his book, The Spiral Notebook: The Aurora Theater Shooter and the Epidemic of Mass Violence Committed by American Youth, a tacky exploration of the 2012 Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting by White Terrorist James Holmes. Singular includes quite a bit about Columbine within this text. Therefore, Gus was taken aback when Singular claimed that he's "no expert" when it comes to high school bombing/shooting. Singular promotes the tired lie that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were victimized White boys. In fact, Singular mentioned Dave Cullen's book, which we just completed. Cullen also dismisses the idea that these two cowardly killers were bullied. Singular also includes a sloppy paragraph about Miriam I. Carey "ramming" a barrier in Washington, D.C. before she was killed by enforcement officials. The Washington Post and even Gus's BFF Amy Goodman highlighted that Carey, a black mother, did not "ram" a barrier. White people lied about this from the day of her killing. #MissingWhiteWomanSyndrome #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#
Journalist Stephen Singular, a New York Times bestselling author, has written books about some of the most high-profile crimes in recent American history: the O.J. Simpson case, the JonBenet Ramsey case, and the saga of the BTK serial killer. Until now, he's probed human violence from the outside, documenting other people's stories. In The Heart of Violence, he turns the lens inward, combining true crime with a personal spiritual journey that examines the roots of violence from a radically different perspective. He explores the long-term effects of the war that shaped his father's life (and helped shape his own), while venturing far beyond the boundaries of conventional journalism. Neither he nor the reader could have imagined where this quest would lead him.
On June 18th 1984, Denver radio talk show host, Alan Berg was assassinated in front of his house, his bullet-riddled corpse found in his driveway in a pool of his own blood. Berg was an acerbic, gonzo personality who was an equal opportunity annoyer. Christian or Jew. Liberal or Conservative. White or Black. NAACP or KKK. All were fodder for his popular radio show. He could be described as a cross between Groucho Marx and Tom Hanks' character in the film: “A man called Otto.” A colleague once said of him: “Meeting Alan for the first time was like seeing an 8-piece band come through the door playing out of tune.” A truly one-of-a-kind individual, he never shied away from a debate no matter how serious or mundane the subject was. On one program he would spend an hour berating an antisemite caller or challenging a priest on the topic of “Sex without Pleasure.” The next day he would open the floor for a discussion on which way to roll your toilet paper- over or under. Callers would respond for hours some got so angry they hung up! So who assassinated Alan Berg? Was it as simple as an irate listener or was it something much more sinister. To help us answer that question, I turned to author and journalist, Stephen Singular. His book on Alan Berg, TALKED TO DEATH, was used as background for the Oliver Stone movie, TALK RADIO, written by and starring Eric Begosian.

Joe also calls out the Big Lie and will not toe Trump's party line. He's a successful businessman and boss. Colorado needs a responsible GOP. Unlike many Republicans engaged in willful blindness, Joe O'Dea may call out Team Trump criminality if proven by the January 6 Select Congressional Committee. When Men Become Gods: Mormon Polygamist Warren Jeffs, His Cult of Fear, and the Women Who Fought Back In When Men Become Gods, New York Times bestselling author Stephen Singular casts a light on a dark corner of religious extremism. He reveals a group of fundamentalists operating in the present-day United States, where teenage girls are kept in virtual bondage in the name of upholding the "sacred principle" of polygamy. As the leader and self-proclaimed prophet of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints, a sect of Mormonism based in isolated southern Utah, Warren Jeffs held sway over thousands of followers for nearly a decade. His rule was utterly tyrannical. In addition to coercing young girls into polygamous marriages with older men, Jeffs reputedly took scores of wives, many of whom were his father's widows. Television, radio, and newspapers were shunned, creating a hidden community where polygamy was prized above all else. But in 2007, after a two-year manhunt that landed him on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, Jeffs's reign was forcefully ended. He was convicted of rape as an accomplice for his role in arranging a marriage between a fourteen-year-old girl and her nineteen-year-old first cousin. In When Men Become Gods, Edgar Award nominee Stephen Singular traces Jeffs's rise to power and the concerted effort that led to his downfall. It was a movement championed by law enforcement, private investigators, the Feds, and perhaps most vocal of all, a group of former polygamous wives seeking to liberate young women from the arranged marriages they'd once endured. The book offers new revelations into a nearly impenetrable enclave---a place of nineteenth-century attire, inbreeding, and eerie seclusion---providing readers with a rare glimpse into a tradition that's almost a century old, but that has only now been exposed.

Guest: Stephen Singular: Legacy of Deception: An Investigation of Mark Fuhrman and Racism in the LAPD In the early of investigating the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman, L.A.P.D. While the defense attempted to capitalize on the heavily publicized information about Fuhrman, prosecutors scrambled to maintain courtroom focus on the actual defendant. Meanwhile, journalist Stephen Singular took on the task of infiltrating the police department crime lab in search of the truth. What he discovered earned him a starring role on the glittery defense team as he outlined for them a means of proving that the defendant's blood actually could have been planted at the crime scene. With this demonstration as a springboard, the defense scored a victory that astonished the entire world. But had a renegade cop actually planted the blood or not? In Legacy of Deception, Stephen Singular disassembles the wall of deception constructed by the L.A.P.D. to reveal a scenario far more sinister than anything that emerged in the course of the trial chilling proof that true innocence was rare or nonexistent in this nightmarish case. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=adbl_dp_by_aut?_encoding=UTF8&field-author=Stephen%20Singular&search-alias=books

The internet can certainly make daily tasks more convenient. We can do our shopping online, apply for jobs online, and even look for love online. But how can you know for sure that someone you meet on the internet really is who they say they are? Former FBI profiler John Douglas of Mindhunter fame has teamed up with true crime author Stephen Singular to bring us a cautionary tale of multiple women who thought they met the man of their dreams online, only to find themselves in a deadly nightmare. You've probably never heard of John Robinson, who made history for being the first serial killer known to find his victims on the internet. I certainly hadn't heard of him, even though he was a very, very prolific criminal who fooled dozens of unsuspecting victims. Join me and my guest Carrie Kerskie, a private investigator and fraud expert, as we talk about romance scams, phishing attacks, and how to stay safer online. After many months, we kickstart the OFD Bookcast to finally finish "Notre Dame's Greatest Coaches" by Stephen Singular and Moose Krause. Seeing as how there has been a giant stretch of time between the last Bookcast episode and this one, a couple of things to keep in mind: Maybe go back and listen to the 6 previous installments if this is new to you. My dog (Bo Bowower) made things a little difficult at times. It's been almost as lo since I did a solo recording, and there are a few pauses to get my ducks in a row. So now that we have that out of the way, here's some of the things discussed from Chapters 15 and 16: Moose was comically giddy to see practice after a loss. Joe Moore was talked about quite a bit - but not nearly enough. A brief clapback at Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth" and Singular's usage of it in this book. The end of Ara. The physical toll of coaching the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. How Ara just forced Johnny Ray to coach in South Bend. A Frank Leahy impression just for Brendan's sweet ears. Ara's obsession with detail. Messing with Digger Phelps. Dave Casper just wanted Ara to leave him alone. And plenty more weaved in and out of the show... and Bo trying to bust out of the office. A journalist and author, Singular has a lengthy history of writing non-fiction books that investigate White Supremacist violence. Because of his earlier writing on the White Supremacist murder of Alan Berg, Singular was contacted in 1994 by an anonymous source who told him that similar Racist elements were involved in the O.J. Simpson case. The source detailed how Mark Fuhrman planted a bloody glove on the property of Mr. Simpson and offered background information on Fuhrman's antiblack beliefs and violent history. Singular shared his information with the Simpson defense team and published a book about his experience: Legacy of Deception: An Investigation of Mark Fuhrman and Racism in the L.A.P.D. Erick Bee and Vicki V welcome authors Stephen Singular & Joyce Singular to talk about true crime stories, serial killers and their paranormal experiences along the way
What's scarier than a murderer? Someone with the charisma to compel others to kill for them . . . or to kill themselves. Meet these cult leaders--and get an inside look at their beliefs and how they controlled others. Some cults, led by leaders like Charlie Manson, Jim Jones, and David Koresh, are notorious. But others are less well known, such as Shoko Asahara and his doomsday cult, Aum Shinrikyo, who orchestrated the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway. Or Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret, who founded the Order of the Solar Temple, a doomsday cult that led to the death of 51 members by murder or suicide. Then there is Marshall Applewhite, leader of Heaven's Gate, who, along with 38 followers, killed themselves in the belief that the Hale-Bopp comet signaled the arrival of a spaceship that would transport them to a higher plane of existence. What makes cult leaders so compelling is their often-unfathomable power over their adherents. Why do people kill others or themselves for a questionable set of beliefs? Killer Cults tells the stories behind both famous and unfamiliar cults, and the people behind them. Across a series of profiles, we learn the jaw-dropping truth behind some of the most mystifying and deadly cults, and their leaders, all of whom led their followers down a dark, murderous path. KILLER CULTS: Stories of Charisma, Deceit, and Death-Joyce and Stephen Singular.
The OFD Bookcast makes its triumphant return after weeks of "I'll get to that in a minute." We are trucking through the book Notre Dame's Greatest Coaches by Stephen Singular and Moose Krause - or at least I'm trying to at this point. We arrive at Chapters 10 and 11. In this episode: Moose changes careers The hiring of Ara Parseghian Lou Holtz makes some massive changes after the 33-16 loss to the Stanford Cardinal We start talking about Colonel Jack Stephens - our very own David Spade character And there's a ton of stuff all throughout the show. I was going to cover 3 chapters, but there was a lot to unpack with these two. Please rate and review! All reviews left on Apple Podcasts will be read on the next OFD Podcast. Go Irish! The OFD Bookcast returns as we get deeper into Notre Dame's Greatest Coaches by Stephen Singular and Moose Krause. In this episode I discuss the next three chapters of the book which include: Frank Leahy becoming the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Frank's coaching style - a bit medieval Changing greatness for MORE greatness Moose's role in the Leahy regime Why Frank is THE MAN My bad attempt at an Irish brogue Fear and respect, and the obsessiveness to winning Straight up brawls The 1992 loss to the Stanford Cardinal and Moose's response And a little bit more weaved in and out. After recording, I really feel like I fell short of explaining the brilliant madness of Frank Leahy - which in the 1940's would have meant that Moose would be allowed to just hit me over and over again for like an hour. So... be sure to read the book. Please take a moment to rate and review. All reviews on Apple Podcasts will be read on the next OFD Podcast. Go Irish! Learn more about your ad choices. To all appearances, Dennis Rader was a model citizen in the small town of Park City, Kansas, where he had lived with his family almost his entire life. He was a town compliance officer, a former Boy Scout leader, the president of his church congregation, and a seemingly ordinary father and husband. But Rader's average life belied the existence of his dark, sadistic other self: he was the BTK serial killer. The self-named BTK (for Bind, Torture, Kill) had terrorized Wichita for thirty-one years, not only with his brutal, sexually motivated crimes, but also through his taunting, elusive communications with the media and law enforcement. In 1974, BTK committed his first murders -- torturing and strangling four members of the Otero family -- and wrote the police an audacious letter declaring his responsibility for the Oteros' deaths and labeling himself, for the first time, BTK. Thus he established a pattern -- stalking and killing a series of ten victims, then bragging and claiming ownership of his crimes -- that ended in 1991 but left law enforcement confounded and the public with deeply troubling memories. Until, that is, he resurfaced in 2004 with another string of letters that would finally lead to his arrest. Drawing from extensive interviews with Rader's pastor, congregation, detectives, and psychologists who worked the case, and from his unnervingly de-tailed thirty-two-hour confession, bestselling author Stephen Singular delves into the disturbing life and crimes of BTK to explore fully -- for the first time -- the most dangerous and complex serial killer of our generation and the man who embodied, at once, astonishing extremes of normality and abnormality. In Unholy Messenger, Singular recounts the year prior to Rader's arrest, in which the BTK killer reemerged, and the aftermath. Woven throughout are the details of his crimes, elaborate schemes, and bids for public attention, and the wrenching impact his deception had on his family, church, and heartland community. Stephen Singular is the author of 25 non-fiction books, many of them about high-profile criminal cases. His first book in 1987 was Talked to Death: The Life & Murder of Alan Berg, which became the basis for the 1989 Oliver Stone film, “Talk Radio", and set the tone for his journalistic career. Since 1991, Denver native Joyce Jacques Singular has partnered with Stephen on eight of the true-crime books. The 1995 study of the O.J. Simpson case, Legacy of Deception, went beneath the media hysteria surrounding these murders and explored the racial underpinnings of the case. In their 1999 book, Presumed Guilty: An Investigation into the JonBenet Ramsey Case, the Media, and the Culture of ography, they conducted a similar probe for the infamous child killing in Boulder, Colorado. In 2015, The Spiral Notebook: The Aurora Theater Shooter and the Epidemic of Mass Violence Committed by American Youth and in 2016 Shadow on the Mountain: Nancy Pfister, Dr. William Styler, and the Murder of Aspen’s Golden Girl. The Singulars have an intense interest in the psychological aspects of murder, which has shaped their work together as forensic journalists. A number of their books have focused on the intersection of religion and violence, including their 2006 book, Unholy Messenger: The Life & Crimes of the BTK Serial Killer; and The Wichita Divide: The Murder of Dr. George Tiller and The Battle over Abortion. Also their books include A Killing in the Family; Sweet Evil and Charmed to Death. Anyone You Want Me to Be, the story of the Internet’s first known serial killer, was co-authored with John Douglas. And in 2006, When Men Become Gods: Mormon Polygamist Warren Jeffs, His Cult Of Fear, And The Women Who Fought Back. Stephen and Joyce are currently working on an anthology about national and international cult leaders to be published in the summer, 2020. STEPHEN AND JOYCE SINGULAR TRUE CRIME RETROSPECTIVE.

On this edition of Parallax Views, while concerns about the global pandemic known as the coronavirus continue to mount in the United States, many folks are being hit by symptoms of another entirely different condition sweeping the nation. Namely, election fever. The surprise comeback of former Vice President Joe Biden in the Democratic Party Primaries proved to be a dark day for progressive activists, specifically supporters of Bernie Sanders.. As we race toward the General Election in November that will pit the Democratic nominee against sitting President Donald Trump, the heat has been turned up a notch on the Democratic Party Primary race. Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Michale Bloomberg, and, now, Elizabeth Warren have dropped out of the running leaving us with a match-up between the centrist moderate Joe Biden and the progressive Bernie Sanders. Joining us later on this edition of the program to discuss the aftermath of Super Tuesday and where progressive movement and the left need to go from here is Eric Draitser of Counterpunch Radio. But first... The 2000 Presidential Election, which pitted Republican George W. Bush against Democrat Al Gore, the latter fresh from a run as Vice President under Bill Clinton, was marred by controversy by the time it ended. For a brief period it appeared to many, including the news media, that Gore would win the election. However, reporting on Al Gore’s victory in Florida, where George W’s brother Jeb Bush was serving as Governor, suddenly proved incorrect at the 11th hour. Controversy arose when it was found that Votomatic machine punch card ballots appeared to have left sizable number of voters unaccounted for. Republicans claimed that this was because said voters were not sophisticated enough to use the Votomatic machien properly. Meanwhile, Democrats demanded recounts. The debacle eventually went all the way to the Supreme Court when it was decided that Bush would be declared the winner of the Presidential race. Nonetheless, public figures ranging from progressive radio host Thom Hartmann to famed attorney Vincent Bugliosi would go on to dissect the controversies and challenge Bush’s victory after the fact. In 2018, noted true crime author and investigative journalist Stephen Singular sought to tell the story of his investigation into the matter by way of his book Stolen Future: The Untold Story of the 2000 Election. Singular was knee-deep in the story as it was happening, but only now. thanks to fellow journalist Russ Baker’s WhoWhatWhy media outlet, has he been able to tell the tale. And I must say its a tale straight out of a crime noir thriller. Regardless your take on the 2000 Presidential Election, Stephen Singular’s Stolen Future raises troubling questions about the state of election integrity in the United States. Whether one believes the result of the 2000 Presidential Election was due to malfeasance or the potential incompetence of the companies behind the Votomatic machines that haunted said election, Singular’s reporting, in my view, should make us all consider the age old question of whether or not money belongs in politics. Should something as important as a Presidential Election be left in the hands of the private interests who create our voting machines? Stephen Singular joins us to recount his personal investigation of the Bush vs. Gore debacle and the issue of "hanging chads" as told in his book, Stolen Future: The Untold Story of the 2000 Election.Then... Eric Draitser of Counterpunch Radio returns to the program to share his commentary on the aftermath of of Super Tuesday, Joe Biden's big comeback, and what it means for not only the Bernie Sanders campaign but the progressive/left movement in America as a whole. The result is a chilling story of a man considered a "spiritual leader" by his pastor and congregation, who turned out to be the devil next door. More than just true crime, Unholy Messenger is a powerful, thoroughly engrossing examination of the intersection between good and evil, and of the psychology and spirituality of a killer in whom faith and bloodshed converged. "This is an important book with new, deep reporting. It is chock-full of information, insights, and analysis that will intrigue both current readers and future historians." —Dan Rather, 24-year anchor of CBS Evening News and former White House correspondentIn Stolen Future, investigative reporter Stephen Singular conducts a breathtaking historical excavation of a still-controversial "cold case": the disputed, nail-biter 2000 election in Florida.Remember the infamous "hanging chads?" The outcome of the election was, amid uproar and rancor, ultimately decided by the Supreme Court. But what really caused those thousands of votes to be invalidated? Determined to find out, Singular dug deep — and uncovered shocking secrets about the extent to which our trusted election mechanisms can be compromised. But his story was never told. Instead, it was suppressed, ignored, and then buried. Until now, that is — just in time to be a part of current heated discussion regarding US election fraud.Time and again over the years we have seen proof that our machinery for choosing leaders is shamefully vulnerable to manipulation and chicanery.Since the 2000 debacle, standards have actually declined, as electoral authorities across the country abandoned not just punch cards but also reliable and re-countable hand-marked paper ballots — in favor of the false promises of technology. They have bet our democracy and our future on totally opaque black-box electronic devices that can be "hacked" by both outsiders and insiders. This is an issue that should keep you up at night. And after reading Stolen Future, a real-life thriller, you will never take the security of your vote for granted again."The attack on democracy described in this fascinating account is entirely plausible. If it happened, it changed the course of history." —Philip B. Stark, professor of statistics at the University of California and advisor to the US Election Assistance Commission"This story raises issues that really matter." —Douglas W. Jones, professor of computer science at the University of Iowa and co-author of Broken Ballots: Will Your Vote Count? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
As a regular reader of WhoWhyWhy, you know that we have focused like a laser on election integrity and uncovered story after story about voter suppression in Georgia, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and elsewhere. But important as all of this is, it's only part of the bigger story. It was Joseph Stalin who said that “it's not the people who vote that count, it's the people who count the votes.” The 2000 presidential election was a fantastic example of why that matters. You all remember chads, hanging chads, punch cards, Votomatic machines, and how 540 votes and five Supreme Court justices changed America. What if those hanging chads had not been an accident? What if it wasn't the fault — as was claimed at the time — of incompetent voters who didn't know how to completely punch out a chad? What if the cards themselves had been engineered to fail? In a never-before-told story that reads like a detective novel, investigative journalist Stephen Singular finds himself on the floor of the factory that made the infamous punch cards, in negotiations with 60 Minutes trying to get their help, and being given hundreds of unused punch cards to test as he tries to unravel the first great electoral mystery of the 21st century. In this week's WhoWhatWhy podcast, Singular talks to Jeff Schechtman about his just-published ebook Stolen Future: The Untold Story of the 2000 Election. Singular takes us inside the machines that manufacture the perforated cards, whose precision, down to 1/5,000th of an inch, shaped the fate of the republic. Imagine that the war in Iraq could have been caused by a dull blade in one high-speed perforating machine in one factory, or maybe engendered by foul play. Singular examines how the failure of punch cards not only impacted the 2000 election, but became the reason for states to place orders for hundreds of millions of dollars in new electronic voting systems — made by the very same private companies responsible for the 2000 mishap. He tells Schechtman about ES&S, an Omaha-based company with close Republican ties and far-right roots, that manufactures most of the systems to which we entrust our vote. Singular takes us inside 60 Minutes and their failure to pursue a story that may have been too hot for them to handle. In the best tradition of investigative journalism, Singular's journey goes from working with an old friend to test an idea, to having door after door slammed in his face. It's a story that should add a sober new dimension to the efforts to preserve our democracy next week.
In The Cards Description:Before the Robert Mueller investigation and before the Russians hacked the 2016 Presidential election, the Americans did it to themselves. What really sent the 2000 election in Florida into chaos and how did that change the course of history, while setting the stage for everything happening today? And why has this story never been told?Until now.A handful of people tried to stop the voter meddling when it started and to warn the nation and the media about what could happen next. That wasn’t in the cards, but something else was… See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On July 20, 2012, twelve people were killed and fifty-eight wounded at a mass shooting in a movie theater in Colorado. In 1999, thirteen kids at Columbine High School were murdered by their peers. In 2012, twenty children and seven adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary. Thirty-two were killed at Virginia Tech. Twelve killed at the Washington Navy Yard. In May 2014, after posting a YouTube video of ‘retribution” and lamenting a life of “loneliness, rejection, and unfulfilled desires,” a lone gunman killed six and wounded seven in Isla Vista. All of these acts of violence were committed by young men between the ages of eighteen and thirty.Mass violence committed by young people is now an epidemic. In the first fourteen school days of 2014, there were seven school shootings, compared to twenty-eight school shootings in all of 2013. New York Times-bestselling author Stephen Singular has often examined violence in America in his critically-acclaimed books. Here he has teamed with his wife Joyce for their most important work yet — one that investigates why America keeps producing twenty-something mass killers. Their reporting has produced the most comprehensive look at the Aurora shooting yet and draws upon the one group left out of the discussion of violence in America: the twenty-somethings themselves. While following the legal proceedings in the Aurora shooting, The Spiral Notebook is full of interviews with Generation Z, a group dogged by big pharma and anti-depressants and ADHD drugs, by a doomsday/apocalyptic mentality present since birth, and by an entertainment industry that has turned violence into parlor games. The 20th anniversary of the death of JonBenet Ramsey is in December 2016. Stephen’s 1999 book about the murder of JonBenet explored the realm of child exploitation and its connection to the crime. In August 2016 Singular released an updated edition of Presumed Guilty: An Investigation of the JonBenet Ramsey case, the Media, and the Culture of ography on Amazon Kindle. It examines why the case still hasn’t been solved and the most important developments over the past seventeen years. Stephen will be interviewed by Sharp Entertainment for a Lifetime documentary on the murder to be aired on Saturday evening, November 5, 2016. This program will immediately follow a Lifetime docudrama on the case. The 1999 examination of the JonBenet Ramsey case was the only book to suggest something other than the two conventional scenarios: one of the Ramseys killed the child or an intruder did it. "Presumed Guilty" broadened the discussion to include the involvement of child ography/child exploitation around the murder.“The case remains a world-class conundrum. The murder of JonBenet is the only example in the annals of American homicide where a body and a ransom note were found in the same location.'In the world of true crime, there is “absolute truth” and there is “effective truth.” Since 1999, enough has happened to give us a much fuller sense of the effective truth of JonBenet’s death and a much clearer idea of why the case hasn’t been solved.' In presenting a scenario of what really happened late one night on Bundy Avenue, Singular proves that no one was truly innocent in this horrible crime. A behind the scenes look at the O.J. Simpson case that explains why the blood evidence fell apart at trial. Veteran true crime writer, Stephen Singular, a two-time New York Times bestselling author, details his involvement with Simpson's defense team and updates his 1996 book about one of America's notorious crimes. Guest: Stephen Singular: Legacy of Deception: An Investigation of Mark Fuhrman and Racism in the LAPD In the early of investigating the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle Goldman, L.A.P.D. In Legacy of Deception, Stephen Singular disassembles the wall of deception constructed by the L.A.P.D. to reveal a scenario far more sinister than anything that emerged in the course of the trial chilling proof that true innocence was rare or nonexistent in this nightmarish case.http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=adbl_dp_by_aut?_encoding=UTF8&field-author=Stephen%20Singular&search-alias=booksThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement
