This week: welcome to Planet Elon. We knew that he would likely be a big part of Donald Trump's second term, so it was unsurprising when this week Elon Musk was named – alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy – as a co-leader of the new US Department of Government Efficiency, which will look at federal government waste. When Musk took over Twitter, he fired swathes of employees whose work was actively harming the company, so he's in a perfect position to turn his sights on the bloated federal government. It is, writes Douglas Murray, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strip a whole layer of rot from the body politic. But can he translate his success in the private sector to the public sector? James Ball, political editor of The New European, and Bridget Phetasy, Spectator World contributing editor, joined the podcast to discuss. (02:17) Then: what's next for the Church of England? The nature of Justin Welby's resignation as Archbishop of Canterbury has no historic precedent in the C of E, writes William Moore, of this parish. One certainty is that the Church leadership will now be under enormous pressure to create a new independent body for safeguarding, but who could be next? The Smyth scandal means that appointing a conservative evangelical would be difficult, but appointing an out-and-out progressive would have its own problems. Whoever eventually succeeds Welby, he or she will inherit a Church more at war with itself than at any time in living memory. Joining the podcast is Rev Julie Conalty, the Bishop of Birkenhead and deputy lead bishop for safeguarding. (20:58) And finally: can you tell your Claret from your Beaujolais? In the magazine this week, drinks writer Henry Jeffreys discusses Beaujolais Day, the festivities started in the famous French appellation d'origine contrôlée that celebrate the first wine of the season. He joined us to discuss everything Beaujolais with Johnny Ray, The Spectator's wine critic. (35:39) Hosted by William Moore and Lara Prendergast. Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

In this new season premiere episode, Hilliard and guest co-host (actor/filmmaker) Shawn Carter Peterson sat down with JOHNNY RAY GILL - a critically acclaimed actor, filmmaker, rapper, poet and activist. He just finished filming seasons one and two of "CROSS" created by Ben Watkins, Amazon Prime's new psychological thriller based on the best-selling book series Alex Cross by James Patterson. Gill stars opposite Aldis Hodge and Ryan Eggold as Bobby Trey, a deadly, cunning ex-DC police officer from Shreveport who's motived by money and the reclaiming of his family's land, stolen by a racist predatory US government. Up next, Johnny Ray will be seen in cat form, in Oscar winner Gore Verbinski's highly anticipated new animated feature "Cattywumpus." It's purrhaps Gill's most hysterical transformation yet. This dynamic, versatile, potent performer might be best known for his soul-stirring performance as Kerwin, opposite Aden Young in the Ray Mckinnon, Mark Johnson, Melissa Bernstein Sundance series "Rectify." A darling amongst critics, exemplified by reviews like The New Yorker “A Quiet Marvel” and Vulture “There May Never Be a Show Like Rectify Again.”Gill's also fondly remembered for warming audience's hearts with his portrayal of Sam, an autistic man trapped in the bowels of slavery, America's greatest sin, on WGN's hit series "Underground" alongside Jurnee Smollett and Aldis Hodge.Another don't miss episode y'all! Our Motto: "We keep it GAME all day!"For information, Merch (T-SHIRTS/HOODIES IN BLACK, GREY & WHITE), and all things Rant Room!Screenwritersrantroom.comhttps://screenwriters-rant-room.printify.me/productsSubscribe, like, follow, share & 5-star review!@Hilliard Guess on all social mediaIG: @ScreenwritersRantRoom@Johnnyraygill@ShawnthemaestroWE ARE NOW OPEN TO SPONSORSHIPS AND BRANDING OPPORTUNITIES :Screenwritersrantroom@gmail.comWe invest countless hours per week to deliver the actionable content that goes into this podcast. Dale Earnhardt Jr. welcomes legendary NASCAR Crew Chief Buddy Parrott to the Dirty Mo Media Studio to learn more about the pivotal role he played in some of NASCAR's greatest moments. Growing up in Gastonia, North Carolina, Buddy participated in competitive diving all through high school before finding his way to a race at Birmingham International Raceway on behalf of Huggins Tire Service. Buddy would take a job with the company working as a tire man for their NASCAR events, mounting tires for the entire Cup field on a regular basis. It was through this service that he met the legendary Harry Hyde, and not long after Buddy would approach him for an opportunity to work on his famed K&K Insurance Dodge team. Buddy explains that his time with Harry was invaluable, and he considered him to be his mentor, teaching him everything he knew about race cars and racing setups.Buddy would make the decision to split from the team when Kentuckian Ferrel Harris came to the shop to purchase a racer and some Raymond Fox prepared engines. While working with Harris, Buddy also spent time teaming up with Robert Gee to help prepare his dirt cars, which were chauffeured by none other than Carolina ace Hayward Plyler and a young Dale Earnhardt. Dale Jr. was surprised to learn that Buddy served as crew chief for his father's 1976 Atlanta 500 attempt in a car owned by Johnny Ray, which was famously destroyed in a crash. Buddy would move on to the DiGard Motorsports outfit to team with Darrell Waltrip and take the NASCAR Cup scene by storm in the late 1970s. Listeners can hear all of this, plus more about Buddy's time working on Harry Ranier's Gray Ghost, helping Richard Petty win his 200th win and the 1990 Daytona 500.21+ and present in North Carolina. When we first saw the talk titled “Space Aliens Are Among Us, Your Product Roadmap is Realistic and Other Lies you Believe,” we knew we had to sit down with Best Egg's Johnny Ray Austin at LeadingEng SF last year.Johnny joined our host Conor Bronsdon to discuss how engineering leaders can navigate unrealistic expectations and pressures, drawing from his experiences and relating product roadmaps to the less-than-tangible UFO disclosure we've seen in recent years. The conversation explores the pressures engineering leaders face, how to align product roadmaps realistically, and how to manage ambiguity within teams.By aligning engineering goals with business objectives and building a transparent, high-performing engineering culture, you can give your teams the context they need to drive focus and concentration toward the right outcomes.Episode Highlights: 1:36 Where Johnny came up with the talk title "Space Aliens Are Among Us" 4:15 Advice for engineering leaders struggling with roadmap realism 6:44 Cutting through the noise to find the metrics that matter 11:41 How do teams know if they're moving fast in the right direction? 14:58 How do you handle teams that are getting the wrong input? 20:32 Lies we tell ourselves that we need to get past 28:32 What it's like to create a new unit inside a company 33:53 Identifying and dealing with ambiguity on your teams 40:45 Johnny's Thoughts on AIShow NotesDownload your complimentary Gartner® Market Guide: Software Engineering Intelligence (SEI) PlatformsJohnny Ray AustinPersonal Loans | Quick & Easy Application | Best EggSupport the show: Subscribe to our Substack Leave us a review Subscribe on YouTube Follow us on Twitter or LinkedIn Offers: Learn about Continuous Merge with gitStream Get your DORA Metrics free forever
Some songs have very deep roots in the Floodisphere. For instance, the late Joe Dobbs loved this song. In fact, we can remember Dave Peyton and Charlie Bowen jamming on this one with Joe and his brother Dennis at their Fret ‘n Fiddle music shop in its original Huntington West 14th Street location in the mid-1970s. (The song might even have been in the set list when the four opened for Little Jimmy Dickens' concert at the old Memorial Field House in 1977.)The tune also was the first song that the great Doug Chaffin played with us when we met up with him at a Nancy McClellan New Year's Eve party a quarter of a century ago. And Sam St. Clair still talks about Chuck Romine loving that melody; oh, how Doctor Jazz could tear it up on his tenor banjo. These days Sam and Charlie have introduced the song to a whole new generation of Floodsters. Just listen to Randy Hamilton and Danny Cox and Jack Nuckols rocking on “Somebody Stole My Gal!”About the Song“Somebody Stole My Gal” already was an old-timer by the time it reached Floodlandia.Written in 1918 by San Francisco songwriter Leo Wood, the song was first recorded by Ted Weems and His Orchestra. In 1924, that group's version sold a million copies and spent a full five weeks at No. 1 on the charts in The Roarin' Twenties.Over the decades, the song also has been recorded by so many of our heroes, folks like Bix Beiderbecke (1928), Cab Calloway (1931), Fats Waller (1935), both Count Basie and Benny Goodman (1940), Johnny Ray (1952) and Jim Kweskin (1965).In the MoviesThe song has even gotten its share of screen time, starting in a cartoon of all things in 1931 from Fleischer Studios, the famed creators of Betty Boop and Koko the Clown. Its best known Big Screen moments, though, were in Peter O'Toole's 1982 comedy My Favorite Year, in the Sissy Spacek-Piper Laurie comedy The Grass Harp in 1995 and in the 2004 epic bio-pic The Aviator about Howard Hughes, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. On a Flood AlbumWhen The Flood went into the studio in November 2002, this was one of the song the guys recorded for the album to be released as The 1937 Flood Plays Up a Storm. Just listen to Joe, Chuck and Doug rocking the introduction. (Oh, and how we love hearing Joe's comment midway through Romine's solo: “Sounds like New Orleans!…)Nowadays you can hear that disc — and all the other Flood albums — for free on the Floodango music streaming service. Click here to give the album a spin.More History? Finally, if you'd like more history on the tunes we play, check out Flood Watch's ever-growing Song Stories section.Click here to start your browsing. Uno de los comediantes más influyentes y que más duro ha dejado su marca en la comedia puertorriqueña, Johnny Ray vino a hablarme de su nuevo espectáculo “Esto si es un Fuck!ng Show”, basado en su popular, querido programa televisivo “Esto no es un Show”. Johnny me habló de su proceso creativo, sus orígenes como artista, y su amor por la comedia, entre mucho más.

He shares reflections on integrating the team within the new company, communicating both within the leadership team and within the overall team, how product launch / development changes throughout the acquisition process, shifts in the org's distribution model & its impact on eng functions, and what it's like relearning your role in the scope of an acquisition. Additionally, Johnny reveals some of his greatest paradigm shifts throughout this period & how the acquisition is better supporting the flexible rent model.ABOUT JOHNNY RAY AUSTINJohnny (@recursivefunk) is an experienced award-winning engineering executive focused on shipping world-class products while building high-performing engineering teams. He is also an international public speaker, speaking on engineering leadership, system design, and the JavaScript programming language. Johnny is the former Chief Technology Officer for Till, a company that built financial products to help renters pay, stay and thrive in their homes. After Best Egg acquired Till in late 2022, he transitioned to Best Egg's Head of Technology for Flexible Rent, where he continues to scale the flexible rent platform to service millions of units."At the time, we were thinking about raising money and also in acquisition and we didn't really know exactly which route we were gonna go down. We shared that with the team. You know, we said, 'Hey, this is path number one. This is path two. Path three is a shutdown.' We were very open in talking about, 'This is a path. It's very unlikely, but this is a thing that could happen.' And so we chose transparency from the very beginning because one, we thought it was the right thing to do. Two, we knew the team could handle it, and three, it was really just one of those things where it was gonna make the process easier."- Johnny Ray Austin Looking for ways to support the show?Send a link to the show to your marketing team! https://sfelc.com/podcastsIf your company is looking to gain exposure to thousands of engineering leaders and key decision-makers, we have sponsorship opportunities available. To explore sponsor opportunities, email us at hello@sfelc.comSHOW NOTES:Johnny's pop culture reflections & tips for protecting your energy (2:42)An inside look at Best Egg's recent acquisition of Till (6:42)What it's been like post-acquisition to integrate the team (10:12)How leadership communicated with their team throughout the acquisition (12:25)Lessons learned about communicating during early exploratory phase (15:54)Strategies for minimizing distractions resulting from uncertainty (18:08)Helpful conversations to host between leadership for effective coordination (19:18)Questions to help gain personal alignment (21:03)How product launch / development changed mid- and post-acquisition (23:11)Introducing a new methodology to the team (26:14)The new distribution model & its impact on eng functions (28:46)Differences between BNPL & Best Egg's rent payment model (31:31)What it's been like for Johnny to relearn his role as part of a broader eng org (34:56)Frameworks for navigating new dependencies (37:05)Johnny's paradigm shift around planning for scale (39:21)Rapid fire questions (41:50)LINKS AND RESOURCESDark Money: The Hidden History Of The Billionaires Behind The Rise Of The Radical Right - Jane Mayer discusses the results of the most recent election and Donald Trump's victory, and how, despite much discussion to the contrary, this was a huge victory for the billionaires who have been pouring money in the American political system.Snowfall - Over the course of five seasons, FX's Snowfall has chronicled how an off-the-books CIA operation contributed to the destruction rock cocaine leveled upon the vibrant community of South Central L.A.This episode wouldn't have been possible without the help of our incredible production team:Patrick Gallagher - Producer & Co-HostJerry Li - Co-HostNoah Olberding - Associate Producer, Audio & Video Editor https://www.linkedin.com/in/noah-olberding/Dan Overheim - Audio Engineer, Dan's also an avid 3D printer - https://www.bnd3d.com/Ellie Coggins Angus - Copywriter, Check out her other work at https://elliecoggins.com/about/

Miller is a concert and theatre producer, actor, and director. He has produced and directed live theatre for more than 25 years, and has presented live concert performances by David Cassidy, Davy Jones and many others. Miller also has experience in the film/TV industry as well, having worked on Desperate Housewives, Rules of Engagement, King of Queens, CSI: New York, E.R., Cold Case, Without a Trace, The O.C. and others. When We're Singin' is Miller's first book. About The Book Before there was music, there was a family. Then the family made music, or seemingly so. Before we heard the music, we met the family. Or was it the other way around? This is where our story begins. When We're Singin' The Story of The Partridge Family and Their Music answers those question and more, in a detailed and revealing biography. This landmark television series launched the careers of David Cassidy, Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce, Brian Forster and Suzanne Crough while capitalizing on the star power of Acadamy Award winning actress Shirley Jones and comedic talent Dave Madden. Wrecking Crew - LA Studio Musicians The music from the TV show (loosely based on The Cowsills) also stood on its own, thanks to the talents of the greatest singers, musicians and musical arrangers that ever walked the streets of Hollywood. John Bahler, Tom Bahler, (formerly The Love Generation), with Jackie Ward and Ron Hicklin were the real background voices.

When a recruiter from Till first reached out to Johnny Ray Austin, he didn't hesitate: “The answer was no. Flat out”. But it turns out Johnny Ray couldn't have been more wrong about the startup, and what he'd interpreted as a potentially exploitative loan scheme is actually a life-changing new platform that helps renters stay in their homes. On this episode of Crafted, Till's Chief Technology Officer, Johnny Ray Austin talks about his initial hesitation and what motivated him to jump on board. You'll also hear how Till iterated on its lending product to give renters confidence that Till would in fact pay their rent for them after offering them a line of credit, as well as where Till is similar to and different from buy-now-pay-later services like Affirm, Klarna, and Afterpay. This is Crafted from Artium: a show about great products, and the people who make them. At Artium, we help startups and enterprises build incredible products, recruit high-performing teams, and achieve the culture of craft they need to build great software long after we're gone. Auspiciado por Vital Full of Life.
