This week, we're delighted to be joined by John J. Ryan from the unstoppable force that is Keep Flying. If you've seen them live, you know exactly why they're one of the most exciting and unique bands in the punk scene right now—blending high-energy punk rock with saxophones, trombones, and an unrelenting stage presence. We first met the band at last year's Four Chord Music Festival and instantly hit it off,so it was a real treat to catch up with John. We chatted just ahead of the release of their powerful new album Time and Tide, which dropped on April 24. John walks us through the band's journey, their DIY ethic, and what the rest of 2025 looks like for Keep Flying. Spoiler: they're not slowing down. Go spin Time and Tide now—available everywhere you get your music. With Nick away for the intro, Chris is joined by our good friends Gary Yay and Ade Holder from UK punk rock favourites Phinius Gage. We dive into some recent releases from The Ataris, Last Night Saved My Life, Orchards, and Propagandhi. We also have an exclusive first play of the new Phinius Gage single “Masquerade,” out May 16. Ade and Gary give us all the details on the song and what's next for the band. Apple Spotify Instagram Twitter Facebook Email

Preston & EZ BlueZ: John Ryan (Keep Flying) by WNHH Community Radio
This week we're joined by John Ryan, saxophonist and vocalist for Keep Flying (one of Sam's absolute favorite bands)! John grew up Catholic on Long Island, and is a longtime music industry insider. Whether he was playing in a band or booking and managing tours for other acts, he's one of those guys that's seen a lot of country and met a lot of people. We had a great time talking to him, and we can't recommend Keep Flying enough! Follow them on Instagram, X, and YouTube (@keepflyingband), and visit their website (www.keepflying.band) for more info!
Last time John Ryan was on the show, we talked about Keep Flying's relentless touring schedule, fan acquisition methods, and targeting the right demographics. A few months ago, Keep Flying went on their first international tour of the UK. John has been to the UK many times as a tour manager and crew member, but only once before for his own music - 15 years ago. Planning an international tour is quite different from a tour of your homeland, involving acquiring visas, renting/borrowing gear, and countless other factors. Listen now to learn about international touring as an independent artist from tour manager extraordinaire, John Ryan of Keep Flying! What you'll learn: Why we love planning toursWho Keep Flying isPlanning and running an international tour as a DIY bandHow a canceled flight turned out to be a good thing for Keep FlyingIt's time: just do the thing! In Hour 4, Willard and Dibs continue to react to a wild take about 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Why are these opinions still out there? Is it a case of media members not wanting to admit a mistake when evaluating Purdy coming out of Iowa State?
Ben, Brian, and Ted share recent adventures. Ben is in an involuntary flying drought, Brian had a great BFR with impossible turns and 360 spirals, and Ted is finally learning to land the Egg. They then talk about Brian's trip to the art mecca of Marfa, Texas and his experience with the impacts of density altitude. A CFI's advice about following indicated airspeed is discussed. The crew then talks about ways to keep flying fun. This includes Angel Flight, Pilots n Paws, doing long cross-countries, practicing maneuvers, and participating in a state aviation passport program. Brian reminds us that we never have to fly- it's okay to not fly or to set it aside. The discussion takes a quick diversion to answer Jeremy's question: how do you stay entertained on long XCs? This varies by person and situation. Finally, Josh McElhattan comes on to introduce the new BAG O' WORDS segment with his "Nobody Cares" radio call to the tower at John Tune airport. It's a good reminder that we all make mistakes, no matter the hours, and somehow controllers are mindreaders. Five guests join me to discuss "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" from The Young and the Hopeless, Good Charlotte's second album (2002). Yes, it's really 4 hours and 47 minutes long. In order of appearance: Gina Catalano of Black Is The New AP Style returns to introduce the song and discuss stats and some movies and TV shows it's been featured in. John Ryan of Keep Flying discusses the song's background and dissects the lyrics (is fame/fortune bad?), pondering where the title may have come from. Steven Klett explores the song's critical reception and how it fits into the religious metanarrative arc of the band's career, as described in his essay, linked below. Candace Nelson dives in to the fan reception upon the song's release. I (Molly Hudelson) dig into the music video as well as some covers that I found. Jeff Todd of I Call Fives rounds out the episode with an analysis of the song's legacy 20+ years later. Merry Christmas Everyone! this week I chatted with John from Keep Flying, a band I'm really into right now. Beware, It's a long one!
Last month, I saw the most energetic live show I've ever seen a band put on in a room that holds fewer than 100 people. That's when I asked John James Ryan of Keep Flying to come on the Bandhive Podcast - not realizing at the time that he's also worked with some of the biggest names in the scene. Listen now to hear all the wisdom nuggets John shares about touring in a post-pandemic world, growing your fanbase, and much, much more! What you'll learn: Why tours have gotten shorter after the pandemicKeeping your bandmates happy by being flexibleSaving money on your tours by sharing gearHow to grow a fanbase in markets that are starved for artHandling criticism from attendeesWhich demographics to targetWhy playing live is the #1 way to grow your fanbaseThe mental health aspects of playing musicWhy waiting is almost always a mistake For full show notes, visit https://bandhive.rocks/156

In March of 2020, Charlotte, NC artist Atticus Lane wrote an EP during the first lockdown after COVID-19. Fast forward almost two years exactly, and veterans from other Carolina Projects Duckbeak, Home for the Day, and No Rope joined Atticus under the name Seneca Burns. They recorded an EP in late 2021 and played for a sold out show at the Milestone Club on February 4th, 2022 as their public debut. A month later, they left home and embarked on a 12 day run with 11 shows up the Northeast. Playing with bands like Win by 2, Patient Basement, and Dead Wait they supported Home for the Day on the Local Scenes and Drama Queens Tour, returning home and headlining the Milestone once again on Monday, March 21st, 2022. After a few more local shows with the likes of Keep Flying, The Second After, and No Scope, including a Sold Out show with Bear with Me at Winston Salem's Monstercade, Seneca are slated to play Sick Tight Festival in Dallas on June 11th, 2022. Chuck Bernard from Keep Flying joins us to chat about their upcoming tours, live record, and EP, the Flyers, shares a wild PHLEX story ++ way more! Power chords and crashing boards. Mikey and Tom talk music, hockey, and anything else that gets in their way. Tom and Mikey are lifelong friends that grew up on Long Island during the glory days of alternative music where our local bands were As Tall As Lions, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Bayside, The Sleeping, Envy on the Coast, you get the point. We spent many nights together at The Downtown, catching any pop-punk, indie, hardcore, or emo band that came through. This was not a phase, Mom! Fast forward 15 years and we are still just as passionate about the scene as we were during our girl jeans and youth XL band tees days. Tom and Mikey are also diehard New York Islanders fans, but as we like to say we are #notanislespodcast. As we got older we realized we can like more than one thing and running beside our love for music has always been our love for hockey. We have realized we are not alone in this thinking, actually there are many of us that love these two things! This podcast explores just how connected they are! NEW EPISODE EVERY TUESDAY! With Draft week approaching, the NBA Rumor Mill certainly wasn't going to take the weekend off. So after Friday brought news of Russell Westbrook and DeMar DeRozan, it's no surprise, then, to see the Lakers connected to two more intriguing names: Sacramento sharpshooter Buddy Hield, and Utah's smooth shooting, savvy Aussie Joe Ingles. Would either be a good fit with the Lakers? Is Hield even the best guy on Sacramento's roster for LA to target?Ingles is an interesting name not just because he's good and would address some (though certainly not all) of the Lakers' shortcomings this season, but because integrating him in to the lineup would be relatively simple. Is Ingles as talented as Westbrook? Absolutely not, though as Team USA is showing, talent should always be a major consideration... but it can't be the only one. Other things matter, too. Would the Lakers benefit more from adding a lesser player than Westbrook who fits better? Where's the sweet spot? Finally, the same two names -- Kyle Kuzma and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope -- have reportedly been included in every trade offer the Lakers are making. Well, there's a decent reason for that, but could it still cause some long term damage? What does it do for their reps around the league.SEGMENT 1: Would Buddy Hield make sense as a trade target for the Lakers?SEGMENT 2: How much should the Lakers prioritize increased talent vs. a smooth transition when it comes to any new faces added?SEGMENT 3: Are Kuz and KCP sick of being included in every rumor involving the Lakers? Probably, but such is life.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
