Over the last few months I've seen posts from ‘Teddy the Perfumer' crop up on my socials and have really enjoyed his videos and his take on the fragrance industry, so I got in touch and he kindly agreed to come on the show. Teddy Haugen is (unsurprisingly!) a perfumer and is the co-founder of the eponymous independent brand based just outside San Francisco. He's unusual in that he's compelling and instinctive on social media - Teddy doesn't just plug his own creations, he lifts the curtain on his creative process, demystifies the industry and is not afraid to be controversial. Clearly a perfume lover and collector, Teddy's social posts are just as likely to be his hot take on other brands - or even style and grooming tips. Basically he's the perfect guest for the podcast! There are currently 3 fragrances in the Teddy the Perfumer line-up, Banane Au Chocolat, Passing Stranger and Summer in Love, with more in development. It was great to talk to Teddy and he was every bit as engaging and open as I'd hoped he would be. https://www.teddytheperfumer.com/Teddy mentioned the following products during our conversation:Dae - Prickly Pear Hair Oilhttps://daehair.com/products/prickly-pear-hair-oil?_pos=2&_sid=2a5cd288b&_ss=rGummy Professional - Wax Extreme https://gummyprofessional.com/collections/hair-styling/products/gummy-styling-wax-150-ml-ultra-hold?variant=39906322251857Phillips - One Bladehttps://www.philips.co.uk/c-m-pe/oneblade-trim-edge-and-shave/oneblade-360-with-connectivityTend Skin https://tendskin.com/It Cosmetics - Bye, Bye Under Eyehttps://www.boots.com/it-cosmetics-bye-bye-under-eye-concealer-10267973Teddy The Perfumer - Banane Au Chocolathttps://www.teddytheperfumer.com/products/banane-au-chocolatYou can find Teddy on IG:https://www.instagram.com/teddy_haugen/On TikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@teddy.haugenOnline at: https://www.teddytheperfumer.com/- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -You can ‘tip' me via the link below. My guest today is Alex Wiltschko. Alex is the founder and CEO of Osmo, a science and technology company giving computers a sense of smell. He set out on a mission to digitize our sense of smell and he describes how Osmo is teaching computers to both read and write scent. Alex was kind enough to walk me through the laboratory which you can watch in the video version of this interview on Youtube and Spotify, where he demonstrates their method to the madness. We discuss their first commercial application, Generation, which is revolutionizing the fragrance industry by dramatically accelerating the typically years-long process of custom scent creation. We discuss all of the potential business implications this technology unlocks, applications ranging from counterfeit detection to health monitoring, and creating a cutting-edge proprietary platform in a historically routine industry.

He explains how he creates fragrances for fabric detergents, cleaning sprays, and dryer sheets; what encapsulating a scent does for its longevity; why Americans like the smell of apple pie; which aromas connote cleanliness around the world; and why people enjoy the “hot metal” scent that gets released during ironing. This podcast has a new intro, and the interview originally aired in 2019. What do the Royal Family, Jude Law, Cindy Crawford, and Machine Gun Kelly all share in common? Their perfumer, Azzi Glasser. Azzi, Founder of The Perfumer's Story, is not just a perfumer to the stars; she also perfumes the characters they play on screen. For Jude Law, she created his vetiver-forward signature scent; for his role as King Henry VIII, she created one that smelled like pus. And blood. And shit. Move over Stanislavski. And entering her exquisite small museum, the Aftel Archive of Curious Scents, tucked into a backyard in Berkeley, is to fall into an ancient, mysterious world. Amid centuries-old books, bottles and curios are natural fragrances that come from the secretions of civets and the bowels of sperm whales, as well as from resins, rare flowers, roots and so much more. We talk to Aftel about her collection, the art of building a fragrance, and her new book, “The Museum of Scent: Exploring the Curious and Wondrous World of Fragrance." Today's episode is a bit of a different one! It's not a tips, how-to's, action steps kind of episode, it's the story. A story of where art meets science and the power of smell to transport us. Today's episode is featuring Helida Dodd, owner of Marbella Perfumes, who loves bringing stories and scents together in a powerful way. We get into how she started, where the path in the road took her on a totally different journey, and some of the things she has to face and overcome as a product-based, artisan business owner. Our conversation covers: How Helida went from engineering to perfume Why smells are so important for connection Parallels between storytelling and scents Advice for for artisans, makers, and product-based businesses to overcome common fears getting in the way of their success And more! We're celebrating Valentine's Day with Master Perfumer Honorine Blanc, a perfumer especially renowned for her sensual and addictive fragrances. In fact, as far as I'm concerned, modern perfumery has two eras: B.H. and A.H. (that is, before Honorine and After), because Honorine quite literally invented a texture in perfume that before her, didn't exist. We discuss what makes a scent a 'date night scent,' how to create sensuality and texture in perfume, what it means to be a Master Perfumer, the most important advice she shares with young perfumers, and what she learned from her greatest mentors, Carlos Benaïm and Sophia Grosjman.
