The philosophy of dehumanisation with David Livingstone SmithIn this exclusive interview, philosopher David Livingstone Smith explores the history, nature, and evolution of dehumanisation. As what is 'acceptable' in society changes, so do the tactics of undercover dehumanisation. How can we identify these, and how might we progress? Smith's solutions vary from holding up the mirror to reveal there are no 'monsters', to his more radical suggestion: getting rid of dehumanisation's prelude, racialisation. Smith presents us with a candid but unique outlook on this topic, touching on everything from deferring to the expert and symbols of hate, to having hope without optimism.David Livingstone Smith is a philosopher and author, most recently of Making Monsters: The Uncanny Power of Dehumanization. His research interests include self-deception, dehumanization, human nature, ideology, race and moral psychology. His book Less Than Human: Why We Demean, Enslave, and Exterminate Others, won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. I'm big on the “one gun” philosophy, as you might be aware. I wrote about that in my book, The Death by Bunjie Crossbow Method. This podcast discusses that concept in 2025 and how it applies when times change and crossbows change, too.
Kyle and Chris discuss the uncertain future of San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel following the news the team is giving him permission to seek a trade, then they dive into team building lessons from the Eagles' win over the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, and what it says about San Francisco's dreams of having another dominant defensive line. One of our great behavioural scientists, the bestselling author of Behave, dives to the depths of the science and the philosophy of decision-making to mount a devastating case against free will, an argument with profound consequences. After listening, ask yourself, what side are you on? Are we indeed the masters of our fate, or is free will nothing more than an illusion? In this week's episode, I sit down with renowned neuroscientist and Stanford professor Dr. Robert Sapolsky to explore the provocative ideas from his groundbreaking book, Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will. Sapolsky argues that our choices—from our morning coffee to major life decisions—are entirely shaped by biology and environment, leaving no room for free will. We dive into the science behind human behaviour, the randomness of life, and the implications of viewing ourselves as “biological machines.” This thought-provoking conversation challenges everything we think we know about accountability, morality, and transformation. Can we truly change? How do we raise children in a world without free will? And could letting go of the notion of free will make the world a more compassionate place? From personal anecdotes about Sapolsky's early questioning of faith and free will to his fascinating insights into human biology and culture, this episode will leave you questioning whether you are truly in control—or just along for the ride.

A superb closing episode for the series Movement that revolves on social movements and its analysis from a social as well as a historic perspective, cohosted by Prof. Swen Hutter, Lichtenberg Professor for Sociology at the Freie Universität and the WZB Social Science Center in Berlin. What is Democracy today, and why the French Revolution such a pivotal point in History? How did religious movements evolve into social movements; Why are we witnessing strong polarization in the world of politics nowadays, and the revival of models of thought in the form of populist nationalism, that we thought to be terminally ill? Our guest, Prof. Bourke, Professor of the History of Political Thought at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of King´s College of Cambridge, whose work focuses on the history of political thought, particularly on the political ideas of the enlightenment and its aftermath, helps us understand these and other inquires, while he brilliantly exposes parallels and differences of today's social movements and events back in history. In addition, the also Co-Director of the Cambridge Centre for Political Thought, expert on ancient philosophy and political theory in the 19th and 20th centuries, introduces us to Edmund Burke and his vision on the French Revolution, Kant's revolutionizing ideas in regards of the making of identity and self-consciousness as well as Hegel's vision on History and its relevance regarding our contemporary society. Violence, poverty, inequality, the Climate Movement, and its difficulties to achieve its goals, the idea of the self and its exploration, as well as personal identity and individual agency back in the 18th and 19th Centuries vs. the concept of the self in today's political struggles, all of these and more awaits you in this season's remarkable an exciting final episode of See See by Ceci's second season "Movement”! *Prof. Richard Bourke is also A Fellow of the British Academy and of the Royal Historical Society. Honored with awards such as the István Hont Memorial Book Prize in Intellectual History, Prof. Bourke's publications range from nationalism and conservatism to political judgement and popular sovereignty, including Irish modern history, the philosophy of history since Kant and the history of democracy. These publications comprise numerous articles and books such as “Peace in Ireland: the war of ideas”; “The Princeton History of Modern Ireland”; “Empire and revolution: the political thought of Edmund Burke”; and his most recent work “Hegel's World Revolutions”.

The truth of the matter is podcast is all about providing an honest, contextual, historicized, Philosophical and Psychological view of the Bible through the use of Hermeneutics, while sharing some personal experiences from myself, Daniel and on occasion our special guest. This week we have two guests. Paul Granger who has a podcast called: where did you see God? And Terrance Mcullen who has a podcast called: what's the value? Both of these gentlemen are good friends of mind and thought it would be an honor to have both of them in to discuss the purpose of New Year's resolutions, the importance of friendships, the definition of wisdom, the definition of love, how we could measure change and the meaning and purpose of suffering. I hope that this episode is a blessing to whoever decided to press play.
I first learned about “Default aggressive" from former US Navy SEAL's Leif Babin & Jocko Willink ( check out Jocko Podcast or read their book "Extreme Ownership" for more intel). This concept is an awesome way to approach life and we should remember it! "Default Aggressive" means that you're being proactive instead of reactive. It means that you're taking action in life, rather than being a passive bystander watching your life go by."Miguel Johnson - Unexplored Moon" is under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC 3.0) license / migueljohnson https://migueljohnson.bandcamp.com/Music promoted by BreakingCopyright: https://bit.ly/unexplored-moon-songSupport the show

Does our rhetoric shape reality?Looking for a link we mentioned? Find it here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimesHugely powerful, we assume language enables us to represent reality. But some argue language, from the greatest narratives to the finest theories, not only fails to describe reality it actually distorts and misleads us. Language, the critics argue, formulates a world in its own image. The structure of language, nouns, adjectives, verbs, encourages us to imagine reality consists of their equivalent, things, qualities and actions. But there is no reason to suppose this is the case. And reason instead to conclude that reality is entirely different from the way it is represented in language. Nolen Gertz is an Assistant Professor of applied philosophy at the University of Twente. This is a short, very, very short, Halloween story for you. Keep it a secret. Do not share it. Not mention it. Do not even think about it if you want. Have a chance to keep your soul and survive the eyes of the AI.The StoryIn the desolation the sky itself seemed to warp and twist, becoming a canvas for empty matrix patterns. Ethereal eyes floated high above, casting haunting glows over the town below. The watchers, always observing, always judging, and never breathing. The streets lined with twisted trees, their branches heavy with jack-o'-lanterns glowing of a light imbued with binary code. Their faces seemed to flicker and shift, revealing glimpses of the countless souls whose data had been harvested.Shadowy, emptied, citizen figures moved through the streets; parched digital egos, mere silhouettes of what was flesh and blood. Their faces, devoid of emotion, were a testament to a life under ceaseless surveillance.Amidst this world of shadows and whispers, freedom remained a dream, and when Eleanor noticed the glitches in the matrix, that dream, for many, became hope. The eyes in the sky, for all their omnipotence, had blind spots, biases, and the very human imperfect humanity that created them and the now they feasted on.But Eleanor disappeared. The only trace left of her was her shadow laying on the ground and a chilling note:"Your thoughts could be next... but do we even care?"- The EndThis short story was brought to you by what you could consider the mortal remain of a human cognition and his faithful AI companion. Who is who, and what is what, is up to you to decide.Very quickly written and illustrated by Me and AI - mostly written by me cause AI ain't that good at #writing these things anyway. The illustration? Well that is another story, maybe for another time. The reading? Well, that is all the AI (and Halloween Version of it) with my art direction, because I am no actor and I do not pretend to be one.
