In this episode, Erika goes back to the 1920’s and shares with us the mysterious death of Thelma Todd also known as “The Ice Cream Blonde”.  Thelma was a beautiful, brilliant, and talented young woman who started her love of the spotlight winning beauty pageants.  She was soon discovered by a talent scout for Paramount Studios and shortly ruled the Silver Screen during the Silent Film Era.  She then went on to become one of the most sought-after actors in the Talkies Film Era. She had a few romantic relationships but was mostly known to have been involved with Roland West.  Thelma would also venture into owning her own restaurant, which she named “Thelma Todd’s Sidewalk Café”.  Thelma was loved and adored by all and was always up to gather with friends and enjoy a good party.  One evening she was invited to a party by Stanley and Ida Lupino, at the party she ends up running into her ex, but still managed to enjoy her night. Early the next morning her driver got her back home safely and the next morning she was found dead in her car.  So, take a listen and decide for yourself if it was an accident or was it murder. One of the great historical Hollywood mysteries, still unsolved, revolves around the death of silver screen comedienne Thelma Todd. She was found dead in her car on December 16th, 1935, killed by carbon monoxide poisoning according to the Los Angeles coroner. But rumors have circulated for decades that she was murdered, with suspects that have included her live-in boyfriend Roland West, ex-husband Pat DiCicco, and even New York mobster Charles "Lucky" Luciano. My guest today is Pat Jenning, who along with co-author Marshall Croddy authored the book, "Testimony of a Death: Thelma Todd: Mystery, Media and Myth in 1935 Los Angeles". He's here to present the facts of the case, and help separate fact from fiction.

Are you ready? We hope so because here it is, another amazing episode from the goofballs of Nerd pop-culture to entertain you once again. This week we bring you some brilliant stories that are sure to educate (we apologise for those not looking to learn, we are Nerds, you have got to expect it). There are some laughs, so grab hold, strap in and let’s get this party started.First up we have Buck with solar powered water filtration systems that are looking pretty darn good. Trust me, when you look at the science behind these you will understand why we got excited, I mean this is fantastic and the possibilities are amazing. While they are only in the early development stages the fact is that this is game changing technology to make life better.Next up DJ has news about the Steven Universe movie, that’s right, not Marvel. Now we know that some of you are going to be fans of this on many levels, I mean who doesn’t like 80’s style dance and music to solving the world’s problems. It worked for the Care Bears and the Smurfs and they are still around, let alone Bob the Builder. Now, we won’t give away the storyline and details, but just remember we can fix it.Next we have the Professor with the story of struggling game developers trying to make it big in a world full of nasty companies. This is a look at the realities of the various platforms available and the costs incurred in bringing games to an over saturated market. Think we are joking consider 40 plus games a day being released, some of which are clones. Now before anyone gets upset, software clones are not aliens who have escaped from Area 51. So, if you want to understand why Geeks and Nerds look stressed and sleep deprived this will explain it to you. Also it is why we review the games we are playing each week to try and help identifying something cool.Next is the regular shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events of interest. We take a moment in this to pay respect to the Swiss that even their train accidents are organised. While serious injuries and fatality is never a laughing matter the Swiss are the people who are so organised they make a German sweat about the details. That is it for another week, remember to take care of yourselves, stay safe, look out for each other and stay hydrated.EPISODE NOTES:Solar powered device - https://www.sciencenews.org/article/solar-powered-device-produces-energy-cleans-waterSteven Universe The Movie – https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/sdcc-2019-steven-universe-the-movieBarely surviving game developer - https://hackernoon.com/barely-surviving-as-a-game-developer-while-steam-gets-its-cut-7028x34z8Games currently playingBuck– Company of Heroes - https://store.steampowered.com/app/228200/Company_of_Heroes/Prof– NetHack - https://www.nethack.org/DJ– Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Game of the Year Edition - https://store.steampowered.com/app/4570/Warhammer_40000_Dawn_of_War__Game_of_the_Year_Edition/Other topics discussedSalt as a form of currency- https://encyclopedia-of-money.blogspot.com/2011/10/salt-currency.htmlThe Bush Tucker Man (Australian Bushman)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_HiddinsThe Bush Tucker Man finding water- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQcYlUUSRVcSteven Universe (2013 TV series)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_UniverseSteven Universe posters- TV series poster - https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNTNjMTM1YWYtZWQ3Yy00OGI1LWEyZjUtYTk3OTk5NGIxMzIyXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMzM4NjcxOTc@._V1_.jpg- Steven Universe the movie poster - https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/steven-universe/images/4/41/SU_Movie_Poster.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/666?cb=20190710090429Steven Universe Music- List of songs - https://steven-universe.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Music- Every song on Steven Universe - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-Irgf54fD8Blockchain (Cryptography terminology)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlockchainShareware (Downloadable software)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SharewareIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984 movie)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Temple_of_DoomPython (programming language)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Python_(programming_language)Infiniminer (2009 game)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zachtronics#InfiniminerHarry Potter in Minecraft- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoIXD0Tz6qEEvent Horizon (1997 Sci-Fi horror movie)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_Horizon_(film)Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine (2011 game)- https://store.steampowered.com/app/55150/Warhammer_40000_Space_Marine/Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution (1984 book by Steven Levy)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackers:_Heroes_of_the_Computer_RevolutionSlaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress or Dwarf Fortress (2006 game)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf_FortressCataclysm: Dark Days Ahead (2013 game)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cataclysm:_Dark_Days_AheadVan Goh painting in Queensland- https://www.couriermail.com.au/questnews/southeast/its-all-van-gogh-at-this-school-thanks-to-former-student/news-story/7910a77db99e679fa0d0936be2b7415cLoving Vincent (2017 movie)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loving_VincentVincent and the Doctor (Dr Who episode)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_and_the_DoctorVincent (Don Mclean song)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_(Don_McLean_song)David Hahn (Radioactive Boy Scout or Nuclear Boy Scout)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Hahn1997 Thredbo Landslide- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_Thredbo_landslideMusicals Taught Me Everything I Know (TNC podcast)- https://thatsnotcanon.com/mtmeikShoutouts29 Jul 2005 – Eris’ discovery was announced by the team of Mike Brown,Chad Trujillo, and David Rabinowitz. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eris_(dwarf_planet)29 Jul 2013 - Two passenger trains were involved in a head-on collision at Granges-près-Marnand, Switzerland, killing one person and injuring 25 others. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granges-pr%C3%A8s-Marnand_train_crash31 Jul 1715 - A hurricane strikes the east coast of Florida, sinking 10 Spanish treasure ships and killing nearly 1,000 people, on this day in 1715. In 1787, he came into contact with Thomas Clarkson and a group of anti-slave-trade activists, including Granville Sharp, Hannah More and Charles Middleton. They persuaded Wilberforce to take on the cause of abolition, and he soon became one of the leading English abolitionists. He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for twenty years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807. Wilberforce was convinced of the importance of religion, morality and education. He championed causes and campaigns such as the Society for the Suppression of Vice, British missionary work in India, the creation of a free colony in Sierra Leone, the foundation of the Church Mission Society, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In later years, Wilberforce supported the campaign for the complete abolition of slavery, and continued his involvement after 1826, when he resigned from Parliament because of his failing health. That campaign led to the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, which abolished slavery in most of the British Empire. He died from illness at the age of 73 in London. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Wilberforce29 Jul 1890 - Vincent van Gogh, Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. His reputation began to grow in the early 20th century as elements of his painting style came to be incorporated by the Fauves and German Expressionists. He attained widespread critical, commercial and popular success over the ensuing decades, and is remembered as an important but tragic painter, whose troubled personality typifies the romantic ideal of the tortured artist. Today, Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold at auction, and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings. Her case became highly publicized due to the graphic nature of the crime. It is commonly held that Short was an aspiring actress, though she had no known acting credits or jobs during her time in Los Angeles. Short's unsolved murder and the details surrounding it have had a lasting cultural intrigue, generating various theories and public speculation. For the Culture: Why Watch That’s Recommendations for Black History Month, Part IITV SHOWSThe Offbeat Humor: AtlantaAtlanta is one of the top cities for young rappers looking to make a name for themselves in the business. Among those up-and-comers is Alfred Miles, a hot new artist who is trying to understand the line between real life and street life. He is managed by his cousin, Earn, who gets caught up in the local rap scene and his cousin's career after returning home to the ATL. Earn does whatever he can to try to get Alfred's career to the next level. Darius, the rapper's right-hand man and visionary, is also in Alfred's entourage. When Earn isn't busy managing his cousin's career, he spends much of his time with best friend Vanessa, who is also the mother of his daughter.Network’’s Finest: Black-ishDre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) has it all - a great job, beautiful wife Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), four kids and a big home in a classy neighbourhood - but as a black man, he begins to question whether all his success has brought too much cultural assimilation for his family. With the help of his father (special guest star Laurence Fishburne), Dre begins to try to create a sense of ethnic identity for the members of his family that will allow them to honour their background while preparing them to embrace the future.Cable’s Finest: InsecureModern-day black women might be described as strong and confident; in other words, just the opposite of Issa and Molly. As the best friends deal with their own real-life flaws, their insecurities come to the fore as together they cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. Created by co-star Issa Rae and writer/comic Larry Wilmore ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart"), the comedy series looks at the friendship of two black women in a unique, authentic way. It features the music of both indie and established artists of color, and touches on a variety of social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.True Detective (S3)Season 3 of "True Detective" plays out in three separate time periods, telling the story of the 1980 disappearance of a young Arkansas boy and his sister, and a mystery that deepens over decades. Oscar winner Mahershala Ali stars as state police detective Wayne Hays, who recalls the days and weeks immediately following the crime, as well as developments in 1990, when he and his former partner, Roland West, were subpoenaed after a major break in the case. What started as a routine investigation becomes a long journey to dissect and make sense of the crime.Gen Z’s Take: Grown-ish The Johnson family's eldest daughter is taking her first steps into the real world as she heads off to college. "Grown-ish" explores the first trappings of adulthood, and Zoey must navigate through the trials and tribulations of these momentous steps. Zoey discovers that once she leaves the nest, things do not always go her way. The series features "that in between place where you're not quite an adult but facing grown world problems for the first time," Kenya Barris, the show's creator and executive producer, said. The True Crime Drama: American Crime Story: The People vs. OJThis dramatization traces the twists and turns of O.J. Simpson's murder trial, examining behind-the-scenes gambits on both sides of the court. The Guilty Pleasure: EmpireHip-hop artist and CEO of Empire Entertainment, Lucious Lyon, has always ruled unchallenged, but a medical diagnosis predicts he will be incapacitated in three years, which prompts the sharks to circle. Without further damaging his family, he must decide which of his three sons will take over. His favorite, young Hakeem, is a gifted musician but values fame over hard work. Middle son, Jamal, is talented and shy but gay -- embarrassing to Lyon. The oldest, Andre, is business-minded but lacks charisma. The reappearance of Cookie, his ex-wife, complicates things; she says he owes her for taking the fall for the drug-running that financed his early career.Scandal"Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes is the creative mind behind this ABC drama. Olivia Pope, a former media consultant to the president, is ready to move on with her life and opens her own crisis-management firm, but she can't seem to shake ties with her past. Olivia's staff includes Quinn Perkins, who has a complicated history, and hacker extraordinaire Huck. As she moves forward it becomes clear that, while her staffers may specialize in cleaning up the lives of other people, they can't seem to do the same for themselves. The Reboot: She’s Gotta Have ItBeautiful Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns) can't decide what kind of man she wants to date, so she decides to date three at the same time. The first is Greer Childs (John Canada Terrell), a rich, handsome narcissist. Then there's Jamie Overstreet (Tommy Redmond Hicks), a stable, overprotective alpha male. Finally, there's Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee), a timid geek with a heart of gold. Unfortunately, while each suitor has his virtues, Darling just can't seem to make up her mind. The Throwback: A Different WorldDenise Huxtable is in "a different world" -- predominantly black Hillman College -- in this popular "Cosby Show" spinoff. A sophomore, Denise shares her quarters with divorced freshman Jaleesa and naive Maggie, one of Hillman's few white students. Other Hillman students include Whitley, a Southern belle full of attitude; Dwayne, a math major, and his best friend, Ron; and Col. Taylor, aka "Dr. War." When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.HereditaryWhen the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry, trying to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited.Annihilation Based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac. Episode 5 shocked "True Detective" fans by taking Season 3 back to the quality and power of Season 1 without stealing too much from the HBO series' origins. We review startling scenes, including The Woodard Altercation, The Press Conference, Julie's Phone Call, and The Porch Talk.  Is Wayne a horrible man who's veneer is beginning to crack? Or should we sympathize with a troubled veteran burdened with the sins and shortcomings of those around him? Maybe both. What happened to officer Harris James? Was he the man Wayne Hays and Roland West alluded to killing? Or was it Tom Purcell?  Big D, King Bee, and Gene Lyons piece it all together. Plus, listeners write in to The Watch with their views on the Hoyt Foods connection, ghosts vs. memories, Roland's sexuality, and more.  Help Support the Podcast Shop Amazon With Our Free Affiliate Link:https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20 Take the Sponsor Survey:https://survey.libsyn.com/shatontv Leave a Voicemail:(914) 719-SHAT – (914) 719-7428 Donate with Paypal:https://shatontv.com/paypal Subscribe to our Feeds & Follow us on Social Media: https://shatontv.com/subscribe-and-follow/ Check out our Movie Podcast:http://shatthemovies.com   Tags: True Detective, True Detective TV Series, True Detective Theories, True Detective Spoilers, True Detective Series, True Detective Review, True Detective Recap, True Detective Questions, True Detective podcast, True Detective 2016, TV Series, TV Podcast, Shat The Movies, Shat On TV, Mystery, HBO True Detective, HBO Series, HBO Podcast, Game of Thrones
