Integral parts, airing on the side of less volume, and wavepool technology. Chad Watchel (Tijuana Panthers) "In one form or another, Tijuana Panthers have existed most of its members' lives. Daniel Michicoff (bass/vocals), Chad Wachtel (guitar/vocals), and Phil Shaheen (drums/vocals) became friends when they were teenagers in Long Beach, California, and started playing music together soon after, eventually becoming one of the shining stars of the twenty-first century garage-rock revival scene—a (relatively) chill surf-rock-inspired complement to the ruckus of acts like Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees. But while many of their initial contemporaries have gone through lineup changes or thrown in the towel, the Panthers are hanging tough—and, in a sense, just hitting their stride." I'm constantly blown away by all the great music (new and old) coming into the show every week.  Enjoy the latest and classics from a wide range of folks this week including The Bacon Brothers, The Ventures, Kincaid & The Memetics, Humanga Danga, The Volcanics, Max Hixon, Tijuana Panthers, 3 of the artists coming to the Hi-Tide Summer Holiday (Los Straitjackets, Southern Culture On The Skids and Messer Chups) and a trio of tunes with "Tube" in the title from The Trashmen, ZZ Top and The Surf Junkies.  Beth Riley has a deep track from The Beach Boys in her Surf's Up: Beth's Beach Boys Break.  And speaking of them, the Wheel Of Fun, Fun, Fun returns with randomly selected covers of The Beach Boys (Jeff Beck & Johnny Depp, Redwood who later become Three Dog Night and Mick Fleetwood's Zoo featuring Billy Burnette on vocals) plus we drop a coin in the Jammin' James Jukebox to hear our selection of the week!

Each time Tijuana Panthers release a new record, they often hear that same familiar statement: “this is your best record yet.” Many bands might hear this and feel as though they have arrived, while others use it as motivation to continue to outperform themselves. But Chad, Phil, and Dan seem unbothered by the phrase, perhaps from hearing it directed toward nearly every release. Now in their forties, the band members have day jobs, families, and/or additional musical projects—all factors that might inhibit growth for some, but that have allowed this band to live on in its purest form, and presumably for many years to come. Aptly named, their latest release, Halfway to Eighty, takes on challenging themes of time and reflection, and although the album's core found its way to the surface inadvertently, such is the nature of Tijuana Panthers: a band that is so established, its creative fire is best sparked without intention. Episode 13 features TJ Maughan, also known as @tj_maughan on Twitter! TJ is a former editor at Arctic Ice Hockey and an avid sports fan, especially of the Washington Capitals and the Cleveland Browns. TJ also grew up on the same street as me and we went to the same high school, so we take a trip down memory lane together (though my memory lane stretches back a little further than TJ's). It was a really fun interview, so check it out! Please take some time to head over to jdrf.org to get information on Type 1 Diabetes, and to make a donation to this great cause. The featured song this week is a track called Crew Cut by Tijuana Panthers from Los Angeles, CA! You can find their music over at https://tijuanpanthers.bandcamp.com/album/max-baker If you have any interest in participating with the show, please reach out to us at beyondthehandle@gmail.com.
