On a sweltering 90-degree summer day, Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer joins James VanOsdol in the car for episode 1128 of Car Con Carne. To beat the heat, they enjoy ice cream from Rainbow Cone while diving into the new Sincere Engineer album, Probable Claws, which arrives on June 26th. Deanna shares behind-the-scenes stories about writing the tracks, and how her songwriting has evolved to focus on a more refined, classic structure for this release. The conversation covers the fascinating details behind the album's tracks, including the opening song "Twist My Tongue" and the standout track (and JVO favorite) "LOL," which features a surprise spoken-word introduction from actor Wil Wheaton. Deanna explains how that internet friendship blossomed, leading to a fun discussion about her own name being inspired by Deanna Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation. She also reveals the hilarious, stealthy process of filming her latest music video inside a Jewel grocery store right before closing time. As Sincere Engineer prepares for a massive summer ahead, Deanna also previews her upcoming performances at major Midwestern festivals, including Summerfest in Milwaukee on June 25th and a return to Chicago for Riot Fest in September. Check out Probable Claws on June 26! ## Exploding House Printing is here for all of your screen printing, embroidery and other merchandising needs. While major summer festival announcements are coming in fast and furious, I dig deep into the Roadcase Vault and dream of warm summer days with four previously unreleased in-person interviews I did at last year's Lollapalooza 2023 featured on this week's episode.First up is Texas rocker and legendary road dog Austin Meade who is now a new Dad, having welcomed his son into the world shortly after I spoke to him, and is just coming off a major North American Fall tour in support of Dirty Honey. His most recent album, Abstract Art of an Unstable Mind, sets a high bar for creative exploration in the rock genre.Next, I had a super fun conversation with Chicago-native Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer. Having begun her journey in pursuit of a career in dentistry, Deanna explains to me how she quickly discovered that the straight route was just not for her. Solo gigs quickly became a full band effort and Deanna talks to me about her personal and quirky lyrical style in full display on Sincere Engineer's latest album, Cheap Grills. In the third slot, I talk to Danny Davis of Husbands who is no stranger to change. Recently, he parted ways with his longtime collaborator and bandmate, Will Norton, quit his job as a software engineer to pursue music full-time, and moved to Costa Rica. Danny talks to me about how happy he is to have managed to create a new life for himself while doing what he loves. Husbands' latest album, Cuatro, is a testament to the power of change and the pitfalls therein.Lastly, I spoke to Axel Ellis, Hunter Olshefke, and Sal Defilippis of Ax and the Hatchetmen. These young Chicago-natives are Lollapalooza rookies and talk to me about what that means having grown up fans of their massive hometown festival. Exciting things are yet to come for this enthusiastic and tight-knit group as they continue to turn on their fans with their infectious energy. For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

The LIFERS Podcast is back on stage! We started 2024 off right/wrong with a special LIVE New Year's hangover party at the Gman Tavern in Chicago (it was Kelly Wey's idea). Was it a success? Well… mostly. After talking about Gabe's horrific performance as Jambi from Pee Wee's Playhouse (and witnessing Gabe's horriFIED performance as Richard Roma from David Mamet's “Glengarry Glen Ross) — we welcomed our first guest of ‘24: Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer! Who then proceeded to win over the audience with her winning combination of heartfelt bashfulness and good humor — that is until she let it slip that she hated dogs(?!?). It got ugly after that. PLUS!!!: Ben's wearing Scrooge's pajamas, Kelly's Bloody Mary program, Colin Smith doesn't want to be here, U2, Silverchair, “One Shot With Scott”, Deanna plays some tunes, Brendan Kelly stops by for a few rounds of “Cards Against Humanity”, and a good time was had by all (except for the dog thing).

On this episode, we're catching up with another album worth discussing in more detail that was released while we were away for a few months. The follow-up to one of our favorite albums of 2021, ‘The Noble Art of Self-Destruction' by Holding Absence. Are the band continuing their upward trajectory with their album quality? Or are they reverting back to the same band that forced Mike to write a letter to the music scene back in 2019?! Listen along on our track-by-track review!
