This week, we're diving toga-first into the life and utter chaos of Caligula—the Roman emperor who ruled for just four years and made every single second a full-blown historical fever dream. From horse palaces and floating orgy boats to stabbing Poseidon and bullying his own guards, Caligula redefined what it meant to rule like a god (or at least think he was one). But was he really mad… or just the ultimate troll in a laurel wreath? This is Roman history at its weirdest—and honestly, its most fun. ⏱️ What You'll Hear 00:02:00 – Who was Caligula really? And why did soldiers call him “Little Boots”? 00:06:00 – Roman power struggles, poisoned dads, and childhood trauma 00:08:00 – The golden-boy emperor everyone loved… until he got sick 00:11:00 – Enter: the villain era. Tormenting senators, gladiator cosplay, and birthday revenge 00:13:00 – Floating bridges, floating orgies, and Mussolini's wild archaeological discovery 00:17:00 – Declaring war on the ocean and forcing soldiers to collect seashells 00:20:00 – The assassination that changed Roman history—and why the public still loved him
Our still recently minted annual tradition of the off-topic commentary is back! After records by Little Boots and GZA in previous years, we're once again wandering away from Our Thing for our final We Have A Commentary of the year. As voted on by our patrons, we're discussing an Iron Maiden record, 1986's Somewhere In Time in particular! From the band's emerging structural experimentation to its classic galloping metal to the increasingly adventurous themes and topics they were taking on, we have a blast discussing one of our mutual favourite metal bands of all time.
In this week's episode, The Cups discuss an infamous Roman emperor, Caligula. The name we know him as actually means "Little Boots." Listen now to learn what we think about and what the lore says about his affiliation with the assassins, templars, and/or the Isu. Now introducing Assassin's Creed Lorecast merch for everyone! On this week's episode of Diving In Deep, Sara is joined by Singer-Songwriter Shane Stevens! This discussion follows Shane's secret love for songwriting while being a hairdresser and how his music journey began. The two also talk about all of the amazing people that helped Shane along the way. Shane and Sara share stories of experiences in the music industry and working together on their own songs. About Shane Stevens: Stevens has written for a variety of country and pop acts, including Sara Evans, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum, Kellie Pickler, Jordin Sparks, Ronnie Milsap, Jo Dee Messina, and Hayden Panettiere. Stevens has had multiple singles released to country radio and scored his first Billboard number 1 country hit, "American Honey," with Lady Antebellum in 2010.The song was co-written with Hillary Lindsey and Cary Barlowe.Stevens signed his first publishing deal with Famous Music in 2001 before signing with Major Bob Music five years later. Stevens co-wrote two songs with Rochelle and country music star Sara Evans for Evans' 2014 album Slow Me Down. He also co-wrote the only original song and title track on Evans' Christmas album, At Christmas, with Toby Lightman. He then contributed 4 songs to the 2014 Jesse McCartney album In Technicolor, including the second single, "Superbad." He moved to Los Angeles in 2014 to pursue a new direction as a writer, vocal producer, and artist developer in the pop and R&B world. That same year, Stevens founded his own publishing and artist development company, Holy Graffiti LLC, administered by Kobalt Music Group. The first act under his development, The Heirs, has been signed to Capitol Records and they released their debut EP, "Ecliptic," on August 28. For 2015, Stevens has contributed songs to several pop artists, such as "Everlasting Love," co-written with Victoria Monet and Tommy Brown, on Fifth Harmony's debut album Reflection; "Paper Doll" for Bea Miller's album Not An Apology; "Paradise" for Little Boots' album Working Girl; and At Sunset's single "Every Little Thing." He's worked on songs for many popular artists, such as the track "Step On Up" from Ariana Grande's album Dangerous Woman. He also worked with Meghan Trainor on the song "Woman Up" from her second album Thank You and Toby Randall's song "Misfits." Two songs off of Martina Stoessel & Jorge Blanco's album Tini, "I Want You" and "Yo Te Amo a Ti," were written by Shane as well. Most recently, Shane worked on what Pop Crush has dubbed the song of the summer "What You Want" by The Heirs. He also co-wrote "Infinite Love" by country star Sara Evans & Chrisley Know's Best star Todd Chrisley, which was featured on the season 4 finale. In 2019, Stevens sold a country music musical to Paramount Pictures, where he co wrote the music with his childhood friend Karyn Rochelle. Stevens signed a worldwide co-publishing deal with Bob Doyle's publishing company Purplebeat in 2021 where Stevens received his first Grammy nomination for the song "Fancy Like" by Walker Hayes. De Australía tenemos a The Presets, combinando New Wave, SynthPop, Disco y Pop. Aquí escuchamos el temazo “This Boys's in Love” publicado en 2008. We asked our Patreons what sort of non-scene related album they'd like us to discuss, and with pop music making a late run from behind to beat out metal and hip-hop, we're talking about the 2009 debut from UK electropop artist Little Boots. Hands was in constant rotation in the Senior Staff's headphones in 2009 (and occasional club sets) as they sought escape from the then-depleted landscape of club industrial releases, and revisiting its blend of electropop and synthpop (as well as more nebulous contemporary tags like nu-rave and bloghouse) was a real treat. We hope you'll enjoy this detour from I Die: You Die's usual beat as we close out the year.
Hello dear listeners and welcome to another special "The Pop Gays Talk To" episode! Three of the Pop Gays have assembled to talk all things pop with one of Wolverhampton's most famous exports! He's written for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Little Boots and Louise. He's collaborated with Kim Wilde and MNEK. He has two bangertastic albums to his name, a remix album and an expanded edition of his second album is on it's way. He sometimes wears clothes. He has the most famous tash in pop right now. It's TOM ASPAUL!!!!
The summer is suddenly fizzling out, and so it's back to school for PICTISH TRAIL and LAURA. There's a run through of PICTISH TRAIL's TOP 5 MOMENTS OF GREEN MAN FESTIVAL, which - surprise surprise - are mostly about his own performances. There's some daft chat about Little Boots, Hot Shots Part Deux, and a very special cameo for the regular PostMap Club spiel. On top of all this, there's a taste of brand new music from MARANTA and ALEXIA AVINA, as well as some gig news and album tracks from SUSAN BEAR and DELIFINGER.Our third series of our artist residency programme, VISITATIONS, continues with a release from London-based electronic maestros, MAKENESS, the project of London-based producer and performer Kyle Molleson and friends. Kyle journeyed up to the Isle of Eigg in February 2022, accompanied by his bandmate Gus Beamish-Cook, where they spent a week in St Franny's Bothan writing and recording brand new material - which PostMap Club members can listen to, exclusively, in full. In this episode of the podcast, we caught up with Kyle and Gus at their local skate park, where they talk us through their life in music, and the experience they had recording on the island, featuring clips of the truly banging tracks they made together. To support Lost Map, and to help us release more music in 2022, join our PostMap Club. The last time I talked to Victoria Hesketh, for she is Little Boots, I was out of my mind, in my east London flat, with late 00's indie rock chaos raging all around. My friend Rob was there. Heavy metal Rob we used to call him. And for some reason he'd decided to pick Victoria out of everyone who was present to have a row with. A row about Tool. Y'know, the proggy metal band Tool, who are so beloved by their fans they have rows with fast rising popstars about Tool's alleged genius at Friday night house parties organized by recently unemployed music journalists. On behalf of Rob, Victoria, and all of heavy metal, allow me to apologise.A lot has happened since then. Victoria has released three more albums of music, follow ups to her excellent 2009 debut Hands. There was Nocturnes in 2013, Working Girl in 2015 and out now – right now! – is the somewhat delayed Tomorrow's Yesterdays, which came out the day after this episode was recorded. That's no critique of her timekeeping. There's been a global pandemic after all, but it is fairly impressive that Victoria has managed to sync up putting an album out, having a baby, moving house – there's a bit of banging and clanging going on her end of the audio in this episode – oh, and have we mentioned that she's now essentially a member of ABBA? We've come a long way from Dalston. If you're a fan of Little Boots, then when you've finished this episode, do go check out her inspiring Patreon community, which we talk about at length in the episode. And obviously when you've done that, go sign up for my Substack, at Spoook.substack.com. And when you've done that, why not drop me a line on twitter at @jamesjammcmahon and tell me who you'd like to hear me talk to on this podcast going forward. I've said before that I'm going to have a little break at Episode 50, which we'll arrive at before you know it. Concentrate on a few more projects and make some adjustments to this podcast so when it returns it can do with more frequency and better quality. But while I'm plotting episodes for the future, I'd really like to know who you'd like to hear me talk to.The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. Spoook is also a record label, a promoter, a shop, a Substack - it's many things. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter. We finally finish a chapter and an apprentice finally gets her warrior name! Amazingly, we make actual progress in this episode. Yet, we still manage to fit in a lot of chaos, don't you worry. SUMMARY:Dan Nigro has already taken 2021 by storm as the co-writer and producer of Olivia Rodrigo’s global smash hit “Drivers License.” He joins us to talk about his development as a writer, his success with Freya Ridings and Conan Gray, and how he’s experiencing this moment as pop music’s new songwriting superstar. PART ONE:Scott and Paul chat about how oddly "adult" pop music was in the '80s.PART TWO:Our in-depth interview with Dan NigroABOUT DAN NIGRO:Songwriter and producer Dan Nigro is having a major moment. Olivia Rodrigo’s debut single “Drivers License,” which he co-wrote and produced, made her the youngest artist in history to debut at the top of the Billboard pop chart. A global sensation, the song not only stayed on top of the US chart for two full months, but reached number one in the UK, Japan, and more than 20 other countries. It set a new streaming record on Spotify with over 15 million plays in a single day. Prior to his years-long overnight success, Dan began his musical life as the leader of indie rock band As Tall as Lions before transitioning to songwriting and producing. His resume includes “Cameo Lover” by Kimbra, “Mercy” by Lewis Capaldi, “Castles” by Freya Ridings, “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” by Caroline Polachek, and “Heather” by Conan Gray. In addition to those songs, which have nearly 300 million combined views on YouTube, Dan has written and/or produced for Sky Ferreira, Kylie Minogue, Billy Idol, Little Boots, Carly Rae Jepsen, Zella Day, Finneas, and many others. His latest single, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Deja Vu,” was released less than two weeks prior to this episode and is already a Top 10 pop hit, indicating that the team of Rodrigo and Nigro is here to stay.
