Roosevelt - "Luna," a 2023 single from Counter Records. Marius Lauber — the German-based producer who records as Roosevelt — shares a funky summertime groove for today's Song of the Day. The track definitely nods to his recent collaborations with artists like Nile Rodgers and Classixx.  “'Luna' started as a jam with a bass line two years ago — it was laying on my hard drive already when doing my last album Polydans and it never really developed into a song," he explains in a press statement. "I've reconnected with some of my old equipment and a stripped down setup in the last months and finally made it work, turning it into a funk driven dance track.”  Roosevelt will be playing Friday, October 6th at the Showbox at the Market. We had the pleasure of interviewing Roosevelt over Zoom audio! After causing a stir in June with “Sign”, his first new studio recording since 2018 which Stereogum called “a thumping house-pop jam with an emotional ballad at its gooey center”, acclaimed artist and producer Marius Lauber AKA Roosevelt recently released the follow-up single “Echoes”. This late summer special showcases a totally different side of Roosevelt – a space disco opus with layers of vocals revealing a wide narrative arc that simultaneously taps into euphoria and nostalgia.“I often see the recording process as an experiment as to how much of a band sound I can create on my own. It still really excites me to produce something that sounds larger than my little recording studio, so even when I could hire musicians to come in and play parts, to me there's something magic about doing it all by myself with my sometimes mediocre skills on some of the instruments I record. 'Echoes' is a good example, as I wanted to create a really rich and lush production, a 'disco orchestra' kind of sound, with lots of layers of sound.Something I did on Echoes, which I haven't done for quite a long time, was to have a musical and lyrical resolution as a second part of the track, that works as a reply to the beginning. While the first half is about being worried about never being able to forget a person that was important to you, the second half is about coming to terms with the fact that you've made these memories, knowing you can always slip into your memory to dive back into those feelings you once had. It builds into a very nostalgic and euphoric moment and turns dealing with the past into something positive and ecstatic.” Marius LauberThe song, which Billboard said “balances '80s-inspired synth, disco, driving beats and cinematic textures into a musical amalgamation that simultaneously manages effervescence and heft,” pays homage to early house and vintage pop and is already streaming in the millions.Roosevelt is and always was a dedicated music lover, with a rich knowledge of several decades of music, from yacht rock to Balearic textures, house euphoria to sub-zero techno, he’s drawn to all forms of dance music. Guided by the emotional and physical connection to music, he uses his outstanding skills in electronics to create music that pushes and pulls between the body and the mind. It’s the warm emotional touch that drives his music and made people fall in love with his tunes since his very early singles, his outstanding debut album ‘Roosevelt’ (2016) and the bold, addictive follow up ‘Young Romance’ (2018). "What does it mean to be a man in today's day and age?" Kris Karuna met Dan almost six years ago at a men's group in New York City. Now he sits down with Dan shortly after the recent Joshua Tree retreat in California and their conversation revolves around the transition theme. The early part of the conversation showcases Kris's early work as a Talent Agent and Business Owner in the music industry for nearly two decades. Kris joined UTA (United Talent Agency) after the successful sale of his talent agency Bond Music Group which grew from 13 to 115 artists and has represented award winning artists like Moby, Classixx, The Crystal Method & Roger Sanchez throughout his career. Later in the episode Kris and Dan discuss Kris's transition into a new chapter of life where he's searching for what to do for the rest of his life. How he can use his gifts to make the biggest impact and look back at his life and be proud of it. Currently Kris is a student of Buddhist dharma, meditation, yoga, Kalari Indian Martial Arts, Shaolin Kung Fu, avid surfer and loves most flow activities. 'Deep house' has become one of those dirty words to me. The stuff masquerading as deep house really isn't all that deep and possibly isn't even that house-y, but it's big on groove, vocals and sounds a bit nu-disco-esque too. On top of that, there's a big sound that's coming out of London and Bristol that's very bass driven that also seems to get classed into this 'deep house' banner, when really it's more influenced by 2 Step, UK Garage, Dubstep and Speed Garage. I didn't like speed garage the first time around in the mid-1990s, but for some reason I love the modern incarnation of it. Digitalism is Jens (the ginger) and Isi (the big guy). The guys met at a record store in Hamburg and became fast friends. Later, the store's owner asked them to DJ a party, and they then began mixing and recording. According to legend, they record their music in a World War II bunker they own in Hamburg. I've been a Digitalism fan since “Pogo” and wasn't afraid to interrupt a dinner in between Digitalism and Classixx, so we could do this interview. The guys were nice to answer some questions before their DJ set and our talk is a nice post-bottle-of-wine mix of broken English and laughter. Cubiq consists of two producers/DJs from Oxfordshire; Carlos Posada and Jamie Jay. They share a passion for house, techno, minimal and other dance genres. They use extensive MIDI controllers live to try and 'bridge the gap' between DJ sets and live sets. They have played many festivals this yearsuch as; Glade, Gottwood, Wakestock, Truck and Underhill on top of a wide range of club nights throughout the UK including 'Annie Mac presents'. Our first podcast of 2010!! Sam Sparro and Jesse "Golden" Rogg are back in effect with "Turn The Radio Off Episode 4" straight from the Modus Vivendi HQ in (rainy) Los Angeles. We just got back from our Australian DJ tour and we're also almost done with our new album which will be coming out on Island UK this summer... we can't wait to share it with y'all!! This one's inspired by the unreleased Marilyn Monroe picture of the same name, as well as the Jack & Diane romcom 'Something's Gotta Give,' although neither Golden nor Diane Keaton (the DJ) have ever seen either. We hope the mix recasts familiar sounds and songs in a context you might not have considered, meanwhile delivering bits and pieces which you might have never heard through a nostalgic filter. We've decided a long time ago that genre-bound mixes might be easy to mix, because of similar instrumentation, tempo, themes, lyrics, etc. but typically feel flat, consistent to a fault, and....easy. We've also come to the conclusion that there's nothing more deflating than reading a track list before you hear a mix, so that's why you don't see one. Will gladly share the tracks with you, though. Thanks to Classixx, who provided an amazing unreleased instrumental [and an excellent birthday party], Love Grenades, Casxio [w/ Golden + Public's soon-to-be-released remix of '17'], all the Modus Vivendi Music family, and, of course, the internet.
