In which The Curmudgeons discuss the awesome power and influence of one of the innovators of the Southern thing, as The Drive-By Truckers refer to it. Lynyrd Skynyrd remains one of the most underrated rock bands of all time, a condition that is partially its own fault, given how it has tied itself in its most recent form to the worst of old Southern stereotypes. But there's no denying that the band's patented three-guitar assault, soulful songwriting and penchant for being the thinking man's rednecks produced a sterling catalog of work during the 1970s. We revisit the five albums of the Ronnie Van Zant era during this episode and place the band in a well-deserved, warm, positive spotlight. Another week, another solo show. Do the presenters even like each other? Will they ever present a show together again? Is the show better when it's only one of them in the studio? So many questions, so many answers we may never find out. This week, Steve was flying solo. So he was playing stuff he liked. As you can guess, there was some OSEES and some Mary Lattimore. In case you haven't realized it yet, we're big fans of the band Osees. So big, in fact, that we're dedicating an entire episode to them in celebration of their new album SORCS 80. Listen in for our analysis of the new album (it doesn't include any guitars or synths), favorrite album/songs, their San Francisco ties, and what to expect at one of their shows.
Send us a Text Message. You know when you're listening to a song and, y'know, there's an unexpected chord or tempo change, or something that throws you a bit off kilter. And then there are LP's that throw up another, perhaps unexpected, direction for the artist – even for an artist known for their eclectism - maybe some influences that you hadn't heard before. Then there are LP's where the LP as a whole is whacko eclectic. And then…. there's Psymon Spine, the band of my guest Brother Michael…....who take it a step further and shift ground mid-song like it's as natural as making a cup of tea – and, of course, why not…break the mould, paddle against the tide and all that.Take their ridiculously good new LP, Head Body Connector and let's take the track AntiMatter Kid whose sounds (and I'm gonna break all my own anti-genre rules here) veer from psychedelic rock, punk rock, indie rock with the most thrilling guitar – it's The Osees on ketamine (not that I would know what that might be like of course) - into an 80's Blame it On The Boogie discofest. And by the way, it's absolutely coincidental and serendipitous that the K reference resurfaces a couple of tracks down when Ketamine Hot Tub appears. Those feelings are what music is all about. In my opinion of course! It feels to me like Psymon Spine has a personality and identity of its own as distinct from the band members. Maybe that's too wacky to contemplate. Maybe it does run its own Instagram page. Imagine what that would look like!https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. We're back after a four month hiatus to bring you our list of the top 100 albums of 2023. Is it, at bare minimum, a month and a half late? Yes. By "we" do we mean "just Brad because Sean wouldn't want any part of this nonsense"? Yes again. But whatever, we're doing it anyway. It has been another great year for music, which at this point should not be shocking. We've got incredible team-ups galore, big names from the past making a mark in the present, new names bursting on to the scene, everything and the kitchen sink albums, spoken word weirdness, hip-hop standard bearers still innovating, gloopy synths, the sounds of a haunted house, and above all else, a lot of very aggressive, noisy music. It was a hell of a year. So... enjoy? (We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming... eventually. Probably soon. We are still reeling from the Detroit Lions losing the NFC Championship game, so it might be a while) Artists Discussed (In Alphabetical Order): 2FAC, Aaron Dilloway, Aho Ssan, Altin Gun, Ana Frango Elétrico, Armand Hammer, Bandler Ching, BBBBBBB, Bill Orcutt, Billy Woods & Kenny Segal, Bounaly, Brass Riot, Bully, Caterina Barbieri, Charif Megarbane, Colin Stetson, Dead Times, Deena Abdelwahed, Disclosure, Divide and Dissolve, DJ Finale, DJ Girl, DJ Smiley Bobby, EABS & Jaubi, El Michels Affair & Black Thought, Ellen Arkbro, Embarker, Emergency Group, Euglossine, Fever Ray, Fire Toolz, Forest Swords, Gazelle Twin, Gezan & Million Wish Collective, Great Falls, Guilty Simpson & Uncommon NASA, Hitech, Hourloupe, Hyphyskazerbox, ICECOLDBISHOP, Jana Winderen, Janelle Monáe, Jlin, JPEGmafia & Danny Brown, Judgitzu, Karen y los Remedios, Katarsi, KEN Mode, Kool Keith & Real Bad Man, Kouns and Weaver, Larry Wish, Lauren Bousfield, Loraine James, Lost Girls, Lunch Money Life, Madlib, Meyhem Lauren, & DJ Muggs, Mallwalker, Marina Herlop, Matmos, MC Yallah, Mendoza Hoff Revels, MIKE, Mike Nigro, Model/Actriz, Mukqs, M-Ziq, Natalia Beylis & Eimear Reidy, Neupink, Novatron, Nuovo Testamento, Oozing Wound, OrangeTone, Organized Cream, Ortopedia Tecnica, Osees, Paavoharju, Physique, PoiL/Ueda, Private Lives, RP Boo, Screaming Females, Shit And Shine, Sightless Pit, Silver Apples & Makoto Kawabata, Sunik Kim, Sweeping Promises, TALSounds, Tee Vee Repairman, Teeth of the Sea, That Mexican OT, The Gate, The HIRS Collective, Tim Hecker, Tinashe, Tzusing, Victoria Monet, Vorsicht Kinder, Wound Man, Zoh Amba/Chris Corsano/Bill Orcutt --- Website: www.queenvenerator.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/queenvenerator/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/queenvenerator.bsky.social

In which the Curmudgeons wake up in the city that never sleeps once more and offer a countdown of what we think is the definitive list of the greatest 40 rock 'n' roll songs about the Big Apple. We touch on the city's love-hate dichotomies and make the argument that these songs paint the city as an experience more than as a residence. Shirts are still for sale (and we want to sell them). Let's talk broken glass- stop wasting glass! You better believe that if we're in Cocoa Beach, we're Jonning with Ron. Michael says the word "calcified." Let us know. The song is really good on this one. It's celebration week, nuptials, recordings, and the hits- all of them. Anxiety? We've got it! Grooves aren't just for Stella, we're finding ours again as well. We both agreed- this one was a lot of fun."Oy vey, oy vey, oy vey"Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/intheminivanFollow us on instagram: @intheminivanpodMax: @maxfine_Michael: @michaelrowlando_oFollow us on twitter: @intheminivanFollow us on TikTok: @intheminivanpodcastWe're on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTxCtwpkBssIljyG6tdJbWQGet in the Discord: https://discord.gg/YWgaD6xFN3Episode Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1wFErvfWgsRx3EPC3CnpNS?si=affc141ad9594224THE MASTER PLAYLIST: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2saxemA3MOXcjIWdwHGwCZ?si=ee3444c085714c46Kenny FunkSupport the show

We're back after a much needed break and what better way to kick off the rest of the second half of season 4 than to have the legend himself, John Dwyer of the OSEES on the show! Dwyer is an underground powerhouse of innovation, creativity and outrageous discipline! The band has seen many evolutions as well as revolutions in it's 20 plus year life span and Dwyer has no intention of lefting off the gas any time soon! It was a blast talking to him about the struggles and impact the pandemic has had on the music culture/industry this past couple of years, modern day psychedelia, a new OSEES album in the works and much more. Enjoy!
It's our yearly tradition here at Queen Venerator as we're counting down our Top 100 Albums of 2022. To say that this was a good year in music would be a massive understatement. This was one of the best years in music in recent memory. A lot of great albums didn't make the cut, which is kind of insane considering there are 100 albums listed here. And what a 100 they are. Dance bangers from across Africa, ambient bedroom projects, a ton of hip-hop, wild free jazz, midi-infused pipe organs, fiery hardcore punk, modular synths for days, ear-shattering electronics, the smoothest desert blues, a guy rummaging around in a box for an hour, and so much more. Episode 113 note: This one had an…odd energy. It's the only way I can describe it. It's the holidays, so I guess we are all in a weird mood. Give it a listen and let me know if it is just me. Also odd because in that we only feature audio from one of the bands we discuss (Specifically “Hide” by Secret Shame). Both the OSEES and Sharon Van Etten are excellent, but neither let themselves to concise audio clipping. For those wondering, my CPAP did not kill me, although it appears to have crossed the rainbow bridge Find us at: www.trashsouthstreet.com trashsouthstreet@gmail.com Facebook.com/TSS Apple Music Amazon
It's time again to set the controls for the heart of the sun and celebrate our co-host: Robert Harrison's birthday! Space out with us as we absorb a collection of songs that evoke the essence and vibes of his favorite band: Pink Floyd. While not obscure at all (they have 2 albums that are diamonds!), we shine on with snippets of similar sounds and themes by somewhat more modern bands from the 90s until today. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is usually forced to test his endurance, but this week is all about songs firmly in his big bang zone. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, even with this collection of great dance songs sounding similar to one of the biggest selling rock acts of all time.Songs this week include:The McBroom Sisters – “What Do You Want From Me”from Black Floyd(2020)Porcupine Tree – “The Jokes On You” from Up The Down Stair (1993) King Buffalo – “Mammoth” from Regenerator (2022)RPWL – “Masters Of War” from The RPWL Experience (2008)Thee Oh Sees – “Carrion Crawler” from Carrion Crawler / The Dream (2011)North Atlantic Oscillation – “Ceiling Poem” from Grappling Hooks (2010)Anathema – “Your Possible Pasts / Goodbye Cruel World” from Alternative 4 (1998)Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
for episode 126, it's time to celebrate my favorite week on the musical calendar as we preview the annual Austin edition of the Levitation Festival. As always, it's an absolute musical embarrassment ….OF RICHES, my friends. Why are there only 4 appearances by the Osees? Why not 40? Are 2 nights really enough for King Gizzard Lizard Wizard Dairy Queen Blizzard? Can a room the size of the former Beerland possibly contain the charisma of Christian “Truth In Advertising” Bland? I THINK NOT. Tune in this week and I'll help you make your Levitation Fest schedule and I'll even be giving away a pair of tickets to see Acid Dad (second prize is 4 tickets to see Acid Dad).
Dev Ray, Dylan Shearer and Ali Baker (with Summer Schief) make an appearance at the final Sherler Sundays concert of 2022. Ali and Summer reveal their new band name, discuss singing harmony with the Mona Reels, and share about their recent opportunity to share the stage with hip-hop royalty. Dylan performs in Olympia for the first time in 20 years and talks about his formative years in the Mojave desert, and the chapter of his life in the Bay Area leading to working with members of the Osees and Comets on Fire. Dev visits Olympia for the first time ever, sharing songs from his upcoming record and talking about previous projects. I've also collaborated musically with each of these friends of mine, so we're talking about those experiences as well. This concludes the series of live highlights from Scherler Sundays, and Low Profile will be back soon with a brand new season that's over a year in the making, starting with The Mona Reels. You can find all of today's featured artists on Bandcamp:Dev Rayhttps://devraymusic.bandcamp.comDylan Shearerhttps://dylanshearer.bandcamp.com/Ali Bakerhttps://alibakermusic.bandcamp.com/Scherler Sundays is a collaboration of Low Profile and Three Magnets Brewing Company.https://www.3magbrewing.comAnd of course, this show is supported by you at https://patreon.com/LowProfile !You can find all previous episodes of Low Profile with Markly Morrison at https://www.lowprofilepodcast.com

Instead of participating in Record Store Day this year, Steve bought a couple records that he wanted even more--and he didn't have to wait in line. Meanwhile, Keith crossed his lines on the timing of an Osees concert. As usual, hilarity ensues. But what were those records Steve bought, you ask. Why, none other than the timeless purveyors of low rock, Morphine. Morphine's story is a tragic one. Vocalist, bassist and all-around bandleader Mark Sandman died onstage in Italy before he could make it to 9-9-99 and sit on his back porch to drink red wine and French fries with pepper. One album that was mostly complete at the time of Sandman's death was released posthumously and an ill-fated Orchestra Morphine tour ensued. Now, twenty-some-odd years later, instead of universal adulation and acclaim, Morphine is in danger of slipping away like wisps of smoke.Along the way they touch on the City of Devils, Tom Waits, and the Butchered Rodents, and revisit the saxophone-centric film classics, The Lost Boys and Lost Highway. Somehow PJ Harvey and Les Claypool fit into this as well.Episode artwork by Mike Joyce. Background music by Motorholmes.Support the show

Once again, the wealth of new material being released each and every month “forces” me to expand my new release episode into a two part series. Tonight’s episode focuses primarily on “friends” of the show. Bands that have so nicely regularly sent their new projects to The Ledge. Great labels such as Rum Bar Records, Dirtnap Records, and Stardumb Records. Fabulous Minneapolis artists such as The Right Here, Night Jobs, and UltraBomb. The latest covers project by Geoff Palmer. Plus some of the other great new tunes by longtime faves Ty Segall, Osees, and The Sadies, mixed with some new band discoveries (Gentleman Rogues, The Sparklers). One note, however. At the very end of the show I introduce a track by Dust Star. Unfortunately, my broadcast machine decided to air The Rubs. Still, a quality selection but I’ll have to save Dust Star for next week. I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records […]

As broadcast July 28, 2022 with plenty of extra sauce to slather on. Well, it's late July so we're having a barbecue to start the show tonight with some newer and older funky favorites, but maybe not the most familiar tracks if you're American. Lots of African, UK, and French influences going on here with some Ethiopians, Russians, and Danes thrown into the jam for flavor. Automatic - "Skyscraper" from the 2022 album Excess on Stones Throw. Los Angeles trio Automatic tap into consumerism on their latest single, “Skyscraper,” channeling a materialistic yuppie type, obsessed with consumer culture. “It's about spending your life making money and then spending it to fill the void created by said job,” explained bassist/vocalist Halle Saxon, with bandmate Lola Dompé cheekily adding, "Kind of like going to LA to live your dreams." The track will be released on their forthcoming full-length Excess, out June 24th. Automatic plays Seattle on September 10th and 11th, opening for Osees at Neumos. Brandishing perhaps the greatest handle in photography history, Dylan sits down with Tomoko Inoue, perhaps better known by her moniker, The Tinfoil Biter, to delve into her history as a concert photographer. A chance opportunity to photograph Down while in Japan opened the gate and her dynamic shots have highlighted the already heavy presence of such artists as Crowbar, High on Fire, Child Bite, Weedeater, and Osees. We go through some select sets of her photos while also touching on the highs and lows of living in Michigan in the 90s, how drawing lead her to photography, the dreaded purple light, knowing when to put the camera down, and randomly becoming acquainted with Henry Wilson from Floor*. You can check out more of Tomoko's photography over at her website. *NOTE: There was a slip of the tongue and we meant to say Henry WILSON of Floor. Mr. Vasquez is correctly from Saint Vitus, not Floor. Our bad!

John Dwyer, best known for his work in the band Osees, fka Thee Oh Sees, fka O.C.S., speaks at length with guest host Matt Murillo (drops 12/8/2021) about his extended musical universe, including projects Krang, Pink and Brown, Coachwhips, Damaged Bug, the Trawggs, and Yikes. Dwyer also talks about his record label Castle Face, aging out of rock and roll lifestyle tropes, and his admiration of artists like Bob Log III and The Mummies. The Osees (sp?) are certainly one of my favorite current rock and roll bands. I love this band, I love these stories, and so will you. I was literally dancing round the room when John Dwyer agreed to be on the show. John is a tireless, persistently forward-thinking warrior whose influence is impossible to quantify. The band that he founded and leads - Osees (Thee Oh Sees) - is one whose influence is equally impossible to quantify. He defines experimentation....Hurtling, bruising, brooding, hypnotic, phalanx of double drummers, muscular, veins of gold through granite, shifting ground, heavy, lush, stately, groovy, roar, whisper, fuzz fried... And my favourite….... Cauldron of chaosThese are John and Matt's notes of the Osees' albums Orc and Mutilator….pretty accurate huh?Thank you John, this was a blast!I Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is a music podcast that does music interviews differently. I'm Giles Sibbald and I'm talking to extraordinary musicians, DJ's and producers about how they use an experimental mindset in their lives to amplify their own creativity, pursue new challenges, overcome fears and bounce back from mistakes.- brought to you by Hey Sunday, the mothership of the experimental mindset™.Podcast logo and art by Tide Adesanya, Coppie and Paste

Anno nuovo, nuovi Episodi.
Despite being a child of the 80s and hip to the freaky stylings of such pranksters as Ween, Primus and Extreme Elvis, Keith still doesn't quite understand the Butthole Surfers. Fear not, Steve can take him gently off the rails into the annals of this acid-soaked punk miasma. This one is not for the faint of heart. I just heard a new band called the Osees. No, not Thee Oh Sees, or Oh Sees, or OCS, Osees. For the past 20-plus years, John Dwyer has been a musical chameleon appearing in several bands, half of which have a very similar sounding name. He's the musician Keith has seen live most often and no matter the venue or the band around him, he puts on a stellar show. We tell you all about it here. Alas, during these chaotic and troubling times, there are no concerts and a livestream is all we have to look forward to. Until then, please enjoy the various guises which has been worn by our man of the (not quite half) hour.New album rehearsal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u73AGFGipA8Pink & Brown live in Brooklyn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aqwzweFqjcZeigenbock Kopf https://vimeo.com/7974470Extreme Elvis https://vimeo.com/7974466Sex with a Man - zeigenbock kopf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6ooQdr-98IBlack Pearl - Pink & Brown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0caFIIAqiETunnel - Pink & Brown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvX98wEQiYYSupport the show (https://teespring.com/stores/the-new-dad-rock)
