Although many, including myself, will engage in the fun celebrations, parades, cookouts, fireworks, and more this 4th of July - a lot of people take for granted and forget the sacrifice that Freedom requires. However, thankfully today we have a true American Hero joining us to remind us of his very own words, “America is worth living for, worth fighting for and if need be, worth dying for.” On March 8th, 1971 while serving in the United States Marine Corps in South Vietnam, Tim Lee gave both of his legs to America. However, instead of quitting or becoming bitter God used this major event in Tim's life to propel him into a ministry that no one could have imagined at that time. Now having served 50 years in full-time ministry, where he has ministered in all 50 states and numerous countries addressing thousands of local churches, Christian schools, civic organizations, colleges and universities, hundreds of special patriotic events, as well as thousands of Marines and Marine Recruits every year, God continues to use Tim's heart of passion and patriotism to share and spread the good news of the gospel. Today our prayer is that in and throughout this episode you would be open and receptive to what God has for you. Through the power of Tim's testimony as well as the good news of the gospel which is presented, we pray that your life would be forever impacted and changed because of the sacrifice God gave for you. Additionally, even in the challenging and chaotic times we may find ourselves in as a country, our hope is that you would be reminded of just how blessed we are to live in the Land of The Free because it's the Home of The Brave. The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of primarily black military pilots (fighter and bomber) and airmen who fought in WW2. Men who fought for a country that, sadly, didn't know much about them at the time, and had to fight for recognition at every turn because of racism. I've spent all day thinking about Skip, remembering conversations and moments in time, laughs and a vicious wit that endeared him to everyone (ok, not EVERYONE, some are humorless assholes) He was bigger than life, the rogue warrior, definitely had a healthy dose of pirate in his heart..I suspect he was the man we want to be, fearless and a true leader, with a clear disdain for authority and unwavering loyalty for his team and country. Richard was an elite warrior among the elite warriors, He was kind, humble, fierce, genuine and thoughtful. Skip was always available to give you a “no shitter” should you need his special kind of guidance. I valued his friendship more than I can put into words, he tolerated my never ending questions with a warm smile and a long suffering patience, I'll miss you Skip.. you are one of the finest men I've ever known and I'm proud to have called you my friend." Senator Max Cleland was a true American hero. One of the finest, most selfless leaders of our time. He was a titan. And his tremendous impact was second only to his huge heart. Even in these last few difficult months before he died, he was a fighter—and a happy warrior. And Max's passing comes the week of Veterans Day. Max defined what it means to be an American veteran. And what it means for veterans to continue to serve after they take off the uniform. And after tragedy. He's the godfather of modern veterans affairs and advocacy--and he's forever stronger at the broken places.  In this Veterans Day special episode, our host and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff reflects on the life and legacy of his friend, mentor and personal hero, Max Cleland. And in order to even begin to properly tell Max's story, we hear from a man who knew him better than almost anyone else. Another hero, another mentor, another Vietnam veteran, another son of the south, another true American hero: Shad Meshad. Shad has known Max for over 45 years. And in this time of mourning, and reflection, and especially this Veterans Day, he is the person we most need to hear from.  They call him the Mad Man. For more than five decades, National Veterans Foundation Founder and President Shad Meshad has been one of the most important veterans advocates in the world. He is a therapist for Veterans and an advocate for Veterans' rights. After getting his master's degree in psychiatric social work from Florida State University, he enlisted in the army in 1970 and served as a counselor for U.S. soldiers in Vietnam. That was years before we knew this was really a thing. He'll tell you more about that, the Max Cleland most people never knew, and all the lessons we can all learn from Max's amazing life. This wonderful story is an amazing life-saving 100% true story which was broadcasted on one of the main Cincinnati, Ohio live television stations. It is presented here as our way of saying that the world has not gone to hell in a handbasket just yet. Despite what some may think, good people still exist, and here is one of them. He does not consider himself, and refuses to even admit, that he is even a hero at all. Imagine, if you even can, that someone you truly love and care about is, as Bob Dylan once sang, "Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door" and suddenly goes down for the count. Enter our protagonist, Carl, who was also assisted by a totally unknown female, as our story starts to unfold. What actually happened? You can listen here and take comfort and solace in the fact that the victim's family now have their relative back solely due to the rapid fire teamwork of all parties involved. Do you believe in angels? It makes no difference if you do or do not because you are, after hearing this fine gentleman's tale, going to be forced to admit that something was present on that highly memorable day which defied the laws of normalcy. Listen to the story which is being told from the heart about someone who was granted the finest gift anyone could ever receive on that very special day--the gift of life. Saying "Thank-you" in a situation like this is simply not enough. That is why we are asking those of you who are touched by the man's kindness and compassion to send him a letter of gratitude written in your own words. He belongs being morally supported by good people all over the world who are not afraid to express their true feelings. The address is above and let's all unite and make sure this man knows the world is a better place with him in it. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rick-flynn/support

Supporting our vets isn’t just about a handshake and a pat on the back. While it's always a good thing to recognize their contribution and sacrifice by shaking their hand when you see them in daily life, there's so much more we all can and should do. Fortunately, Gregory Scott, President and CEO of New Directions for Veterans, does. In fact, his organization serves 1000+ vets and their families every year by providing affordable housing in Los Angeles. He is responsible for taking vets off the street, which is excellent since there are thousands of homeless vets who could use the assistance. His organization, NDvets.org, also helps with addiction recovery and mental health issues. The group has a clinical staff to provide services even after vets are placed in permanent housing. Gregory's organization rehabbed two old hospitals to create 147 studio apartments, which means that many more homeless vets can leave the streets and be treated with the respect they deserve. The group is also working to create units with more bedrooms for families, and everything they do is rehabbed to meet strict Disability Standards. Listen to this important podcast through your Independence Day weekend to learn some alarming statistics and how you can help. What a great way to celebrate all those brave men and women who put their lives on the line to keep our soil safe. Learn about Gregory's involvement in the upcoming Walk for Warriors, too.

In a matter of seconds, under a broiling Iraqi noon sun on Aug. 17, 2004, Major Ed Pulido of Edmond, Okla., saw his life take a 180-degree turn. He was thrust into first battling for his own survival and then dealing with how to rebuild himself. Having completed three separate tours of duty in Iraq, Pulido was serving a one-year stint with the U.S. Army Reserve's 75th Division to train new members of the Iraqi army. As he was driving an SUV through what is known as IED Alley, traveling at 50-60 miles per hour. After making it through the crowded streets of Baghdad, the SUV hit an IED (improvised explosive device), that exploded under him.
