“You are who Google says you are” is a quote from Timbo Reid, the host of the “Small Business Big Marketing” podcast which I follow.  His point is people check us out before they meet us, using search engines like Google.  In sales, buyers will also peruse our company website, search us out on Google and probably look us up on YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  What are they going to find there?  Are we in photos on Facebook, doing something stupid or embarassing, fully fueled by copious amounts of alcohol?  Are we conscious enough of how our personal brand is being perceived?  Have we got business enemies who are posting damming claims about how we didn't pay them or how we ripped them off.  Our lives in sales today are open books.  We can't miss the point that we need to control what gets written in the pages of that book.  If you have Facebook posts that are not consistent with the professional image you want to portray, then delete them all.  If it is really bad, delete the whole thing and start again.  When we look at the photos of you in your profile page, is it you with a straw hat and a cocktail in hand, in some sand and surf setting, rather than you in a suit?  Is your LinkedIn profile some pathetic, indulgent job resume?  Are you raging against the other political party on Twitter, upsetting the other fifty percent of the population, including half of your buyers? Personal branding in sales is gold.  Before we even get to have the meeting with the client, we want to create an image in their mind of someone who is serious, trustworthy, reliable, expert, credible, friendly and easy to work with.  Unfortunately, today, this can create itself and morph into something we don't want to project to clients, unless we step in and take control of our public image.  The rule in sales is to avoid divisive subjects like politics and religion.  This is obvious, but we may have firm views on these things and our public record is there for our clients to see.  We may be losing business opportunities because of our very personally held, but widely and very publicly broadcast ideas on these subjects. Have you done an audit on yourself lately?  Do a search on your own name, using a number of popular search engines and see what it throws up.  Take a good look at your Facebook and LinkedIn pages and see what you are projecting to the world about you, as a potential business partner for buyers.  It shouldn't just be from a defensive posture.  What can you do to project expert authority to buyers, by what you present on social media etc.  Post blogs about your area of expertise, offering good insight and advice to buyers of your product or service.  It doesn't have to be hundreds of blogs, but it should also not be a barren wasteland of nothing.  Extended blogs can become articles which may be suitable for publication in magazines.  These can get picked up in your Google search and they add to your personal brand as an authority in this area.  You can push the articles out through your weekly newsletter to clients or through your social media.  If you produce enough blogs, these may become an eBook or a hard copy book.  Again your expert authority is being highlighted and you are going to be seen as an expert in your field.  You may not like to write or maybe you are not very good at it.  You can always record what you want to say, get a transcript of it and work on editing that.  If you need to, there are plenty of editors and ghost writers available to help you polish it up.  I remember seeing an article written by a fellow I know and it was very good. I was surprised because he never seemed that articulate.  I found out later I knew the guy who had ghost written it for him. Today, ChatGPT may help you with the article or book plan. It doesn't matter. People don't care that much, they take what they see in front of them and it is either good or it isn't.  You are still making your key points and it all supports your personal branding. You can also use audio for podcasting.  This is not for the faint hearted because once you start, you have to be committed to keep going.  You also have to release episodes with reliable regularity.  You can't tell the client on one hand that you are a reliable supplier and then have show episodes released at crazy intervals, that show zero ability to be consistent. Not good.  You may prefer video and that is cheap and easy today, compared to years ago, when you needed lots of equipment, a camera crew, a sound crew, video editors etc.  Today you can broadcast using various live streaming platforms and have no crew and no editing.  Simply buy a device holder that screws into a tripod, buy an external microphone and set you phone or iPad and just hit record.  You may not even bother to edit out the bits of you pushing the start and stop button or get someone else to push them for you. Video is good because it shows you in action and attracts more trust.  We can see your eyes and read your body language, to gauge if we can trust you or not, before we bother to meet you.  It allows us to demonstrate our expertise on a given subject and add value to others in the same industry.  If you know a bit about editing or have access to editing help, you can add an intro and an outro to brand yourself even better.  You can also inject slides into the video to show graphs or text to support what you are saying.  If you are really crazy, you can be like me and start your own TV show as an expert on a topic on YouTube and produce episodes every week for years. We are seizing control of our public image and we are stuffing it full of expert authority.  We know we are going to be found anyway, but we are proactively deciding just what will be found.  We are assembling content in various forms that appeal to buyers.  Some like to read text, others like to listen to audio and others want to see us on video.  We marshal all of the social media available, our email list and enlist the cooperation of others who will share our content to get the greatest bang for the buck.  A little bit of planning goes a long way to setting up the sales meeting and selling the client before we even meet.

Ant Morell knows how to create an amazing business culture. He is the founder of Bounce - an indoor trampolining playground for people of all ages, that's experienced some extraordinary growth in its first four years; and a big reason for this is due to the amazing culture Ant and his team have created. To fully understand how they've done this, you'll need a basic understanding of a Melbourne-based charity called Reach; because that's where I met Ant for the first time about 10 years ago. Reach had a huge impact on my life, and on Ant as he's utilised a lot of what he learnt at Reach to build the Bounce brand philosophy. So Reach is a wonderful NFP that's focussed on helping young people at risk find their passion in life. 8 years ago, Lizzy Abegg had an epiphany that she needed to move to Byron Bay to help her little sister grow a struggling jewelry business. Well, that business is now called Spell & the Gypsy Collective ...  and it's a multi-million dollar fashion empire. “Spell and the what?!” I hear you say. Spell & the Gypsy Collective is a Byron Bay fashion label with a cult-like following. The label began when Lizzy's little sister Isabella (whose childhood nickname was Spell) started selling her handmade jewellery at Byron Bay's local markets. Before too long Lizzy had an epiphany that she needed to be in Byron Bay with her sister, so left her Bondi Beach home and career as a film editor to become Spell's business partner. From there the label has expanded into fashion, accessories and homewares … and they recently won the overall national Telstra Business Award (against some pretty bloody tough competition). Spell is now consistently doing over a million dollars a month, has 660,000 Instagram followers, and a flagship store frequented by celebs from around the world. It's also a shining example of entrepreneurship and business passion in the notoriously tough and highly competitive fashion industry. Go back and have a listen (in particular to Nic) who is pro at reeling off the key messages he wants to get across about Orange Sky. And I've noticed he responds with exactly the same answer in every interview he does. So I encourage you to have 3-5 key messages that you share whenever you get the chance. This episode was recorded on the second Small Business Big Marketing Outsourcing Tour to the Philippines. Now before we get started I know that outsourcing means different things to different people and I've covered my thoughts on Australian businesses outsourcing to the Philippines on the blog. This episode is all about looking at the glass half full. I share my thoughts as I taxi down the runway in Manilla, ready to take off back to Melbourne and I also captured some of my guests thoughts, opinions and 'aha' moments in the minibus after the tour as well. Here are some of those insights. 1. Adam Longhurst from Leather Italia Why did you join the tour? Adam has felt the full force and effect of fluctuations in the Aussie dollar. He attended the tour with his eyes wide open to see what opportunities there were for outsourcing any of the labour components of his business. Aha Moment? Outsourcing bookkeeping and accounting. When Adam sat back and really thought about it, he realised he was spending a disproportionate amount of time on the books. Now it's certainly important to be across the numbers but is that really what he went into business to do? Outcome? Adam loves his accountant, he's highly skilled and one of his trusted advisors BUT he's constantly on his back about bookkeeping. Tony doesn't want to do the books, he doesn't like doing the books, however another full time employee in Australia is cost prohibitive. Some people buy components offshore, we're trying to buy some labour offshore. If we grow, then more money and jobs will come off the back of that directly into the Australian economy too. 2. Russ Porteous of Firewize Why did you join the tour? I wanted to see, in person how business is done in the new economy. Aha Moment? We went to a BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) that was as professional an outfit as ever I've seen anywhere. Outcome? This tour is on the back of 15 years of research, I've come to crystallise in my mind how we can move from an adhoc outsourcing basis to a more streamlined, wholistic and professional strategy. 3. Marcus Nicholls & Ariel Endean of Akuna Pet Resorts Why did you join the tour? We had been considering outsourcing for 2 years. We were already outsourcing some small tasks but we were afraid of going further. Aha Moment? I wasn't expecting to see just how dynamic the team here in the Philippines are. They truly look and function with the same intelligence, creativity and drive as a crack team in Australia. Outcome? Just start. You're going to in the next 5-10 years anyway as this is the direction the world is going. 4. Will Porteous (Russ's son) Will is the son of Russ and work's for Firewize and is also studying engineering at uni. Will's take away was that it was a real 'eye opener'. He said that 'when you think about outsourcing you automatically think ‘sweatshop' but it absolutely was not. It's just like Australia, so professional and well organised.' I asked Will what he was going to say to his mates about the tour. He said: "I'd say to my mates that are in uni that they need to be way ahead of the curve. Just pumping work out is not going to get you a job." 5. Amanda Stevens & Brendan Buchanan  Past guest of the show happened to be in the Philippines at Cornerstone Business Solutions inducting a new team member. here are a few quotes from the show: "We came here with pretty high expectations""The output is just extraordinary. We're talking world class output." Aha Moment The other surprise has been their ability to follow a process but also demonstrate incredible initiative around it. People underestimate how well they will understand the rationale behind a project. So how about that? I'd love to know your thoughts on the show and about outsourcing in general. Success stories? War stories? As you can probably tell I'm pretty keen on outsourcing as not only a marketing strategy but a business strategy. It's time to start taking positive steps to a more productive and enjoyable business life.  *** As an aside, it may be interesting to some listeners to understand how these tour came about; so, here's a short time line: Episode 157 - I interviewed David Warne from the Sydney Tall Ships business We became friends, but then he disappeared, only to pop up about two years ago. He'd moved to The Philippines with his family, along with the whole back office of the Sydney Tall Ships business as well. That resulted in a 90% reduction in running costs, and a 21% increase in turnover. That called for another interview - which appeared in Episode 254. During that interview he had some great tips on how to effectively outsource to The Philippines. Then, in 2015, I then took a group of listeners over to The Philippines on a business outsourcing tour. I saw specialists in bookkeeping, accounting, CAD drawings, graphic design, social media management, inbound and outbound calling and heaps more. Teams – If you're going to outsource and plan to put on multiple staff around the one discipline (eg. marketing or finance or admin), then it makes sense to have them all in one place, like Brendan and Amanda have done. And I don't mean the same country, or city. I mean in the one building. We visited multiple businesses that make this possible. Don't make this bigger than it needs to be – what we're really talking about here is simply employing people. How to Create 2 Million Dollars a Year in Passive Income with Nathan Birch It seems like a crazy dream to be able to retire from full-time work at the age of 24 and still have $2 million land in your account every year when you hit 30, but Nathan Birch is living proof that it is possible. For him it was all about setting the right goals, week by week, year by year, and more generally, working hard now to earn the right to not have to work as hard later. This seems like such an obvious mantra, but that’s why listening to Nathan is so inspiring, because every single one of us is actually capable of doing the things he does. His methods have empowered him to build an empire of 170 properties, but even for people who are just starting out who only want to buy one or two properties, his advice is indispensable. Below is a summary of what made Nathan successful in property, which makes for a mighty fine template of how to succeed in business and in life in general: ** Have a plan with clearly defined goals, and then map out every step you think is required to achieve them (this seems so obvious, but a dream can only become an achievable goal once every step is broken down into small, achievable chunks) ** Document the goals and keep reviewing them ** Don’t be put off by naysayers (but rather than ignore them, rationalise their point and disprove it with your own logic) ** Be persistent – if you have an idea, don’t just leave it as an idea… take action! ** Don’t make business decisions based on emotion, i.e. “this property looks really nice, I could totally live here”… you need to make sure the numbers add up ** Don’t underestimate the value of properties in areas that are thought to be undesirable ** Try and take your time to find a property under the market value, which gives you a profit margin from the beginning ** It’s never too late! (Colonel Sanders was in his 60s when he opened his first KFC) More generally, the most important thing is to really understand exactly what you want a property to do for your life.  When Nathan picked up a magazine at the age of 13, he was certain that property could make him wealthy and give him security, so he did his damnedest to make that happen by getting two full-time jobs and saving enough money to buy his first unit when he was 18. Everyone’s story and aspirations will be different, but Nathan has proven that property as a means to security is a good path to go down, especially considering the increasing volatility of the superannuation/pensions market.
