Hello and welcome back
Hey poddy fam! Today I have a very special episode with Daniel Flynn, one of the visionary founders behind Thankyou. Prepare to be inspired as we uncover the story and mission behind Thankyou and we go right back to the very beginning to 2008 where Daniel, Justine and Jarryd founded Thankyou to help bridge the gap between extreme poverty and extreme consumerism. It's a brand you would see in Coles, Woolies and even 7/11 that has given over $18.1M back to those who are in need. This isn't any regular business though, the Thankyou Group is 100% owned by the Thankyou Charitable Trust which distributes funds to their impactful change makers. Just like every episode, Daniel talks us through the highs and lows of his journey to success. What started as a "simple" water bottle, grew into an array of products designed for multi use - to put an end to over consumption and be kinder to humans and the environment! This is definitely one for the books, let's get into it!@thankyouaus@thelazyceo_podcast Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Today's guest is Daniel Flynn, co founder of Thankyou, a business I was fortunate enough to come across many years ago when they first started out as Thankyou Water. Since then Daniel and his team have built a globally recognised social enterprise on a mission to end extreme poverty. In this episode Daniel shares the journey they've taken to reimagine their business model many times over. From expanding into products, taking on the big supermarkets to get stocked, harnessing the power of social media and their audience to support their mission and more recently taking the company to the global stage. An insightful episode about what it really takes to build a brand that lasts, sticking to your brand values and what you set out to achieve no matter how many hurdles and temptations to divert your encounter and taking care of your mental health as a founder. Etienne Salborn is the founder of SINA (the Social Innovation Academy), a talent campus in Uganda. He also serves as a lecturer for social entrepreneurship at the Management Center Innsbruck and the ESCP Business School, resource person for the Asian Productivity Organization and facilitator for the ChangemakerXchange. His expertise and leadership have earned him recognition as an “AACSB Influential Leader 2021” and he was named an Innovation Ecosystem Builder Fellow by MIT D-lab in 2018.The Berlin-born social entrepreneur has had quite the life journey since taking off for Uganda at age 18 for a volunteering community service (an option to eschew the German military service). In his conversation with Anne, he tells her about how he set up his first and then second non-profit organisations after he found his life's mission: to support the empowerment of marginalised youth in rural Uganda. We discuss his very special master's program in Austria, called Peace, Development, Security and International Conflict Transformation, and how it led him into a journey of self-discovery and experiential learning (which included simulation of a conflict war zone as well as mindfulness, meditation and contemplation on Austria's mountains in minus 27 degree Celsius).Etienne explains how SINA came to be, what three pillars underpin the project and how young students, or SINA scholars, are onboarded and grow their roles within the community, built as a self-organised system that runs on what the concept of ‘freesponsibility' (freedom + responsibility). With people living and working in the community, Etienne explains how they have used models from Nonviolent Communication, holacracy, and his master's program facilitation tools to help navigate change, conflict and feedback — something of a challenge in a flat structure of 60+ individuals. SINA's goal is to help young people unleash their potential, create their own change and build their own social enterprises. Etienne shares how SINA has grown into a replicable model, building a new generation of social entrepreneurs who are solving challenges for society and the environment. With more than 12 communities across Uganda and other African countries, Etienne talks about what's next, how we can support, engage with and even visit SINA, and why we should all explore the power of community. A unique interview with a thoughtful and impact-driven changemaker. Hour 1: Mark Reardon welcomes Dave Strom, associate editor of HotAir.com, to discuss his new article, "Not ALL reporters are trash, but..." and the call to pause A.I. development until there is a better understanding of them. “What the? Thirty companies? I can barely run one!” Daniel Flynn couldn't believe what he was hearing. As co-founder and managing director of thankyou, Daniel was struggling to keep a cool head, and asked a mentor for some advice. That mentor ran 30 companies, and his advice was that Daniel should clear his calendar for one day a week, every week, and use that day for thinking. Initially, it sounded impossible. How do you remove yourself from the day-to-day work of your company a fifth of the time without everything falling apart? And yet, his mentor was doing it while running a small empire! So Daniel decided to try it out, and he hasn't looked back. He calls them “blue sky days”, and while he might sometimes use them to write content or to solve an immediate problem, they're usually blocked off for, well, blue sky thinking. For the kind of untethered, meandering daydreaming that produces big ideas. Daniel shares some of the prompts that guide his thinking on blue sky days, and his methods for protecting his time when more “urgent” concerns pop up. Since it was founded in 2008, the social enterprise Thankyou has raised over $17.5 million dollars for its impact partners on a mission to eradicate extreme poverty. Thankyou has always done things differently, taken risks and creatively disrupted systems that need to change and it's been quite the rollercoaster. From their original campaign to sell bottled water to fund life-changing water projects in developing nations, to abandoning that campaign (you can read about why below), Thankyou has been quick to adapt and has never shied away from setting audacious goals. There was the cheeky marketing campaign that leveraged the support of customers and community to encourage Coles and Woolies to stock Thankyou (it worked), to the most recent campaign to leverage the reach and power of the biggest product companies in the world to partner with Thankyou and redistribute profits to impact partners (a work in progress - check out the 'no small plan' link below)Oh, and there was the best-selling, groundbreaking book 'Chapter One' that documents it all, albeit in a typically unconventional way. It's been a fascinating journey and I've always been fascinated by the people who make this kind of big, systemic change happen. In this case, its Daniel Flynn. In this episode we talk about the challenges of running a purpose driven social enterprise during a time of rampant capitalism, during a pandemic whilst up against the might and power and control of global multinationals. And, we talk about the personal challenges that Daniel experiences as he grows as a human, a husband, a father and a leader.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.MichaelThankyou website The 7-Eleven campaignThe Coles & Woolworths campaign Chapter One bookWhy Thankyou is no longer selling bottled waterNo Small Plan campaignTo subscribe to the Satisfied Mind newsletter - join us here.

You've got big ideas… Big dreams for your company… Maybe even for the world! But how do you keep those big dreams and ideas alive on a day-to-day basis? Daniel Flynn knows a thing or two about keeping big ideas alive. He founded thankyou with hopes of ending poverty, and they're still making moves on this front, more than a decade on. And Daniel says the key is to make time and space for big-picture thinking, even when it feels like your workload wants you to do otherwise. Daniel sets aside one day a week for what he calls “blue-sky thinking”, and he protects it like nothing else. No emails, no texts, no slack messages; nothing but his imagination. As he was starting the Australian product brand, Thankyou, Daniel Flynn asked how he could reconcile a world where the bottled water industry was worth $50 billion annually while people were dying from lack of access to clean water. With childlike faith, he and two partners, began brainstorming seemingly wild solutions that they thought might just work. From there, Thankyou has grown to become a million-dollar social enterprise selling world-class products from food, to soap, to baby care. The company is known for their creative solutions to serve those in extreme poverty, including directing 100% of profits to a charitable trust, and publishing a book to fund expansion. In this podcast, Daniel talks about the importance of stepping out in faith and how renting helicopters can help your marketing plan.

Daniel Flynn is an eco-warrior. As the managing director and co-founder of Thankyou, Daniel and his team are flipping consumerism on its head to deliver meaningful change. In a world where brands often pay lip service to social impact, Thankyou is the real deal. Since launching Thankyou in 2008, the brand has grown from selling a single product to over 50 lines that are available in supermarkets all over Australia. The ethos of Thankyou is simple: to create a better world where no one lives in poverty and as co-founder, Daniel is leading the charge.
Today I bring you an inspiring conversation with Daniel Flynn, co-founder of Thankyou, a for profit social enterprise selling consumer products* where 100% of profits go to funding projects globally that are aimed at ending extreme poverty and owned 100% by a Charitable Trust. The topic for today's conversation is ‘Leading with Purpose' and Daniel shares his story from the very first moment he knew that he needed to do something big and that nothing would stop him or his co-founders (best mate and girlfriend now wife). What I love about this conversation is that we dive deep from the outset and Daniel's willingness to share so openly makes for an experience that epitomises the essence of rawthenticity. Here are a few of the golden nuggets gleaned from our conversation:- Great journeys begin with a moment; the moment that started a movement The irony of water consumption and Thankyou's first product What stops us from taking action to make the unseen seen The phenomenon of cause fatigue The rollercoaster journeys of Thankyou as highlighted in Daniels' book ‘Chapter One' When the going gets tough and you feel like quitting The significance of mentors Daniel's journey to discover his purpose – peeling back the onion layers (key questions to reflect on) The power of silence to reveal our purpose Is my ladder up against the right wall? A profound definition of leadership The gift of a youthful, childlike mindset Blue sky days Being ruthlessly open and transparent A definition of integrity The 5 core values that drive Thankyou's culture Daniel's experience of being interviewed by Barack Obama Practical and precious advice for those struggling with their purpose The power of ‘what if?' The strength of the Thankyou tribe of supporters and Thankyou's bold and cheeky supermarket campaign *I've been buying Thankyou's product for years; they are great quality and highly affordable -available in a supermarket near you! Daniel Flynn is co-founder of Thankyou, a social enterprise that was founded in 2008 and sells consumer products to help end extreme poverty. In 2015 Daniel's book, Chapter One, became a bestseller and generated $1.4 million in sales in its first month using an unorthodox “pay-what-you-want” model. In his conversation with Adam, Daniel discusses his belief that “leaders are learners”, and how working with a psychologist to come to terms with some of his personal challenges helped him grow into the leader he is today. In this episode of Add To Cart, we checkout Daniel Flynn from Thankyou. They burst onto the scene with bottled water that was doing good and now 12 years later Thankyou has raised over $17 million to impact the lives of people across 22 countries… and no longer do bottled water. Many of you will be familiar with Thankyou and its mission to redistribute wealth from consumer spending. We are living in a time where extreme poverty and extreme consumerism live side by side - Daniel and his team are looking to rebalance that equation. Thankyou is stocked in major retailers including Coles, Woolworths and Chemist Warehouse, and a whole bunch of eCommerce stores including Amazon, Catch, Nourished Life and BaoBag. On their own site - they only sell one product - Chapter One, the first part of the Thankyou story. And it's not a bad product - so far raising more than $2.6m to supercharge their impact. Daniel Flynn, co-founder of Thankyou, is one of Australia's most recognisable & successful social entrepreneurs. He is the recipient of EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award (Southern Region) and Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs.Thankyou was conceived while Daniel was still in college and he learned, to his horror, that there were 900 million people who didn't have access to clean water. 4500 kids were dying every day from water-borne disease and the women needed to trek 20km by foot to obtain clean water (they even risked being raped along that trecherous journey!).Determined to make a difference, Daniel, his girlfriend (now wife) Justine and friend, Jared Burns, got together as first-year university students to launch the consumer brand now known as Thankyou.Since 2008, Thankyou has raised over $17 million and impacted the lives of people across 22 countries. Thankyou's products can be found in major retailers across Australia & 100% of its profits go towards ending extreme global poverty.Thankyou has run many viral campaigns. To get 7-Eleven to stock Thankyou Water, they produced a youTube video that asked their followers to visit the 7-Eleven Australia Facebook page to promise to buy Thankyou water if it was stocked. Within two weeks, they had fans singing, dancing and rapping, and it was covered all over the media. 7-Eleven said yes & Thankyou became the third best selling brand (they were also top at certain points in time).A similar viral campaign happened when they tried to get Coles and Woolworths, which controlled over 70% of Australia's grocery market share, to stock Thankyou products. This time, they launched a video called the Coles and Woolworths campaign and also had two helicopters flown over Coles and Woolworths' respective headquarters in Melbourne and Sydney. Unsurprisingly, both said yes!And again in 2015, Daniel wrote a bestselling book, Chapter One, which generated over $1.4 million in sales & sold over 55,000 copies in its first month using an unorthodox ‘pay-what-you-want' model. However, these viral successes came after Daniel and his team experienced a great deal of setbacks. We explore all that and more in this episode. Daniel Flynn and the Co-Founders of Thankyou are changing the world through business. At 19-years-old, they started Thankyou as a social enterprise and a decade later they've been able to donate a massive $17 million to help end extreme poverty from the profits of the incredible products they sell. But for Daniel and his team, this journey hasn't been easy, especially as a 'for-purpose' business against the 'Goliaths' in the FMCG industry. They've gone through multitudes of challenges, barriers, and hurdles over the past 13 years, and each time, they've harnessed the ability to think outside of the box, away from tradition, and achieve astronomical results. How have they been able to utilise mass consumer spending to channel it to those in need? What are the innovative strategies and mindsets they've used to get past the obstacles in their path? And what can any business owner do better when it comes to embedding true purpose into actual action, and not just have purpose "painted on the wall"? This is a rollercoaster of an episode of The Make It Happen Show suited for a rollercoaster of a journey — take a listen if you too, want to break out of the mould and do the 'impossible', just as Daniel and Thankyou have. Emma Doyle had the pleasure of meeting a total young game-changer, in person, back in 2017 named Daniel Flynn. She was blown away and moved by his purpose for being on this planet. He reminds us all to find a mentor who can call you out on your blind spots and ask yourself the question - 'why are you here? What's your purpose?' Be prepared to be inspired. Emma bought a copy of his book and his TEDx talk can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTZC6PmsqGI About Daniel in his own words: In 2008, I led a group of people who launched Thankyou and have seen it grow from a small start-up become one of Australia's leading mainstream social enterprises. 12 years on, Thankyou's products are stocked by major retailers in Australia, with every product contributing to helping end global poverty. To date, Thankyou has raised over $17 million to impact the lives of people across 22 countries. In 2015 I had the privilege of writing a best-selling book, Chapter One, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx44cXeKC7s) a story that generated $1.4 million in sales in its first month using an unorthodox ‘pay-what-you-want' model. I'm passionate about disruptive marketing and am honoured to have led our team to execute some truly unconventional and highly successful campaigns that led to Thankyou products being stocked by some of Australia's biggest retailers. As part of my role, I love to speak to audiences around the world, telling stories and motivating people to realise that they too can make their own ideas a reality.
Daniel Flynn, Ben Witt, and Robin Kalderan decide to test the waters as they discuss their ideas about STEM careers through the raw lens of a discord call.
We live in a world of two extremes - extreme poverty on one end, and extreme overconsumption on the other. Imagine if business could truly eradicate some of the world's most pressing issues... Imagine if we could balance the scales - could we save humanity and the planet in the process? Big questions that we are deep diving into today with Daniel Flynn, co-founder of Thankyou - who produced personal care products for the sole purpose of funding life-changing projects. And who just launched a global campaign asking Unilever and Procter and Gamble if they want to join for the ride. In this podcast episode, Daniel Flynn shares the secret weapon that keeps Thankyou thriving after 12 years, why purpose is the fuel, going deep on the soft stuff so you can handle the hard stuff, the antidote to uncertainty and so much more. Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 178, originally published in October 2013. Daniel Flynn is the former Executive Director of Accuracy in Academia and Editor of the weblog FlynnFiles. He's the author of the new book, "The War on Football: Saving America's Game." In this interview, Flynn responds to Malcolm Gladwell's thesis that football should be banned because players have a greater risk of dying young. Flynn's research leads him to believe that football is safer than skateboarding and theme parks. Flynn also gives us some insight into the lawsuits in youth football and whether football or baseball is really America's game. The topics then switch gears to how low Obama's approval ratings have gone down this summer. Flynn thinks the left hates America and actually has a conservative history. Website: www.FlynnFiles.com
