When our guest posted a video on social media that was irking her in the industry of communications and marketing, we knew we had to get her back on the podcast. In her own words we can plan and construct posts that we hope to get attention, but it is often a personal message, rant almost on practices by others that will get the most attention. The awards Industry is making a lot of money out of naïve and susceptible people who are just looking to compete. What can you do to protect yourself and call out this disturbing trend. Well respected marketer and communications expert Mia Fileman of Campaign Del Mar called out the poor behaviour of the awards that multiple industries are involved in. It is in the same space as a pay to play model that Nic has been very passionate fighting in the ‘fake media' sites promoting businesses in a perceived earned media space. The same for Awards where you don't get a look in if you don't pay for the social media tiles, advertising or support in some way financially. The team aren't anti-Awards. The Telstra Business Awards and excellence Awards that are promoted by reputable associations are still what all businesses should be aspiring to win. It's the Awards that there are no disciplines, no quality control, no assessment and in some cases no application that we want to see phased out. Also, the behaviour of those that have paid for the Award to stop pretending and deceiving their audiences that they are Award winners. A full-on chat where we have tried not to name or call out anyone, but you will be the best judge of what a fake award is and what isn't. We at least give you some good parameters to work through this quite murky behaviour that is preying on the weak and maybe less deserved. All that said there are genuine and amazing Award winners, but potential recipients will have to do their homework to keep their reputation and their budgets in check.

At some stage, we all have to navigate appropriate aged care for ourselves or a loved one, so in this episode we turned to aged care expert Grace Petherick to demystify it for us all. Many of us are in the sandwich generation, and are the support people for parents as well as young children. Some of us are also of an age where we're having to investigate aged care services for ourselves or our partner. This can be an overwhelming task because, let's face it, the aged care system in Australia is complex, unfamiliar and bureaucratic, and if your family member is suffering poor health or has had a health incident, it's all the more anxiety-triggering. About Grace Petherick Global experience in service industries and the shock of accessing aged care for her grandparents sparked Grace Petherick's passion to revolutionise an industry. It became clear for her that what her grandparents had suffered was unacceptable, and it was time to shake up 100 years of unchanged service standards in aged care. Her visionary and innovative approach has attracted extensive investor and media attention, including placing as a finalist in the current Telstra Business Awards and winning a City of Melbourne Innovative Business Grant, for her business Age Up Health. Our recent survey revealed that one in three of our listeners is doing life admin for a parent or elderly relative and that often includes researching aged care services. In this episode we discuss: how the aged care system is very complex and waiting lists can create a lot of stress for families that you shouldn't wait until a crisis occurs to investigate aged care - as soon as everyday things feel harder you should consider investigating options the preventive measures you can put in place - allied health to improve balance, ramps and handrails the differing roles for Residential Aged Care - including temporary respite and rehabilitation after a hospital stay how to fund aged care - the first step should be the government website - My Aged Care you can also find information on aged care provider websites and there are paid aged care advisers you can access the range of services and products that Home Care Package funding can be used for including home modifications, cooking and meal delivery, supplements, companionship and social support - anything to keep you safe and well at home the assessment process for Home Care Packages - government assessors come to your home and consider what support/funding you are eligible for - a letter of support from a GP can be helpful after your Home Care Package is approved - means testing is conducted by Services Australia to determine what (if any) income tested fee you will need to pay (there is an income and asset test similar to that for the Aged pension - the maximum contribution you can make is $40 per day) after an assessment you receive a notification of your level of funding and estimated the waiting time until the funding will be available the wait list for a Home Care Package can be up to 9 months - while you are waiting you may be able to access CHSP or other organisations that may provide support - Carers Gateway and some providers provide limited free support while you wait after the funding comes though you need to select from one of 900 providers within 56 days or you will lose the funding 3 months before your funding is allocated you will receive notification and this is a good time to start selecting a provider things to think about when selecting a provider include: what support you need, what level of admin you are willing to do, how they manage workforce, consistency of workforce, costs (care fee, administration fee, other fees including setup fee, exit fee, surcharges, travel fees) that the comparison websites for Aged Care that exist are commission based - however Aged Care Guide seems to be most representative of the market My Aged Care is an online application system and you don't need a power of attorney to represent your parents as long as your parent advises My Aged Care that you may act on their behalf. In today's episode, I invite Lorraine Murphy back onto the podcast to talk about a central theme of her new book, Step Into You, which is energy management. Needing to create her own 'soft place to land' to go on her own deep healing journey and get clear on what she wanted to create in her life, Lorraine's latest book is about that very journey and how she went about finding a more sustainable way to do business and life by really learning how to manage her energy. We talk about: - Lorraine's own perspective on what energy is and why learning to manage our energy over our time is important - The importance of creating a bespoke energy management plan and giving ourselves permission to follow it - Energy management filtered through both motherhood and a more feminine lens - The impact of using major and minor energy boosts for both major and minor energy leaks - The issues with trying to 'balance ' our lives - What it really looks like to be in alignment and be intentional about how can support ourself best - And what Lorraine came to understand about working with the mind and body and ourselves as unique energy beings, whilst we worked together at her Noosa retreat in 2021. She has been an active leader in the Australian disability community for over 20 years, working at an international, national and local level to change the diversity agenda, while mentoring and supporting numerous people with disabilities to their own leadership success. Christina pioneered the use of mainstream forums by women with disabilities at the United Nations, and now mentors and teaches effective use of the UN for rights activists globally, while working as a leadership coach for people with disabilities. She recently developed Represent, an online course in how to be an effective representative. After 20 years working in community sector management, Christina realized that the levels of violence and marginalization experienced by people with disabilities were the direct outcome of inequality, and that to address this we need a growth in disability leadership right across the public domain. So, Christina established the Disability Leadership Institute in 2016 as a professional hub for leaders with disabilities to build & support our disability leaders. It is the first organization of its kind globally, run by and for disability leaders. The DLI aims to grow the presence and recognition of disability leaders across all sections of our community. Christina is also a regular keynote speaker and commentator. In 2013 Christina was acknowledged as one of 100 women of the Canberra Centenary. She was a finalist in the 2014 ACT Telstra Businesswomen's Awards, and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in Inclusion at the 2015 ACT Chief Minister's Inclusion Awards. Christina was a 2017 Westpac Social Change Fellow. The Disability Leadership Institute was a finalist in the 2018 Telstra Business Awards emerging and energized category. ------------ The Enabled Disabled Podcast is created for adults and children with disabilities, families and friends who care for them, professionals who treat and help people with disabilities, as well as people and companies who want to learn more. Rebecca (Bex) Weller is one of my favorite people to talk with about why life without alcohol is awesome. Bex is a Health & Life Coach from Perth, Australia. She's the founder of Sexy Sobriety and the author of two books, A Happier Hour and Up All Day. The work Bex does is centered around helping women discover how much they gain once they put down the wine glass. She works with women to get their sparkle back after it's been dulled by drinking and hangovers. In our conversation today Bex and I talk about how life without alcohol can be fun and sexy, adventurous, joyful and (most of all) carefree. Bex says the biggest benefit she's found in sobriety is the feeling of freedom. Bex discovered that after (finally) saying “I'm not drinking at all anymore” she suddenly had the headspace, heart space, courage and energy to reach her potential and build the life she really wanted. She felt free for the first time. So if you're holding on to drinking because you're afraid that life without alcohol will be boring or dull, this is the episode for you! In this episode, Bex and I dive into: Why to make a list of “10 Things Better Than Booze” (and then all the other lists!) Tips on how to make alcohol-free life more exciting and fun Why to focus on everything you're gaining by not drinking, not what you're giving up How to coach yourself through triggers and cravings and nurture yourself from the inside out Why sobriety is better than moderation (spoiler: it's the freedom) Why to not focus on the concept of ‘forever' “You know what's a hell of a lot more glamorous than champagne and cocktails? Self-worth, empowerment, creativity, connection, and SOUL.” - Bex Weller About Rebecca Weller Rebecca is the Creator of SexySobriety.com, she leads one-on-one and group coaching programs, hosts live events, and is the author of the best-selling memoir, A Happier Hour, and the long-awaited follow-up, Up All Day. Louise is the owner of Lollypotz, a hamper business offering a wide range of gifts for all manner of occasion and type of person. Louise has been in business since 1999, so, at time of recording, that’s 20 years. The interesting thing about that is that, when you look at a hamper business, it doesn’t have low barriers to entry and it is very easy for competitors to browse other’s sites and copy product offerings and even price them lower. That’s an important point and really does go to underline the abilities of Louise and her success in growing her business including being either a finalist or winner in various categories of the Telstra Business Awards, over numerous years, including being named as the winner in the Business Owner category of the 2013 Telstra ACT Business Women's Awards. We kick off season two of the Drinks Adventures podcast with a in-depth look at the brewery founded in Byron Bay, Australia in 2008, Stone & Wood Brewing Company.Stone and Wood celebrated its tenth anniversary last year and I started covering drinks as a journalist not long after Stone & Wood started brewing. As such, I've followed their evolution very closely over the years, reporting on their key milestones along the way, which has given me a lot of insight into their business and some excellent resources to draw upon in putting this story together. But in fact, this story isn't only about Stone & Wood, it's also a bit of a look at the current state of play in Australian independent brewing, an industry sector that is in the midst of an unprecedented boom that is not without its challenges. The Drinks Adventures podcast is proudly supported by our friends at Bintani, Australia’s leading supplier of ingredients for the brewing and distilling industries.Bintani has all the ingredients you need, and they have experts in all categories on the team, so they understand how ingredients work together like no one else in Australia.NB: Since recording this documentary earlier this year, Alexis Roitman has departed her role as CEO of the Independent Brewers Association. We wish her the best of luck. This episode would not have been possible without the generosity of the organisations that gave me permission to use their audio.Thank you to the Telstra Business Awards, Finance News Network and Matt Kirkegaard at Australian Brews News. Thanks also to the wonderful music acts that cleared their tracks for use on the show: From London, Asad Rizvi AKA Silverlining; From New York City, No Regular Play and from my home town of Sydney, We Lost The Sea.If you watched the recent Ricky Gervais series After Life on Netflix, you may have heard We Lost The Sea's tune A Gallant Gentleman feature on the soundtrack.Ricky is a big We Lost The Sea fan and I'm privileged to be able to use that same track on this episode of the podcast. And thank you to Dave Robertson for his massive efforts in mixing and editing this episode and all episodes in Season Two.If you enjoyed this episode on Stone & Wood, go back to Season One, Episode Three and check out my interview with Janice McDonald, who was the first head brewer at Little Creatures. It'll give you some fantastic insights into Australian independent brewing in the decades prior to Stone & Wood's arrival.Thank you to the companies that have sponsored the Drinks Adventures podcast as of this year. The support of our major partner Bintani Australia and other brands makes the show viable, so I'm very grateful for it and I'm sure our listeners are too.I know some listeners enjoyed the weekly giveaways we had throughout season one. Steve talks the 2018 Telstra Business Awards.
Mat Stillone is an award-winning Gen Y entrepreneur who runs several businesses. His story starts off rather bumpy and it will make you question yourself and your ability to deal with what he had to go through, but don’t worry it’s not all bad, just a boat load to deal with as a young bloke.Mat made it onto the other side of his challenges and has achieved incredible success in a relatively short period of time, and as you will see, that it is no accident at all. His dedication to excellence and to providing his customers with the absolute highest quality products has been critical to the growth of his business.Mat was awarded Business News Australia’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Wholesaling, Manufacturing and Distribution, in both 2015 and 2016, and was shortlisted for the Optus & Telstra Business Awards in 2016, in the Queensland micro-business category.Mat’s enthusiasm for life and his dedication to business and providing the very best for his customers is infectious and I know you are going to learn a lot from his GO ALL IN story. Please help me in welcoming Mat Stillone.
Today we are joined by Barry Magliarditi. Barry is the Founder and Director of The Game Changers. He has been recognized for his work in Thought Leadership by The 30 Under 30 and the 2015 Telstra Business Awards. He was most recently selected as the 2016 winner of the Inbia Innovation of Excellence in Business Coaching. But before all the awards and recognition he launched his first business in the Kitchen and Renovation sector. The business scaled up quickly from the ‘home garage' stage right to a staff of 15 people and multiple millions in annual revenue. This was what success, looked like. Or so he thought.. As he diligently managed cash flow, maximised profits, and minimized expenses by setting clear KPIs for both the business and the team, the emotional and time investment required quickly led him to exhaustion and burnout. He was a father and a partner and there was no time left over to invest in those relationships. When he saw what was happening, he shifted his focus but now the business suffered. Without the heavy personal and financial supports that Barry had been providing, the business started to dissolve. And so Barry turned to education and personal development to get his business and his life back on track without letting either suffer. Soon life started to come back into balance. Through examining his ‘inner game,' Barry was able to achieve tangible results to his ‘outer game.' This trial by fire became the backbone for The Game Changers and, since it's founding, has been helping business owners have experience exponential growth in their businesses while watching their personal lives blossom.I've asked him to join us here today so we can all improve our inner game so our outer game does better. Enjoy!!! --- My mission is to create 200 new multi-millionaire business owners. How? You'll do better when you know better. Would it help you to have a mentor who can cut your learning curve by sharing their mistakes with you so you could avoid them? Would it help you to talk to that mentor and learn how they shifted their mindset to allow success to happen in the first place? Would it help you to hear them talk to other high-level entrepreneurs about their journeys, their mistakes and how they overcame their challenges to create the lives and financial success they desire? The Best Business Podcast was created for you to have all this in one place. If you like it, please subscribe, give an honest review and share with a friend you think will benefit so I may serve you both together. "Your success is my success." -- Daryl Urbanski

I remember my days working for Australia's biggest travel agent - I absolutely dreaded wearing their corporate uniform. I felt like such a dag. Polyester shirt, navy slacks. In fact, I think the tie was even on a bit of elastic! Where was today's guest when I needed her?! She runs a very disruptive uniform business - that even Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow loves! Her name is Felicity Rogers and she started Cargo Crew. I met her a couple of months ago at the Telstra Business Awards where I was the emcee. In fact, the year before, Cargo Crew actually won the National Small Business Award! So, what's Cargo Crew. Well, as Felicity says “She's building a brand that crews (that's her funky word for workers) around the world love to wear”. She goes on to say “Cargo Crew creates original, design led uniforms that enhance and compliment a business' visual identity and brand language.” Cargo Crew now exports to over 30 countries with 12,000 crews around the world wearing their uniforms. Their clients include Renault, Hoyts & Freedom Furniture, artisan coffee roasters Seven Seeds and even Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop skin care business. Felicity shares: The power of a good corporate uniform Why your business's visual language is important How she got a massive international contract by advertising in a little magazine How Gwyneth Paltrow came to wearing a Cargo Crew apron Plus we talk pricing, photography, retail vs online and plenty more BTW, during the interview, Felicity forgot to tell us about another big win, which I'll share with you after the interview. Plus I have some feedback from a listener who's been inspired to create a podcast herself. And we revisit a past episode in which Australia's voice of online retail shares some gold. Sam Reid is the co-founder of cider brand Willie Smiths. I meet Sam at the recent Telstra Business Awards in Tasmania. Now, one of my jobs as the emcee was to announce the finalists for each category and read out a short bio about their business. Each business always got a round of applause … although some got a bigger applause than others. Willie Smith's Cider got the biggest by far …. Quite heartfelt, it was! So, in kicked my marketing brain. What are they doing that other businesses aren't? What makes them so special? Basically … Why all the love?! At the end of the night I suggested he come on the show and reveal his secret sauce. “Hell yeah!” was his measured response. So, here's Sam Reid, co-founder of Willie Smith's Cider. Also in this episode of your favourite marketing podcast, I share my top 10 ice-breaker questions that I use during pre-interview chats, and in general when meeting people for the first time. We've covered this at length in past episodes - but if you want to cut to the chase, check out Cornerstone Business Solutions - an off-shoring business that I have an interest in, I believe in it so much. “We're all about being memorable” - Are you? If not, why not? I'm guessing as a listener of this show you are constantly looking for ways to stay on your customers' shopping list. Every industry is ripe for disruption. That's the view of today's guest, 29 year-old Dominic Holland of tow.com.au. Launched just two years ago, tow.com.au has completely disrupted the long-established and tightly held towing industry. The business did 7-figure revenues in year one and grew in year two by 350%. Listen in as Dom explains how to disrupt any industry. [Tweet "This business did 7-figure revenues in year one. And grew by 350% in year two! Here's how."] [Tweet "'We've found something that clients are demanding and begging us for.' @dommholland"] The amazing thing is, software engineer Dom, knew nothing about towing. What he did understand was that technology is shaking the foundations of every industry. That every industry has massive potential, and it's just about working up the right model that delivers customers what they want, and makes it incredibly easy for them to use you. [Tweet "'Everyone coming to your site looks for the same thing – give it to them immediately'@dommholland"] Dom himself was last year awarded Queensland's Young Entrepreneur of the year, and recently won the New Business Category at the 2016 Telstra Business Awards. I gotta tell ya, this chat is dripping with marketing gold, as Dom explains: How and why to disrupt your industry A pro-tip for ensuring your website converts visitors to buyers A simple hack to automating those annoying tasks in your business Why Google Adwords is better than trying to rank organically And so much more…. Seriously, hit pause and grab your journal. You know, there was so many learnings in this interview that I've captured them all in this blog post How a very disruptive business did 7-figure revenues in year one – with Dominic Holland of Tow.com.au. Plus I share a voicemail I received from a listener and very motivated business owner who read The Boomerang Effect recently, and has seen some outstanding results in his business. Enjoy this one … and remember, there's magic in taking action.
