We've talked many times on The Vergecast about the dream of the perfect charger. We call it The God Cable, and imagine it would charge everything, at full optimized speed, no matter what you plug in. Well, one company tried to make it – sort of. TwelveSouth founder Andrew Green joins the show to talk about how his company developed its newest product, the PowerCord, and why actually the God Cable might be both impossible and a bad idea. After that, The Verge's Tina Nguyen joins the show to talk about her experience at Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas, the rise of $TRUMP, and how crypto and the government became so intertwined. Finally, we answer a question from the Vergecast Hotline about AI agents, and the tasks we should (and shouldn't) offload to our chatbots. You're Listening to Parallax Views https://parallaxviews.podbean.com/ Support the Show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/parallaxviews Recorded: 11-14-24 On this edition of Parallax Views, Tina Nguyen, author of The MAGA Diaries: My Surreal Adventures Inside the Right-Wing (And How I Got Out) and the resident "MAGA Whisperer" at Puck News, joins the show to discuss elements of her book, specifically the MAGA media ecosystem (ie: Tucker Carlson, amongst others), as well as the think tank she believes deserve more attention than Project 2025: the America First Policy Institute. Given that Linda McMahon, a key player at AFPI, is heading up the Trump transition team I reached out to Tina to discuss her thoughts on AFPI and how it fits into Trump's plans for his 2nd term. Tina argues that the Heritage Foundation, which drafted Project 2025, is an older institution than Trumpism with a conservative agenda that has been around for decades prior to Trumpism. AFPI, on the other hand, is a new institution and one that is grounded less in a decades-spanning conservative agenda and more in loyalty or fealty to President-elect Donald J. Trump himself. She says that while Heritage Foundation/Project 2025 figures will have a role in the Trump administration, it will be loyalists from AFPI that will be doing the management of much of the administration on behalf of Trump. All of this analysis is based on Nguyen's own contact with the MAGA world. We discuss all that and much more in the conversation on this edition of Parallax Views!

With the New Yorker office closed for the July 4th holiday, The Political Scene brings you a recent episode from Vanity Fair's “Inside the Hive,” hosted by the special correspondent Brian Stelter. Tina Nguyen, a national correspondent for Puck, and the Washington Post's Isaac Arnsdorf, a national political reporter, join Stelter to discuss how Steve Bannon helped rehabilitate Donald Trump among Republicans after January 6th. Bannon's popular “War Room” podcast has been galvanizing the far right at the local and national level, and his four-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress could actually burnish his bona fides with the base. “It's amazing clout,” Nyugen says of Bannon's prison sentence, “for someone in the MAGA world, in these MAGA times, with a MAGA audience.”This episode originally aired on June 20th, 2024.To discover more from “Inside the Hive” and other Vanity Fair podcasts, visit vanityfair.com/podcasts.
Tina Nguyen joins Peter Hamby to offer her insider's view of Donald Trump's recent intimations about exacting revenge on his political enemies. Gotta admit: This was fun! Tina Nguyen, national correspondent for Puck and author of THE MAGA DIARIES, gives us an inside look at the complexities within the right-wing movement, Trump's influence, the dynamics at play in today's Republican party and her behind-the-scenes perspective at different political events (yes, those events). She also talks about what it was like to write this book and her approach to handling social media and online interactions. Oh, and Corey couldn't help asking Tina about working for Tucker Carlson, the influence he wields and how she views him today. Tina's so candid about the worlds she's navigated, whether it's the conservative movement on campuses, the siloed ecosystem of right-wing media and even fringe ideas like the Convention of States initiative. It was also good to hear how Tina found a foothold beyond those early experiences and into other publications like Vanity Fair, Mediaite, Politico and now Puck. 00:05 Introduction to Tina Nguyen; 04:43 Understanding the Dynamics of the Activist Right; 14:35 The Influence of Media on Politics; 21:52 The Impact of Tucker Carlson on American Discourse; 31:25 Reflecting on Personal and Professional Trajectories; 38:59 Influence and Social Pressure in DC; 41:10 The Consequences of Speaking Out; 46:07 The Importance of Relationships in Career Development; 48:40 The Challenges of Social Media and Public Perception; 53:55 The Threat of the Convention of States It would mean so much if you could leave us a review on Apple Podcasts: https://bit.ly/TPandRPod Talkin' Politics & Religion Without Killin' Each Other is part of The Democracy Group, a network of podcasts that examines what's broken in our democracy and how we can work together to fix it. Tina Nguyen is a national correspondent for Puck covering the world of Donald Trump and the American right for their The Best & The Brightest newsletter. Previously, Nguyen was a White House reporter for Politico, a staff reporter for Vanity Fair Hive, and an editor at Mediaite. Her new book, The MAGA Diaries: My Surreal Adventures Inside the Right-Wing (And How I Got Out) is a dazzling memoir of Tina's fast, furious, stressful and altogether bonkers time in the world of the Conservative movement long before it was destroyed and devoured by Trumpworld. Tina talks to Adam about her growing up in Boston as the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, how she ended up at the prestigious but right-wing Xanadu known as Claremont McKenna College, and her short but not insignificant stint at The Daily Caller working for its then founder, Tucker Carlson. They explore her front row seat to the rise of what is now the MAGA movement, and how she ended up on the other side of this dystopia, mostly unscathed, but nonetheless loaded with insight as how to best cover Trumpism with all the scrutiny it most definitely deserves.Tina also gives Adam the tea on some of the more sobering realizations which came to her in her post-Conservative days about some of her previous colleagues and their not so nice agendas. Tina's story, which is indeed essential reading , is also a must listen for Dirty Moderates everywhere. Thanks for helping us save democracy one episode at a time! Tina Nguyen, national correspondent at Puck News, joins Offline to talk about her new memoir, “The MAGA Diaries.” The book sheds light on the conservative movement's college recruitment pipeline, and how it's propelled a new generation of alt-right leaders to the upper echelons of American politics, courts, and social movements. Tina chronicles how this shadowy network helped her start out in the world of right-wing journalism, what compelled her to eventually defect to the mainstream, and all the MAGA mad caps she met along the way.But first! Between 2008 and 2012, Tina Nguyen was a politics-obsessed college student and right-wing activist at Claremont McKenna College. Swept up by conservative rhetoric and promises of paid internships and scholarships, Nguyen was privy to the early days of the movement now known as MAGA. Now, Nguyen is pulling back the curtain not just on her own story within the alt-right but the full history of the movement, exposing how the right recruits, trains, indoctrinates and builds entire networks of power to bend America to its nativist will. Based on years of dogged reporting and interviews with countless people—from downing margaritas with the first Breitbart writers to pouring over conspiracy theories sent by COVID-19 deniers and even working for Tucker Carlson in the early days of The Daily Caller — The MAGA Diaries paints a shocking picture of a shameless movement that will do anything to triumph over the left, even if it means destroying every mechanism of government this country holds dear. In The MAGA Diaries, Nguyen blows the whistle on these dangerous extremists for the first time, shining a light on the systematized on-ramp for young Republicans. These are the new leaders of the right, and we must start paying attention.
Host Reed Galen is joined by Author and Resident MAGA Expert/Insider at Puck, Tina Nguyen. They discuss Tina's brand new book, The MAGA Diaries: My Surreal Adventures Inside the Right-Wing (And How I Got Out), the state of the GOP and how the far right has taken over, and why the media reacts the way it does to MAGA messaging.
