The Ministry of Welcome: Creating Meaningful Experiences Through Hospitality With Nathan Woods and Mark SandenoIn this episode, Mark Sandeno sits down with Nathan Woods, a hospitality expert and founder of The Ministry of Welcome, to explore the transformative power of authentic hospitality in business and life. From driving truck parts to revolutionizing customer experiences at major brands, Nathan shares his journey and insights on creating meaningful connections through intentional welcome.Key Highlights:The Journey to Hospitality Nathan's origin story begins with driving truck parts in Eugene, Oregon, where he developed his vision statement: "Creating opportunities for others to experience joy." This led him to pursue a master's in hospitality and work with TrackTown USA managing VIP hospitality for the Olympic trials. His entrepreneurial journey continued as he co-founded Run Gum, growing it from a closet startup to achieving national retail distribution.Building Authentic Community Nathan emphasizes the importance of genuine customer engagement beyond transactions. At Run Gum, they achieved 30-40% revenue from email marketing by focusing on authentic connections. Their strategy included meaningful social media engagement and in-person events, always prioritizing treating customers as humans first, not just revenue sources.Revolutionizing Direct Booking for Bolt Farm TreehouseDuring his time with Bolt Farm Treehouse in Tennessee, Nathan helped transform their booking model from OTA dependence to achieving 99% direct bookings. Through implementing successful email and SMS marketing strategies, the business grew from 8 to 26 units while maintaining high occupancy rates. This transformation demonstrated the power of owning customer relationships. The Philosophy of Hospitality Nathan breaks down "philoxenia" - the Greek concept of loving strangers - and explains the crucial difference between service (what you have to do) and hospitality (what brings color to interactions). He discusses how this philosophy transforms business culture and customer experience, creating lasting impact through meaningful connections.Practical Implementation Tips Success in hospitality requires mapping the customer journey from first contact to post-experience, finding opportunities for personalization at key touchpoints, and creating memorable moments that evoke positive feelings. Nathan emphasizes the importance of caring for both customers and their families, sharing examples of thoughtful gestures that create lasting impressions.Notable Quotes: "Hospitality is not just about entertainment or hotels - it's about the posture of welcoming people to the space that you're in and being present with them." - Nathan Woods"People forget what you do or what you gave to them, but they'll never forget how you made them feel." - Nathan Woods (paraphrasing Maya Angelou)Resources Mentioned:nathanwoods.me - Nathan's websiteThe Ministry of Welcome newsletter"Unreasonable Hospitality" by Will GuidaraAbout Nathan Woods: Nathan Woods is a hospitality consultant and founder of The Ministry of Welcome. With experience ranging from Olympic event management to scaling direct-to-consumer brands, Nathan helps businesses transform their customer experiences through authentic hospitality practices. We are coming to you from Eugene, Oregon at the Olympic Track Trials for this amazing episode! The main topic was on some inspiring stories from the first half of the Trials, which feels like the ultimate party of the US running world. And like most good parties, it features a lot of Snoop Dogg. We also talked about lessons from Broken Arrow, including Jim Walmsley doing the Vertical Kilometer race prior to the Western States 100, right alongside Anna Gibson racing the VK prior to the Olympic Trials 1500 meters. It's clear that we are seeing something about how this type of skill applies to all types of events, whether those events are 4 minutes or 14 hours! And this one was full of some of the greatest topics! Other topics: our initial thoughts on Oregon and Tracktown USA, getting coaching credentials at the Trials, birthday reflections, a question on salty food options for endurance events, why Broken Arrow was one of the most competitive races ever on US soil, Jade Belzberg's incredible journey for an incredible race in the 23k, Drew Hunter's gutsy 4th place in the Trials 10k, the psychology of racing in heats, why an emphasis on coaches in Olympics coverage makes David nervous, why Megan thinks it's a weak argument, a Western States preview, how this year's race will unfold, the incredible tech of the Coros Arm Band HR monitor, UTMB's new prize money announcement, and hot takes. The episode finishes with a meditation inspired by our spiritual teacher, Ludacris. May all of your days and all of your drinks be crunk. We love you all! HUZZAH! Trucks! We are back with another solo episode focused on reaching new levels in training. This episode dovetails with a recent drastic uptick in miles in my own training as I prepare for the Eugene Marathon. It's very exciting for me and there a lots of information to be gained by breaking it down. Here are some of the points that are covered: Believing 100% in an imperfect training plan is better than the perfect plan that you don't embrace Getting past arguing for my limitations instead of embracing possibility – or at least being curious and open minded about the possibility of surprising Increase in training miles 50 – 53 – 60. First every back to back 50's. First ever 60. What changed? Building on fitness, not overthinking it, embracing the training, not comparing it to the past, allowing the runs to take shape. Finally – knowing that I, and all of us, can do far far more than we think we can Sponsor: Join me in running the 2022 Eugene Marathon! Cate Barrett is a star. Enormously talented, tough, and brilliant. It was an honor to speak with Cate about her post-college running life (she was a six time all-conference at Baylor University) during which she had a some amazing highs, like qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, and several challenges. Cate was able to carve out a niche in the running world as an elite yet not quite professional runner. It's a tricky situation that required her to navigate many of the same obstacles most everyday runners face. Finally, we talk about Cate's running and health journey after giving birth to her daughter roughly a year ago. Often times we hear about the women who bounce back from pregnancy on the quicker end of the spectrum. We have chronicled those stories on this podcast many times. But, the truth is, that isn't the reality for many women. Cate shares her experiences, excitement, and struggles as she continues to be a beacon for runners everywhere. Jocelyn Rivas from South Central Los Angeles is a 24 year old force of nature. She broke the Guinness World Record for the youngest woman to run 100 marathons at the 2021 Los Angeles Marathon. It was perfect symmetry as the LA Marathon was also her first when she was a mere high schooler. Jocelyn also broke the Record for Youngest Latina to run 100 marathons by four years. In 2013, Jocelyn decided to go see her friend run at the LA Marathon at Mile 18. She saw runners of all ages running from teenagers to 60-year-olds. This was the moment that inspired her to run a marathon. Although she knew it was going to be hard due to her medical history of being born with a broken back, neck and feet. She decided she didn't want to limit herself anymore. A couple of months later at 16 years old, she decided to train with Students Run L.A. and she crossed the finish line to her first marathon at the 2014 Los Angeles Marathon. Lace up your running shoes and get the stop watches ready because Timmy Gorman is coming in HOT! Timmy grew up with us in the same home town of Little Silver, NJ. He started his career in track and field during middle school at Markham Place. Then he made the move to Christian Brothers Academy. Freshman year Timmy tried out for the cross country team and was one of the worst runners but kept in the fold and finished his freshman year as one of the top freshman runners. He continued a very strong high school career which led to a 4:12 mile and being recruited by Dartmouth College. He took his talents to Dartmouth and shaved more time off getting his mile down to 4:01. He battled some injuries and earned an extra year of eligibility. It was his senior year that he decided to commit to Tracktown USA aka Oregon University to run and earn his MBA. It was his first year at Oregon that Timmy Gorman broke the 4 minute mile with a time of 3:58. He's one of a very select few runners to ever accomplish this feat. Tim earned his MBA the following year. He took some time off in Baja, Mexico but not for long. He found a job in Mammoth Lakes, California. He walked on the Mammoth Lakes Running Club - this sparked his professional running career. Timmy now is a 3:57 miler and ranked #8 in USA for the mile. H'es working his butt off for a spot to represent team USA in Tokyo 2021. Eugene might be TrackTown USA, but Los Angeles has a good claim to being ThrowsTown USA. Not only does Nick live there, but it is home to UCLA and USC, with two of the nation's top throwing traditions. Five years John Frazier got a unique opportunity as a coach: he got to return to his alma matter UCLA to continue the school's legendary tradition of throws dominance. Since then UCLA throwers have only gotten stronger and Frazier has solidified himself as one of the top shot put coaches in the country, routinely qualifying multiple athletes for the NCAA Championships.
