The case of the Central Park Five is one of the most notorious crime cases in history. In 1989, a young woman named Trisha Meili was jogging in the park when she was attacked, raped, and beaten. But during the investigation, police wrongly accused and convicted five young men of color. They were later exonerated, but only years after already serving a prison sentence. We discuss the issue of wrongful conviction with Jason Flom, Board Member with the Innocence Project and host of the podcast “Wrongful Conviction."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Firefighters have significantly slowed the spread of a smoky wildfire burning near Yosemite National Park that has destroyed 55 homes and other buildings. But thousands of residents of remote California mountain communities are still under evacuation orders. The temperatures in Portland, Oregon, could top 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday amid the hottest stretch of a week-long heat wave in the Pacific Northwest region that rarely experiences such scorching weather. Forecasters have issued an excessive heat warning for parts of Oregon and Washington. Highs in Seattle could hit the 90s and temperatures in eastern Oregon and Washington could close in on 110 F. European Union governments have agreed to ration natural gas this winter to protect against further supply cuts by Russia as it pursues its invasion of Ukraine. EU energy ministers on Tuesday approved a draft European law meant to lower demand for gas by 15% from August through March. Former President Donald Trump is returning to Washington for the first time since leaving office. Trump will address the America First Policy Institute's two-day America First Agenda Summit. President Joe Biden is decrying his predecessor for failing to try and stop the deadly Jan. 6 mob attack on the Capitol, saying “Donald Trump lacked the courage to act.” A Texas jury will hear the first testimony in a civil lawsuit to decide how much Infowars host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones must pay Sandy Hook Elementary School parents for falsely telling his audience that the deadliest classroom shooting in U.S. history was a hoax. At stake for Jones is a potentially major financial blow that could put his constellation of conspiracy peddling businesses into deeper jeopardy. Paul Sorvino, an imposing actor who specialized in playing crooks and cops like Paulie Cicero in “Goodfellas” and the NYPD sergeant Phil Cerreta on “Law & Order,” has died. He was 83. In sports, the Braves, Astros and Dodgers all cool down after sizzling in July, the Red Sox finally get strong pitching and defense, and the NFL has a new way to capture your eyeballs this season. Pope Francis has apologized for the Catholic Church's cooperation with Canada's “catastrophic” policy of Indigenous residential schools. The pontiff says the forced assimilation of Native peoples into Christian society destroyed their cultures, severed their families and marginalized generations in ways still being felt today. Russia's top diplomat says Moscow's overarching goal in Ukraine is to free its people from its “unacceptable regime,” expressing the Kremlin's war aims in some of the bluntest terms yet. Moscow's forces, meanwhile, continue to pummel the country with artillery barrages and airstrikes. The Pacific Northwest is bracing for a major heat wave just as the Northeastern part of the U.S. will soon see a slight break in extreme temperatures. In Washington state and Oregon temperatures are forecast to top 100 degrees Fahrenheit in some places this week as climate change fuels longer hot spells in a region where such events were historically uncommon. Authorities in the Bahamas are combing shorelines and open waters in hopes of finding more survivors after a boat carrying up to an estimated 60 Haitian migrants apparently capsized. Divers have found the bodies of 15 women, one man and a toddler, while another 20 men and five women have been rescued since Sunday, according to Bahamian officials. A mint condition 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card could break records at auction. The auction house estimates it could exceed $10 million. The card's current owner is a New Jersey waste management entrepreneur who bought the rare card for $50,000 in 1991 at a New York City card show. Muhammad Ali's championship belt from his 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” heavyweight title fight has sold at auction for $6.18 million. Heritage Auctions in Dallas said Sunday that the winner of the heated competition for the belt was Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. It turns out millennials haven't strayed very far from the areas where they grew up. A study released Monday by Harvard University and U.S. Census Bureau researchers found that by age 26 more than two-thirds of millennials lived in the same area where they grew up, 80% had moved less than 100 miles away and 90% resided less than 500 miles away. A co-defendant of the so-called Central Park Five has had his conviction on a related charge overturned. Steven Lopez was exonerated Monday in response to requests by his attorney and prosecutors. He had been arrested along with five other Black and Latino teenagers in the notorious 1989 rape and assault on Central Park jogger Trisha Meili. British actor David Warner, whose roles ranged from Shakespearean tragedies to sci-fi cult classics, has died at the age of 80. The versatile performer died from a cancer-related illness on Sunday. Warner had roles in bloody 1971 psychological thriller “Straw Dogs,” 1976 horror classic “The Omen” and 1997 blockbuster “Titanic,” where he played the malicious valet Spicer Lovejoy. Bob Rafelson, an influential figure in the New Hollywood era of the 1970s who was nominated for two Oscars for “Five Easy Pieces," has died. He was 89. On the night of April 19, 1989, a group of 30 to 32 youths ran around the north end of Central Park, causing trouble. A handful of people were attacked, beaten and robbed. Around 1:30 AM, 28 year old jogger, Trisha Meili was found naked and bound in the woods. She had been beaten severely and raped. Her injuries were to the point where doctors assumed that she would die. She was in a coma for 12 days before waking up. NYPD took to the streets, searching for the suspect(s) who did this. Since the group of teens caused havoc, the police were called on them several times that night. Investigators believed the teens had something to do with the assault and rape of Meili. Five black and latino teens were convicted of the attack on Meili. It was later brought to light that the NYPD coerced and pressured the boys into confessing to the rape. Some were not recorded or had wrote a written confession. At trail, it was said that they did confess on paper and camera. In 2002, all charges were dropped, as the five teens, now men, were innocent. Throughout the trial and even up to now, the case is connected to racial profiling, discrimination, and inequality, as the teens were assumed to be guilty based on their race and never got a fair trial.

The attack on the jogger left her in a coma for 12 days. Meili was a 28-year-old investment banker at the time. According to The New York Times, the attack was "one of the most widely publicized crimes of the 1980s".[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Park_jogger_case --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/fyp/message

In the wake of the #OscarsSoWhite movement and the lack of diversity in TV and films, there are some writers, actors, and directors from diverse backgrounds who are changing the narrative. Counter-Stories takes a look at Ali Wong's new film "Always Be My Maybe," an Asian-American rom-com with a twist: Ethnicity isn't central to the plot. And Ava DuVernay's new four-part drama, which follows a group of black and Hispanic teenagers who were convicted (and later exonerated) in connection with the 1989 rape of jogger Trisha Meili, a 28-year-old white investment banker. They look at how the media has perpetuated stereotypes and at times even perverted the course of justice. Hosts are: • Hlee Lee • Luz Maria Frais • Anthony Galloway • Guest host Beverly Bushyhead from MN Urban Indian Advisory Board.

This is not an easy one to write about. In 1989 case of Korey Wise, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Antron McCray and Kevin Richardson has taken new life in the form of of a Netflix TV series. Whenever I talk about the film, I can’t help but mistakenly call it a documentary. Rather that’s a slip of the tongue or just pure negligence on my part, I wont ever know. But what I do know is one thing: This story should be required viewing for everyone, anywhere. In case you haven’t heard the story of the Central Park Five or what is also known as the Central Park Jogger Case, a young woman, Trisha Meili went jogging one night and was brutally attacked. At the same time, several kids were out at night hanging out in the park or wilding as the investigators would later refer to it as they mock the kids in the investigation room. The prosecutor and police decided to convince the boys that they committed the crime and then hang these boys out to dry.A few things happen here: Ava shows us in stark detail how these boys were treated. Ava shows us how their families reacted. Ava shows us how much time as past when the boys (yes they were kids) are locked away and the world passes them by. You are forced to stare as Ava shows you the reality of solitary confinement. And then finally, in one scene that will crumble the soul, we are forced to reckon with the question: What if I had just not gone to the park…Watch this documentary. Watch it all. Don’t forget it. You don’t have a choice. Watch. The HBO miniseries Chernobyl is full of creeping dread as strong the radiation that’s being pumped out. We follow Valery Legasov and Boris Shcherbina, played Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard, as they try to clean up the worst man-made disaster ever. What many don’t realize is how close the world could have come to an end. A quick fact check shows the show is pretty accurate. How’s that for a history lesson?Chernobyl highlights two things, the sacrifices the Russian people made to save the world from their own mistake and the ludicrous, backstabbing, paranoid people who run their government. With every triumph Legasov makes another unforeseen problem arises. The water supply is infected, another even larger explosion happens, killing the world with radioactive fallout. I was on the edge of my seat watching him try to calmly think the problem through as the geiger counter clicks louder and louderOne aspect that I love about this show is the almost still life shots of the abandoned areas. Seeing the empty streets, classrooms, and homes with food on the table creates this haunting eerie motif that carries you through from scene to scene. In the back of your mind you keep telling yourself that they’ll be alright knowing full well that these men were being bombarded with massive doses of radiation shortening their lives.Chernobyl has a supernatural quality to it. It’s real life horror story. Five episodes 1 hour apiece available on HBO. Watch

Ava DuVernay doesn’t like using the term Central Park Five—a moniker created by the press in the aftermath of the notorious and brutal assault of a twenty-eight-year-old woman, Trisha Meili. “They’re not the Central Park Five,” she tells the New Yorker staff writer Jelani Cobb. “They’re Korey, Yusef, Antron, Kevin, and Raymond.” They were five teens who were coerced into confessing to a terrible crime by police determined to find a culprit. It was a time when “the police, the district attorney, the prosecutors [wanted] to get a ‘win’ on the board,” DuVernay thinks, “because there were so many losses, so much going wrong.” Cobb wrote in The New Yorker that “The reaction to Meili’s assault came as the nadir of a two-decade-long spiral of racial animosity driven by a fear of crime,” noting that, in that same week, brutal attacks on women of color failed to generate any headlines or perceptible outrage. The story has returned to public consciousness in recent years because of its role in launching Donald Trump’s political career. One of Trump’s first political acts, in 1989, was to take out a newspaper ad calling for the execution of the boys, and he stuck by his view even after they were exonerated. DuVernay’s goal was to tell the story of those five boys and the men they became. “When They See Us” was released on Netflix on May 31st.

Hi pals, coming up on this week’s episode of Go With The Heat Stan and Sonny infiltrate a group of white supremacists linked to murders in the episode Victims of Circumstance. On This Week In Vice we’re taking a look back to when this episode of Miami Vice aired, from April 30 to May 6, 1989, when Miami Vice was King. Show notes and more: gowiththeheat.com Early show access, stickers and a free mustache! patreon.com/gowiththeheat In news… With the extended period between Vice episodes last week there was more news to cover than time on this show. This week we’re going to go back to mid-April to look at a story I missed. On April 19, Trisha Meili was attacked in Central Park, New York and was eventually dubbed the Central Park Jogger Case or the Central Park Five. After the attack 5 juvenile men where apprehended, charged and convicted of the attack. Through the rest of 1989 and beyond this case has been one of the most covered and perhaps the biggest crime story of the 80’s. In 2002 the confession and DNA evidence from another man found the real attacker and the Central Park 5, who were wrongly convicted, had their charges vacated. In Music… I mentioned last time there was one song I skipped to cover this time on This Week In Vice. From the album of the same name, Madonna’s smash hit Like a Prayer takes over the Hot 100 and keeps it for three weeks. Considered one of Madonna’s best, the song was not without controversy. The music video, directed by the Mary Lambert, was protested by The Vatican and other religious groups. Like a Prayer endured the controversy and is still one of the best pop songs of a generation. In Movies… Speaking of Mary Lambert, Pet Semetary would be number one a the box office until mid-May so we go to the archives and holy smokes there’s a lot to choose from. There are some amazing movies hiding behind Pet Semetary including The Dream Team, a comedy starring Michael Keaton and Christopher Lloyd. Also playing is the legendary sports drama Kevin Costner, the third greatest sports movie behind Major League and of course, Bull Durham. Third on the list of classics is the Jean-Claude Van Damme scifi camp classic Cyborg. I don’t care if a lot of people don’t like Cyborg, in my house we love JCVD and everything he does. Which brings me to the final classic to review this week. Starring John Cusack and directed by Cameron Crowe is the fantastic romantic dramedy Say Anything…. The story, the music, Lloyd Dob
