As a conservative-leaning veteran who considered himself a patriotic defender of freedom, Herer considered the egregious lies and injustice of prohibition a betrayal that called for a protest. Despite being arrested for civil disobedience no fewer than 34 times, never stopped him from advocating for what he believed to be a harmless healing plant with the potential to solve most of the world's most consequential environmental, social and economic problems. He wrote, “If people could be educated to see through these lies, hemp could be rescued from obscurity and save the world because it would stop pine forests from being harvested for paper and Earth's fossil fuel from being refined into filthy gasoline.” We discuss everything about Jack and more today on The Legacy of Jack Herer only on Cannabis Radio.

We believe that those important health choices should be made based upon truthful and accurate information. Of course, Hempfest is about cannabis — industrial hemp, medical marijuana and recreational use by otherwise law-abiding, responsible adults — but since Hempfest is a political rally and demonstration against America’s laws criminalizing and imprisoning people who use cannabis, we see Hempfest as about freedom first, and the cannabis plant second." - Seattle Hempfesthttps://www.hempfest.org/https://www.facebook.com/seattlehempfest/https://www.instagram.com/theseattlehempfest/Support the show (https://www.youtube.com/cannabislegalizationnews)

It’s been 7 years since Washington legalized, but Hempfest, Seattle’s largest and oldest cannabis celebration is under attack from state and local governments. Hempfest co-founder, Vivian McPeak, joins us to talk about how he’s fighting back.Twenty eight years ago a few hundred folks gathered in downtown Seattle to celebrate the publication of Jack Herer’s seminal book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes. In the same way that Burning Man morphed from a local gathering into an international phenomenon, Hempfest caught fire. Every year, 100,000 celebrants gather along the parks bordering Puget Sound to listen to music and speakers, get educated about medical cannabis, register to vote and learn how to expunge their records of cannabis so called crimes. In almost three decades this “protestival,” as Vivian McPeak, Hempfest’s co-founder calls it, has been staged with little incident, accident or emergency. It’s such an inclusive event that in 2013, the year after Washington legalized, the cops handed out bags of Doritos to festival goers stickered with labels explaining the dos and don’ts of the new laws. But today the city and the state (not to mention Expedia.com) are trying to undercut the festival's financing by passing laws and ordinances that make it increasingly impossible for cannabis enterprises to advertise. Under threat, McPeak has initiated legal action against the city and state, challenging the constitutionality of these harsh commercial restrictions. “The city and state are coming after us on multiple levels,” says McPeak. “They’re treating cannabis like it's Oxycontin.” In this interview McPeak wonders aloud if this will be Seattle’s final Hempfest, but as an experienced social justice activist he also has some wise things to say about how to speak “flower to power” without losing your cool (but still maintaining your edge), especially in these incendiary political times.

Founded in 1991, this annual gathering of activists, enthusiasts, and casual users as well as non-users, has captured the attention of this cultural movement from people around the globe. In today's politicized landscape of Cannabis, the event is more important than ever, representing an homage to the rights we citizens have gained, as well as a triumphant display of unity in the face of progress that remains to be made toward full Cannabis normalization. Presently, the city of Seattle and the Liquor and Cannabis Board are actively attempting to silence the right to publicly celebrate this controversial plant. Today on Hempresent our host Vivian McPeak is joined by John Inman. John walked out of the Clay County jail exhausted but determined. In a soft-spoken voice, he explained why he was arrested on marijuana charges and why he believes it was a wrongful arrest. The Clay County Sheriff's arrest report shows he had bags of marijuana, vials of oil, bongs and more. Both Inman and his daughter, Shae, are Medical Marijuana card holders. He said he prefers the organic form of the drug because the marijuana from the state-licensed dispensaries makes him sick. He was arrested on charges of intent to distribute or sell, a charge he denies. Cellphone pictures of his home shows how investigators went in and how the condition they left it. Shae, 20, was read her rights and arrested, but she was released. Ethan Dowdy is a neighbor and a friend of the family. Inman said he decided to buy his marijuana from the streets, he prefers the raw form of his prescribed medicine. He said his preference is driven by his concerns over the use of chemicals to process the marijuana sold in dispensaries. Inman said he's expressed his concerns to the Florida Department of Health before. He said he will fight the charges against him. Christopher Padgett with the Clay County Sheriff's office said Florida's medical marijuana laws are very clear. And according to the office of Medical Marijuana Florida law makes it illegal to buy your prescribed medicine from the streets.
