This week on the pod I talk to Caitlin Brady who built up the strength and courage to leave her abusive and violent relationship with her young baby. Caitlin opens up about her story and how brutal the relationship was and how she had to check herself and her daughter into a Womens shelter. In the last year she has learned to look for help and the power of finding her own inner strength to start over and heal. Caitlin is one of the bravest women I have ever heard speak and how she is navigating herself through her triggers and opening herself up to becoming who and what she wants to be. Someone made you feel so small, They stole your voice away. Made you sorry for being you. Made you feel that the black eyes and purple evidence of pain that mark you, are all your fault. All your fault. You were the one that made them hit you, hurt you, beat you black and blue, they say. They put their virulent-veined faces too close to yours and screamed until spit splashed your face. The late-night tears and heart cries at the doors of rooms you were locked out of, tumbling tears puddled on the porcelain tile, making the floor wet with misery and your multiplied loss of dignity. First, they take away your you-ness, then they strip you of your family and friends, under the umbrella of wanting you all to themselves. But there is escape, there is a way back to beautiful you. to freedom. . . freedom from fear and feeling so low and the soul-shaking knowledge that someone so hateful would hurt you, just for being you. Fly butterfly, fly now. Just as soon as you can. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/thewanderingpaddy. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In Part 2 we try to dig deeper into Dr Shaikh's work. We learn about her neurological models, how she detects potential extremists in society? What goes into the mind of an extremist? How successful are her models? What if it gets into the wrong hands etc. We talk about radicalization in genral, the stages of ISIS's brainwashing mechanism, the deradicalization camp around the world. We also talk about other interesting societal topics like the genesis of our political ideology, our tribal mentality, the science behind victim blaming, and some questions from listeners across the world.Dr Sumaiya Shaikh is an Australian Neuroscientist with a PhD in Medicine (Neurophysiology) from Sydney and currently holds a post-doctoral fellowship in Sweden. She has also conducted teaching for year 1-2 MBBS at Western Sydney University for over 5 years. She has developed a laboratory paradigm to access and differentiate between the propensity to engage in retaliatory vs. appetitive aggression (a quantifiable violent behaviour), the latter closely mimicking violent extremism. She has conducted several interviews with people who have engaged in ideological (e.g. violent extremism) and non-ideological acts of violence to study the ‘bio-psycho-social' basis of appetitive violence- a rewarding-motivational violent behaviour, most commonly observed in terrorists.
Research has shown that stress associated with the disaster leads to higher rates of domestic violence.Social factors that put people more at risk for violence are reduced access to resources, increased stress due to job loss or strained finances, and disconnection from social support systems. With this pandemic, we're seeing similar things happen, which unfortunately leads to circumstances that can foster violence. Before the pandemic, a survivor or victim could flee a violent situation by staying with a family member, going to a shelter or filing a case with the police. For many, such options aren't easily available right now. And this is happening in almost every country of the world. A longitudinal study found that intimate partner violence rates are highest in the poorest neighborhoods. Listen in to the desperate message of the UN secretary General on the issue. This podcast listeners specially get to hear a personal message from Dr. Rajulben L. Desai, Member, National Commission for Women. She had been Principal Law College, Deesa (B.K.) Gujarat and is a prominent educationist and social worker who has worked extensively for the welfare of the Women and Children. She has been awarded the “Shreshtha Mahila Award” on the occasion of International Women's Day in 2018. Dr Desai shared a special whatsapp number on which women in distress can reach out through messaging to seek help from NCW . The number is 7217735372 . We conclude with the words from Dr Geeta Kumar who is a specialist in Women's Issues and has written several research papers on the topic. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/arvindramas/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/arvindramas/support
