The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from the 25th of November to the 10th of December, which is International Human Rights Day. The theme this year is “30 Years of Advancing Collective Action to End Violence Against Women and Children”. This year's campaign emphasises addressing the root causes of GBVF, promoting positive masculinity, promoting gender equity and creating economic opportunities for women and children. Just looking at the numbers, more than 2,500 women and children were killed in the country between April and September this year. So, to discuss GBV in South Africa, and whether or not we're making any progress in our fight against it, Carol Ofori spoke to Interventions Supervisor at TEARS FOUNDATION Kavya Swaminathan.

A mistake you could make when thinking about the crucifixion of Jesus, is to think that Jesus was somehow a victim. But this is far from the case. Even though Judas, Peter, the crowds and disciples all fail him, we see Jesus spectacularly in control and acting to fulfil scripture. However, there's a lesson for us from each of the disciple's actions.UGVuTkrLxoevD30ioskq

We don't have a democracy, we have a kleptocracy that elevates to positions of power those amongst us who are most comfortable with leaning into their inner Dark Triad of Psychopathy, Narcissism and basic low cunning.  Then, when they get there, we're surprised that they go on to wreak havoc with all that we believe to be good and right and beautiful. Doing the same thing time after time is the very definition of insanity - clearly we need a new way of connecting, of communicating, of articulating our needs and wants that give us a sense of connection, agency and sufficiency, that bring out the best of us, not our own inner dark triads. We need a new means of governance that works from the ground up and works for a thriving future for the human and more-than human world. This week's guest is absolutely immersed in the questions of how we transform our governance. More than this, he is immersed in actually making it happen. Alex Lockwood was a Senior Lecturer in Professional and Creative Writing at Sunderland University and he practiced what he taught - because he's also the author of a novel, The Chernobyl Privileges and a non-fiction memoir, The Pig in Thin Air. More recently, he was actively involved in Animal Rebellion, a kindred organisation to Extinction Rebellion and then that evolved into becoming a founder member of The Humanity Project, an astonishing, life-affirming, inspiring collective movement for change. At the times when the news about climactic tipping points and the loss of sulphur particles and the impact of el Nino combines with the horrors of political destruction around the world, it's really good to remember there are highly motivated, highly intelligent people getting together to create visions for change that will work and to which we will all look forward. This podcast rekindled my belief in a future that can work. I hope it does the same for you.Humanity Project https://humanityproject.uk/Hard Art Festival in Manchester "The Fête of Britain" https://hardart.metalabel.com/ha002/Global Assembly https://globalassembly.org/Lee Jasper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_JasperClare Farrell  https://www.dazeddigital.com/life-culture/article/61534/1/extinction-rebellion-xr-co-founder-clare-farrell-prison-hsbc-windows-smashAlex on Twitter https://twitter.com/alexlockwoodAlex on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-lockwood-narrative-leadership/

The African Union (AU) will convene the third Men's Conference on Positive Masculinity, in Pretoria this week, with the aim of advocating for more initiatives and dialogues where young men and boys can discuss issues affecting them. President Cyril Ramaphosa noted in his weekly letter to the nation that Saturday marked the start of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children yearly campaign. He said one of the reasons gender-based violence (GBV) continued in South Africa, was because there was a culture of ambivalence among men who see crimes against women and children as a 'private matter' or a 'family matter'. In most cases of GBV, including domestic abuse and sexual violence, the attacker was known to the victim, he added. South Africa is co-hosting the conference with the AU Chair and President of the Comoros Azali Assoumani. The inaugural conference was held in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2021 and the second one was held in Dakar, Senegal in 2022. Ramaphosa highlighted that it was the country's priority to end GBV. "For the AU, as it is for our own country, ending GBV is a priority. Discussions are currently underway on the content of an African Convention to End Violence Against Women and Girls, executing a decision of the African Union Summit earlier this year," he said. He explained that once adopted, the convention would be the first continental legal instrument for the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls. He said South Africa was part of the AU Circle of Champions. "It is an association of African Heads of State who have committed to implementing programmes at a national and continental levels that promote positive masculinity and encourage more men and boys to be part of the fight against GBV," he explained. Ramaphosa expressed his confidence that the third AU Men's Conference on Positive Masculinity would raise the profile of prevention efforts in South Africa and in wider Africa, and that its outcomes would galvanise men and boys to play a greater role in breaking the cycle of violence. He said government had long maintained that interventions aimed at eradicating GBV in the country must focus on prevention. "If we are to raise a nation of men who are positive role models, who take care of their families, who exhibit positive masculinity and who would not countenance hurting a woman or a girl, we must work with young men," he said. MORE INTERVENTIONS Government has been engaging with civil society, academia and researchers, traditional leaders, youth organisations, the faith community and the private sector on the issue of prevention. He said a number of initiatives were underway across a range of sectors that were providing space for young and older men to discuss notions of masculinity. Men are called on to critically consider their own prejudices, preconceptions and chauvinisms that abet GBV. Ramaphosa noted that a number of government departments had interventions in place that were focused on promoting positive masculinity through dialogues, workshops, awareness-raising campaigns, psychosocial support and behavioural change programmes. "In August this year I was part of the Presidential Young Men and Boys' Indaba in Soweto. I had the opportunity to talk with a group of young men as part of the 'What about the Boys' initiative. The aim of this programme is to get young men to open up in a safe space about their own experiences with masculinity and how this impacts their own attitudes to GBV," he said. He said that citizens needed to inculcate a mindset that saw young men as part of the solution, and not just the problem. "While men are the main perpetrators of violence against women and children, men must also be at the forefront of bringing about a new society that respects the equal rights of women and girls, where GBV has no place," he said.

Jessica's story started in high school with a boyfriend who seemed amazing. He was the class clown, a football player and very into her. In the early years she was able to explain his problematic behavior as expressions of his love for her. There was no physical abuse at first. If she just tried harder his behavior would stop. Then when the violence came it was only when drinking. The alcohol was the problem. If he could only eliminate that, those things wouldn't happen anymore. Then just as her father died, she found out she was pregnant. The physical abuse stopped and the behavior that remained could be explained away with the stresses of having a baby. They got married shortly after and life felt somewhat manageable until the physical abuse began again and brought new levels of daily torment. He monitored her every move. He installed cameras in the house. He had eclipsed every good thing in her life.It wasn't until her 3rd attempt at leaving that she finally got away, but real freedom didn't come until her husband was sent to prison. With him gone she felt things should be better, but the hole inside her remained and with it came a string of destructive relationships until she finally did the internal work necessary to find a stable and healthy relationship.Today, Jessica is an internationally-recognized healthy relationships expert, speaker, trainer, and Certified Professional Coach with more than 2 decades of experience. Yesterday saw the start of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children and the president delivered a speech last night where he made a statement that "Violence against women isn't a women's problem but a men's problem. Darren, Keri and Sky spoke to Dr Sandile Tshabalala who is the HOD for the Department of Health in KZN to learn more about the Department of Health's campaign called 'Ikhosomba lamadoda' formed to create dialogues with men to tackle certain issues, including gender-based violence. Has the Department found these useful? Have men been able to open up about issues such as GBV? These are some of the questions Dr Tshabalala answered in this week's podcast.

As you may have noticed, 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children starts today. We want to take this opportunity to dedicate today's podcast episode to women in Africa. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has set itself the mandate of advancing women rights causes in Sub-Saharan Africa and across the globe. The proportion of women in leading positions in business and politics is alarmingly low. Today we find ourselves in East Africa, more precisely in Moshi, the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. Activist Elizabeth Minde joins host Nangamso Kwinana. Elizabeth is a legal practitioner and an advocate of the high court of Tanzania, as well as managing director of Kilimanjaro Women Information Exchange and Community Organisation or KWIECO. Elizabeth and her organisation provide legal counselling to marginalised women in rural communities. Their vision is for a society that takes responsibility to protect all human rights. The Women's March on January 21st was an amazing experience.  It was such a peaceful demonstration of more than 680,000 people, that the police had nothing to do. Isn't that an astounding report and a model for how the world can be!  It was living proof that that many people can come together to express powerful opinion and voice their demand for change ... with NO VIOLENCE!  I saw a placard on the back of an elderly person using a walker, vitally alive as part of the March.  Her placard declared, "love not hate, makes America great"!  It is appropriate that January 30th is the opening of hte 20th Season for Nonviolence - a 64 day period dedicated to peace and nonviolence that was inauguated by the United Nations and the Association for Global New Thought. There is so much to talk about to make sure, as Rumi said, that we "don't go back to sleep."  Please join us for the call or listen to the recording.

Victims of women abuse believe that 16 Days of No Violence against Women and Children campaign has no effect in the rural villages of the Eastern Cape. This emerged during a recent Imbizo held in Bityi oustside Mthatha organised by various departments. They say abuse cases continue unabated in far flung rural areas. They believe the solution lies in concrete partnership between law enforcement agencies and the communities to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. Our reporter Nkululeko Nyembezi visited the area and filed this report...
