Lou Blasi and Sky Dombroske talk about pitchers with high deltas between their ERA and xFIP, both for the better and the worse, and theorize what that might mean going forward. In this episode, they break down MacKenzie Gore, Max Meyer, Dylan Cease, Jesus Luzardo, Griffen Canning, Kris Bubic, and Corbin Burnes, among others.

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Sean Manaea continues to actively hurt the San Francisco Giants' chances every time he pitches. His latest outing, in which he allowed eight runs (four earned) raised his season numbers to a dreadful 7.96 ERA, 8.00 xERA, 6.62 FIP, and 5.02 xFIP. Ross Stripling hasn't been much better. It's fair to say that the SF Giants' two offseason starting pitcher signings have not worked out so far. Both pitchers have much better track records than this, but this team also has a sense of urgency to win, and these two are not helping. So something needs to be done—now.Manaea and/or Stripling need to move to the bullpen or go on the injured list. There's basically a zero percent chance that either is DFA'd five weeks into their two-year deals. Again, they have track records of being much better than this, but the SF Giants can't afford to keep running them out there in high-leverage situations, and starts count as high-leverage situations. So what can the Giants do? Fortunately, Alex Wood seems just about ready to come off the IL, so he can push one of them out of the rotation. And there are two key names to watch in Triple-A: Kyle Harrison and Keaton Winn. Farhan Zaidi recently described both as "potentially imminent big leaguers," and the time could be coming quickly.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Is Patrick Bailey going to be in the majors in the near future? That remains entirely uncertain, as they San Francisco Giants have several catchers with unique backgrounds and current statuses. Joey Bart appeared to be finally putting it all together before he sustained a minor groin injury, but he's avoided going on the IL. Blake Sabol was striking out a ton and looking like his time on the roster might be running short, but he's had a great last two games, including a stunning walk-off homer two nights ago, and suddenly he looks like he's earned quite a bit more rope.Meanwhile, it was Ricardo Genovés, not Gary Sánchez, who was brought to San Francisco on taxi squad when it was thought that Bart might have to go on the IL. Sánchez can opt out of his minor league deal with the Giants if he's not in the majors by Monday, and it's certainly worth noting that he has struggled in Triple-A so far. And now enter Bailey, who was promoted to Triple-A, where both Genovés and Sánchez are already on the roster. The whole situation is pretty wild and there's no telling what the short-term and long-term future holds. As all of this was going on beneath the surface, the SF Giants won their fifth straight game. Their once "feast or famine" offense has normalized and is consistently putting up around five runs a game, which was to be expected. Simultaneously, their pitchers continue to give up more homers than expected (Tony DeSclafani allowed two more last night), and the Giants' offense continues to lead the league in strikeout rate. Amidst those concerning trends, there are still plenty of reasons for optimism as the Giants have been better than average by wRC+ and fWAR by the position players, and their pitchers are first in an interesting and advanced metric called xFIP, which predicts better pitching (and specifically fewer homers) moving forward.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants have a 4.71 ERA and 4.73 FIP. Much has been made of their offense's inconsistency and tendency to strike out, but overall the Giants have graded out as a significantly above-average offensive team. The run prevention, however, has not been there. The Giants allowed 10 runs in their loss to the Dodgers last night. The good news is that their biggest problem is simply that they've allowed too many homers, seemingly at an unsustainably high level. The SF Giants' team K% and BB% as a pitching staff is strong, but they're last in the majors in HR/FB ratio, which is something that does not stabilize quickly. The Giants' xFIP, which predicts ERA based on normal BABIP and HR/FB, is among the best in MLB, which is encouraging.Darin Ruf is back with the Giants, and he hammered a double off the left-center field wall in his first at-bat, and it came against Clayton Kershaw. The Giants lost Bryce Johnson to a concussion after he slammed into the center field wall making a heroic catch last night. Michael Conforto also exited the game with calf tightness.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Logan Webb got hit around today as the San Francisco Giants continued their early season trend of losing every other game. While that's not exactly what you want to see from a team that finished exactly .500 last year, it's too early to read into such trends. Webb's strikeout rate and walk rate so far this season are very encouraging; he's just been hurt by an unsustainably high average on balls in play and rate of stranding his own baserunners. Those numbers will improve, which should shift his 6.55 ERA down closer to his low-3.00s FIP (and even lower xFIP).Getting to some mailbag questions ... With the Orioles calling up Grayson Rodriguez, do you expect the SF Giants to call up Kyle Harrison and or Casey Schmitt by the end of the month? Will homers make an appearance again this season? Or did we just use up our allowance for another 5 series? Does Ross Stripling have a history of starting slowly? Hoping maybe he's still working out the kinks?Barring any injuries or poor performance of our current roster, when do you think we'd see Schmitt called up and at what position? And finally: What is your "way to early" season review of the San Francisco Giants so far?Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Host Adam Burke stepped back into The Bettor’s Box to spend some time talking about what we’ve seen so far in terms of contact quality and some teams that are off to slow starts and those that are off to good starts. It is important to understand the reasons why and to see if those things are sustainable developments or not. The Down the Lines segment is really important for those that want to get line value and line equity each and every day in the betting markets. Adam recapped the line moves dating back to last Friday and added some context and analysis as to what happened with those games. Along the way, he talked about a few picks for Monday as well. The Sabermetric Stat of the Show was xFIP and then Adam previewed Yankees vs. Blue Jays, Rangers vs. Rays, and Indians vs. White Sox for the week ahead.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners submitted on Twitter. Among the questions asked and answered on this edition of the mailbag: Is Tyler Anderson really worth going to arbitration with? Somewhere around $3.5M for a 4.36 FIP and 5.93 xFIP seems inefficient. Could that money be spent elsewhere for more production? Should the Giants pursue Joc Pederson? With how well the giants outfield played last year, would a left-handed-hitting infielder who could play the outfield like Jurickson Profar be a better fit than Pederson? Any ideas on some viable paths for improving the bullpen? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Reds starters lead the majors in ERA and xFIP, and rank third in WHIP. The bullpen, however, is 29th in ERA and 25th in WHIP. Paul Dehner Jr. and C. Aaron and Sam continue their division preview with the NL West division. But first they give their thoughts on some of the proposed rule changes for the upcoming season and cover their first advanced pitching stats: FIP and xFIP.
Host Adam Burke took listeners through more like a 301 class on betting and evaluating pitchers on today’s edition of The Bettor’s Box. Today’s topic was to look at wOBA-xwOBA, which is a Statcast metric derived from exit velocity and launch angle. This is a metric that does become the catalyst for line movement in the markets and it is something you should definitely know about.Adam tried to navigate a challenging topic by looking at examples of pitchers in line for positive or negative regression, including several names that we’ve heard on past segments regarding ERA, FIP, xFIP, or Cluster Luck. We’re painting a comprehensive picture of handicapping starting pitchers and this is one of the most advanced ways of doing it, but looking at xwOBA and its impact on pitcher numbers and performance.

After taking a look at ERA, FIP, and xFIP regression candidates on Monday, host Adam Burke peeled back another layer of the proverbial onion on Thursday to talk about LOB% and the positive and negative regression candidates with that stat. All of this works together to form the picture of a pitcher to buy or sell for the upcoming season.Adam looked at the top 15 in LOB%, the bottom 15 in LOB%, and then talked about whether or not their numbers are sustainable or if those numbers are likely to move one way or another. Adam highlighted six negative regression guys and six positive regression guys during this segment.

DFSR’s Doug Norrie and James Davis take to the podcast breaking down two slates of Wednesday MLB action. They start with the early slate talking some of the bigger arms like Trevor Bauer and Tyler Glasnow. There’s also a game in Coors to deal with considering the Rockies are throwing Jeff Hoffman and the Braves have a high run line once again. Then on the evening slate they look at Noah Syndergaard coming off a rough outing and whether Nick Pivetta can ever have his ERA catch his xFIP. And of course they have to talk about FanDuel putting Chris Davis at $500. All of this and more on a full MLB podcast for FanDuel and DraftKings. Learn more about your ad choices. We recorded another episode! This week we were joined by Twitter's Isaac Things (@isaacthings) to discuss Bryce Harper winning the Home Run Derby, Josh Hader's bigoted tweets that surfaced during the All Star Game, the All Star Game itself, and Isaac provides a run down on why all Dusty Baker haters (Haders?) are racist. With most of the episode taken up by what would've been the Kevin's Korner topic, we instead take a quick dip in Chris' Cove to end the podcast, which somehow gets to LaVar Ball. You'll just have to listen to figure out why.
Al Melchior and Matt Modica discuss the latest MLB news and notes including the latest Manny Machado trade rumors and Yasiel Puig landing on the DL. Next, they talk xFIP over/under performers and Monday standouts. #FNTSYradio #FNTSY #Fantasybaseball #MLB #MannyMachado Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
We're back and better than ever with the May 21 edition of The Bettor's Box. BangTheBook.com's outstanding MLB betting podcast hosted by Adam Burke can be heard every Monday and Thursday. Today, Adam opened up the show with your listener questions during the Monday Mailbag segment, which included thoughts on xFIP, betting odds, and minimizing variance. Adam followed that up by going Beyond the Box Score to discuss the recent spat about xwOBA, talked some more about xFIP, and then recapped Indians vs. Astros, Athletics vs. Blue Jays, Diamondbacks vs. Mets, and Tigers vs. Mariners. The Down the Lines segment featured some thoughts on line moves that happened over the weekend and Adam also gave out his favorite pick for Monday night. Defensive Runs Saved was today's sabermetric stat and we finished things up with a preview of a few series starting up early this week.
The DFSR crew is back to discuss a split slate of Wednesday MLB action on FanDuel and DraftKings. There are a number of ace-level arms going today with Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander on the early slate and Clayton Kershaw going in the evening. The guys also look at Jake Arrieta and discuss whether Jon Gray is viable even in Coors. On the offensive side of things, Seattle looks like they are in a good spot again Big Game James Shields in the afternoon. Shields has more walks than strikeouts this season. Meanwhile, in the evening the Dodgers square up against Trevor Richards who’s had struggles of his own this season. He’s sporting a 5.71 xFIP and is walking everyone in sight. All of this and much more on a full Wednesday podcast for FanDuel and DraftKings. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Instead of a Tuesday Takeover edition of BangTheBook Radio this week, host Adam Burke made up for the Monday edition of The Bettor's Box that he missed with a special Tuesday edition. The show started with a quick recap of the three ballparks that Adam visited during his recent vacation, with stops at Busch Stadium, Kauffman Stadium, and Coors Field. After that, he took a look at some of the league's biggest outliers per Pythagorean Win-Loss, BaseRuns, and Third Order Win Percentage, which are three alternate standings metrics. He talked about different ways to handicap with some of the value gone from using ERA and xFIP. With a pick for Tuesday night and some great insight into a listener question about first inning betting, this was another shining example of why this show stands out above the rest.
Episode 400 Dave Studeman is manager of The Hardball Times and the actual, real inventor of xFIP. He’s also the guest on this edition of FanGraphs Audio, during which he promotes the newly released Hardball Times Annual entirely sans compunction.
