Stargazing: A Big D Puckcast | Defending Big D

Some of us just like to enjoy a beverage and watch a Dallas Stars game – and that's just fine. But others want to understand how players affect the game and the team around them...and that's where math comes in. For this edition of Stargazing, D Magazine's David Castillo – who's also a longtime DBD contributor – sat down with Wes Lawrence to take the fear out of #fancystats. In this episode, they discuss: how stats like Corsi and Wins Above Replacement affect a team's makeup, what coaches may see in that player you hate (or love), why analysis and intuition can, and should, work hand in hand, and what's on the horizon for the quant crowd. Ready to revisit the Honka Wars? Oh yes...we went there. Leave your thoughts here, or DM us on the '90s-era default font app @WesALawrence or @KETibbetts. Let's talk about it! And please don't forget to share. Tell your friends about us, and give us a rate or review wherever you listen. We appreciate it more than we can say.

4-9-2022 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by expressing his shock over the tragic death of Pittsburgh Steelers and Former Ohio State Quarterback Dwayne Haskins. He then blasts CBS Sports and their fantasy baseball “experts” over his most recent fantasy baseball draft. He wonders how an outfield of Juan Soto, Mike Trout, and Kyle Schwarber ranks 10th out of 10 teams and what particularly is wrong with choices of Jose Abreu (6th round), Javier Baez (9th), Corey Seager (4), Kris Bryant (5), and Joey Votto (8)… all when the team featured keepers Shohei Ohtani (10) and Wander Franco (12). John will take that instead of Guru suggestions of Brandon Belt and Ke'Bryan Hayes. John then spends some time talking about the 1962 National League MVP vote, one that ultimately went to Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Maury Wills. John talks a little about Wins Above Replacement, something nobody in 1962 knew anything about, and why Willie Mays would have won the award unanimously had the vote been done today. John then makes his case for the late Tommy Davis before explaining why Frank Robinson really should have won the award. John then talks about Burt Shotton's connection to Branch Rickey and their ties to the St. Louis Cardinals. John then talks about longtime sportswriter Dick Young's impact on the sports beat and media

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses San Francisco Giants legend Barry Bonds falling off the Hall of Fame ballot after being rejected for a 10th and final time by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Bonds received 66% of the vote, far short of the 75% threshold needed to get in. David Ortiz, in his first year on the ballot, was elected to the Hall of Fame. Ortiz reportedly tested positive for PED's in 2003, but that apparently didn't matter to some of the writers who felt the need to keep Bonds, a far superior player to Ortiz, out of the Hall.Ben discusses how the Hall of Fame has left him feeling jaded after all these years, and his overwhelming feeling is one of not caring anymore, as opposed to being enraged. He talks about how Bonds has the second-most fWAR of all time, behind Babe Ruth, and Ortiz is over 100 fWAR behind him. Ben would've voted for Ortiz, but Bonds is arguably the best baseball player ever. As former FanGraphs writer Jeff Sullivan noted on Twitter, the difference between Bonds' fWAR and Ortiz's fWAR is Alex Rodriguez. That just about says it all. Finally, Ben discusses more details about the MLB lockout. The MLBPA and the league met on Monday and Tuesday in New York, and Ben has more details about those meetings. The league reportedly agreed to the players' proposal of a bonus pool for pre-arbitration players, although they remain far apart on the amount of the pool. The league proposed $10 million after the players asked for more than $100 million. But Ben sees a big flaw with the idea: both sides have proposed basing it on Wins Above Replacement, or WAR, which is not a clear-cut metric like average, OBP, or slugging percentage. Different sites use different calculations, and their formulas are regularly tweaked. There are many issues with using WAR, but on the whole, it's a good thing that both sides agree that pre-arb players should be eligible to earn more money based on performance.Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms

While Patrick dips his toe into the MLB Free Agency pool to get a feel of how things are going, the New York Mets have done a cannonball. The New York Mets have gone out and completely revamped their entire outfield. With the Mets shaking up the entire world of MLB baseball, Patrick looks at how the Met's new additions affect the rest of the FA market. Following that the FA market and league updates Patrick talks about the All-MLB Award-LESS team. One of the players who did not receive the recognition that they deserved was Jose Ramierez who led all MLB third basemen in Runs Created and Wins Above Replacement. To end today's show Patrick talks about some of the contractors that changed the MLV into this new era of "megadeals", like the one Carlos Correa is seeking. 0:00-7:25: Matthew drops a fire intro before teeing up his guest, Lookout Landing staffer Grant Bronsdon. The fellas are joined together, separately, to draft teams of Glue Guys. This is essentially the direct opposite of the last draft they did, in which they tried to create the best possible teams in Mariner history out of individual players’ seasons. For this one, the only players who are eligible are ones who were not very good. If you were worth 3.0 Wins Above Replacement, sorry, you’re disqualified. This draft was inspired by Matthew’s world-changing article from last week. 7:30-29:55: With the first pick, Matthew perhaps falls victim to recency bias. Grant responds by taking someone from the 2001 team, but probably not who you think! After Matthew makes his second pick, a quick Internet search reveals a hilarious story about him. After a defensive specialist and a superstar on the come up get picked, Grant grabs the first pitcher and Matthew takes a cartoonish slugger. 30:00-39:40: Grant responds with a glue guy slugger of his own, who is also one of the best players in franchise history, because Mariners. This leads to a world of discovery at the next pick, when a Mariner legend from the early days is snatched up, causing two people who were not born at the time of his playing career to find out that he was a…free spirit. Then, a wild relief pitcher appears! 39:45-59:20: Matthew intentionally makes things harder on Grant by drafting a guy at his second position so Grant can have him at his first. We also accidentally go out of order because neither of our brains work anymore. The next bullpen pick sparks a conversation about relievers who received MVP votes, and then. 59:25-1:14:50: Grant takes to the skies for his final pick while Matthew identifies the keys to the game. Then, we go over some honorable mentions and recap our selections before disappearing into our quarantine caves again. Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2020 43:09

Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp VP of content and engaged learning with workinsports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast…August 16th 1954Sports Illustrated the magazine launches. In their first issue their most high profile article is titled “The Golden Age is Now”“FOR WORLD-WIDE INTEREST, FOR WIDESPREAD PARTICIPATION, FOR SHATTERED RECORDS, FOR THRILLING TRIUMPHS OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT, THIS IS THE GREATEST SPORTS ERA IN HISTORY”The imagery with the article is of a golfer, head down putting, but the photography isn't strong enough to tell if it is someone famous. There is a gallery, maybe 30 people, and there is a man in a pink suit is standing just off the green but separate from the crowd...likely the Jim Nantz of the time. I'm not a huge nostalgia guy, but I found myself drawn to the article. I needed to know why they claimed this was the golden era -- what stood out to them in this time to say “the time for sports is now!”Reading further there were some interesting data points shared -- not exactly Wins Above Replacement type data...but interesting for perspective sake. Get this… in their argument for it being the golden era of sports they cite:Tens of thousands of pin boys are kept leaping by 20 million bowlers and, quite properly, the 60,000 bowling alleys around the country include one in the basement of the White House. The favorite outdoor sport is fishing. Last year 17,652,478 citizens took out fishing licenses and eight million more fished where licenses either were not needed (along the coasts) or were not likely to be asked for. Hunting licenses totaled 14,832,779.Three million Americans go skiing every winter, A half-million own sailboats, There are five million golfers There is softball to be played (the Amateur Softball Association of America claims a million players) and basketball is a year-round sport and topic No. 1 in thousands of U.S. towns. There are horseshoes to be pitched in a million back yards and croquet balls to be tapped by belligerent believers who insist that it is the only worth-while game in the world.Isn't this amazing?70 years ago the sports world was afire with horseshoes and bowling! No wonder your grandparents are scared to death of twitter, their golden era was spent fishing. It's not exactly groundbreaking to share that the world has changed. It's not exactly revolutionary to say social media, streaming, a dedicated sports channel for just about everything, famous athletes being accessible and sharing their own story -- has changed our relationship with sports. But the job of keeping up with all of this sure has changed.  Bob Ryan the quintessential sports writer, formerly of the Boston Globe and one of my personal idols, tells how when he covered the Celtics in the 1970's he was embedded with the team, went out for drinks with them, knew their wives...and had to maybe write 3-5 stories a week. Now, content is different, the audience's appetite is insatiable. There is social, there are broadcast hits, there is constant analysis and debate, there are writing demands… and then, there is everything around the corner... Are we developing virtual reality? Do we need to make content specific for Alexa? Should we launch a podcast? Everything needs a strategy and vision - or in this content world - there is chaos. There is no reactionary process -- everything has to be proactive. Which makes the job done by today's guest all the more impressive. Sloane Kelley is the United States Tennis Associations Managing Director of Content and Creative Services … and prior to that she was the VP of Content with the PGA Tour. She knows how to stand out in today's golden era of sports, which is a little different than the one in the 50's. Here's Sloane Kelley… Questions for Sloane Kelley, USTA Managing  Director of Content and Creative Services1: Let's get into your background a bit before we get into your career in sports content creation and management.

He received a record seven NL MVP awards, eight Gold Glove awards, a record 12 Silver Slugger awards, and 14 All-Star selections. He is considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time.Bonds was regarded as an exceptional hitter: he led MLB in on-base plus slugging six times, and placed within the top five hitters in 12 of his 17 qualifying seasons. He holds many MLB hitting records, including most career home runs (762), most home runs in a single season (73, set in 2001) and most career walks.Bonds was also known as a talented all-around baseball player. He won eight Gold Glove awards for his defensive play in the outfield. He stole 514 bases with his base-running speed, becoming the first and only MLB player to date with at least 500 home runs and 500 stolen bases (no other player has even 400 of each). He is ranked second in career Wins Above Replacement among all major league position players by both Fangraphs and Baseball-Reference.com, behind only Babe Ruth. However, Bonds led a controversial career, notably as a central figure in baseball's steroids scandal. In 2007, he was indicted on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to the grand jury during the federal government's investigation of BALCO. The perjury charges against Bonds were dropped and an initial obstruction of justice conviction[15] was overturned in 2015.[16]Bonds became eligible for the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013; he has not been elected, with his highest share of the vote coming in 2019, his seventh of ten years of eligibility, when he received 59.1%.

Volume 5 - In Part 1 of our Analytics Series, Dave Sanders (@DSanders877) and Drew Ferraro (@DrewFerraro88) chat with Matt Winkelman (@Matt_Winkelman) about how sports organizations have adopted analytics. In most discussions about analytics, you'll find that those with the most extreme points of view (pro and anti) often have the loudest opinions, but we set out to have a more nuanced conversation that bridges the gap between both sides. (1:30-2:32) Why are traditionally kept stats, such as batting average in baseball, more accepted than newer stats, like Wins Above Replacement? (2:33-4:51) Is the pattern matching used in developing "gut feelings" actually similar to what large analytical models are doing? (4:52-5:38) How the interpretation of data is just as important as how it's gathered. (5:39-6:17) Analytics in MLB, specifically how the Phillies have shifted their focus towards analytical thinking in recent years. (6:18-7:23) Difficulty in testing data models. (7:24-7:57) Have analytics influenced the types of players that the Phillies have drafted or targeted in free agency? (7:58-8:48) With one of the worst defenses in the majors in 2018, did a recent change towards heavily utilizing defensive shifts backfire? (8:49-10:09) Does job security play a role in the willingness to adopt a mindset backed by analytics that may be unconventional to most? Is this impacted by the length of time the organization has been gathering data and building models? Thanks again to Matt for joining us! Rob Deer (September 29, 1960) is a former American baseball player who was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 4th round of the 1978 amateur draft.Deer is famous for hitting the game-tying home run on Easter Sunday in 1987, to give the Milwaukee Brewers their 12th straight win to start the season. The home run was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He shares the dubious honor of having the lowest official batting average while still qualifying for the batting title when he batted .179 in 1991. He is the only player since 1910 to have a batting average less than .220 in at least 400 at-bats in at least four seasons.Deer held the American League record for strikeouts in a season (186 strikeouts in 1987) until being passed by Jack Cust in 2008, and had at least 140 strikeouts on seven occasions. Deer averaged a strikeout every 2.75 at-bats.Deer has also gained some notoriety among studiers of baseball statistics due to his propensity for the Three True Outcomes (defined as a strikeout, home run, or bases on balls). Because of his ability to hit home runs and take walks and better-than-average fielding ability, he remained a valuable player despite his inability to hit for average, as evidenced by his career 13.7 Wins Above Replacement.Since his playing days, Deer has had a career in drag racing, sprint car racing and has served as a roving hitting instructor for the San Diego Padres minor league system and is currently the owner of Viz-U-Bat. On November 26, 2012, Deer was named the assistant hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs, under his friend Dale Sveum, manager of the Cubs. They were Milwaukee Brewers teammates from 1986–1990. He is also very close friends with former Brewers teammates Chris Bosio (the Cubs pitching coach) and Robin Yount. While with the Brewers, he worked for his father's construction firm.
