Maybe you were on the playground….OR hanging out with your cousins….playing video games…playing street kick ball…or just plain kicking it with your friends, and they would spew something hurtful. Whatever names or words that punk used in an attempt to offend or insult you – those words just ricocheted straight off and stick to the name caller themselves – indicating that he or she is actually indicative of the connotation he or she originally imparted on you. You were immune - or at least you felt it! While insults may look a little differently today, as an adult, why have we lost that sense of immunity?  In this week’s episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down with IFBB Bikini Pro and Coach Jessica Dolias. As a certified holistic nutritionist, Jessica shares insight on how holistic nutrition has helped her own mindset and relationship with food and how she passes this insight on to her own clients. Jessica stresses the importance of eating foods that make you feel whole, both mentally and physically, instead of cutting things out of your diet. As Jessica shares how her interest in holistic nutrition began, she dives into her past with disordered eating. She talks about how the numbers she constantly chased (the scale, the macros, the calories) had negative effects on her body image and her eating style. Jessica explains about the moment she recognized that something had to change in her current lifestyle as she noticed the lifelessness in her own reflection. Jessica proudly discusses how she worked through her recovery by herself and how her mentality made a shift from focusing on eating as little as possible to instead focusing on eating healthy. Although this shift has been made, Jessica talks about how it wasn’t an instant shift. She talks about how although she has been recovered for 10 years, she still finds herself dealing with disorder thinking and shares some of her best advice to competitors who may be going through what she has in the past. As the episode progresses, Jessica talks about her career and her education. When she lost her job due to her company shutting down, Jessica decided to seize the opportunity to start her own business so she would be able to pursue her dream, training clients and becoming a coach for Bombshell Fitness. She shares how her background in dance has aided her to becoming a posing queen, with one judge giving her the feedback that when she is on stage posing, she “lights up the room”. Like many of us, Jessica has had to make adaptation in the recent months due to quarantine. She shares how her unorthodox gym has helped create a new passion and drive for the sport. While she’s squatting with tree trunks she recognized that the quarantine only reinforced her passion because although the circumstances have changed, the excitement for the sport has only grown. Finally, Jessica shares her own journey to the stage. As she fought her way to the top through 10 shows, three of which were national levels, she shares how important it was for her journey to get a “less than optimal” placing. Her 16th place at her first national show made her realize how badly she wanted to push harder to earn her pro card. She also talks about how important it was for her own journey to be involved in the industry outside of her own training and coaching. She talks about the passion she has developed for the sport in things such as working with the tanning company and expediting the stage. She shares how important it was for her to take her competing career to the next level by working behind the scenes. In this insightful and powerful episode, Jessica reinforces the importance of building a life that competing fits into and visualizing your way to success. Choosing foods based on what she likes and what will help her build the physique she wants [13:20] Recognizing the Goal Value of the Food (i.e. enjoying a part of life that isn’t focused on how it’s going to help you change) [14:14] when she realized she had “come out the other side” of the eating disorder It wasn’t instant, it took years to get to a point to where those thoughts don’t creep in and they still do try to creep in, 10 years later. It took YEARS to get to the point where she was feeling good about her eating choices. First ~3 years it was a constant battle, recovering from that on your own is so difficult You HAVE TO give yourself grace Don’t know of anyone that has recovered and has been able to instantly change their mindset about it. You have to be able to have a rational conversation with your thoughts about what you really want This is a daily, hourly, by the minute decision to change. [17:09] full recovery is possible but you have to be prepared to handle these thoughts and give yourself grace [17:43] Importance for competitors to be mindful with their relationship with food Competing is so regimented that negative relationships can creep back in There is a fine line between having a good relationship with food and competing, you have to be able to disconnect yourself from the regimen and not let it control your life YOU ARE CHOOSING TO DO THIS AND YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER IT, IT DOESN’T HAVE CONTROL OVER YOU Once you can learn what you need and are able to communicate it with your coach you’ll be able to choose your relationship with food is [20:49] reinforcing healthy behaviors and thought patterns Learning from experience, how to eat well, fuel yourself well, looking at your fitness as an overall picture as opposed to just the eating or just the training What you fuel yourself impacts everything, your emotion, your decision making, your energy You are free to be fit and free to be healthy. [23:21] don’t forget about the passion, love, fulfillment and lessons that comes with competing [23:35] being mentally prepared to commit to competing Girls have to already have a decent relationship with food, yo-yo dieters or those fresh out of an eating disorder are likely not ready for an eating disorder. Not about pushing people to the stage if they’re not ready for it. If you’re not read for it, it can be so discouraging. Best factors: You enjoy training, you are an athlete, you like competition, not seeing competing as a diet or to reach a certain weight [26:31] the journey to becoming a coach Bombshell fitness coach Started competing in 2015 doing her own prep, was inspired by the bombshell athletes. Started as an athlete after her first show, it’s a powerful sisterhood that takes an individual sport and turns it into a team thing. Visualize herself being a bombshell coach. Lost her job when company closed in 2016 so she ended up opening her own computer programming business to help pay the bills while she was starting her own personal training business, what she was doing when she turned pro Dream to turn pro and dream to work for bombshell BECAME A PRO July 2017 Started working with bombshell as a posing coach, then asked her to be a coach [31:42] Her own computer programming business Certified programmer, is a service provider for her business, program “smart home” systems and design graphics for it [33:03] degree from FIT (fashion institute technology) Moved to manhattan to earn the degree, wanted to be a professional dancer, injured herself in high school and it helped her see things she enjoyed beyond dance [35:00] does the background of dance help with bodybuilding 1000%, reason for starting competing was because she missed being on stage, when she got into weight training she was able to combine her love for the stage with the love for weight training Dance background helped a lot with posing, it’s a forte of hers because it comes naturally with her dance history. [36:59] Feedback from judges Been told her posing is great and when she’s on stage posing she “lights up the room” with it. Been working on building up legs, has built her glutes up way too much and her glutes overpower her legs and shoulders (upper body width) [38:40] one exercise for shoulders, glutes and hamstrings Shoulders: lateral raises Hamstrings: sumo deadlifts Glutes: reverse lunges, but if she was doing heavy glute training, she would pick hip thrusts [40:21] changing her diet/training to evolve with the bikini division Focuses on going heavier “old school” training for heavy compound lifts, i.e. squats, deadlifts, presses Higher reps, heavy weight Eating a lot, more food volume Everyone should have a different approach because all of our bodies are different [43:44] Prep under lockdown No access to gym, hasn’t been in five months ☹ This has been her best/favorite prep yet Training at home has allowed her to focus more Unorthodox gym Bench, dumbbell, squat racks, husband cut down some trees and she is literally squatting with tree trunks, a pulley system made with cinder blocks Reinforced her passion for the sport because she feels able to still prep for the sow under these unknown circumstances, this was a “blessing in disguise” for her competitive journey [47:57] maintaining a commitment to the sport for 5 years without wavering Loves it that much Sees her own athletes go through ups and downs, You have to power through it and it takes years to get there, before you hit your “normal”. You have to be patient with yourself because you are completely changing your lifestyle and your mind doesn’t change overnight. [51:30] Journey to IFBB pro 10 shows, 3 national shows [51:45] most memorable part of journey to IFBB pro Got 16th place in her first national show, it made her realize how much she wanted to push and had to work harder to earn that spot Developed a new approach, mindset going into next year (2017) Got overall in two prestigious NPC shows and rode that high into NPC Universe Everything felt “right”, it felt like her time [53:48] experience of winning the overall at NPC Universe Most overwhelming feeling of chills/butterflies, thinks she cried but isn’t sure When having a bad day she visualizes that experience and brings herself back there Surpassed what she dreamed of happening [55:29] “Leveling Up”, what her new goal/accomplishment is Placing at a pro show, earn points Make it to Olympia (I don’t care how long it takes I want to make it happen) [56:23] support of her husband in competing [57:20] using shows as a reason to travel together [58:20] Pets and easing into the farm life Importance of Food Relationship Making Dreams Reality Ways to get Involved in the Industry [59:37] and the impact in the experience as a competitor and coach Work with tanning company, expedite the stage, takes it to the next level to be behind the scenes as well as on the stage [1:01:34] Best advice for one who isn’t competing but thinking about it and road to pro Never competed: look into getting a coach who is involved in the industry and understands it. They’ll help you prep better and if they understand the industry they’ll know what the industry is looking for Looking to go pro: keep going, if it means that much to you, do not give up, don’t live or die by the win of each show.

The reason I don’t trip anymore: Love has to be inside in order for it to come out. It’s like giving away oranges your never had! YOU CANT SHOW LOVE BECAUSE U HAVE NONE FOR YOURSELF. You don’t love yourself. Self loves allow u to give and accept, and until u find yourself as less of a threat u won’t ever love. (Speaker: Wayne Dyer) The reasons u do more for people and NOBODY ASK IF U NEED ANYTHING because love doesn’t seek validation either. My character is so strong and at times I feel so used but I have so much love to give people think I’m drowning and I’m SWIMMING ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I’m happy so I don’t feel the negative emotions I was raised in anymore. I’m cheerful! Loving myself has caused me to care more for others , help anyone along my path, forgive the unwilling, care more for my diet and eating care more for my mental health and my relationships with my peers. Now love is one of the biggest issues with humans. The reason u speak to hateful, the reasons and excuses to not be shit. Stating rich people make u jealous because they actually put money where is needed. The lack of ambition to do more, the lack of caring about a space you take Up daily to keep it clean

This is for those of you who didn't peak in high school. Or college. And in your thirties, you still thought you had more to do, give, and learn. But you were still discovering new potential in your forties, too. You're just not done yet! Before this conversation with psychotherapist, Dr. Dana Dorfman, Amy had never considered the massive parallels between her teen kids' phase of life and her own. Hormonal upheaval, evolving relationships with our own parents, and newfound freedoms weirdly unite some teens' experiences with those of their 50-something mothers.  While Amy interprets this similarity between teens and mid-lifers as permission to make more inappropriate jokes, Dana chooses a different path to reinvention.  Find out why "mid-life" is such a fork in the road, and how to decide which way to go. Dana offers three useful strategies to approach this sometimes-complex time of life, derived from her extensive experience as a clinician. Also, get surprising (and happy!) news about what often happens to relationships that may have been "stuck" for decades as we hit these new thresholds of development.  For our "NO! You HAVE To!" segment, Dana recommends something deeply life-changing, and Amy recommends something shallowly life-changing.  Thanks to Colin Shmaeling for fabulous editing!

Amy gets embarrassed that she doesn't feel as much shame as she used to anymore. We discuss these difference between shame, embarrassment, and guilt, and how (and why!) to avoid a parenting style based on shaming.  Additionally, we marvel at the shamelessness of the current resident of the Oval Office and wonder how someone becomes utterly shameless. Amy was surprised by Dana's expert opinion of how people turn out that way, and you might be, too.  For our "No, You HAVE To" this week, Dana recommends a recent documentary series to understand how deep shame plays out in real life, and Amy recommends something superficial to forget all about it.

Let's be real: we don't want our kids to be either victims or perpetrators of sexual harassment or assault. But is there a conversation we can have with them to keep them safer? Dr. Dana Dorfman uses her professional expertise and experience as mother to both a daughter and a son to help us navigate this potentially thorny topic. And Amy brings several difficult personal and parenting experiences to the couch to illustrate the murkiness of dealing with other people in the real world, which sometimes feels more complicated than just saying "no," even if you're a strong, confident woman. We touch on the impacts of porn, what boys are taught about "masculinity," and how raising girls to always be accommodating to others might have unforeseen costs. After bringing up all that messy stuff, we won't just leave you hanging! Listen to the end for three useful strategies for raising more emotionally attuned kids. Lastly, listen for our "No, You Have To!" recommendations to hear about Amy's weird new life-changing piece of furniture, and a book that validates Dana's parenting values. Please let us know what you think, especially if you try any of these strategies with your own kids. And please rate us, review us, subscribe to us, and share us! Thanks!

The name "Amber Joliat " and "Misfit Studio" seemed to surface overnight just a couple of years ago and since then, it's been producing a consistently concise yet compelling response: "She is amazing!" and "You HAVE TO try her classes!" I have to admit, first, I wasn't convinced. Who is Amber that Toronto seems to be so obsessed with? What is so magical about her classes that everyone keeps talking about? What does it mean to mix dance, yoga and pilates (how can it even be a thing)? My curiosity led me to Mr. Google and eventually to pages of articles written about Amber and the Misfit Studio she founded back in 2010.After reading many interviews and write-ups, I became more intrigued and funny yet, more skeptical. How can a woman so amusing and enchanting exist in the real world? Until... I finally got the chance to meet Amber in person at a panel discussion hosted by KOTN earlier this year. Amber's soft-spoken, well-articulated, fruitful words can really melt your heart and re-awaken your soul. Not kidding! She has this magical and magnetic energy and vibrancy that makes you wonder: Is she real? Or maybe she is an earth angel? So, the rumor WAS right! The obsession now makes total sense.Sitting on the couch with Amber in her equally magical home, she shares her childhood memories of being in love with dancing and drawing; talks about the art of language; and how to live and work with a more spiritual, purposeful perspective. She calls it: Practise the art of presence.Music: Friday Morning by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100224Artist: http://incompetech.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Our exercise series continues as we highlight the benefits of Pilates with PDX powerhouse, Abby Parker! Settle in as she shares her story of strength and resiliency, culminating into a love for fitness. Before we jump into the show I want to make sure to remind those of you in the Portland area to come out and see me at Athleta in the Pearl District! I am doing an awesome workshop event there to help you embrace the power of your mind for fitness. It is February 17th at 8:30 AM and you can click this link to RSVP on Eventbrite. Abby is here today helping us continue our exercise series to expose us to the amazing variety of options we all have for moving our bodies every day. It’s all about finding something we LOVE to do, something that feels good and feels right to our bodies. Abby is here to help us understand a little more about pilates and to help us see the true beauty in this exercise. You HAVE TO head over to Abby’s Instagram and check out her photos. They are incredibly inspirational...you can’t help but feel motivated to get moving and find commitment to daily movement when you see her beauty! Abby's Road to Fitness Abby’s fitness journey is truly amazing. She is a New Jersey girl and reflects back on her mother enrolling her in dance lessons at the age of 13. Ballet quickly became all consuming for her. She would stretch and practice daily, head in to New York every weekend to compete and be exposed to other dancers, and at 17, decided she wanted to pursue dance professionally. After many terribly critical dance auditions for professional companies, she was finally accepted to the American Repertory Ballet out of Princeton, New Jersey. Though she loved dancing full time, she quickly learned the harsh realities of the profession when all the female dancers were lined up in front of the mirror and told to pick out everything that was wrong with themselves and to dedicate themselves to “slimming down.” Abby is 5 foot 8 inches tall and only weight 118 pounds but was told to lose 15 or 20. She went to extreme dieting and cut herself down to 108 pounds in 3 months. But her energy levels showed the damage and she ended up in the hospital after collapsing in a rehearsal. She was told she had to begin eating again and as a result, ate excessive amounts of food but would feel extreme guilt and throw it all up. These two years with the company were full of big changes for Abby, but in 2015, at 20 years old, she discovered Moxie Contemporary Ballet whose tagline stated, “We support healthy bodies in dance.” She packed up everything she could fit in a suitcase and flew to Portland, Oregon to practice with this company while staying in a dorm room on the campus of Portland State University for 4 weeks. At the end of that period, it was time for the director to select 7 out of the 100 dancers to stay with the company. Little did the dancers know, the funding fell through and the director chained up the doors to rehearsal and fled the state. So Abby began frantically searching for a job, staying on the couch of a friend, and doing everything she could to make herself marketable. She finally got a job in a call center in downtown Portland and was less than thrilled about the work she was doing. But Abby didn’t give up on her passion. She still worked out every single day, did deep research into dance opportunities in the Northwest, and she wouldn’t let her dream die. She even joined PDX Contemporary Ballet part-time to continue dancing while working. In March of 2016, her mentor and superior at her job was murdered and the call center was shut down and she was out of a job once again. She knew with her dancer mentality to be her best, that she had always loved fitness. So she was faced with a blank page on her computer and typed in, “What are the top 10 fitness gyms in Portland, Oregon.” And she clicked on one of the middle results...Firebrand Sports. She sent them a shot in the dark email letting them know she was great at answering phones, doing clerical duties, and that she really needed a job. She got a response that they didn’t need anyone answering phones...but they did need an instructor for Barre. Abby was completely caught off guard. She wasn’t even sure exactly what Barre was. She met Sarah, the owner of Firebrand Sports and they immediately connected. She auditioned, was hired, and became a certified Barre instructor. As she was doing that, she walked past another room at Firebrand, saw the Megaformers, and desperately wanted to know what that was and how she could do it. After trying a class, she immediately LOVED it and went down to California to become certified in Lagree. Back in Portland, Abby started teaching more and more while supplementing with other jobs and finally, Sarah thought she should become more involved with the runnings of the business. Throughout this process, she met her best friend Katie, who encouraged her to push herself to her full potential. They began working out a 6 AM together and became fast friends. Abby is continuing her career in fitness and is proud to see a bright future ahead of her despite the setbacks in her past. Abby’s story is a fantastic example of what it takes to make a true lifestyle change...support from the 4 cornerstones of fitness: Daily Movement Good Nutrition The Power of the Mind Community Connection Abby’s story is a beautiful example of the amazing change that can happen when these 4 things come together. It shows us the importance of releasing our obsessions with body shape and embracing body appreciation, health, and wellness into our lives. Fitness helped Abby get through some of the most difficult part of her life in a positive light. So what is Pilates exactly and what can a first-timer expect from giving it a try as a new way of moving their body? Abby explains that the Lagree Fitness Method is what Firebrand specializes in, which is a form of Pilates. You are using a total body fitness machine, or Megaformer, to enhance your movements and exercises. Lagree is a high intensity workout with low intensity on the joints. You can move all parts of your body in just 45 minutes. The beautiful thing about using a Megaformer is that you can modify any workout for more or less intensity. So regardless of your ability or experience level, you are able to feel fantastic. For those of us who have never experienced Pilates or Lagree before, Abby gives us a little insight into what the Megaformer machine is actually like. At the basics, it sort of looks like a bed with many springs and many different things to grab on to and adjust. You are always either pushing or pulling at all times and YOU control the springs of resistance on your machine. There are over 500 different moves that you can do on a Megaformer which gives both the instructors and the students loads of creative expression and flexibility in their workouts. “You have the ability to create a whole beautiful symphony of movements in your workout.” The resistance and intensity of the workout helps to target all those tiny little muscles that are difficult or impossible to reach with other workout methods. Abby says it isn’t just fantastic for strengthening your physical body, but also for strengthening your mind. These workouts challenge you in new and innovative ways and leave you feeling fantastic at the end. For both veteran and new Fitlandians, Christa focuses intensely on the power of the mind with Mind Zoning. You can work to create new neural pathways and thought patterns to change what we believe we can do and to build on our health and wellness simply with our subconscious mind. Pilates is great not only for your physical fitness but your mental fitness as well. Still not sure if Pilates of Lagree Fitness is a good fit for you? Abby offers a complementary class called Lunge and Learn to help you learn modifications, get started slowly, and learn more about the exercises in general before you drop in on a full class...so be sure to check that out! Also, if you are in the Portland area, be sure to check out a Lagree Fitness class in person at Firebrand Sports! Abby’s last minute tips for getting started: Just GO for it! (Starting is the hardest part!) Try a workshop to get started and feel comfortable Grab a friend for support and motivation Stay inspired and push your boundaries!
