Disordered eating can often go undiagnosed due to its complex nature. Mindfulness can significantly improve self-esteem and body image. The body positivity movement has both positive and negative implications. It's essential to focus on health and longevity rather than just aesthetics. Self-love should not lead to self-destructive behaviors. A balanced approach to nutrition is key for long-term health. Understanding food relationships is crucial for emotional well-being. The cycle of restriction and bingeing can be interrupted by trust in oneself. The power of choice allows for healthier eating habits without guilt. Diet breaks can provide mental relief and improve long-term results. Watch on YouTube https://youtu.be/vcAQRWNmSbs Episode Transcript Cheryl McColgan (00:00.494)Hi everyone. Welcome to the Heal Nourish Grow podcast. Today I am joined by the lovely and very smiley Celeste Rains-Turk and I am really excited to chat with her today because she is a mental health professional. She specifically deals a lot with helping people with their relationship with food, has so many free resources for that and so many programs. And in addition to that, she is a prolific podcaster and I've basically been pod-stalking her for the last two or three months. Celeste Rains-Turk (00:07.45)You Cheryl McColgan (00:30.294)I know a lot about Celeste, but now I'm going to share that with you guys, because I just think she is a really amazing source of information and really a light in the world of health and fitness. So Celeste, all that being said, welcome to the show. And could you just share with people a little bit about yourself? How did you become attracted to this mental health work and what lights you up about doing this kind of work? Celeste Rains-Turk (00:53.403)Well, first of all, thank you for having me. I like your vocabulary usage. It's great. So what I'll start with what lights me up about this work because I think that lends insight into what got me into it. So what lights me up most about the work that I do is seeing people achieve something they didn't think was possible. So a lot of the people that I work with, they come to me almost on a last hope, a last resort. thinking is there any way I can actually heal my relationship with food and my body without sacrificing my fitness and physique goals? Because so many of them have been told by fitness professionals or mental health professionals that they cannot do both and I want them to know that they can. So it is incredibly rewarding for me to see them actually achieve that goal. That is amazing because they don't expect to do that. Now, as far as what got me into it was I personally Cheryl McColgan (01:32.974)been pulled by.

In this episode of Training Age, hosts Heather Adams and Valerie Lusvardi welcome Celeste Rains-Turk (@celestial_fit), a leading expert in mindset and body image within the fitness industry. Celeste shares her unique journey, from entering the bodybuilding world in 2015—where she uncovered underlying disordered eating patterns—to shifting her academic focus from dietetics to psychology. Her passion for holistic health and mindset is reflected in her podcast, Confessions of a Bikini Pro, and her powerful tagline, “build more than just a body.” As a licensed associate counselor and author of Believe Your Way to Badass, Celeste is dedicated to helping others transform their relationship with their bodies and themselves. The conversation explores how body image evolves across different life stages and introduces “what if-formations” as an alternative to traditional affirmations. By questioning self-perceptions and aligning behaviors with a positive self-image, listeners can develop the skills to navigate body changes with confidence. Celeste, Heather, and Val discuss how body image challenges can arise at any age and emphasize the importance of anchoring self-worth in actions that align with personal values. The discussion takes a deeper turn into the intersection of identity, body image, and faith, highlighting the risks of tying self-worth solely to physical appearance. Through personal anecdotes, Heather, Val, and Celeste stress the importance of rooting identity in values rather than external aesthetics and navigating societal pressures that often challenge this balance. As they explore ways to improve the relationship with food and body, they discuss how flexibility in diet and mindfulness can lead to a healthier self-perception. The episode closes with insights on self-talk, self-care, and balancing aesthetics with personal and family values, encouraging a well-rounded approach to fitness goals that positively impact all aspects of life.

In this week’s episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk speaks with IFBB Bikini Pro Morgan Smith. This 23 year old bombshell started competing in 2018 and turned pro at her second national show! She has a bachelor’s in political science with future dreams of attending law school. Her daily activities include coaching a successful traveling softball team and working in the painting business with her boyfriend. Celeste and Morgan kick off the episode by discussing Morgan’s road to become an IFBB Pro. Her passion for bodybuilding started during her college experience and needing to find a community after leaving softball. Morgan missed the team dynamic and the mental challenges of playing a rigorous sport. Morgan believes bodybuilding can be a team effort but enforces that it does rely on constituent individual challenges. Morgan states she is competitive to a fault. She emphasizes that she wants to place well, not just get on a stage. She states that 110% is the bare minimum in this sport, and there is always something a competitor can do to improve. Morgan tells listeners to focus on personal growth instead of comparison to avoid burn out. Celeste and Morgan advice fellow competitors to enjoy their time in the NPC by recognizing the friendships and opportunities made in the community. Morgan reflects on a moment she was told, “You cannot succeed in this sport.” Reflecting on her competitive nature, she was mentally ready to prove them wrong by hiring a coach and buying home equipment. Her mindset as an IFBB Pro is now focused on complete intention in the gym. Morgan states she did not want to use the pandemic as an excuse and feels empowered to consistently improve herself during the pandemic. Morgan explains her emotional process of turning Pro and the doubt she had prior to her win. She was one week out from the show that awarded her a pro card, and she believed she would not get a high ranking after being in 3rd callouts the week prior. She is now self-coaching while in search for her next team and online coach that puts focus on attention to detail. Celeste and Morgan go all in with talking about social media pressure, learning to step back, and finding the right people to surround yourself with. Celeste believes the pressure to show up on social media is often due to personal judgement, trying to make a name of themselves, and fear of failing their friends. Morgan wraps up the episode by giving her best advice to new competitors and women aspired to reach the IFBB league. Morgan’s genuine demeanor and words of wisdom create an episode you do not want to miss! In this week’s episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk has the pleasure of interviewing IFBB Bikini Pro Belinda Rivera. This cheeky pro started competing in 2015 and won her Pro Card at the 2018 North Americans in the 40 and over category. She has been working with Lifestyle Physiques since the beginning of her bodybuilding career and has accomplished this while being a loving mother to her two beautiful daughters. To begin, Celeste questions Belinda about her late start in bodybuilding and her opinions on being older than most of the girls. Belinda never expected to start her hobby at age 39 and winning her IFBB Bikini Pro Card one year later. She admits to being physically active throughout her whole life, but her passion for fitness began after the birth of her second child. She gives credit to her fitness background and sports for her transition to intense dieting for competitions. Belinda does enforce that this sport is personal and requires intense discipline rather than a team dynamic. Belinda states she only competed in one show a year to get back in shape when she was an amateur. She made the decision to move to the National stage after placing top 5 in an open and master division. Even though she was incredibly nervous and self-conscious, Belinda went on to win her Pro Card at her first National show! She thanks her coach, Ray from Lifestyle Physiques, for taking her competition to the next level by aligning with her core values of professionalism and sportsmanship. Celeste and Belinda discuss the value of having a quality coach and provides an inside perspective of the coach-client relationship. Belinda tries to be reasonable with her clients and would rather motivate her team rather than tear them down when they do not complete their plan. Furthermore, Celeste and Belinda have an open-ended conversation about the nutritional and mental approach to dieting. Belinda is happy to share her knowledge and experience within the community regarding growing muscle and improving posing. She explains that everything she does as a coach should be expected in the athlete. Belinda relies on her team for group posing, one-on-one sessions, and is open to advice from other coaching. Belinda details her journey of a fitness hobby turned career. She admits that her children being older helped with the personal and financial obligations and felt comfortable leaving the home to accomplish her aspirations. In addition, Belinda feels that her experience in life made her a more competitive and goal-oriented individual. Finally, Celeste and Belinda discuss all things improvement season, balance, and daily habits for success. Belinda tells viewers to “always remember your why” and to embrace the lifestyle. Furthermore, she also details her daughter’s opinion of her bodybuilding career. Spoiler alert – her daughter is one of her posing coaches! This week, host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down with Chris Nicole cohost on the Prep Life podcast who started her competition journey in 2015 as a hobby and prepped for one show a year. She holds certifications in both nutrition and exercise from NPTI along with Precision Nutrition Chris starts off by sharing how the encouragement of a friend initially brought her to competing as well as her desire to take her fitness hobby to the next level. She shares how her type A personality played a large roll in her journey and how it had attached her own self worth to her adherence of her plan. As the episode progresses, Chris talks about her own history with disordered eating. She shares how inquiries from friends and family about her weight loss made her only want to control it more through over exercising and under eating. It was a pivotal moment when she was lying on her back and realized she could see her own skeleton that made her realize that she needed help. This history doesn’t hold her back in her preps, however, because she has learned how to properly frame her mindset around her goals so that they are healthy. She shares the importance of setting a goal for a certain leanness for a temporary time and not to live at. Chris continues to talk about her most recent show and taking last place. She shares how she felt in denial of it for quite some time, but after a few months she realized how disappointed she was in the placing. Chris talks about how she tried to control her reverse despite what her coach wanted her to do and how they were able to sit down and develop a plan for making the most of the improvement season. On the note of physical health, Chris shares her own struggles with hypoglycemia as well as scoliosis and the impact that both have on competing for her. She talks about how hypoglycemia causes her to rethink the way that most people would eat in a prep and experimenting with what works best for her. Because of the scoliosis she has had since a young age, Chris talks about modifications she has had to make to her posing in order to appear balanced while on the stage. Throughout the episode, Chris’ passion for mental health and self improvement is apparent and she talks about one of the tactics she uses in order to get the most out of every day. She shares the important aspects of her morning routine and the appointment she creates with herself as well as the daily discussion she has with her boyfriend that features two important questions to positively reflect on the activities of the day. As the episode comes to a close, Chris shares her best advice to both new competitors and those on their way to their pro card. In this insightful episode, she continues to stress the ever important theme of competing and life in general, “Your value doesn’t come from the things you do, it comes from who you are.” CONNECT WITH CHRIS: INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/chrisnicole_ifbbpro/ ALL LINKS: https://linktr.ee/chrisnicole_ifbbpro HEAR HER COACH SERIES EPISODE WITH GLAM GIRL: http://www.celestial.fit/confessions-of-a-bikini-pro-podcast/coaches-series-glam-girl-bikini CONNECT WITH CELESTE: IG: https://www.instagram.com/celestial_fit/ WEBSITE: http://www.celestial.fit/ EPISODE TIME STAMPS [2:50] Pre Stage Rituals [4:10] Increasing stage time to one minute as an IFBB Pro [6:33] Transitioning a fitness hobby to a competition career [8:23] Using the perfectionist mentality in life as an athlete [10:47] Putting Self worth into adherence [13:17] The drive to compete [15:31] Pivotal moments that stressed the importance of mental health [18:22] Previous struggles with disordered eating [23:53] Changing a mindset around getting leaner [27:02] Placing last at her most recent show [34:21] Feeling pressure to perform a certain way as an IFBB pro and a coach [38:34] The impact being an IFBB Pro has on coaching [44:12] Feedback from shows [47:21] Managing Stress and Hormones in the improvement season [51:19] Handling gut health and hypoglycemia while nourishing her body [55:32] Impact scoliosis has on competing [1:01:11] Prioritizing a morning routine [1:06:47] The impact reviewing the day has on the approach to goal setting [1:11:12] Best advice for the girl who’s never competed and the one who’s on the road to pro
In this week's episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk has the pleasure of speaking with Chelsea Stonestreet, a 29 year old business development director for Spooner physical therapy and a realtor in Arizona who also provides online lifestyle coaching. who used to be a competitive boxer before having her now 8 year old daughter. She started bodybuilding 3 and a half years ago and fell in love with the structure of prep as it was one thing she could control in her life on her mission to be confident in her body post baby. Even though she didn’t love being on stage, was told she couldn’t be successful in the sport due to severe stretch marks, and getting second callouts all at her first show she decided she could do better and proved to herself she was the only one who would define her success. This sparked the next 3 years and ultimately after 12 shows a first place and pro card win at NPC Universe. This soon to be wife and step mom serves as a powerful example that anything is possible if you put in the work and never give up. Chelsea explains to Celeste about her first show-day experience and insecurities about wearing a bikini. Even though Chelsea has been successful in the IFBB division, she was once told at the amateur level that her stretch marks on her abdomen would hold her back from success. Due to her competitive nature and desire to better herself, Chelsea dove into self-improvement eventually earning her IFBB title at NPC Universe after twelve shows. Chelsea now reflects on her past struggles and successes before stepping on stage to truly enjoy the experience. Chelsea discusses her previous passion for boxing. She states that competitive boxing and bikini bodybuilding have similarities, mostly by subjecting yourself to the judgement of hundreds of people in the crowd. Chelsea oftentimes has to reflect on her boxing experiences to get herself calm her nerves, “You can get into a [boxing] ring and get yourself knocked out, you can throw yourself in a bikini and go on stage” Furthermore, Chelsea states her strength of digging deep and pushing further than last time allows her to shine in competition prep. Celeste asks Chelsea why she decided to transition from boxing to bodybuilding. Chelsea believes getting punched repeatedly will affect her mental and physical long-term health. Although she has always loved the sport of bodybuilding, being a single mom made her weigh the importance of family over injury. She will occasionally “hit the bag” for stress relief and cardio during her offseason. Celeste and Chelsea discuss her training on prep and post season. Chelsea focuses on increased calories and heavy lifting in the offseason as she is able to build muscle easily. As a lifestyle coach, she develops circuit style training and bodyweight exercises while keeping the main focus on movement. Chelsea informs Celeste on her body improvements over the years. During her final national show, Chelsea was told she was too lean and conditioned and was able to feed herself up to the next show. Chelsea advises listeners to find a trustworthy and quality coach that gives adequate feedback as feedback from the judges can be confusing and frustrating. Celeste explains that if you love the sport, you will continue to pursue it despite the differing feedback of judges. Chelsea discusses how minor details matter for placement. Suit color is a priority for her coach and believes red is the best color for her overall package. Chelsea emphasizes that stage presence and overall package, to include your suit color, can be the difference between placement. Chelsea tells Celeste she has never been told by a judge that her stretch marks affected her placement. Chelsea has been micro needling to improve the color and density of her stretch marks and has noticed great changes. Chelsea shares that both herself and Fiancé earned their IFBB pro cards at the NPC Universe! Prior to meeting her Fiancé, she accepted being a single mother. Chelesa admits to initially being scared of being a step-mother but has fallen in love with her Fiancés children over the years. Chelsea is proud to have influence on young children and to provide siblings for her daughter. Celeste and Chelsea praise the newest Bikini Olympian and are happy to see a mother win the title. Furthermore, Chelsea values quality family bonding and makes sure to have family dinner every night without cell phones. Finally, Chelsea tells Celeste her goals as an IFBB Pro while providing listeners and fellow competitors advice on reaching the IFBB stage. On this episode of coaches' series Celeste Rains-Turk features the power couple behind Team Cosmic Bodies featuring Lauren Dannenmiller who has a BS in Health Science and has been a guest on the show as an IFBB bikini pro who won the 2017 NPC National bikini overall champion title and competitor Kyle Burns who has his BS in health and exercise science and is in pre doctorate stages for physical therapy. Celeste starts off the episode by asking Lauren and Kyle to share their coaching philosophy. Kyle explains how their priority is to take the most responsible approach possible and heavily emphasize educating their clients. Celeste then asks Kyle what inspired him to pursue his doctorate in Physical Therapy while also running his business. After discussing his goals in terms of his education, Celeste uses Kyle’s response to transition into the question of how he and Lauren know how far they can push an athlete. Lauren shares her thoughts on how both the athlete’s level their goals help determine how hard she will push them during their prep. Both Lauren and Kyle highlight the importance of trust and communication with their clients and how that affects the levels they are willing to push them to. Next, Celeste asks them how they prioritize their energy and focus since they coach clients at various levels and goals. Then, Lauren, and Kyle discuss their thoughts on a natural athlete’s potential for success in the NPC given that they may not be genetically gifted. Lauren and Kyle share their experiences and insight about the importance of patience and understanding that natural athletes, especially new to competing, need to be realistic with their expectations and timelines for their goals and how “living the lifestyle” will benefit them long term. Lauren, having been a natural athlete her entire competing career, shares valuable insight from her own experiences and again emphasizes how patience is key for both success and longevity in the sport. From there, Celeste asks Lauren and Kyle how they prioritize their clients hormone health. Lauren mentions why her and Kyle prefer longer preps for their clients and how that method allows for refeeds and diet breaks which both can help maintain healthy hormone levels for as long as possible during prep. They also mention how tracking a female competitors cycle adds to their data collection for their prep and how it plays a role in how they can better coach their clients. Celeste then asks Lauren and Kyle how they deal with the mental and emotional demands involved with coaching. The couple shares that although it’s still a work in progress, they have learned from their mentors about the importance of setting boundaries and specifying days or time away from work. They share that they feel this will give them not only longevity in coaching but allows for them to invest time and attention to their relationship. Next, Celeste asks Lauren and Kyle what they feel makes a good coach and team. The couple discusses what they feel is important and also mention goals they have for the future of Team Cosmic Bodies while still sticking to their principles and philosophies. Celeste then asks Lauren and Kyle what important questions an athlete should ask during the initial interview process and afterwards they share some of their coaching pet peeves. Celeste then asks Lauren and Kyle’s opinion on politics in competing. The conversation transitions into athlete qualities, and Celeste has Lauren and Kyle share what they feel separates the good from the phenomenal athletes. After discussing coaching philosophy Celeste starts the hypothetical round of questions. Celeste starts off the round by asking: if she was a competitor with overall wins under her belt, wanting to hit the national circuit yet is looking for a new coaching approach, why would she hire Lauren and Kyle. Lauren shares her experiences on her journey through various national shows on her road to pro and explains why those lessons make her a great coach. Next, the couple discusses how they address clients who express that they don’t feel they are ready for their upcoming show. Lauren and Kyle also share what they would like a first time competitor to know before deciding to commit to a contest prep. Celeste then asks how the couple approaches training and nutrition when a client comes to them after a bad rebound. Lastly, Celeste asks if Lauren and Kyle would still put an athlete on stage if they have executed their plan to a tee, except for their posing and stage presentation. Celeste then moves on to the rapid fire round of questions, asking the couple to give short one-sentence answers to topics such as waist trainers, macros vs meal plans, fed vs fasted, and HIIT or steady state cardio, water cutting and supplements. Based off of their responses, Celeste takes the lead and asks Lauren and Kyle to expand on their thoughts on water cutting during peak week and before a show. Next, Celeste asks the couple to share why they advocate for the use of creatine. After discussing creatine and other supplementation, Kyle shares his thoughts on waist trainers. To conclude the episode, Lauren and Kyle tell listeners where and how they can find and connect with them further. Today, host Celeste Rains-Turk interviews Adam Atkinson of See You Later Leaner who has had a passion for fitness and health since he was young as his dad and he created their own home gym which sparked a passion for lifting much like his fathers passion. In this week’s episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk speaks with newly crowned IFBB Professional who played and coached club and collegiate volleyball and has been competing since 2016 and just went pro at NPC universe 2020, while working as a sales executive marketing rep for Ticor Title and living the wife and dog mom life, Maeghan Egli, to discuss the ins and outs of her road to her pro card. Maeghan starts by sharing what initially got her interested in the sport and how she began her first prep with a novice coach. She talks about how they learned about the methodology and competing together and how maybe honey-glazed salmon was a little too complicated of a meal while prepping. In her first two years of competing working with this novice coach, Maeghan talks about how she went to her first national show with no understanding of the weight that nationals carry and what it truly means to earn a pro card, despite walking away from that show with a 4th place title. Although she received an incredible placing, Maeghan talks about the day of prejudging for her first national show when she experienced a scare – passing out prior to stepping on stage. As someone with a very all-or-nothing mindset, Maeghan learned the importance of listening to her body and eating or drinking water when she needed it, especially because the incident left her with 12 stiches underneath her chin. As the episode progresses, Maeghan shares the importance of researching a coach and what factors influenced her decision to hire a coach that had more experience in the world of competing than she did as opposed to someone who would learn along with her and the experiences and expectations she had of herself when working with this more experienced coach. Maeghan shares in depth about her no-excuses mentality and how it has brought her this far in not only competing, but in her career and her marriage. She shares the importance of routine in her daily life and how her athlete mentality has influenced her to become the best possible version of herself, which includes merging her professional life with her competition and fitness life. Maeghan shares about all the wonderful opportunities that have presented themselves to her since she made the decision to no longer isolate each part of her life. As the episode draws to a close, Maeghan shares how her strategies have changed between Universe and North American’s as well as the feedback she has received and how she plans to grow and change (which also includes a surprising, uncommon area where she is looking for growth). Maeghan talks about how her suit and hair color have changed over the years and the reasoning behind the decision to make these changes. In perfect Confessions of a Bikini Pro fashion, the interview wraps up with Maeghan sharing her best advice for those new to competing as well as those looking to go pro. This wonderful, insightful and relatable episode, Maeghan shows how to live by the words “If it’s important to you, you’ll find a way; if not, you’ll find an excuse.” CONNECT WITH MAEGHAN: https://www.instagram.com/maeghanegli/ CONNECT WITH CELESTE: https://www.instagram.com/celestial_fit/ EPISODE TIME STAMPS [1:20] Pre Stage Rituals [3:02] The first Prep [5:04] Working with a novice coach [7:13] Knowing when to switch coaches [10:18] Stepping away from a show and taking time to grow [12:33] Showing up at nationals with a love for the sport over nerves [13:12] Passing out before the stage [16:30] How passing out changed a view on bodybuilding [21:59] Signs your body is giving you that you need a break [24:25] Working with an experienced coach [25:56] Expectations of a new coach [27:36] Post-Wedding Prep [29:00] An athlete mentality and it’s influence in life [33:01] Leaving no room for excuses [36:19] Developing a morning routine [39:08] Managing a work schedule with competing and a marriage [43:01] Sharing her business and fitness together on social media [46:10] Inspiration after earning a pro card [47:38] How being a pro effects the way you show up for yourself [49:15] Current goals with no show in mind [50:45] Favorite exercises for glutes, hamstrings and shoulders [52:07] The difference between Universe and North American’s [54:09] Peaking strategy leading into Universe [57:22] Changing Hair Color [58:40] Feedback on suit color [1:00:13] Best advice for girls who have never competed before and those on the road to pro Life long athlete, played and coached club and collegiate volleyball, went pro at NPC universe in 2020, wife and dog mom [1:20] pre stage ritual: chatting with the girls in line, no specific ritual, in deep conversations with those around her to distract herself from nerves [3:02] first prep in 2016 and inspiration for competing – longer prep because she had been seeing a trainer at her local gym for winter/summer break to stay in shape for volleyball then go back to college, came back after graduating and the trainer saw her, even though she wasn’t training for a purpose. There was a local one in may of the next year and she was all in for it, it was the first time he had prepped anyone, super cheap training like $100/month, started in NOV 2016, intention of may 2017 show. [5:04] working with a coach who had never prepped anyone before – fancy, complicated meals, was hard to control variables, 4 or 5 weeks into prep she was getting leaner and it was obvious he didn’t know what he was doing so he brought one of his friends in and asked for help, after 1.5-2 weeks into that she fired the trainer because the other guy was doing the work and she asked the other guy to prep her. Stayed with him for the first 2 years of the competition [7:13] Knowing when to switch coaches – her old coach and her were learning and experiencing things together, she got to the point where she wanted to pursue it in a more competitive way and she felt that she needed someone that had more knowledge than her, not someone who was learning with her. She hired Shane Heugly because he had been in the game and knew what level she wanted to be at as opposed to growing linearly. If you’re wanting to look at other coaches, talk to your coach about it, let them understand what your thoughts are and be transparent. She wanted someone who was already competitive at the level she wants to be at. [10:18] Stepping away from your first national show and taking time to grow – the universe delivers when you’re ready because I stepped on to that national stage not knowing what a procard was and what placing meant. She was just enjoying training and doing it because she loved the sport. Her husband proposed to her two weeks before nationals, wanting to get married in a year, so after this show she’s going to focus on life and wedding stuff, before she even received her placing she knew she was going to take time off, she knew she wasn’t going to compete until 3 months after her wedding minimum. [12:33] Showing up at nationals with a love for the sport over nerves – placed 4th at first national show, she thinks that [13:12] passing out before stage – follows her plans to a T – i.e. if plan says eat at 8am, won’t eat at 7:59 or 8:01, woke up that morning dehydrated of prejudging, had to get her tan touched up and got super dizzy standing in line for touch ups and passed out in the tanning tent, woke up instantly and had hit the underside of her chin on the fan in front of her, split open her chin, stepped on stage for prejudging with makeshift bandages under her chin, held a tissue there seconds before she stepped on stage, went to the ER later that night and got 12 stitches, went back and did finals with stitches in her face. Lessons learned – don’t cut water, don’t drink wine the night before and EAT if you’re dizzy! [16:30] How passing out changed her view of bodybuilding – it’s hard because it could have been prevented had she eaten before she went to tanning, get in the mindset in competing that it’s so hardcore you should push through the suffering, you need to recognize your limits. Stepping on stage is not worth your overall health. In that moment I felt like I had to push past it, but it’s important to know that you do have to go to extreme levels, but if it comes down to “I’m going to pass out” just eat and drink some water. The fact that she hit the only part that the judges couldn’t see was insane. She knew that passing out was on her, her coach didn’t tell her not to eat or drink, she made that decision. Also judges will disqualify you if they know you passed out. [21:59] Body giving you signs you need a break – 3-4 weeks out from USAs, her body was stalling, not losing weight, was doing HIIT and steady state cardio (2-3 sessions/day) and nothing was changing. Coach at the time reached out to friends and was like “what do I do” and the coaches gave little pieces of advice (i.e. parking further away, increasing overall NEAT). Was getting so tired that despite cardio going up, daily activity was going way down, wasn’t doing anything, that was negating the cardio. Didn’t properly address it, didn’t reverse properly after the show, tried to do macros but had no idea how to, was overeating at time, her body eventually “gave up” and she got to a weight where it didn’t change, but she wasn’t comfortable with it [24:25] Shows with an experienced coach – never doubted whether or not she would be ready [25:56] Expectations with a new coach – didn’t want to do macros, she just wanted to feel good, did a meal plan “with options”, interchanging her proteins/carbs/fats. Got a meal plan implemented and was focused on making her coach happy – helped that she was a collegiate athlete. She wanted to know if she was going to get results with him so focus was to be 100% so she could be focused on that. Cardio was down and food was up, had a really good maintence while adhering to the plan [27:36] Post-Wedding Prep – started at a high maintence and worked into the prep, started with a mini-cut for 4 weeks before the wedding and then started prep 1-2 weeks after she got back for nationals in November. Shane is slow to change things with her athletes. “If your body is still responding, there’s no need to change anything”. [29:00] An athlete mentality and it’s overall influence in her life – had a coach say one time “if it’s important to you, you’ll find a way, if not, you’ll find an excuse”. It became engrained in her and has looked at that in all areas of her life. If it’s truly important to you, you’ll make it happen. Was late to practice because her car was towed and made her run lines because she was light. If you wouldn’t have parked in the tow zone, you wouldn’t have gotten towed, then you wouldn’t have been late. If you want something, you won’t let anything stand in the way. “you’re either growing or dying, there is no stagnation” [33:01] Leaving no room for excuses – adding things into a routine. Wanted to read books and recognized that she needed to set it in the schedule, developing a plan around her goals. Started reading during steady state cardio because she was “wasting” time via Instagram/music so she started reading during steady state to maximize. When the gyms shut down she implemented a bedtime routine where she would read before bed, helped relax her. Added a morning routine and started reading during that time too. She was noticing that things she would learn about in books would show up in life and she was able to handle situations better because she had more knowledge from the books. Our brain is attunded to be mindful of the things that happen to us. [36:19] The beginning of the morning routine – miracle morning by Hal Elrod, spent the first 20 pages arguing with the book lol and then she said ok, I’m going to try this, then she tried it. After the first 3 days (which sucked), then she started the morning routine and then noticed that the anxiousness that had cropped up in COVID world was beginning to melt away. [39:08] Managing a work schedule with competing and a marriage – sales and marketing rep for a title company, pre covid she was meeting with real estate agents and learn how they market themselves, then try to fill the holes in their business. When covid happened, zoom became king, had to get appointment with clients via zoom because realtors initially wanted to meet when things went away, then it got to the point where everyone did zoom all the time and they were over it lol. Relationship wise, he is a grower for family dispensary, it’s all he’s been doing and they were considered essential so literally nothing changed for him, he still worked his regular job and regular hours. She’s home when he comes home for lunch which is different, but nothing really changed. They saw each other more because she was working from home and not 45 minutes away. She also had two extra hours because she didn’t have that extra drive time. Didn’t have to wake up at 4:30 anymore and could wake up at 5:30. Prep wasn’t easy, but easier in terms of fitting things in. [43:01] Sharing her business (title company and fitness) on social media – tried to keep fitness and normal life separate in the beginning because she thought it would be looked down on by people who don’t know anything about the sport. She wanted to remain professional, and FB was her business side of things whereas IG was all the competing stuff. Noticing clients and potential clients had a huge wow factor when they found out she was a competitor. When business and health align, you flourish. The more she combined the two worlds, the more she is seeing inspiring people and getting business opportunities she wouldn’t have otherwise gotten. [46:10] Feeling differently after earning her procard, shift in goals with the sport – felt the fire to work hard and reach the procard goal, but she feels more relaxed now because there is no show in mind and there isn’t a big “all or nothing” mentality right now, but at the same time, feels so motivated and excited and wants to be better, but once she got her procard, her level of intensity increased. Super motivated and inspired, yet calm about it [47:38] how does being a pro effect the way you show up for yourself – train harder, pushing harder and failing more with weights, now isn’t just “going through the motions” and her husband went to her with the gym for the last 4 weeks of her prep so her husband could spot her and she couldn’t take short cuts. Even in the garage gym, she feels like she’s been on another level and pushing even harder [49:15] Current focus/goals – wants to properly reverse and wants to know what she will do to make herself competitive at the pro level. Wants to go in with intention. Need shoulders, glutes and calves, so on those days, she’s hyper focused because she knows she needs to really push until failure. Also added calves in on another day [50:45] Exercises for glutes, hamstrings and shoulders – hip thrusts (HEAVY), tie between dumbbell shoulder press (with husband spotting so she can go heavy) and lateral raises seated (feels like it puts more focus on her shoulders), hamstring curl machine [52:07] what set her apart at universe as opposed to north americans – posing 100%, her north americans posing was “cringey” lol. The DJ at north americans was awesome, so the DJ was awesome, and she was way too excited and she practically ran on stage and posed way too fast and ran off. Practiced being slower with headphones on to super fast music (lots of latin music) and focused on being slow so the judges will focus on her and show off what she worked for. [54:09] Peaking strategy different than past experiences – body was super on fire. 1.5 weeks out she looked in the mirror and was like “I look good”, and she doesn’t really feel that very often, but she knew it was the best she ever looked, even her husband was like “this is the best you’ve ever looked”, this show she didn’t hardly carb load the day of the show (only the day before). Only had one meal before going on stage and shane’s wife said she looked perfect, didn’t need extra carbs or salt, felt like she looked really good with this approach, even though it wasn’t planned that way [57:22] Changing hair color – changing her hair color for life, she didn’t change it because of competing. Started going blonde in college because she wanted to be but had naturally dark brown hair. It was a lot of maintence so she went back to natural color and stepped on stage with brown hair. [58:40] Feedback on a suit color – have control over suit color, jewelry, everything before stepping on stage. Was first red, then switched coaches and tiffany suggested a couple colors went for like a more purple, but then went blue and they did well in blue so they’re sticking with it. [1:00:13] Best advice for girls who have never competed and those on the road to pro: get a coach that knows what they’re doing from the get-go and do your research. Interview your coaches and pick the one that best aligns with you. Be a student of the sport. Be patient on the road to pro and be willing to work hard because the sport is not for everyone. Not everyone is meant to be a professional bikini competitor. [1:02:15] Connecting via social media

In this week's episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk welcomes IFBB Pro, holistic nutrition expert, and Puerto Rican bombshell Mia Sanchez. After finding her passion in bodybuilding, she quickly rose to the ranks by winning her pro card at Universe in 2016. In addition to her love for fitness, Mia has her bachelors in Communication Studies, is an excellent writer, painter, and a great advocate for mental health in the IFBB division. Celeste and Mia begin the episode by discussing Mia’s journey into fitness. Mia explains how she was an overweight child and was made aware of her food choices since age 13. After removing red meat from her diet, Mia began to feel confident in her new shape which gave her the courage to start a fitness journey. Mia states that bodybuilding opened her eyes to everything she can achieve aesthetically. Celeste asks Mia about her journey into bodybuilding. States she found an advertisement in a magazine several years ago. Mia states she was initially laughed at by her peers, however she persisted and grew her passion and fell in love with the bodybuilding atmosphere. This passion grew even more after placing well at her first show. Mia’s current goal is to be invited to the Arnold Classic or be qualified for the Olympia. Mia openly discusses with Celeste about feeling exhausted during prep. She has learned to “embrace the suck” while keeping focused on beating her best package. Mia tells viewers to appreciate the outcomes, follow the plan, and be proud of the journey. Mia explains her post operation breast augmentation complications. She states she has had to have several reconstructive breast surgeries throughout the years. Mia started her social media accounts the morning after her breast augmentation for other competitors to follow her recovery. She admits to feeling pressured to have a social presence after winning her Pro Card and felt as if she had to share her whole life to the fitness world. Over the years, Mia let go of the pressure to be an influencer and focus on impressing the judges instead. In addition to bodybuilding, Mia’s true passion is writing, painting, and being surrounded by loved ones. Mia opens up about her coach, grandmother, and dog passing away last year. She explains to Celeste the began to doubt her presence in the IFBB professional stage and worry about hiring a new coach. Mia made the choice to take time off, visit family in Puerto Rico, travel across the United States, and prioritize her mental health by seeing a holistic psychologist. Mia admits to not knowing the feeling of “being off a diet” before taking time off and believes her diet break helped her achieve an amazing package. For her next competition prep, Mia explains to Celeste how she will be putting primary focus on her recovery. She loves the process of getting ready for stage, but admits she needs to also love the recovery part. Mia is excited to get massages, take a few days off from cardio, practicing yoga, and laying on the couch. In addition to physical rest, she will be keeping her journaling, story writing, and painting as a priority. During her coaching, she encourages quiet time and advocates for her clients to prioritize her Mental Health. She recommends her clients have five obtainable, positive, and simple goals to reflect on each week, especially for her lifestyle team members. Intrinsic motivation, confidence, and discipline is hard to teach, and recommends coaches to be slow on their approach. Not focusing on her negatives and acknowledging her fears. Mia and Celeste end the episode by giving her best advice to women who are new to competing. Mia’s interesting journey to fitness, nearly 5 year history in the IFBB division, and unique perspective on recovery makes an episode you do not want to miss! In episode two of the Returning Guest series, host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down for a second time with Crisis Counselor, Master student of gerontology, Registered Yoga Teacher and Certified Personal Trainer, Kate Abate to dig deeper into Kate’s life outside of competing. Although she is not actively competing, Kate shares how she has continued to make her body a priority. As discussed on her previous episode, Kate has struggled with her gut health and talks about her continued journey to improve her digestion. She shares about the Autoimmune diet she has been following and it’s impact on her overall gut health and colitis. Beyond that, Kate discusses her own hypermobility and the levels it can work at outside of simply “being flexible”. She shares how the hypermobility works its way down to her internal organs and joints and the correlation that exists between her hypermobility and her physical and mental health. Kate studies gerontology which is the study of the aging process. Kate talks about the aging process as growth and development. She talks about how even though the body no longer grows taller, it grows and develops in many other fascinating ways. She specifically talks about mental health in the older population by asking the question, “Have you ever seen an 80 year old freaking out and stressed about something?” Because she is receiving this new degree, Kate talks about how she wants to expand her business once she receives her diploma. Just like getting this degree is allowing her to “pivot” in her own life, Kate wants to be able to reach those who have also reached a pivot point in their life, whether it be in fitness, lifestyle, wellbeing or even a financial pivot. Even through all of this future planning, Kate shares how she is able to bring herself back to the present moment and enjoy every day. As the episode progresses, Kate talks about how she began her career in crisis counseling, stemming from trauma she experienced in her own childhood and in her 20s. In this week's episode, Celeste Rains-Turk reintroduces Tamara Haddad, a previous guest from the beginning of her podcast who has since retired from the IFBB division. While she may be retired from competing, Tamara is still well-known for her excellent posing coaching and active in supporting other competitors. To Begin, Tamara opens up to Celeste about her last show, the Arnold Classic Australia, in 2017. She admits to post-show months of rebounding, feeling depressed, and unmotivated. Tamara explains how her biggest struggle was learning how to balance fitness as a lifestyle instead of a competition. She states it took approximately 9 months to get back into shape and how the slow and steady approach gave her the lifestyle shape she always dreamed of having. Tamara is thankful to have had the chance to compete at The Arnold and Olympia and uses her experiences to coach other competitors to these elite stages. Tamara explains how the hardest part about overcoming post-competing blues is the mental changes and lifestyle adaptations. Tamara tells Celeste how she used to believe you couldn’t take rest days, and now realizes that taking rest days allows for muscles to heal, bones to repair, and mind recovery. Tamara no longer has food guilt and chooses to eat three fuller meals instead of five portion-controlled meals. Tamara and Celeste discuss the heavy and often disregarded topic of addiction in the bodybuilding sport. Tamara admits she was addicted to competing, Adderall, Xanax, and sex which reared its ugly head after retiring. Tamara decided to cleanse her body, mind, and soul and admits to having a predisposition to extreme addictive characteristics. She started her recovery by doing a 90-day commitment, sun healing, and focusing on spiritual growth. While Tamara was afraid of her true self without the title of IFBB pro champion, she worked with God to release those stigmas. Tamara happily expresses she is now three months clean of prescription substances! Celeste and Tamara open up about the breakup from her fiancé and how she was struggled with intimacy with partners since. In addition to healing herself, she admits to Celeste how she avoided masturbation to build up her “spiritual soul” She states since her 90 day commitment cleanse, she is now able to have a sexual relationship with a partner and raise her vibrations/energy. Tamara states how online competitions is “the future of bodybuilding”. She praises the division for transforming to an online stage and is pleasantly surprised how successful the first one was in July. In the future, she is hoping the Top 10 gets more prize money to help boost audience participation and reimburse competitors for their hard work. Finally, Tamara gives viewers advice to competitors who feel addicted to the identity of the sport. Tamara’s honesty and open conversations provide an episode you do not want to miss!
