For EP 49, we had the pleasure of welcoming one of the UK's leading prep coaches, @amplified_nutrition head coach @jakewatts_ampJake has a wealth of knowledge and a huge roster of both professional and amateur bikini athletes, this was an episode that was long overdue. In this episode we cover:- How Jake built the business he stands so proudly at the forefront of now, his commitments beyond bodybuilding and how he juggles this;- His approach to coaching and peaking athletes at different levels, how has this changed over the years, if at all;- Managing athlete mindsets, what does he do to prepare an athlete for stage psychologically and why does this make a difference;- The biggest challenges facing bikini athletes now vs then, his views on how the sport is accelerating and whether this is impacting decision making by coaches and athletes;- Is bikini still an entry level division? His thoughts on why bikini is so hard to nail, manipulations to consider and where his athletes need him the most. This really was an incredible discussion, with so much food for thought. Jake advocates so highly for his athletes and you can truly see his passion shine through the way he talks about his commitment to them. As always, please like, comment and share! In this eye-opening episode, we delve into the realities of pursuing a natural path to turning pro in the bikini division.
Marcus Perry is an IFBB Pro Classic Physique Olympian, with over 9 years in the fitness industry, his approach brings clarity, direction, and positive support to his clients. Marcus hails from Columbus, Ohio where he grew up watching “The Rock” on WWA and started kickboxing in his late teens. This inspired him to lift weights and pursue his dream of looking like Kevin Levrone, his favorite bodybuilder. Marcus won his first bodybuilding competition as a light-heavyweight in 2012 and has been a dedicated athlete ever since. His work ethic and natural drive led him to win his first regional show at the NPC Kentucky Muscle Championship in 2016. In September 2018, he turned pro in the men's heavyweight division and made his pro debut in the 2019 Men's Classic Physique. Marcus also works as a sales manager for one of the country's largest utility companies. His ultimate goal is to compete against the best athletes in the world at The Olympia. Hayley Perry is an IFBB Pro Woman's Physique, she started to fall in love with weight training and competed in her first bodybuilding competition in 2014 in the Bikini Division. She transitioned to Figure, and then finally the Women's Physique Division in 2019. Laurin Conlin is back on Iron Culture after a long hiatus! For those who missed her first appearance, Laurin Conlin, MS is a coach and high-level competitor, having competed as an IFBB Pro Bikini athlete from 2014-2018. She recently visited Eric before they flew to Melbourne to present at the annual Ultimate Evidence Based Conference at JPS Health & Fitness. In her and Eric's conversations in and around the event, they discussed “the competitor trap”; the unique atmosphere and culture in the NPC and IFBB that seems to encourage bikini competitors specifically to compete annually, stay lean, and in many cases work with coaching teams with bad reputations. Why does this happen, and what are the consequences? Tune in to find out!

For episode 6, we have Team ProCoach coach and educator, Ross Byrne with an incredible foundational discussion into PED use for females, with a specific look at the bikini division. In this episode, Ross covers:- What PEDs are generally used for and by females in the sport.- Considerations as to which compounds are appropriate to use and discusses the impact these can have subject to dose and duration of exposure.- The bikini look now vs then and how PEDs may have contributed to that look.- Red flags around PED use.and loads more! This discussion is subjective and NOT prescriptive and should not be used as a basis to embark on engagement with PEDs. It's intended to educate you on the risks that may be involved in making a decision about usage of PEDs and to give you the tools to ensure you are as informed as practically possible, if that decision is something you wish to make.We hope it provides the insight and value intended: we certainly took so much away from this conversation!Don't forget to follow Ross on Instagram @ross_teamprocoach and @thebackstagebikinipodcast for more episodes dropping all over Christmas!Thank you as always for your support and for tuning in

Why was he a man on a mission? He had just lost in the two events at the Olympic trials and was not going to represent the USA at the Olympics in 2000. That failure motivated him not just as a freshman at Texas but for the next four years. In the four years between 2000 - 2004, he would become the fastest breaststroker in the world and break the world record in the 100m and 200m events. In this interview, Mindset Forge host Barton and Brendan discuss how failures can be so motivating, how when he was surrounded by elite swimmers at the University of Texas it brought the best out of him and how we can do that in our own lives to bring the best out of ourselves. And finally, he talks about how the culture of a great team can be the secret sauce that helps everyone level up to their maximum potential because of peer to peer accountability.Established MindsetFrom childhood, the concept of failure was already known to Brendan. He got used to failure quickly because he hung out with his brother's friends, who are three years older than he is. His parents would describe his mindset as very much like the underdog. So when Brendan got into swimming, he quickly pushed his capabilities to the limit. He had an excellent developmental coach who was there to make every failure a learning opportunity. Whenever Brendan does something wrong, his coach would pull him to the side and tell him how to do it correctly. Having this foundation of mindset was what made Brendan ready to take head-on whatever challenge there is. Being told that he is going to fail his way to success was perceived positively rather than negatively. Jeremy was an early adopter of CrossFit back in 2005 and began his journey as a coach and CrossFit Games competitor from 2007 - 2015 and an individual and on a team. He is married with three kids and he and his sister own CrossFit Central in Austin, TX. In 2005 Jeremy was introduced to the sport of CrossFit his good friend and Marine, Lance Cantu. Immediately, he knew he had discovered the path he had been seeking since he first started training. This was not just a game he was going to play, but something he was going take part in that would effect positive change on a large scale. Naturally he dove in head first.Motivated by results, Jeremy felt the best way to learn was through action. Action, hard work, dedication, and discipline were the tools he utilized to take $500 and build a million dollar garage gym facility, CrossFit Central, in less than three years. He built from the ground up. In 2005 Jeremy along with his sister Carey started by running boot camps in parks all around Austin. He worked from his one bedroom apartment day in and day out blogging, emailing and programming; strong relationships sprouted out of his emphasis on the importance of being heavily involved in the Austin fitness community. Jeremy laid the foundation for his future by hiring a strong team; coupling his drive with people who were passionate about CrossFit and dedicated to the company's vision. For more Info about Jeremy Thiel, follow him on Instagram @thieljeremyFor a link to all his activities including CrossFit Central and the Fittest Experience, check out http://www.linktr.ee/thieljeremyFor more information about training with Barton, contact him at: Instagram @bartonguybryan Email Barton: bgbryan@gmail.com Want to support the Mindset Forge Podcast by tipping three bucks a month?$3 / month (Donor Level) --> https://themindsetforge.supercast.comFor Personalized Fitness Coaching, email Barton directly to set up a free 30 minute Consultation with him. In this episode, Kaite interviews Chelsea Kuzel, a Bodybuilding competitor in the Bikini Division, group fitness coach, and personal trainer. Chelsea breaks down how she prepares for competitions, how she maintains motivation and consistency, and even provides some personal notes and insights about her own journey in health and fitness.
In this week’s episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down with IFBB Bikini Pro and Coach Jessica Dolias. As a certified holistic nutritionist, Jessica shares insight on how holistic nutrition has helped her own mindset and relationship with food and how she passes this insight on to her own clients. Jessica stresses the importance of eating foods that make you feel whole, both mentally and physically, instead of cutting things out of your diet. As Jessica shares how her interest in holistic nutrition began, she dives into her past with disordered eating. She talks about how the numbers she constantly chased (the scale, the macros, the calories) had negative effects on her body image and her eating style. Jessica explains about the moment she recognized that something had to change in her current lifestyle as she noticed the lifelessness in her own reflection. Jessica proudly discusses how she worked through her recovery by herself and how her mentality made a shift from focusing on eating as little as possible to instead focusing on eating healthy. Although this shift has been made, Jessica talks about how it wasn’t an instant shift. She talks about how although she has been recovered for 10 years, she still finds herself dealing with disorder thinking and shares some of her best advice to competitors who may be going through what she has in the past. As the episode progresses, Jessica talks about her career and her education. When she lost her job due to her company shutting down, Jessica decided to seize the opportunity to start her own business so she would be able to pursue her dream, training clients and becoming a coach for Bombshell Fitness. She shares how her background in dance has aided her to becoming a posing queen, with one judge giving her the feedback that when she is on stage posing, she “lights up the room”. Like many of us, Jessica has had to make adaptation in the recent months due to quarantine. She shares how her unorthodox gym has helped create a new passion and drive for the sport. While she’s squatting with tree trunks she recognized that the quarantine only reinforced her passion because although the circumstances have changed, the excitement for the sport has only grown. Finally, Jessica shares her own journey to the stage. As she fought her way to the top through 10 shows, three of which were national levels, she shares how important it was for her journey to get a “less than optimal” placing. Her 16th place at her first national show made her realize how badly she wanted to push harder to earn her pro card. She also talks about how important it was for her own journey to be involved in the industry outside of her own training and coaching. She talks about the passion she has developed for the sport in things such as working with the tanning company and expediting the stage. She shares how important it was for her to take her competing career to the next level by working behind the scenes. In this insightful and powerful episode, Jessica reinforces the importance of building a life that competing fits into and visualizing your way to success. Choosing foods based on what she likes and what will help her build the physique she wants [13:20] Recognizing the Goal Value of the Food (i.e. enjoying a part of life that isn’t focused on how it’s going to help you change) [14:14] when she realized she had “come out the other side” of the eating disorder It wasn’t instant, it took years to get to a point to where those thoughts don’t creep in and they still do try to creep in, 10 years later. It took YEARS to get to the point where she was feeling good about her eating choices. First ~3 years it was a constant battle, recovering from that on your own is so difficult You HAVE TO give yourself grace Don’t know of anyone that has recovered and has been able to instantly change their mindset about it. You have to be able to have a rational conversation with your thoughts about what you really want This is a daily, hourly, by the minute decision to change. [17:09] full recovery is possible but you have to be prepared to handle these thoughts and give yourself grace [17:43] Importance for competitors to be mindful with their relationship with food Competing is so regimented that negative relationships can creep back in There is a fine line between having a good relationship with food and competing, you have to be able to disconnect yourself from the regimen and not let it control your life YOU ARE CHOOSING TO DO THIS AND YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER IT, IT DOESN’T HAVE CONTROL OVER YOU Once you can learn what you need and are able to communicate it with your coach you’ll be able to choose your relationship with food is [20:49] reinforcing healthy behaviors and thought patterns Learning from experience, how to eat well, fuel yourself well, looking at your fitness as an overall picture as opposed to just the eating or just the training What you fuel yourself impacts everything, your emotion, your decision making, your energy You are free to be fit and free to be healthy. [23:21] don’t forget about the passion, love, fulfillment and lessons that comes with competing [23:35] being mentally prepared to commit to competing Girls have to already have a decent relationship with food, yo-yo dieters or those fresh out of an eating disorder are likely not ready for an eating disorder. Not about pushing people to the stage if they’re not ready for it. If you’re not read for it, it can be so discouraging. Best factors: You enjoy training, you are an athlete, you like competition, not seeing competing as a diet or to reach a certain weight [26:31] the journey to becoming a coach Bombshell fitness coach Started competing in 2015 doing her own prep, was inspired by the bombshell athletes. Started as an athlete after her first show, it’s a powerful sisterhood that takes an individual sport and turns it into a team thing. Visualize herself being a bombshell coach. Lost her job when company closed in 2016 so she ended up opening her own computer programming business to help pay the bills while she was starting her own personal training business, what she was doing when she turned pro Dream to turn pro and dream to work for bombshell BECAME A PRO July 2017 Started working with bombshell as a posing coach, then asked her to be a coach [31:42] Her own computer programming business Certified programmer, is a service provider for her business, program “smart home” systems and design graphics for it [33:03] degree from FIT (fashion institute technology) Moved to manhattan to earn the degree, wanted to be a professional dancer, injured herself in high school and it helped her see things she enjoyed beyond dance [35:00] does the background of dance help with bodybuilding 1000%, reason for starting competing was because she missed being on stage, when she got into weight training she was able to combine her love for the stage with the love for weight training Dance background helped a lot with posing, it’s a forte of hers because it comes naturally with her dance history. [36:59] Feedback from judges Been told her posing is great and when she’s on stage posing she “lights up the room” with it. Been working on building up legs, has built her glutes up way too much and her glutes overpower her legs and shoulders (upper body width) [38:40] one exercise for shoulders, glutes and hamstrings Shoulders: lateral raises Hamstrings: sumo deadlifts Glutes: reverse lunges, but if she was doing heavy glute training, she would pick hip thrusts [40:21] changing her diet/training to evolve with the bikini division Focuses on going heavier “old school” training for heavy compound lifts, i.e. squats, deadlifts, presses Higher reps, heavy weight Eating a lot, more food volume Everyone should have a different approach because all of our bodies are different [43:44] Prep under lockdown No access to gym, hasn’t been in five months ☹ This has been her best/favorite prep yet Training at home has allowed her to focus more Unorthodox gym Bench, dumbbell, squat racks, husband cut down some trees and she is literally squatting with tree trunks, a pulley system made with cinder blocks Reinforced her passion for the sport because she feels able to still prep for the sow under these unknown circumstances, this was a “blessing in disguise” for her competitive journey [47:57] maintaining a commitment to the sport for 5 years without wavering Loves it that much Sees her own athletes go through ups and downs, You have to power through it and it takes years to get there, before you hit your “normal”. You have to be patient with yourself because you are completely changing your lifestyle and your mind doesn’t change overnight. [51:30] Journey to IFBB pro 10 shows, 3 national shows [51:45] most memorable part of journey to IFBB pro Got 16th place in her first national show, it made her realize how much she wanted to push and had to work harder to earn that spot Developed a new approach, mindset going into next year (2017) Got overall in two prestigious NPC shows and rode that high into NPC Universe Everything felt “right”, it felt like her time [53:48] experience of winning the overall at NPC Universe Most overwhelming feeling of chills/butterflies, thinks she cried but isn’t sure When having a bad day she visualizes that experience and brings herself back there Surpassed what she dreamed of happening [55:29] “Leveling Up”, what her new goal/accomplishment is Placing at a pro show, earn points Make it to Olympia (I don’t care how long it takes I want to make it happen) [56:23] support of her husband in competing [57:20] using shows as a reason to travel together [58:20] Pets and easing into the farm life Importance of Food Relationship Making Dreams Reality Ways to get Involved in the Industry [59:37] and the impact in the experience as a competitor and coach Work with tanning company, expedite the stage, takes it to the next level to be behind the scenes as well as on the stage [1:01:34] Best advice for one who isn’t competing but thinking about it and road to pro Never competed: look into getting a coach who is involved in the industry and understands it. They’ll help you prep better and if they understand the industry they’ll know what the industry is looking for Looking to go pro: keep going, if it means that much to you, do not give up, don’t live or die by the win of each show.
IFBB's NSW State Champion for the Bikini Division, Sophia Hayes chats about Performance Enhancing Drugs, maintaining results and juggling personal goals with a busy life schedule.
Episode 48 dives into how to get judge's feedback and also how to utilize that knowledge to improve. Other topics discussed are the differences between the conditioning and muscular development in the NPC regional level (National Qualifiers) and the National (IFBB Pro Qualifiers). Bikini Coaches IFBB Pro Chris Nicole and Amy Ehinger define the NPC and IFBB Professional League Wellness Division rules and regulations for posing and competitions for next year 2020. The Wellness Division is for females with athletic physique’s that showcase more body mass in the hips, glutes and thigh areas. The upper body is developed but not to the same degree as the lower body. As for posing and presentation: Front: Competitors will face front with one hand on hip, one arm straight down and one leg slightly extended. We do not want to see the arm off to side with the elbow bent and the wrist bent upwards. Quarter turn Right:Competitors will turn slightly facing the judges with right hand on hip and left arm straight down and right leg bent at knee. More like a twisting side pose that Bikini competitors perform. We do not want to see the arm off to side with the elbow bent and the wrist bent upwards. A lifelong athlete, Lauren quickly fell in love and found success in the Bikini Division of bodybuilding. She quickly rose to elite status and competed for two years as an IFBB Pro, competing both years at the prestigious Olympia. Lauren’s passion for health and fitness was a driving force behind coaching, however, she recognized a need for change within the industry to promote true and sustainable health for both competitors and lifestyle clients. Lauren believes health is a term comprised of many facets. She measures true health by things that cannot be measured on the scale and her coaching incorporates mind, body and soul. Her philosophy is, “the best diet is the diet you can adhere to. This is about creating a sustainable lifestyle, not a quick fix. The less you restrict yourself and the more you include, the more successful you will be. I love watching clients become so empowered through nutrition that it creates a ripple effect and extends to other areas of their life. Diet is so much more than what we put in our mouths, it’s what we put between our ears too. In today's podcast episode: Lauren's experience at a silent retreat “Diet is so much more than what we put in our mouths, it’s what we put between our ears too.” - What does this mean?
