Hij bouwde zijn bedrijf Yune in veertien jaar tijd uit tot succesvol video- en contentmarketing bureau en wilde het even helemaal anders gaan doen na de overname door IPG Mediabrands. Hij kwam toch bij zijn vertrouwde metier uit: verhalen vertellen. Met zijn nieuwe onderneming Next Episode zet hij zijn eerste stappen in de wereld van podcasts en het enthousiasme is aanstekelijk. Meet Johnny Yune, godfather of Korean stand-up comedy in this miniprogram. The name may not ring an immediate bell, but if you watched the Tonight Show in the late 70s and early 1980s, caught any of a number of variety shows from that era, or had a thing for Kung Fu parody flicks, you know his comedy. An extended first set on the Tonight Show back in 1979 (Charlton Heston was late!) was Yune's big break and he made the most of it, eventually hosting his own Americanized talk show in Korea and a local talk fest in LA. Da Yune præsenterede nummeret ’Low’, fik de at vide det lød som melankolsk Aarhus-funk. En meget pudsig betegnelse for et udtryk der også har prædikatet ”indie”. Indie er for kvintetten en passende betegnelse for deres musik fordi det på en måde er udefinerbart. Måske derfor passede det også godt med at have den marokkanske ørken som det tomme iscenesættende rum for pladens visuelle identitet. Might early hearing impairment lead to cognitive challenges later in life? Yune Lee from the Ohio State University talks with us about his research into how even minor hearing loss can increase the cognitive load required to distinguish spoken language.

Video's maakte Pablo van den Berg al in 2007,  een tijd dat Facebook nog niet in Nederland bestond en YouTube nog nieuw was: ‘Wij moesten een soort van evangelie verkopen aan de hand van drie slides op Powerpoint, dat was natuurlijk heel lastig. Later heeft die term video veel meer kracht gekregen. We moesten concurreren tegen televisie en de traditionele reclame, dat was wel spannend.'Ondertussen is Yune succesvol verkocht aan mediabedrijf Interpublic, vooral vanwege de wens om een stap verder te kunnen zetten: ‘Wat voor ons steeds belangrijker werd is toch die kennis van data en hoe je daar steeds intelligenter mee je propositie kan verstevigen. Dus niet alleen maar leuke content maken en bedenken maar het ook nog op een slimme manier uiteindelijk bij de consument krijgen.'Hoger niveauYune groeide sinds de overname ruim 30%. Van den Berg: ‘Dat bewijst alleen maar dat we een goede keuze hebben gemaakt en dat we geloven dat dit ons in de nabije toekomst een hele goede positie geeft.' De managing director gaat graag door met professionaliseren: ‘Wij zijn een soort van hoofdredacteur van een merk. Ze hebben zoveel kanalen te vullen met content en wij zitten er tussen. Iedereen blijft toch een beetje als een zender acteren en wij filteren dat. Dat spel, en de manier van handelen en de snelheid daarvan, dat doen we heel goed en dat kunnen we nog naar een veel hoger niveau brengen binnen die Mediabrands group waar we in zitten.'Gezonde concurrentieDe concurrentie in de markt is groot, maar Van den Berg denkt dat het alleen maar gezond werkt als er meer spelers zijn: ‘Je ziet ook dat je er zelf scherper van wordt. Het krijgt steeds meer aandacht, ook bij onze klanten en je leert ook weer van anderen. Met positieve jaloezie kijk ik naar wat concurrenten maken, en dat vind ik alleen maar mooi.' Hij weet hoe moeilijk het is om een idee te pitchen: ‘Een goed idee is lachen, maar krijg het maar eens gerealiseerd bij een klant, krijg er daar maar eens budget voor en stap drie: dan moet het ook nog een succes zijn. Dat is een waanzinnig moeilijk proces.'

After high school, Karl successfully started and sold an internet based consulting business and was accepted to Columbia University as a business major. His studying and love of Shakespeare during a literature course influenced him to switch his major to theater at the University's School of the Arts. While at Columbia, Yune won the role of Romeo in an off Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet and was later signed to a talent manager. Karl continued to work as a theater actor in New York City and won critical and rave reviews for his performance as Gloucester in a contemporary rendition of Shakespeare's Richard the III. While casting The Last Samurai, director Edward Zwick was impressed with Yune's audition tape and Karl went to Los Angeles for the first time to meet with the famed director. Zwick later informed Karl that the studio was to cast the film out of Japan, but encouraged Karl to move to Los Angeles as he saw promise in the young actor's talent. Inspired, Karl moved to Los Angeles, only to learn that he was offered a five year contract back in New York, on the popular daytime TV drama All My Children. Yune passed on the offer and soon booked his first lead role in the cult film Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid. The following year Karl was picked by producer Steven Spielberg to play the memorable role of Koichi, the secret lover to Li Gong's Geisha Hatsumomo, in Memoirs of a Geisha, based on the international best-selling novel. Karl continued to work in lead and supporting roles in award winning independent, foreign, and Hollywood films. In 2010, Karl was again chosen by producer Steven Spielberg and director Shawn Levy to star as Tak Mashido, the reclusive legend of the robot fighting world in the sci-fi drama Real Steel.
