Drs. Bass and Edinger break down what a facelift can and can't do. Facelifts are great for tightening loose skin, lifting jowls, and restoring volume in the face and neck—helping you look more refreshed and youthful. But they don't address everything. Wrinkles, sun damage, and changes around the eyes and brows usually need other treatments. There's a big difference between how facelifts are described online and how surgeons talk about them. The doctors break down that language gap so you know what those buzzwords actually mean. Bottom line: A facelift is the gold standard for sagging skin, but knowing its limits is key to getting natural-looking results. Find out who's a good candidate for a facelift, how long the results typically last, and whether combining it with other procedures might give you the outcome you're really looking for. Welcome to today's episode of our podcast! We're thrilled to bring you insights from a recent session with Dr. Karthik Ram, a renowned expert in aesthetic and plastic surgery. Dr. Ram, along with his team, provides top-tier care and is always available to address your concerns and clarify any doubts. In this session, he discussed a wide range of topics, from non-surgical treatments to complex surgical procedures. Let's dive right into the highlights! 1. Double Chin Correction with VASER Dr. Ram kicked off the session by discussing double chin correction. He explained how VASER technology helps in contouring and defining the chin area. VASER, a minimally invasive technique, uses ultrasound energy to break down fat, providing a more sculpted jawline without the need for extensive recovery. 2. Forehead Scar Treatments Next, he addressed concerns about forehead scars. Dr. Ram highlighted various treatment options, including laser therapies and specific scar revision procedures, to help improve the appearance of scarring and provide smoother skin. 3. Tummy Tuck (Mommy Makeover) One of the most common concerns he addressed was the tummy tuck or mommy makeover. He explained the entire process, including pre-operative care, the surgery itself, and post-op care. This procedure is especially beneficial for women after pregnancy, helping to restore abdominal contours and tighten skin. 4. Droopy Eyes – Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty & Brow Lifts For those struggling with droopy eyes, Dr. Ram shared his expertise on upper eyelid blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and brow lifts. These surgeries help rejuvenate the eyes, restore youthful appearance, and eliminate the tired, sagging look caused by aging or genetics. 5. Under-Eye Dark Circles Dr. Ram suggested a combination of fillers, fat transfer, and lower eyelid blepharoplasty as the best treatments for under-eye dark circles. These solutions can help restore volume and smoothness to the delicate under-eye area, offering a refreshed and well-rested look. 6. Breast Reduction & Gynecomastia Dr. Ram also addressed breast reduction concerns, particularly single-sided gynecomastia. He discussed both surgical and non-surgical options to improve breast symmetry and reduce excess tissue, providing patients with more confidence and comfort. 7. Nose Appearance While Smiling A common issue for many patients is the appearance of the nose when smiling. Dr. Ram provided solutions, discussing both surgical and non-surgical options to correct this issue and enhance facial harmony. 8. Fat Transfer for Upper Eyelids & Chin Implants Another popular topic was fat transfer for the upper eyelids. Dr. Ram explained how transferring fat from other parts of the body can restore volume to the eyelids, creating a more youthful appearance. He also talked about chin implants, a procedure that can improve facial balance and enhance the profile. 9. Skin Pigmentation & Sagging Skin Post-Gynecomastia Dr. Ram emphasized CO2 laser treatments for skin pigmentation issues and shared insights into addressing sagging skin post-gynecomastia surgery. He reassured patients that there are solutions available for these challenges, ensuring smoother, tighter skin post-surgery. 10. Keloid Treatment on Chest Chest keloids can be tricky to treat, but Dr. Ram discussed various options for managing and improving their appearance, ensuring that patients are aware of all their treatment options. 11. Lipedema Treatment & Non-Surgical Saddle Bag Solutions For patients concerned about lipedema or stubborn saddle bags, Dr. Ram went over treatment methods, including both surgical and non-surgical solutions to help reduce fat deposits in the thighs and legs, and achieve a more sculpted appearance. 12. Botox for Masseter Muscle Dr. Ram also provided clarity on Botox treatments for the masseter muscle. He explained how repeated Botox treatments can help address jawline concerns, reduce teeth grinding, and enhance facial symmetry. 13. Rhinoplasty Recovery & Brow Lift Complications Rhinoplasty recovery can be challenging, but Dr. Ram offered tips on recovery timelines and complications to watch out for. Additionally, he discussed potential issues and complications that can arise from a brow lift and how to manage them effectively.

No two faces are the same, so no two face lifts should be the same. Each procedure should be carefully customized to  individual facial features. Face lifts have come a long way. In the beginning, doctors simply tightened the skin. In the 1970s, they discovered that lifting and repositioning the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, called the SMAS, gave much better, longer-lasting results. In the 1990s, Dr. Sam Hamra popularized an alternative approach called the deep plane face lift. This approach treats the skin and deeper layers together. For people in their 70's, Dr. Bass shares the surgical and non-surgical treatments you may want to consider, highlighting how beauty plans have changed in the last few decades. Many people do a major facial “reset” during their late 50's or early 60's. By the 70's, it may be the last chance to do something major to improve facial appearance. Sometimes this is a first facelift and other times a secondary or repeat facelift if enough aging has taken place since the first procedure.  Surgery may not be right for everyone in their 70's depending on health, and current aesthetic needs.  Surgical and non-surgical approaches can yield big results, but there may be some limitations due to loss of skin elasticity. Maintenance, prevention and restoration don't stop at this stage. Non-surgical treatments can still make a difference in your 70's, but you'll need to invest more time and effort than you did in your 50's or 60's. Men get cosmetic treatments, too. Dr. Bass reveals the most popular aesthetic procedures for men who want to look and feel their best. As it's not as socially acceptable for men to modify their appearance, they tend to opt for procedures that give them natural results and virtually unnoticeable scars, such as eyelid surgery. To enhance their masculine features, many younger men go for chin and cheek implants or body contouring around their chest and abs. Men focus less on skin care and recurrent treatments, and more on the "one and done” procedures. Facelift surgery has come a long way since the 1980's, amplifying the degree of correction and preserving a natural look. Dr. Sherrell Aston, a leader in facelifting, joins Dr. Bass to discuss the evolution of facelift techniques and how they are customized to each patient. In the last 40 years, the focus has moved from lifting the skin to altering the underlying foundation, removing excess skin, and redraping over a changed foundation in the face, cheeks, neck, and jawline.  Today, the facelift is often combined with other treatments for well-rounded, dramatic, long-lasting results. It can be complemented with fat transfer into areas of the face with lost volume, or radio frequency technology such as FaceTite or AccuTite or Morpheus8 to improve the quality of skin. While the facelift/necklift is the gold standard for facial rejuvenation, there's not a single best technique for how that procedure is performed.  The approach is customized to every patient not cookie cutter. Hear about current controversies in facelift technique from the experts. Learn more about the various facelift techniques Drs. Although relatively small, the eyes are the first area of the face to show changes, and have a big impact on one's appearance.  When considering which procedure to have for the eyes, first identify your specific concerns: is it volume loss, crepiness underneath the eyes, crow's feet, low brow position, or fat bulging causing bags beneath the eyes? There's no meaningful substitute for eyelid surgery, but non-surgical treatments are useful for certain concerns around the eyes. Botox and fillers, for example, can raise the brow and treat crow's feet and frown lines, and chemical peels can treat crepiness around the eyes. But when you notice the upper eyelid skin hooding, a lower brow position, or bulging fat pads, it's time for a surgical approach. Our obsession with keeping up appearances is nothing new, but we're officially in a "compare and despair" era now. Humanity's fixation on the beauty industry, which is estimated to be worth $800 billion by 2025, has brought us to a point where aesthetic standards have the power to completely shape our inner worth. If our emotional, mental and spiritual well-being suffocates for the sake of maintaining a glamorous facade, what's the real cost? It's time to go beneath the surface — and we don't mean botox (but we're pro-botox, too). We're transcending the shallow definition of beauty and exploring the interconnectedness of inner and outer radiance.Co-hosts Megan Lund and Ryan Marquardt embark on a captivating conversation with Mikaela MacLean, an Auric Aesthetician and  founder of Energetic Aesthetics & Beauty Sleep Reiki. Mikaela focused on physical healing for 20+ years as a medical aesthetician, and now she's working with spiritual healing modalities, bringing her energetic gifts and wisdom the material world. She's become a powerful voice in the realm of holistic beauty and opens up in this episode about the delicate balance between materiality and spirituality. This episode aims to help you redefine beauty as an energetic expression of the soul, one that goes beyond our conditioning, capitalistic pressures, and social media expectations. The liberating truth is that beauty isn't merely a superficial concept. It isn't found in the aisles of a department store, or sitting in a salon chair, or hiding under a surgeon's scalpel. A Primer on Potential Uses of Stem Cells in Plastic Surgery w/ Dr. Steve Cohen

To bring us into the future of stem cells in aesthetics, regenerative medicine pioneer Dr. Steve Cohen joins Dr. Bass for a conversation about the future of this innovative area of medicine.  Because stem cells are not fully differentiated, they have the ability to turn into a muscle cell, a skin cell, or a blood vessel lining cell. This versatility allows them to be used in plastic surgery, where benefits include improving blood supply, making new blood supply, reducing inflammation, and repairing tissue, to name a few. In the future, stem cells might be used for such applications as rehabilitating the tissue during breast reconstruction before putting a breast implant in, healing or reversing radiated tissue in head and neck cancer patients, or in combination with laser treatments for the best possible skin resurfacing results.  Dr. Cohen and Dr. Bass share how stem cells can be incorporated today to get ideal results and how they might help reduce the complexity of procedures and increase longevity of results in the future.   About Steve Cohen, MD Dr. Steve Cohen is a San Diego-based and internationally recognized plastic surgeon, inventor, author, artist, and founder of FACES+. Once you decide to go forward with facelift surgery, there are a few more important decisions to make. Dr. Bass teams up with facial plastic surgeon, friend, and colleague, Dr. Jason Bloom to guide you through each of these key decisions in the facelift journey.  Many people need other procedures in conjunction with a facelift or necklift, but are unaware of what other procedures may need to be added. If you make the mistake of leaving an obvious aging feature untreated, you'll end up getting another procedure in the near future, necessitating another OR fee and recovery period.  Find out what a facelift can and cannot accomplish, which features typically need separate facial rejuvenation procedures, and at which point it becomes too much for one day and you will need to return for additional procedures. Hear Dr. Bass and Dr. Bloom's wise advice about what to look for and how to find and choose a surgeon whose artistry and style of facelift aligns with your vision. Collagen and fat in the face disappear over time, and once menopause hits, aging causes facial bone loss. Luckily, Sculptra can improve all three of the effects of facial aging. LJC's Amy Biggs, PA-C, joins us to explain what Sculptra is, how it is different from other fillers, and its many benefits. Along with some instant gratification as it restores lost volume, it continues to stimulate collagen over time and improve skin quality. Hyaluronic acid fillers break down over time, while Sculptra leaves you with new collagen once it disappears. After about 8-12 weeks, you'll see the subtle, natural end result of your Sculptra treatment. If you can't wait to see results but want the benefits of Sculptra, you can get hyaluronic acid fillers and come back in 3-6 months and get Sculptra. Sculptra isn't only applicable for your facial cheeks, but can also be used for the cheeks on the lower half of your body to add volume, improve skin quality, and smooth out cellulite. Fat Transfer vs. Fillers: How to Choose

LJC facial plastic surgeon Dr. Kiersten Riedler outlines everything you need to know about facial fat transfer and injectable fillers. If volume loss in your face is starting to show your age and you're exploring solutions to reverse it, the best method for restoring volume depends on your anatomy, age, and goals. For anyone wanting a permanent increase in facial volume along with some improvement in the quality of the skin, fat transfer is an excellent long-lasting option. If you're wanting short recovery time and improved structure of your lips or nose, hyaluronic acid fillers are a great trial run to see how much volume suits your goals before committing to a more permanent solution. Sculptra is another non surgical option for adding volume to your face. Rather than simply filling in hollow areas like hyaluronic acid filler, it stimulates collagen growth while restoring volume.
