Alfonso Ussía pudo haber sido un zángano del barrio de Salamanca, pero eligió trabajar duro para algún día -vana ilusión- no tener que trabajar. Su adolescencia fueron recuerdos de larguísimos veraneos en San Sebastián, con canciones de Jacques Brel como música de fondo, jersey sobre los hombros y pellizcos a traición a la novia, propia o ajena. En San Sebastián, Ussía jugaba al tenis con una chica rubia, a la que llamaban Hoppy, que de mayor sería presidenta de Madrid, y al fútbol en la playa con un atormentado niño bien, al que apodó Pertur, y que años después ingresaría en ETA para no salir ya vivo. Su primer trabajo en prensa fue a las órdenes de Janli Cebrián. En los servicios de documentación de ‘Informaciones', Ussía coincidió con los entonces también jovencísimos María Antonia Iglesias, José Luis Martín Prieto, Víctor de la Serna y Jimmy Giménez Arnau. Su debut en el periodismo literario vino de la mano de Antonio Gala, que lo llevó a 'Sábado Gráfico'. Fue en el despacho del editor, Eugenio Suárez, donde una bala por poco le perfora la oreja a Ussía; no fue culpa de la bala, sino de la oreja. De ‘Sábado Gráfico' la pluma de Alfonso voló como un mosquito -como un tábano- por otras redacciones, hasta aterrizar en la de ‘ABC'. Allí firmó durante años. Luego, en ‘La Razón', de donde salió aparatosamente. Que al hombre no le gusta que le toquen ni una coma.
