The story we tell ourselves and others contributes to how we both serve and set direction. **This is a rerun of episode 27 originally released DEC 15, 2019 ** In this episode Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano are joined by special guest Roxanne Kaufman Eliot to discuss a breadth of topics contributing to the character of leadership. Key to the theme is the distinction between leadership and management - a discussion robustly supplemented with a number of supporting themes, importantly self-awareness and self-development. The not-so-new...ab...normal...normal? Since COVID-19 first rocked the world more than two years ago, leaders and the businesses they work in have gone through all sorts of changes. First there was the two week flatten the curve hiccup, then the longer-haul new normal, then a newer normal, then the new abnormal - and so on. Some writers have even compared the changes of the past few years to going through all the psychological stages of grief. One thing is certain, none of this is quite normal at all. Which naturally raises the question: Does leadership need to change with the times, or is it a constant on which all other changes can stand? In this latest episode, Brian, Nick, and Jon talk about what's changed for leaders, and what hasn't, over the past two years.
**This is a rerun of episode 27 originally released 4/1/20 ** Going the opposite direction of human nature should be easy, right? Not if you're human, unfortunately. As it turns out, it's oftentimes a greater advantage for us to do so if we are to make level-headed choices rather than succumbing to the heat of the moment. How we properly identify those moments is a key facet for effective leadership to guide through chaotic wrinkles of adversity, when the stakes are highest - like in a global pandemic disaster scenario. In this episode, Dr. Gleb Tsipursky joins co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano in conversation to walk us through some of the techniques to gain the self awareness necessary for a good gut-check, and to acquire the ability to reprogram your own mind or your own reactions to achieve optimal results.
In this episode of Lead.exe, Brian, Nick, and Jon are joined by friends of the show Peter Margaritis and Roxanne Kaufman Elliott to discuss Peter's new book Off Script: Mastering the Art of Business Improv. The conversation includes the "yes and" approach to leadership, some practical tips for leaders at any level, and of course no shortage of amusing anecdotes from Peter and Roxanne.
Web3, as explained by special guest David Campbell, promotes both the irrevocable commitment of an immutable framework, and also the financial incentive to behave honestly via the Bitcoin protocol. In this wide-ranging conversation, Nick, Brian, and Jon explore the differences between efficiency and effectiveness and the different situations that may require leaders to adjust their focus between the two. If you've ever found yourself at a crossroads between quality and quantity, deadlines and details, or are interested on getting the best of both worlds, this episode is for you.
In his discussion with co-hosts Brian Comerford & Nick Lozano, Brett shares his views on how Agile process - when done correctly - aligns with the military's disciplined method of plan, brief, execute, debrief (PBED). Perhaps most important is the one step most often skipped: the debrief (in Agile, called the retrospective). This is the phase where genuine root cause analysis openly scrutinizes performance details and exposes the areas where improvement is needed. Taking command of this discipline lays a strong foundation for defining who leaders are from what leaders do - discussed at length during the second part of the program where the three different kinds of power are also defined.
Whatever the case, co-hosts Brian Comerford & Nick Lozano hash-out their own definitions of "innovation," inclusive of myriad examples, influencers, resources, and even discussion around a popular classification of 4 categories of innovation types. If you find yourself saddled with the word "innovation" in your title or job description, or even if you're just looking for some outside perspective on what it can mean, this may be an episode worth tuning in to.
Given that end-of-year is often a time of resolutions, the duo discuss how the critical leadership skill of self-awareness can extend throughout the year with personal strategies for self-development. Met with the discipline of action, gaining enough mastery of these behavioral or habitual life changes contribute strongly to furthering mentorship with those you may lead. And with so many 'virtual-mentorship' opportunities now available online, even via podcasts like this one, there is no time for self-improvement like the present.
Or so the discussion goes when co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano explore the topic of "EX", an occasionally-overlooked but equally important counterpart to CX (Customer Experience). Because EX should be a strategic pillar, more than a corporate objectives checkbox, perhaps made more crucial in the post-pandemic workforce when prospective employees seemingly have so many flexible choices within their grasp. If leadership is defined in part by the amount of followership it commands, would you still choose to work at your company today if you were applying for a job - or would you even apply? Tune in to this episode to learn more.
Leaders must be prepared, even for the unforeseen. This is the origin of business continuity and disaster recovery plans, and for the most forward-thinking, disaster avoidance planning. Author Lance Mortlock takes it a step further with his book "Disaster Proof: Scenario Planning for a Post-Pandemic Future". As a strategy partner with Ernst & Young (EY), Lance shares his expertise with co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano as they discuss leadership principles to develop a team, formulate a strategy, and take that ideation into action. Lance discusses his theories and his insights, and takes it a step further to demonstrate how his model can actually be produced in a real world environment, outside of academia.Lance Mortlockhttps://www.lancemortlock.comLance's Book - Disaster Proofhttps://www.lancemortlock.com/bookFull show transcript available at:https://www.leadexe.com/disaster-proof-with-lance-mortlock/00:00 Show start02:03 Lance Mortlock Intro07:54 Disaster Proof12:05 Disaster recovery and business continuity plans14:56 Scenario planning20:20 Artificial Intelligence33:02 Strategy and innovation37:25 Risk management39:54 Potential Disasters45:27 Book that Lance recommends46:37 Where you can find Lance and closing

Working from Home means you can finally escape all the frustrating toxicity and micro-management of an unhealthy workplace, right? Maybe not. Join co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano as they discuss critical factors of remote work leadership - and how the responsibilities for cultivating a healthy working environment aren't exclusively on the shoulders of management. If you've been feeling additional stressors since moving your desk from the office building to the home office, tune-in for some insights about why that might be so, and how to improve the situation.

What top leadership questions do you have? Don't feel put on the spot - co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano tap into Answer the Public to create a brain-map of what questions tend to rise to the surface for key-words most commonly searched upon.
Many leaders know very well that a successful mission depends on a clear understanding of the objectives. And yet, many who find themselves in a position to lead others may discover that their style of messaging muddies the waters.
Data only becomes information once it's harnessed for insights. To do so requires more than instantiating a database and writing a few queries, as Dr. Clark Shah-Nelson explains the caveat that organizations can lose knowledge as fast as they can create it.
Whether or not your career trajectory targets a seat in the C-suite, the leadership principles that can get there remain the same. Perhaps few people know this better than Shellye Archambeau, one of Silicon Valley's first female African American CEOs, and author of "Unapologetically Ambitious." Shellye joins co-hosts Brian Comerford & Nick Lozano in discussion to define what resilience, preparedness, and setting far-reaching goals established for her in her own career trajectory. Among the many keen insights she shares, like the nature of her book, she gets personal with her story of writing, being comfortable with vulnerability, and becoming published. Filled with flashes of deep and intuitive understanding of what leadership requires, in this episode listen in as Shellye shares her inspiration that you can be a leader at any stage - in career and life. There is more to workspace than just a desk and a chair, or so says Scott Hazard, VP & Global Head of Real Estate & Workplace Experience at Atlassian. Psychology, emotions, & a sense of professionalism are also key ingredients. But perhaps the most critical factor of all, as he discusses with co-hosts Brian Comerford & Nick Lozano, is collaboration. What does it take to make an organization collaborative when it comes to workspace? How does a Zoom meeting negotiate differently than face-to-face? How can corporate leaders adequately tackle the need for clear definitions in the workplace environment as well as work-from home? This & more challenged in this episode.
When times are tough, great leaders get optimistic. You read that right! There is nothing quite like remaining calm, collected, and upbeat when the chips are down. Words matter, as does demeanor, and leading through crisis can mitigate any compounding negativity when bright spots are clearly identified, communicated and celebrated. As we wrap up what has been a dismal year for so many, co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano discuss facets of optimism that they feel are important during the worst of times, just as they are in forecasting a brighter future. The best leaders tackle what is tough, and sometimes that's finding the silver lining when it feels easier to play Chicken Little.
What do processes, products, projects and people all have in common? They each require varying degrees of quality management. Data quality, performance testing, development sprints - each of these terms tend to be incredibly familiar to leaders working in a technical environment, but tend to get pushed out of many strategic discussions because of their operational or tactical orientation. But beware overlooking the importance of these critical factors say Rozelle Cawthorn, a long-time consultant and Director of Quality and Configuration Management. He joins co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano to discuss what it takes in terms of organizational discipline, divisional leadership, and agile principles to make this tough practice happen seamlessly behind-the-scenes.00:00 Show Intro 02:55 Rozelle Cawthorn Intro 06:51 What is Quality 13:56 Trust 20:34 Agility 26:36 Sprint33:14 Communication 37:59 Commander's Intent 43:21 Recommended Books 44:25 Connect with Rozelle and Closing
Strategic planning is for some where all the fun is, and for others, an obstacle to be overcome. In this episode, co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano discuss some of their own tips for creating nimble strategy and meaningful objectives. Above it all, the theme of knowing your destination and determining the route to get there is one of the simple keystones to setting strategy.
A lot has been said about the importance of good communication - so why does it need to keep being re-stated? Apparently it's human nature to "tune-out" to listening to what others are saying, just as much as it is to "over-assume" your message is heard & understood. Join co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano as they share some of their own insights into creating communication that matters to whatever audience is on the receiving end. From quality of message content, frequency, and duration to setting expectations and establishing working agreements, this episode is all about "tuning-in" to agile principles + communication methods.Hosted By:Brian ComerfordLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/briancomerford/ Nick LozanoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-lozano/ Lead.exe is published bi-monthly on the 1st and the 15th of the month. Human-Centered Design (HCD) put - you guessed it - Humans, right at the center of the perspective in all steps of the problem-solving process. As a framework, it has served as the basis of what is now commonly called Experience Design, popularly buzz-phrased with the CX (or Client Experience) tag. So what is "Human-Centered Leadership"? For the answer to that question, join co-hosts Brian Comerford & Nick Lozano as they discuss this new leadership framework with Peter Lynch - author of "The Ugly Advantage", global TEDx speaker, and People & Culture fixer-upper. Join co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano in this special edition of >Lead.exe_ as they hit two milestones: two guests, Roxanne Kaufman Elliott and Peter Margaritis liven up the chatter at the same time the program streams live across four social media platforms. Things are at times downright giddy, and at others, serious and provocative as the four discuss the language of leadership and the utility of improv to empower flexibility in communication and decision-making. Whatever the topic - and there are a variety - these fab four are clearly having fun as they share insights valuable for leaders in any domain.
The COVID-19 pandemic has monkey-wrenched most of what anyone would call "normal". As a result, leaders of all types have been challenged with re-thinking existing standard operating procedures, both within the workplace as well as "at home" with the remote workforce. Join co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano as they discuss some of these key obstacles to getting things done according to the status quo. Budgeting for tech spend, planning for equipment procurement, and determining how to address office footprint are just a handful of topics for leadership to address. Add to that "soft costs" related to revising or establishing team working agreements, setting performance expectations, and elevating work-life flexibility, and you've got the basis for what they term "Budgeting for the New Abnormal".

The applications of 3D have only just begun. Prerequisites include developing a perspective of 3D literacy in order to utilize the data around us to effectively identify and model solution alternatives - and the right tools. "Mechanical engineers are only one fifth as productive as software engineers," says Paul Powers, Founder & CEO of Physna. As leaders in every field seek to maximize their potential and elevate employee experience, they also look to good coaches to aid them along the way. Co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano discuss these facets of Joseph's personal training practice, as well as many other components of how the brain is designed to perceive, as their MIT Mechanical Engineering grad guest shares how that pathway led him to solving 3D challenges in fitness and breathwork.Joseph GonzalezMejor Strength0:07 Opening2:00 Bio2:48 Ergo5:57 Tech Neck8:12 Workout11:56 Demands on our bodies17:55 How Joseph became The Movement Detective29:33 Trainers and anatomy36:00 How people find Joseph41:00 What's the most common thing seen?42:22 Breathwork50:28 Recommended books53:10 Where can find Joseph53:44 ClosingHosted By:Brian ComerfordLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/briancomerford/Nick LozanoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-lozano/Lead.exe is published bi-monthly on the 1st and the 15th of the month.Subscribe and leave us a review to lets us know how we are doing.Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/58U55KZykbYXJhuvtPGmgciTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/lead-exe/id1454843941Google Play: https://www.google.com/podcastsfeed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjXN0LmNvbS9QZHJGaTAzUQ%3D%3DStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/leadexeYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjPXFiYVICXJSBW-ZoHBclg
Blame Apple, Google and Amazon for the consumerization of technology. Once the tools of the Cultural Creatives and Fast Followers, the generation of Digital Natives know what works and what doesn't, so they can create in even more imaginative and better ways than the generations preceding them. As a consequence, as Ravi Krishnan discusses with co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano, today's foundational requirement for technology is the platform-based framework - where code accelerators and drag and drop pluggable solutions, in short, continue to elevate expectations that all technology behaves with the ease of... Life always presents stressors - in certain times, like during the COVID19 pandemic, far more than usual. Leaders need empathy more than ever before in order to both recognize and understand the effects of those stressors. When crises takes a toll, it's most critical for leaders to put their fingers on the pulse of their people’s energy and emotions, responding decisively, and perhaps more importantly, with genuine compassion. Commanding that self-awareness both allows leaders to demonstrate the behavior they want to see, and to provide a clear model for others to follow. U.S. Army Capt. Holly Weaver knows this well, as she speak to her theme of "The Hard Thing About Soft Skills" with co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano.0:09 Opening2:16 Captain Holly Weaver Intro23:57 Mentor26:42 Impact of mentor33:19 Challenging experience34:39 Leading vs Managing37:30 Caring44:16 Concepts of leading with empathy56:40 Recommended book1:03:11 Where can you find Captan Holly Weaver and ClosingHosted By:Brian ComerfordLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/briancomerford/Nick LozanoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-lozano/Lead.exe is published bi-monthly on the 1st and the 15th of the month.Subscribe and leave us a review to lets us know how we are doing.Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/58U55KZykbYXJhuvtPGmgciTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/lead-exe/id1454843941Google Play: https://www.google.com/podcastsfeed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjXN0LmNvbS9QZHJGaTAzUQ%3D%3DStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/leadexeYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjPXFiYVICXJSBW-ZoHBclg
"Leadership can be challenging, even during the best of times when all the stars are aligned," says Erik Therwanger, former U.S. Marine, founder of ThinkGREAT, and author of six books. During times of crisis is when leadership is most needed, but while the chaos of crisis serves as the leadership catalyst for training in the Marine Corps, it's not necessarily second-nature to those working on the front-lines of business. Co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano join Erik in conversation to discuss three key leadership traits most critical "to run into the fire" at a time when FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) is highest and level-headed guidance is most needed.Erik TherwangerFounder, Author, Speaker, CoachThink GREAT0:06 Opening1:45 Erik bio8:11 Leading in challenging times11:59 Communication16:16 Leading through chaos21:25 Skills30:45 Embrace the suck34:31 Erik's Books 37:03 Erik's recommended book38:49 Where you can find Erik39:16 ClosingHosted By:Brian ComerfordLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/briancomerford/Nick LozanoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-lozano-97356621/Lead.exe is published bi-monthly on the 1st and the 15th of the month.Subscribe and leave us a review to lets us know how we are doing.Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/58U55KZykbYXJhuvtPGmgciTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/lead-exe/id1454843941Google Play: https://www.google.com/podcastsfeed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjXN0LmNvbS9QZHJGaTAzUQ%3D%3DStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/leadexeYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjPXFiYVICXJSBW-ZoHBclgSend us your feedback at info@leadexe.com
Going the opposite direction of human nature should be easy, right? Not if you're human, unfortunately. As it turns out, it's oftentimes a greater advantage for us to do so if we are to make level-headed choices rather than succumbing to the heat of the moment. How we properly identify those moments is a key facet for effective leadership to guide through chaotic wrinkles of adversity, when the stakes are highest - like in a global pandemic disaster scenario. In this episode, Dr. Gleb Tsipursky joins co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano in conversation to walk us through some of the techniques to gain the self awareness necessary for a good gut-check, and to acquire the ability to reprogram your own mind or your own reactions to achieve optimal results.Dr. Gleb TsipurskyKnown as the Disaster Avoidance Expert, Dr. Gleb Tsipursky is on a mission to protect leaders from dangerous judgment errors known as cognitive biases by developing the most effective decision-making strategies. He has over two decades of consulting, coaching, and training experience as CEO of Disaster Avoidance Experts, and over 15 years of experience in academia as a cognitive neuroscientist and behavioral economist. Dr. Tsipursky writes for Inc. Magazine, Time, Scientific American, Fast Company, and Psychology Today. Disaster strikes - when? That's right: When you least expect it. Which is why planning is essential. It's also why technology leaders are typically the organizational role most likely to be saddled with the responsibility for creating and curating BCP/DR or DRR plans. In this episode, co-hosts Brian Comerford and Nick Lozano discuss the need for business continuity planning as well as outlining the process and providing resources to help begin this leadership challenge. It may seem like an exercise in futility, creating in-depth documentation and risk readiness planning for events you hope never happen. That is, until the day you're reliant on all of that detail-oriented work.Hosted By:Brian ComerfordLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/briancomerford/Nick LozanoLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-lozano-97356621/Twitter: https://twitter.com/NickLLozanoLead.exe is published bi-monthly on the 1st and the 15th of the month.Subscribe and leave us a review to lets us know how we are doing.Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/58U55KZykbYXJhuvtPGmgciTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/lead-exe/id1454843941Google Play: https://www.google.com/podcastsfeed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjXN0LmNvbS9QZHJGaTAzUQ%3D%3DStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/leadexeYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjPXFiYVICXJSBW-ZoHBclgSend us your feedback at info@leadexe.com
