• Leaders must change their approach, expert says • “Traditional brainstorming sessions need a serious overhaul” (Total Recorded Time is 25:38) Running a brainstorming session is a great way to explore new ideas. Leaders at all levels use this strategy to promote innovation. But how do you do it when the participants are scattered into little video squares in a Zoom meeting? Traditional brainstorming methods fail to produce valuable results in a World of Zoom and similar remote meet-ups, says leadership consultant Gleb Tsipursky. “Extensive research shows that, when it comes to innovation, hybrid and remote teams can outcompete in-person teams by adopting best practices around digital communication and collaboration,” he says. But too often, leaders reject new practices in favor of more familiar ones that simply do not work as well in a part-remote, part in-person world, he says. In today's rapidly changing world of work, “it's time to admit that traditional brainstorming sessions need a serious overhaul,” Mr. Tsipursky says. Gleb Tsipursky talks about the changes that leaders must make to be more effective in the post-COVID era in this Bizgnus Interview Podcast. Please click here to watch the interview: https://youtu.be/rtAIu4EdQa0 The larger the in-person group, the fewer novel ideas per person, whereas the opposite is true for virtual brainstorming, he says, noting that the same research finds that virtual environments provide a better experience for group members as a whole, balancing the preferences of introverts and extroverts, optimists and pessimists, and lower- and higher-status members. “In summary, virtual brainstorming is better for innovation — and for people,” says Mr. Tsipursky. Gleb Tsipursky is the author of many books and articles on leadership, including his newest book, “Returning to the Office and Leading Hybrid and Remote Teams: A Manual on Benchmarking to Best Practices for Competitive Advantage,” (August 2021, 2nd Ed.; Disaster Avoidance Experts Press.) Mr. Tsipursky, a former professor at Ohio State University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, is chief executive officer of Disaster Avoidance Experts of Columbus, Ohio, which focuses on future-proofing, decision making, and cognitive bias risk management in the future of work. “Our emotions, our intuitions, and our gut reactions will often lead us in the wrong direction,” said Dr. Gleb Tsipursky in my interview with him, recorded on Friday 27th of March 2020. Never have we ever in our lives, in this generation, at this point in time, wanted to know more about what to do, how to do it, and when will the threat of COVID-19 be over. All over the world, political leaders, scientists, health practitioners, businesses, and families, are struggling to find their feet and get a sense of direction amidst the threat of COVID-19. It is impacting our health and our economy like no other crisis we've ever seen before. In this episode, I interview Dr. Gleb Tsipursky, a disaster avoidance expert, consultant, coach, speaker, and former academic with over 15 years of experience as a cognitive neuroscientist and behavioral economist. Gleb has written for major outlets such as Inc. Magazine, Time, Scientific American, Fast Company, and Psychology Today, and has been interviewed extensively on TV and podcasts. As CEO of Disaster Avoidance Experts, he has consulted and coached hundreds of clients worldwide, including large corporations such as IBM, Honda, and Wells Fargo. His academic career includes seven years as a professor at Ohio State University and dozens of peer-reviewed pieces published in leading academic journals. He authored the bestselling author of several books, such as “The Truth-Seeker's Handbook,” “Never Go With Your Gut: How Pioneering Leaders Make the Best Decisions and Avoid Business Disasters.” How did we connect, Gleb and me? When we booked our catch-up, the plan was to prepare you for redundancy and how job hunters can make the right decisions when emotions are high during a crisis or unexpected events. Little did we know we would be talking about avoiding disasters during the biggest disaster of our time. So, what did we do? We quickly pivoted our chat and focused squarely on what is happening globally - the uncertainty and complexity of the COVID-19 pandemic, its effects on the economy, our work, or our livelihoods. Gleb helps us understand how to respond to threats effectively, make the right decisions, and prepare for things that can go wrong that we are not anticipating. At a time like this, his clients must be thinking, “how lucky are we that we've had Gleb on a retainer, right?!”. Yes, indeed! And you will be pleased to know - I know I was - that many times during our conversation, I had my coaching framework validated over and over again by Gleb's research and recommendations - that we need to think and plan long-term. We should focus and work strategically towards our goals to pragmatically develop a long term, sustainable career. I felt reassured that I'm tracking well in the support I'm providing you folks, my students, and clients. Together, we will get through this and be better positioned for the new world of work that will crystalize on the other side of this crisis. We've all heard this before; that crisis is both a threat and an opportunity. So we need to be ready to bypass the threats we face right now and those yet to come and use this hibernation time to prepare ourselves and update our toolkit to make the most out of the opportunities ahead. In times of crisis, more often than not, we are overwhelmed with our emotions and base our decisions on what we feel is right. We are usually not prepared to deal with it and especially not make the right decisions that will benefit us for the long term. How can we make the right decisions, especially in times of crisis or when something unexpected happens, like COVID-19?   Here are some key takeaways from this interview: Beware of these three cognitive biases: they are the specific errors we make because of how our brain is wired. They are the systematic patterns of making wrong decisions: Normalcy bias – where we feel like the future will be normal, that it will be like the past. Confirmation bias – where we tend to look for information that confirms our beliefs and ignore information that doesn't. Optimism bias – where we tend to be way more optimistic about the future. Ask yourself five questions to minimize risks when making important decisions: What important information didn't I yet fully consider? What evidence then should I take into account? What dangerous judgment errors haven't I addressed? What cognitive biases haven't I considered? What would a trusted adviser tell you? What would they tell you about this situation? How have you addressed all the ways that this decision could fail? What would cause you to revise your decision? What would cause you to change your mind about whatever decision you're making?   Links mentioned in this episode: Dr. Tsipursky's link to help you assess the 30 most dangerous judgment errors for yourself and your workplace, for your career  “Never Go with Your Gut” book.  Connect with Gleb on LinkedIn  Download a transcript of this episode    Free Optimized Job Search Schedule and Workshop - Holiday Edition You can download the Optimized Job Search Schedule for free: a workbook I designed especially for the Holiday Season. For more about Tim and his work visit ChangemakersBooks.com. To buy a copy of Pro Truth for yourself, click here. Plus: The newly conservative-controlled Supreme Court has issued "injunctive relief" against an executive order (issued by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo) that sought to restrict the number of attendees at religious services in certain zones identified as pandemic hotspots. In Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn v. Cuomo, the Court agreed with the church's argument that restrictions applying uniquely to religious meetings violate the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. (Nevermind, as pointed out by Chief Justice John Roberts in his dissent, that Cuomo had already altered his executive order so that the zone restrictions no longer apply.) Justice Stephen Breyer also dissented, insisting that governors should be given considerable latitude to act during times of public emergency. In any case, this ruling is surely a harbinger of how a SCOTUS now dominated by Trump appointees will rule favorably on behalf of religious conservatives. Theme music courtesy of Body Found. Never go with your gut! The title of Gleb's books draws you in because of it's opposition to one of the oldest forms of decision making known to man. That gut feeling has started businesses, creating opportunities and yes it has even built a relationship or two. At least from the spectator's vantage point, it looks like the gut is this magical force that some people just have. Right? Gleb gave us a breakdown of the decision-making process that leads to success. It includes looking at the perceived threat and determining if we should flee, fight, or freeze at that moment. Does this sound familiar? Many of us learned these strategies but when we get into a competitive market we tend to push them aside to take on popular trends in business. Yes, going with your gut feeling is a popular trend. (Haven't you heard of the 90-day fiance and love is blind?) How about the SWOT analysis that many businesses use as a guide? Gleb shares that it gives a false sense of comfort and a biased opinion of the strengths and opportunities. Looking at CEOs like Henry Ford and Jeff Bezos you will see the strategy within their decision making. Here is what works:~ Use an effective strategy ~ Looks for ways not to fail ~ Invest in education~ Be willing to experiment and fail Dr. Gleb Tsipursky is a cognitive neuroscientist and expert on behavioraleconomics and decision making. Questions Holly explores with Dr. Tsipursky: ·     How can we navigate decisions from a place of higher awareness during this time? ·     How does resilience pertain to the current situations? ·     What are the six issues to think about during transition times? ·     What are some tips for navigating awkward? Decisions are 80-90% driven by emotions.  Going by gut responses, or the fight or flight responses, do not serve appropriately in today’s world. With the situation today, the world situation of Coronaviras and Covid-19, people’s responses are not built to deal with this situation appropriately. People are still functioning in emergency mode and need to adjust to a new “abnormal.” Dr. Tsipursky’s business was deeply impacted during this challenging time. As a speaker and trainer, all of his events around his book tour were cancelled. His father also contracted Covid-19! His mother, having medical training, was able to keep him from going to the hospital. With so many layers of crisis occurring right now, people may believe they are better at communicating than they are. We all operating through different lenses. It’s important to ask oneself, What kind of values and information does the other person have? What kind of filters are they operating with? How can your communication fail? Hi, I'm Renata Bernarde, the Host of The Job Hunting Podcast The aim for this podcast is to help you nail your next job and have the career you want. If you are currently on the market looking for a new job or if you want tips on how to advance or change careers, make sure you follow this podcast on iTunes, YouTube or Spotify.    Episode Notes “Our emotions, our intuitions and our gut reactions will often lead us in the wrong direction”, said Dr Gleb Tsipursky in my interview with him, recorded on Friday 27th of March 2020. Never have we ever in our lives, in this generation, at this point in time, wanted to know more what to do, how to do it, and when will the threat of COVID-19 be over. All over the world, political leaders, scientists, health practitioners, businesses, families, we are all struggling to find out feet and get a sense of direction amidst the threat of COVID-19. It is  impacting our health and our economy like no other crisis we've ever seen before. In this episode I interview Dr Gleb Tsipursky, a disaster avoidance expert, consultant, coach, speaker and former academic with over 15 years of experience as a cognitive neuroscientist and behavioural economist. He authored the bestselling author of several book, such as “The Truth-Seeker's Handbook”, “Never Go With Your Gut: How Pioneering Leaders Make the Best Decisions and Avoid Business Disasters.” How did we connect, Gleb and me? Well, when we booked our catch up, the plan was to prepare you for redundancy, and how job hunters can make good decisions at times when emotions are high, during crisis or unexpected events. Little did we know we would be talking about avoiding disasters during the biggest disaster of our time. So, what did we do? We quickly pivoted our chat, of course, and focused squarely on what is happening in the world now: the uncertainty and complexity of the COVID-19 pandemic, and its flow on effects in the economy, our work or our livelihoods. Gleb helps us understand how to respond to threats effectively, how to make good decisions and how to prepare for things that can go wrong that we are not anticipating. At a time like this, his clients must be thinking “how lucky are we, that we've had Gleb on a retainer, right?!”. Yes, indeed! And you will be pleased to know - I know I was - that many times during our conversation I had my coaching framework validated over and over again by Gleb's research and recommendations. That we need think and plan long term, that we focus and work strategically towards our goals, that we work pragmatically to develop a long term, sustainable career. I felt re-assured that I'm tracking well in the support I'm providing you folks, my students and clients. And that together we will get through this and be better positioned for the new world of work that will crystalize on the other side of this crisis. We've all heard this before, that crisis is both threat and opportunity. So we need to be ready to bypass the threats we face right now and those yet to come, and use this hibernation time to prepare ourselves and update our toolkit to make the most out of the opportunities ahead. In times of crisis, more often than not, we are overwhelmed with our emotions and base our decisions out of what we feel is right. We are usually not prepared to deal with it and especially not able to make good decisions that will benefit us for the long term. So how can we make good decisions especially in times of crisis or in times where something unexpected happens, like COVID-19? Here are some key takeaways from this interview: Beware of these 3 cognitive biases: they are the specific errors we make because of how our brain is wired. They are the systematic patterns of making bad decisions: Normalcy bias – where we feel like the future will be normal, that it will be like the past. Confirmation bias – where we tend to look for information that confirms our beliefs and ignore information that doesn't. Optimism bias – where we tend to be way more optimistic about the future. Ask yourself 5 questions to minimize risks when making important decisions: What important information didn't I yet fully consider? What evidence then should I take into account? What dangerous judgement errors haven't I addressed? What cognitive biases haven't I considered? What would a trusted adviser tell you? What would they tell you about this situation? How have you addressed all the ways that this decision could fail? What would cause you to revise your decision? What would cause you to change your mind about whatever decision you're taking place?   Links mentioned in this episode: Dr Tsipursky's link to helps you assess the 30 most dangerous judgement errors for yourself and for your workplace, for your career: disasteravoidanceexperts.com/subscribe/ “Never Go with Your Gut” book: https://disasteravoidanceexperts.com/nevergut/ Connect with Gleb on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-gleb-tsipursky/     Join my community - it's free! And yet, time and time again, we all seem to make the same thinking errors that threaten or sabotage these relationships. These errors are called cognitive bias, and they happen when our brain attempts to simplify information by making assumptions.Grounded in evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), The Blindspots Between Us reveals the most common “hidden” cognitive biases that blind us to the truth, and which lead to the misunderstandings that damage our relationships. With this guide, you'll learn key skills to help you debias—to stop, pause, and objectively observe situations before jumping to conclusions about others' motives. You'll also learn to consider other people's points of view and past experiences before rushing to judgment and potentially undermining your relationships.Being a human is hard. None of us are perfect, and we all have our blindspots that can get in the way of building the relationships we really and truly want, deep down. This much-needed book will help you identify your own blindspots, and move beyond them for better relationships—and a better world.Author bio: https://disasteravoidanceexperts.com/glebtsipurskySELECTED ENDORSEMENTSEven the most intelligent people struggle with relationships. This groundbreaking book reveals that the way our brain is wired causes us to make many bad decisions in our relationships. All of us - even and in some cases especially the smartest people in the room - are susceptible to subtle decision-making errors called cognitive biases that can devastate our social ties with our loved ones, our friends, our coworkers, our local community, and our society as a whole. Gleb Tsipursky combines cutting-edge research and pragmatic case studies to show the kind of problems that result from falling into these mental blindspots-- Scott Barry Kaufman, PhD, is the Scientific Director of The Imagination Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, the bestselling author or editor of 8 books including Ungifted and Wired to Create, hosts “The Psychology Podcast,” and writes the column “Beautiful Minds” for Scientific AmericanDo not buy this book on impulse. Your gut cannot be trusted. But I hope you will trust me when I say that I objectively believe you should buy this book. It has a high probability of improving your life and especially your relationships immensely. It will help you avoid cognitive biases. Whether you're a student or a CEO, it will aid you in making better decisions about dating, family, friends, money, work, dessert, you name it. -- A. J. Jacobs, author of four New York Times bestsellers including The Know-It-All, and editor at Esquire magazineOur ability to enter into, nourish, and at times even end relationships in healthy ways is one of the keys to living a happy and fulfilling life. Yet most of us struggle with painful relational patterns that show up again and again, thwarting our ability to realize the higher potentials our relationships hold for wellbeing and mutual satisfaction. In this well-written, well-researched offering, Dr. Gleb Tsipursky provides clear and effective ways to relate to one another that promise to empower our relationships to be healthier and happier for many years to come. I strongly recommend it to those of us who are committed to learning how to grow our ability to love and be loved. -- Katherine Woodward Thomas, New York Times bestselling author of Conscious Uncoupling and Calling in “The One”, and licensed marriage and family therapistIn an era ever more divided by tribalism, bias and political acrimony, Dr. Tsipursky's excellent, insightful book provides timely guidelines for managing our cognitive biases, assumptions and hidden blind spots to improve our relationships with romantic partners, family, friends and co-workers. It's uniquely helpful and is arriving at a perfect time to make a difference in healing our society – and ourselves.-- Kathy McCoy, PhD, psychotherapist and bestselling author of We Don't Talk Anymore and Life Happens

We like to think of ourselves as being pretty smart.  We like to think that we make really good decisions.  We like to think especially in business environments that we use our logical side of our brain more so than the inner emotional brain.  However what the research tells us…we really do not know ourselves as well as we think we do.  In fact as Dr. Gleb Tsipursky explains we are so biased we make most of our decisions with our instincts and emotions.  And that is a problem. On this episode of AND Dr. Gleb Tsipursky takes us through his book Never Go with Your Gut: Avoiding: How Pioneering Leaders Make the Best Decisions and Avoid Business Disasters (Avoid Terrible Advice, Cognitive Biases, and Poor Decisions).  We quickly learn that there are over 100 cognitive biases that we have the choice to employ.  And then Gleb gives us example after example of how these glaring biases have destroyed many companies.  And while there are many books written on the subject of cognitive biases, Never Go with Your Gut is the first book to actually discuss how to overcome these cognitive biases.  Listen as Dr. Tsipursky takes us through a few of these biases that we often use, gives us ideas how to over come them and then helps you deal with someone who has these biases and how to help them see the light of their ways.  Something he refers to as EGRIP.  You will get some great insight and few chuckles along the way.  ENJOY!
