On this episode of The Massimo Show, Rod sits down with one of the top 5 leadership experts in the world. Mark Sanborn is president of Sanborn & Associates, Inc., an idea lab for leadership development. A New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, he has presented over 2,600 speeches and seminars in every state and fourteen countries. His latest book is The Potential Principle. Mark is the Expert in Residence at High Point University located in High Point, NC and his client list includes Costco, FedEx, ESPN, IBM, and St Jude's.  As with the best of leaders, Mark came from humble beginnings. He grew up on a farm in Ohio, was an average high school guy, and attended Ohio State University.  There he studied agricultural economics. “Economics was the most philosophical construct in my life,” Mark tells Rod.  “Economics is the allocation of scarce resources for maximum return.  Our scarce resources are our time, energy, and expertise.  We all want to get the most out of life.” Mark never practiced as an agricultural economist but went into agricultural sales.  It forced him to engage in a business where he was a manager.  After a short stint in sales and marketing, he is now in his 33rd year as a professional author, speaker, and advisor.   From the age of 10, Mark was giving free speeches focused on patriotism and agricultural.  Mark heard a lot of professional speakers, but it wasn't until Mark was 16 when he heard someone else speak that  it dawned on him that person was getting paid a lot of money to tell their story.   The spirit of free enterprise set in. The only thing better than giving speeches, in Mark's mind, was having someone pay you to do it.  As a freshman at OSU and because Mark had been involved in Future Farms of America as a state officer, he started getting invited to speak at commencement exercises and at after-dinner speeches.  One day Mark got an invitation and he told them he charged $150 and they accepted.  That was his first paid speech at the age of 19.  From there he kept building.   The Three Resources a Leader Has Are:  1) Time 2) Expertise 3) Time and Expertise of their team Mark alleges that right now finding people that have true expertise is difficult.  “We are overwhelmed with information” he explains to Rod “ The ability to access information is good, the ability to access its validity is harder than it's ever been. One of the hardest jobs for leadership is doing your due diligence to make sure the decisions you're are making and the practices you are using are solid and credible.  It is important to learn from practice.”   You Don't Need a Title to Be a Leader Mark explains that your skillset makes you a leader, not your title.  You can be given a title, but you can't be given a skillset.  A skillset has to be learned and developed.  The real test of leadership is if you did not have a title, and you could not reward or punish people for things they did or did not do what you asked - would they still do it?   Bad managers get compliance but good leaders get a commitment.  Commitment is getting people to do it because they are sold on it, they want to do it, they know it will benefit them and the greater good.  True Leadership always benefits the greater good whether it is the colleague, vendor, customer, or community.  Today too many people look at leadership as a tool to get what they want instead of the real use of leadership which is to help everyone to get what they need.   The Concept of the FRED Factor Fred was a Postal service employee who delivered my mail.  He had a simple job of putting mail in a box, but he made it artistry through the things that he did.  The quality of his service and the friendships he made.  Mark was so impressed with it that he wrote a book about it.  The Fred Factor is the ability to continually create value for the people you live and work with through 3 things you can control.   1) passion 2) creativity 3) commitment Being extraordinary is a choice.  Many of the most successful people Mark knows were extraordinary not because of the way they were brought up or circumstances but in spite of. “We learn a lot more through failure than we do from success.” Mark says.  What made Fred so special?  When Mark first moved into a house in Colorado, there was a knock at his door and it was Fred introducing himself.   Fred was more worried about Mark's mail than he was.  He was a professional.  A professional is more worried about the solution to your problems their product or service solves than you are.   There were dozens of other examples of where Fred, without a title and just a commitment to do an extraordinary job - you can be extraordinary.  Fred does it because he believes that excellence is the right thing to do.   The Gift of Time  The only thing people want more than disposable income is time.  We don't have enough time and we are always too busy.  Covid has killed the excuse you don't have time.   With Covid, everyone is adapting.  A surfer interacts with the wave to get the outcome they desire.  We need to learn to develop those skills.  First, stop looking for the new normal. “I never liked the phrase the new normal,” Mark tells Rod. Through necessity we are going to say it's the new abnormal.  Every day is going to be a little different.  By thinking about the abnormal we never get complacent we become more vigilant and more agile.   Tune in to hear Mark talk more in-depth concerning leadership and the new abnormal.

We all want to reach our potential yet nobody really knows what that really is. So, how can we recognize and keep hitting new levels of our potential? Well, today’s guest has all the answers.   Mark Sanborn is the president of Sanborn & Associates, Inc., an idea lab for leadership development and turning ordinary into extraordinary. He is also the author of The Fred Factor and his most recent book, The Potential Principle, which is what we’ll be talking about on today’s episode!   Mark got into competitive public speaking when he was ten years old and later in life, he went on and founded Sanborn & Associates. He wanted to help leaders communicate better and turn them from ordinary to extraordinary.   Mark wrote The Potential Principle after working 30+ years with leaders. Mark realized that his clients were already really, really good at what they do. However, it dawned on him that in order for them to continue being the best at what they do, they had to continue to get better and improve themselves — but how could they do that if they were already the top leaders in their industry? They have no one else to emulate. They’re on the frontlines and they’re making things up as they go.   The more you learn about any particular skill or industry, the more you realize you have to learn. There’s nothing wrong with arriving at your destination in your industry but the real problem is when you stop growing and stop challenging yourself to reach a new level of potential.   What is the Potential Principle? Well, in a nutshell, we all know how good we’ve become, but none of us know how good we can be. The potential principle highlights this problem to help you realize and plan where your ‘next’ step is. As Mark was researching the book, he found out that 58% of professionals said they had a commitment to getting better, but only 30% had a plan. Commitment without a plan is just wishful thinking and daydreaming.   Interview Links: Potentialprinciple.com MarkSanborn.com   Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshops: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attending one of our workshops. Light Up The World Part Three by Pastor Phylip Morgan

Ammanford Bible Church (ABC) Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2018 36:07

Beginning his third and final part in the series, “Light Up The World”, based on our memory verse of the year, 2Corinthians 4:6,  Pastor Phyl speaks on the light of the world, which is us. Beginning his sermon, he refers us to a book by Mark Sanborn, titled, “The Fred Factor”. In this book, Mark Sanborn talks about his postal carrier, and the way in which this ordinary looking man, went on to do simple things to help. His attitude to customer service stretched far beyond the normal boundaries. Mark Sanborn encourages us, in his book, to be more like Fred. Pastor Phyl challenges this in his sermon and encouraged us to be a little more like Jesus. Speaking from his text for today, taken from Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Pastor Phyl used the illustration of the lamp under a bowl to show us that we need to use our gifts for the purpose of glorifying God. He gives us a light, and it is our duty as followers of Christ, to shine that light out into the world. In the nineties, the slogan “What Would Jesus Do” became popular. The truth is that now, we don't need to think this, but instead, should prompt ourselves to BLJ (Be Like Jesus). We don't need to wonder what He would do, because He lives in our hearts. We do not need to live a life of strict “Religion”, we simply need to be like Him, “doing good” and helping people just as we are told Jesus did in Acts 10:34-48. Lighting the lamp, Pastor Phyl spoke of how ridiculous it would be to then put a bowl over it, blotting out almost all of the light. The truth is that God wants us to be in relationship with Him, and we will then have no choice but to let our light shine. Pastor Phyl used text from James 2:14-26, to show us how we may do this. The truth is that we can let our light shine in such seemingly small insignificant things. The only thing we need really do is love on people, and if we do this, then our light will have no choice but to shine out. We must accept everyone. We are all part of a family tree of believers and letting our light shine in the same way Jesus did, simply involves going around, doing good, just as Jesus did in Acts. We should “be a nice human”, treating others as we would wish to be treated ourselves. One way in which we can let our light shine is to live a good life. We must live out the Ten Commandments, and the fruits of the spirit, which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We are called to use our gifts to serve. God has given us all individual gifts for a purpose, and it is up to us to use them for the furthering of His Kingdom. We must “BE SALT AND LIGHT”. When you are in a position to do good, do it! Do not withhold your light from others, because when you do,  you withhold your light from God, too. Never underestimate the power that's in the light. The light is powered by God, and if you let your light shine, then God will do amazing things.   Bibliography: “The Fred Factor” Mark Sanborn Scriptures: 2Corinthians 4:6, Matthew 5:14-16, Acts 10:34-48, Philippians 2:5, James 2:14-26, Galatians 5:19-26, Proverbs 3:27-28, James 4:17.

Just because ten great companies have a gym, doesn’t mean having a gym makes you a great company…So what I try to do, rather than looking for those specifics, I try to be principle-based. Principles don’t change. A principle’s true across time, it’s true across culture and it’s true across context.” “Communication is about being understood and it’s about understanding. That will never change.” “Isn’t life not a thousand times too short to bore ourselves?” “Expectation without education equals frustration.”  “Fred had a simple job, but he brought so much artistry and craft to it that it was amazing…. And what I realized is if Fred could bring that kind of artistry to something as redundant as putting mail in a box, then you and I have no excuse. We all have a bigger canvas to work with and it’s not about the job you have, but how you do the job.” “The best way to create more Fred’s in your organization is twofold. One is, recognize the ones you’ve already got…. The second thing is to demonstrate it. Be the role model. You can’t demand…what you’re going to do is alienate them.” “Lord make me a simple man in a complex world…Simple is good.” “Literally, don’t tower over people.  If you don’t want to intimidate [your employees] and you come into their office and they're seated, don’t stand over their desk. Either sit down or take a walk with them so you are literally on the same level.” “When you don’t see much meaning in what you do, you won’t bring much value to what you do.” “I’m trying to find new focal points that are the intersection really between 3 things. What I can do (skill set), what I like to do, and what’s profitable…I want to make sure what I’m doing isn’t just enjoyable, that’s a hobby. I want to make sure what I’m doing isn’t just a skillset, that’s a job. But that what I’m doing is profitable, but literally and psychically.” “I pay my trainer to create resistance. If you don’t encounter resistance you’re not changing and you’re not growing. That’s one of the first clues that you’re getting better when you buck up against resistance.” “You get passion out of 4 buckets. One is your passion for what you do. Another is your passion about why you do…And then there’s passion about how you do it… The final trump card is to be passionate about who you do it for.” FINAL FOUR What have you done differently in your life to stand out? I think I’ve always been big on preparation. I think that most battles or games are won off the field. What makes someone stand out in business or in life? A decided point of view. A definitive point of view. It’s well thought out… Moynihan once said, “We’re all entitled to our own opinions, but we’re not entitled to our own facts.” So I think to stand out in business, you need to be well informed so that your point of view is based in reality, or based in facts so that it’s clear what you stand for and what’s important to you. What’s the best advice you’ve received? Spend less than you make. How do you want to be remembered? As a guy who wanted to make a positive difference because he loved people. And because he loved people, he led. And when he led, he served…But I think it begins with how you treat the people who are closest to you and that consistently outflows to how you treat the people you encounter every day. Jason Hartman starts off this 10th episode with a look into the "tulip bubble" in cryptocurrencies that he's afraid is going to explode. It's taking more and more energy to "mine" Bitcoin these days, and this fake work is causing real damage to our environment. Jason explains what he thinks will eventually replace cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, and also announces the newest addition to the Meet the Masters event in January. In his 10th episode interview, Jason talks with Mark Sanborn, author of the new book The Potential Principle: A Proven System for Closing the Gap Between How Good You Are and How Good You Could Be, about how to traverse The Potential Matrix and create a better self. No matter how your life has been going, there's always room for improvement.  Mark offers some tips on activities you can do to better yourself, as well as some talk about The Fred Factor, and why it became (and remains) such a success. "Success leaves a blueprint." My friends success leaves a blueprint and we are lucky to have 10 amazing guests who shared their blueprint - trials, errors, challenges, wins, successes, joys - with us this season. Learning from their model, we will become more inspired in the way we lead our lives. I can't believe we get to hang out with these amazing friends. II’ll recap my favorite lessons, so you can be reminded and/or encouraged to go back to the episodes that are most relevant for you; so that you can live your most inspired life with a little help from our friends. SHOW NOTES: Ep. #45: SALLY HOGSHEAD, listen here. Sally typically shares her expertise on branding with major brands like Nike, Ikea and Target. On this episode, she helps us identify our best qualities, and those of our businesses, so we can better connect with others and live inspired. You'll love the simple Fascination Quiz she shares so you can dig deeper after the episode. Sally also told a story she doesn't often share, during which she said, "My dad gave me life and then 10 years later, he gave it back to me." You'll understand more about what she meant by the quote and what it means to each of us when you listen. Ep. #46 DENNIS GILLAN, listen here. This was a special episode for Suicide Prevention Month and one of the most emotional, yet joy-filled and humorous ones, we've had. Dennis has been to the darkest places and yet come back out to show us how we can live in the light. Dennis committed his life to reducing the number of completed suicides and removing the stigma around mental health after losing his two brothers to suicide. His story helps us break down the stigma around mental health and better care for ourselves, those we love and those in the wake of suicide already. Ep. #47 DANIEL SILVERSTEIN - listen here. So many of us are experts at identifying what is wrong in the world, aren’t we? On this episode we were joined by a guest who didn't just identify what was wrong in his industry, he created a solution to the problem… and built an inspired business around it. Daniel Silverstein will inspire you to look at your challenges as opportunities to make a bigger impact. My favorite quote was: "Why NOT me?" Why can't I be the change needed in my industry, neighborhood, family. Ep. #48 MARK SANBORN - listen here. “It was out of abject failure that I learned to professionally speak.” This was astounding to hear Mark Sanborn say as he hero of mine, giant in the speaking industry and author of the much loved The Fred Factor and just released The Potential Principle. Hang out with us to realize the truth in one of his popular quotes, "We enjoy our successes but learn more from our setbacks.” Ep. #49 DINA DWYER-OWENS - listen here. Dina is a new friend that I met through Rory Vaden, a self-discipline expert who joined us in Season 2 on episode 3x. Rory rocked. When he said "You gotta meet Dina" I was ALL IN. Dina is co-chairwoman of Dwyer Group, has 3,000 franchisees across North America and appeared on the CBS hit Undercover Boss. She runs her business by focusing on clients, employees and a clear core value system. Learn how to apply this 3-part focus in your life so you can live and work inspired, too. Ep. #50 CURT STEINHORST - listen here. Ready to learn hacks to save your attention for things that REALLY matter? Did you know that: Every 6 minutes people check their phones. Married adults spend more time online than with their spouse. People spend 1 – 4 hours loafing on the internet during a work day. Wow — it’s easy to see the problem!  Curt explains the solutions he shares in his new book Can I Have Your Attention? so you can live inspired in this tech-centered world. Ep. #51 EDIE LITTLEFIELD SUNDBY - listen here. On this episode we went on an amazing journey, spanning the 1,600 miles of the El Camino Real "Mission" trail from Mexico to California. Better than the journey we took was the guide who led us. Edie Littlefield Sundby is know as "the mission walker" and her mantra is "while alive, live." Edie took a devastating cancer diagnosis and turned it into an opportunity to follow her dreams and look at every day as a "bonus". This episode is for anyone touched by illness. Edie's spirit will inspire you in ways you didn't know possible. Ep. #52 JOHN RUHLIN - listen here. "Are you sowing seeds for 50-year relationships or 5-minute relationships?” John Ruhlin will help you better understand this question and the importance of how you answer it. He teaches generosity as a competitive advantage in business for clients like NASCAR and the Miami Dolphins and is the author of Giftology. Join us to learn how to give more inspired gifts this year and always. Ep. #53 OZZIE SMITH - listen here. Join me and one of the St. Louis Cardinals players who signed baseballs for me when I was 9 and learning to write again after my fire. [Don't know the epic story? Listen to Ep. #32 to hear how Hall of Fame Cardinals Announcer Jack Buck changed my life + rallied the entire Cardinals team to join in his effort.] Ozzie shared about being a hall of fame shortstop and man. This episode was so special to me we recorded a video of it, too. Ep. #54 Richard Bach - listen here. We ended the season with the legendary author of Jonathan Livingston Seagull - a book that spent 2 years on the New York Times bestseller list and one that many of our podcast guests have listed as their favorite book when asked in the Live Inspired 7 at the end of every episode. Richard's writing, embraced by millions since the 1970s, suggests we are born to fly, and, we are free.  Don't miss this epic interview with a man who doesn't often give interviews. It's an honor to have him on the show. Don't miss it.  ***  If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe (automatically get new episodes), rate & review (help spread the word!) this podcast. "It was out of abject failure that I learned to speak." My friends, today we get to hang out with a legendary speaker. Mark Sanborn has spoken around the world 2,500+ times, authored the wildly popular Fred Factor and just released The Potential Principle.  Mark will share his story about being a boy in 4H Club who failed at presenting a 5-minute speech... and how he transformed that failure into a successful speaking career. As Mark says: "We enjoy our successes but learn more from our setbacks." Join us and get read to transform challenges into an inspired life. SHOW NOTES: Nobody can prevent you from choosing to be extraordinary. It was out of abject failure that I learned to speak. I bombed so badly giving a 5-minute speech in grade school it made me want to learn to write and deliver a winning speech.  When someone says it doesn't matter, usually they're just minimizing disappointment.  We enjoy our successes but learn a lot more from our setbacks. Look for the pain in your life; often there's an opportunity there.  Lock in greatness, fame is fickle. Greatness is about contribution and that is where you have control. If you blame your failures on others, you can't own your successes. Leaders take responsibility but give credit. Managers try to be heroes. Leaders try to make heroes. Often you become extraordinary inspite of not because of. In the face of a challenge, that's when people become great. We are responsible for living in a way that shows others what we we truly believe. Integrity is the distance between what you think and do. Your beliefs, values and purpose manifest in your work. Couple your actions with intentions; too often we say something but don't do anything about it. Narrow the gap between what you know you should do and what you actually do. Leadership test: Is anything/one better because of you? We all know how good we've become. None of us know how good we can be. Try to achieve a little more of your potential so you don't miss the great opportunity of life. The Potential Principle, Mark's new book, share a process to help you go from where you are to where you want to be MARK SANBORN'S LIVE INSPIRED 7  1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Bible is the underpinning of my worldview. The River Why, is one of the greatest works of fiction. It really impacted me. 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do with it? Meet with my financial planner and make sure my family's needs are met so they can get by, but not so much they don't have to do anything. Invest the rest in institutions that will outlive me. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A handful of books and our computer with photos. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? The Apostle Paul who called himself the chief of the sinners, but was also one of the greatest influencers of the Christian faith. I can relate to a really flawed guy who is doing his best. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? A congressman told me at a young age that anytime you give a speech, people always want to be entertained. I've replaced "entertain" with engage. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Lighten up. I can be a pretty intense dude. Be serious about what you do, but don't take yourself to serious. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? If you want to be successful do whatever you do a little better than anyone else who did it by working a little bit harder than any one else did.  ***  If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe (automatically get new episodes), rate & review (help spread the word!) this podcast wherever you get your podcasts. This post does have affiliate links. The ‘Fred Factor’ by Mark Sanborn.   With this book I realized, I enjoy the more personal self-improvement books and not really the ones pertaining to business.   This book definitely plays to both, but more so on the business side of things. In listening to various entrepreneurial podcasts, two of the bigger points echoed across the board, build relationships and  add value.   This book tells you point by point on how to do that.   These may seem like common sense, but I prefer it to be spelled out and these are my absolute biggest takeaways from reading the ‘Fred Factor’.  This was another book that was in Evan Carmicheal’s Youtube video 7 Books Every Entrepreneur Must Read. Here are some golden nuggets from the book: ‘Fred is more likely living proof that there is another less observable competitor:  the job we could have done.   The truth is that we compete against our own potential every day.   And most of us fall short of what we are capable of doing or being.’ pg 14 ‘Here’s a mystery:  If you expect praise and recognition, it will seldom come.   I really don’t know why, but life has demonstrated repeatedly that if your motive for doing something is to receive thanks or praise, you’ll often be disappointed.   If, however, you go about doing the right thing, knowing that the doing is its own reward, you’ll be fulfilled whether or not you get recognition from others.’ pg 31 ‘The prerequisite for relationship building is trust.   At its most basic level, trust is built on believing that people are who they represent themselves to be.’ pg 46 ‘People are flattered when you make an effort to get to know them and seek information on how to serve them better.’ pg 47 ‘Good ideas are all around you.   Seek out what the best people are doing.   Watch and learn.   Then adapt and apply.   The last statement is the key.   If you just copy what other capable people are doing, you’ll only do as well as they do.   The key is to adapt, to take good ideas from every source and then apply them with your own special flair.’ pg 66 ‘Over time, the one-a-day principle will turn your mundane life into an extraordinary life-and it will do the same for others as well.’ pg 67 ‘When you don’t see much meaning in what you do, you won’t bring much value to what you do.’ pg 83 ‘Those who do the best teach the best.   The man or woman who can demonstrate a lesson with his or her life most powerfully impacts others.’ pg 94 This is a book I will reference depending where I am in my business.   Reading this book has shown me where my customer service skills should be.   I’ve noticed slight changes in my work behavior especially at my job, it being that of a front desk clerk in a hotel. Your buying the ‘Fred Factor’ through my Amazon or Ebay links (through the banners on this blog) will support the author and myself. Thanks for reading/watching/listening.   What where your biggest takeaways from what I’ve mentioned?   Have you read the ‘Fred Factor’?    What did you think?   For more check out the blog at pvpfromnj.com If you've enjoyed this, please support this podcast by doing any, all your shopping through my eBay link: eBay or my Amazon link: Amazon Any shopping through these links will be at no extra cost to you.
