Often times when we think about presence or being present, we think it's a matter of determination. Ehhh (wrong noise beep). Presence exists more like a battery percentage. We can use it as much as we like, but when we're on low, we're on low. When we're out, we're out. It's not a matter of determination, but availability. If we've used up our presence for the day, we'll have to recharge before we can expect ourselves to give more. In this episode, Erin gives you an improv activity that will help train your mind to be present throughout the day. It's kind of like taking a cold shower to train your mind to tolerate stress. “Yes...but, Yes…and, the first one disrupts the thoughts flowing while the latter connects an idea that is already forming.” Peter Margaritis In today's episode Peter Margaritis continues his series on: Take a Load Off: Stress relievers for overwrought leaders. Peter shows how Business Improv is a tool that all leaders need to master to learn how to overcome pressures that come from business. Awareness is one way that can help you develop confidence and help you overcome stress. Being aware of your environment can help you control your involvement in any situation and this helps you manage and control your reactions to different triggers. Being prepared in any circumstance adds a layer of confidence. You may not be able to foresee the unexpected but you can be ready for the curves that may come your way. Without being prepared in most cases you are more concerned about anxieties and the stress of not binge prepared. As Peter shares with us rest of the tools he believes can help manage stress for leaders, he gives amazing examples of different stages that help drive the points home. “Stress is not always bad; it can motivate us into positive meaningful actions.” Peter Margaritis In today's episode Peter Margaritis begins his series on: Take a Load Off: Stress relievers for overwrought leaders. He also shows how Business Improv is the way to go when facing uncertain situations and changes in the business world. When you are trying something new, always try it with a beta test on people you are sure will give you honest feedback before taking to the market. Peter gives an example of how something he hadn't thought about previously became one of the most successful business decisions for 2020. Something that was had been set up to educational also turned out to be entertaining, enjoyable, a bonding session to learn as well. What makes you happy? What doesn't make you happy? What stresses you? Stress is part of our everyday lives. It comes from the good the bad, and the in between. Stress is an opportunity to make change and make a positive outcome in the long run. “Negotiation is not a fight but a collaboration. Prepare more than memorize.” Peter Margaritis In today's episode Peter Margaritis continues his on Unscripted Give-and-Take and how to use Business Improv to resolve disputes and negotiate deals. Going for an all in approach is not a good way to begin business with someone you are trying to build a relationship with. You have the tools you need in order to have a win-win outcome in negotiation. The beginning of every conversation is a smile that disarms the other party. Your smile needs to be genuine. You may not get everything you need; you will however get the chance for future business opportunities. Humanize the conversation during negotiation creates an atmosphere of calm and respect that both parties can feel comfortable no matter the outcome. Do not use manipulation to get the other party to get them to do your point. You can however show them the benefits of what you are telling them, to their own goals and agenda's and this makes the relationship last longer. Preparedness during negotiation is better than memorizing facts and figures for that table. Adapt with the changing moods and turns at the table and do not follow a written in stone script; you will fail. Peter gives great tips on what to look for at the table during negotiation. “Emotional resistance to negotiation wastes time and makes working with others hard. Negotiation is a relationship builder and not a war zone.” Peter Margaritis In today's episode, Peter Margaritis talks about Unscripted Give-and-Take and how to use Business Improv to resolve disputes and negotiate deals. Sometimes during negotiations, we must understand that you can negotiate up instead of down. Be able to negotiate to your best and have a win-win outcome. As a business owner, entrepreneur, consultant, or employee of an organization, even when you feel that you are not a great negotiator, it's good to learn the skills for your business and yourself and give credit to your skills and experience. Have the confidence to sell your expertise to the best that you can. According to Peter, six key points are great to have during negotiation. In this episode of Lead.exe, Brian, Nick, and Jon are joined by friends of the show Peter Margaritis and Roxanne Kaufman Elliott to discuss Peter's new book Off Script: Mastering the Art of Business Improv. The conversation includes the "yes and" approach to leadership, some practical tips for leaders at any level, and of course no shortage of amusing anecdotes from Peter and Roxanne.
“Go write those stories, prepare and practice. And then if the occasion calls, go off script.” Peter Margaritis This is an excerpt from the book, “Off Script: Mastering The Art of Business Improv.“ The Silent Killer of business is ultimately a lack of financial acumen. The death knell of a company comes from having leaders who are empowered to make important decisions, who don't understand the fundamentals of Accounting and Finance. leaders need this understanding and knowledge to make a more informed, smarter and more profitable decision. Further, without the key elements of Improv in place, we won't have the courage or safety to talk about the money. We need to teach accounting and finance to non-financial leaders in a manner that removes the complexity from accounting and financial jargon, and teach them the fundamentals in plain English. When you switch the accounting and finance light bulb on, and include it as part of the Improv leadership development, your leaders will make better business decisions because their business acumen has been fully achieved. In business, problems and solutions are always about money. The improv exercises in this book provides you with tools that can always make you stronger regardless of your title or the amount of work experience or your confidence. Your ability to generate big results from these improv activities sometimes hinges on the participants' basic financial acumen to have these conversations in the first place. The combination of Improv off script leadership skills, and strong financial acumen can take you and your organization to new heights. It's been my great honor to introduce you to the world in which more yes is possible. A world in which respect, trust and support underlie our every interaction; a world in which we can focus on what matters and listen to the people who matter. A world in which we can adapt to any contingencies, opportunity or crisis, like a seasoned, talented improviser, ready to accept the gifts of change and forge forward into a story that's worth waiting to be written. Peter Margaritis, CSP, author of Off Scr!pt: Mastering the Art of Business Improv, tried his hand at improv in graduate school and, by his own accounts, he wasn't “very funny.” However, he realized that improv can become a very powerful, and useful, leadership tool. Margaritis says that improv changed his life, his business, and his way of being. He hopes it helps others realize that improv isn't about being funny, but it's a great leadership tool to develop in today's business landscape. In the book, Margaritis writes about the ‘seven foundations of improv' which starts with a foundation of “respect, trust, and support.” He adds that as long as people trust those who they work with – and they trust you, you must continue to cultivate that trust. Also, leaders should be doing everything in their power to support their teams with the right skills and tools to succeed, but if any of the three elements is missing, everything crumbles. There is one key feature, or the glue “that holds it all together.” Those two words are “yes…and.” Margaritis says that “yes/and is about agreement but not always agreeing. It's about empathy, collaboration, leaving your ego behind, and making it about your team.” Margaritis says people should learn to “listen to understand, not listen to respond” because “the business that we're all in is the people business, first and foremost.” Without people we have no business. The Everyday PM: Project Management Principles for Your Everyday Life
Going OFF SCRIPT doesn't come naturally to most organizational leaders. We want to control the narrative, ensure ideal outcomes, script the conversations, manage the problems, predict the future, and win (negotiations, new business, market share, and more). But what if good leaders could become better leaders by doing the opposite — by letting go of the control, by going “off script” in their conversations and negotiations, by being present instead of rushing to the future, and by collaborating in authentic, empathetic ways? If your organization is like most, the old way of communicating and managing isn't working for you. Status quo is coming up short. It's time to master the art of business improvisation (“improv”)! Returning to the podcast is renowned speaker, bestselling business author, Accidental Accountant, leadership expert, and improv virtuoso Peter Margaritis to chat about his new book, Off Script: Mastering the Art of Business Improv. In what is his third book on effective workplace communication, Peter invites managers, directors, founders, vice presidents, and chief executives to redefine leadership and teamwork. And he teaches you the techniques he's taught employees at world-class brands like White Castle Systems, Cardinal Health, Target, Oklahoma State University, and Marriott. "Business improv is about letting go of your own agenda to listen intently — to be empathetic and open-minded in the present moment — so you can truly connect with colleagues and other stakeholders to generate optimal results." In business and in life, we tend to respond to others with “No, because ...” or “Yes, but ...” These dismissive and controlling tendencies lead to impasses, arguments, and ultimately failures. But when we learn to respond to others with “Yes, and ...” — acknowledging what we've heard and building upon it — we arrive more quickly at agreement and at breakthrough solutions for challenging problems. “Yes, and ...” is one of several improv techniques you'll learn from Peter Margaritis's Off Script! — a book that will help you build bridges, generate good ideas, adapt to any situation, nurture teams, and keep your anxiety at bay. Here's a sneak peek at what we cover: The importance of "preparation" in improv The case for "improv" in improving organizational cultures Practical advice based on real-life scenarios Making sure your virtual meetings and presentations don't suck Enjoyed this conversation with Peter? Let's talk about comedy and how it relates to business. In this episode, Peter Margaritis joins the podcast to talk about just that, and his new book, “Off-Script: Mastering the Art of Business Improv.” Improv, at its core, is about building a conversation out of what another person says instead of relying on our own agendas. In our business settings, most of us want to control the narrative to ensure ideal outcomes. We want to script the conversations, manage the problems, predict the future, and most importantly, win. But good leaders become better leaders by doing the opposite — by letting go of control, and going off script in their conversations, negotiations, and brainstorms. This improv-inspired approach builds the mental muscles we need to be more than merely present in the meeting, but to collaborate with others in truly authentic, empathetic ways. This might be a totally new role, but we can do it. Peter Margaritis can help us get there. To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit https://blionline.org/blog (blionline.org/blog). EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Improv and Business - Improv story - Using improv in business - Building impulse and being present Accidental Accountant - How did Peter end up being the Accidental Accountant? - When to use professional terms and when not to do so? - How to simplify presentations in an understandable language without losing the credibility of your profession? - Matching your presentation to your audience. - Research steps and preparations for public speaking. - Data and Storytelling - How much data is too much data? - Virtual and in-person speaking. - Speaking the language of your target listener. - Removing the “can” presentation. Peter Margaritis, CSP, CPA, also known as the Accidental Accountant, is the author of “Improv Is No Joke: Using Improvisation to Create Positive Results in Leadership and Life” and “Taking the Numb Out of Numbers: Explaining and Presenting Financial Information with Confidence and Clarity” During his time as a corporate CPA, Peter took improv classes and performed stand-up comedy. Communicating directly with audiences was life-changing, and Peter discovered his true passion: Teaching what he knew rather than being a practicing CPA. That led him to university faculty positions where Peter combined his accounting skills with his improv performance skills. He realized his students not only learned more when they were entertained and engaged, but they also retained that knowledge and could apply it in new situations. It was an epiphany. Through his keynote presentations and customized workshops, Peter shows how the tools used in improv – like listening, flexibility, and trust – can change how a team interacts with each other and their clients. Bottom line, Peter can help your team learn new methods to improve their communication and build stronger relationships with your clients, customers, stakeholders, and associates. Bob Kulhan has been helping business people understand and react more successfully for over 20 years, using his skills in improv. He was a member of Chicago’s famed Second City acting group and has performed in the iO and Annoyance Theaters, as well as the PIT in New York City. In our interview, Bob explains his technique of, Yes, And, explained in his book, “Getting To YES And-The Art of Business Improv.” The phrase, Yes, and, is the cornerstone of improvisation. For example, in a sales conversation, rather than being satisfied with a No answer, or an objection to your presentation, simply respond with, Yes, And --- what can we do to make our product work for you? Always keep the client engaged and let them tell you what they need and explain how you can fill that need.Tune in to learn how you can use improvisation to improve your communications. https://soartosuccess.eliteexpertsnetwork.com
Bob Kulhand, CEO of Business Improv is back! This week's episode is a second look at how using improv techniques can help us at home and work. We explore the roots of "Yes, AND..." while applying them to being resilient and adaptable. We also explore some of the misconceptions of "Yes, AND..." and when "Yes, but..." might be appropriate. Bob puts me on the spot to teach an improv activity we can all use at the dinner table and offers a host of resources to help you bring "Yes, AND..." into your life!
Whether you’ve historically been for or against #virtual #learning, it’s a reality everyone has had to embrace amidst the #coronavirus pandemic. For some, it was business as usual or a relatively seamless transition. For others, it’s been an overwhelming and painful challenge, leaving learning professionals frustrated and learners disengaged. And, just because a lot of what’s been done in the past is bad doesn’t mean it can’t be done well. In this episode I’m joined by Bob Kulhan and Josh Pryor from Business Improv to share our experiences in doing virtual learning well. And, whether you’ve been doing virtual well for a while or are just getting started you’ll find something that will help take your virtual offerings from ordinary to extraordinary. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/learningtechtalks/support
As an L&D or business leader, does improv immediately jump to mind as a solution to a number of the human challenges we’re facing amidst the coronavirus pandemic? I wouldn’t be surprised if many answered no to that question. However, I’d advocate it should be. Amidst the ever-growing, gloomy news about the coronavirus and the negative impact it’s having on the world around us, this conversation is a breath of fresh air that’s focused on solutions instead of problems. In this episode we talk with Bob Kulhan about how he has focused his experience and team at Business Improv to harness the power of improv and translate it into a solution that solves real business problems. He’ll also share more about how their latest solution that is not only preparing people to operate in a virtual and distributed world but creates an opportunity for people to see how to do it in practice. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/learningtechtalks/support

Basketball players wear high tops and gymnasts use lots of tape, but less demanding activities, like the ones you do around the office, require a different, but equally important, type of support.
If a cocaine sniffing hippo starts chasing you, run in a zig-zag because they can only run in a straight line. If an improviser chases you, stay where you are, say "yes, and..." and see what happens.
