Olympic champion Nastia Liukin joins the Lautners to discuss rebuilding yourself after success at a young age and the pressure that comes with competing at the highest level of a sport centered around perfection. Nastia also discusses her time on Special Forces: World's Toughest Test, and talks about the Nastia Liukin Cup, an annual competition offering gymnasts an opportunity to be mentored and to feel proud of their accomplishments—a joy Nastia says shouldn't be reserved for just the 5 girls on the Olympic team. On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2: We kick off season 2 of Rutherford Falls (the final season, as it turns out). Next: S2 E2, "The New Curator."We also kicked off a new season of Dancing with the Stars, now on Disney+, with a preseason special called "Pros' Most Memorable Dances." While it was fun to see some of the dances from years past, we question whether these were truly the most memorable. For example, Catherine nominates this Charleston from Nastia Liukin and Sasha [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkvEjn-tkEI] as her top pick. We also ran down the cast for the upcoming season [https://tvline.com/lists/dancing-with-the-stars-season-31-cast-full-list-dwts/], which premieres Monday, 9/19.

What do athletes have that entrepreneurs and anyone looking to reach max potential can learn from? It's their work ethic. Hardcore, unrelenting, straight up grind-this-sh*t-out work ethic that shows up and does the work Every. Single. Day. Recent numbers report approximately 8% of the American population are millionaires. What's stopping the masses from achieving wealth and success on their own terms? You could say politics, social issues and a lot of other things, but the reality is those reasons are not stopping everyone. Jim Rohn said, “Successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do. Don't wish it were easier; wish you were better.” In this episode, these high level athletes share tips to help you develop a champion mindset. We know how important the work is to do, but consistency is key, and the process includes doing the right things everyday no matter what. “What you create, creates you” Anthony Trucks, Former NFL Athlete Tips to help you develop your champion mindset: 1. Do the right things every day, consistency is key. 2. Dream the big goal and believe you're capable of achieving it. 3. The way you make others feel around you is important. 4. Do the hard things with intention to be prepared. 5. Push through the pain in pursuit of your goals. 6. Be average with extraordinary dreams and desire 7. Always outwork the competition. 8. Help people in their journey to fuel your own journey. 9. Sometimes you have to tap into your dark side. 10. Her clients (past and present) include Shay Mitchell, Ashley Graham, Norah O'Donnell, and Nastia Liukin — among others. In today's episode, she talks to me about how she first got into the fitness industry in college and how different things were back then — training at one point up to 12 people in one day to now, coaching thousands via her KiraStokes Fit App. We talk living a life you want versus the one that may be expected of you, and how trusting her gut helped her navigate some major professional hurdles as well as the COVID pandemic. To celebrate our most popular episode of 2019 - we are replaying our chat with Simone Biles. We caught up with the history-making four-time Olympic champion gymnast at her gym in Houston for an exclusive interview. We also spoke to Olympic champ Nastia Liukin about why she thinks Simone is the greatest of all time.
Episode 10: Lions punter Sam Martin (7:37) stops by to explain how he started kicking, life working in Pizza Hut (16:41) and how his relationship with Nastia Liukin (29:00) has influenced him. Plus, I discuss how Detroit should handle the rest of 2019 and Vikings reporter Ben Goessling (36:15) explains how Minnesota could attack David Blough.
Darrah is a four-time founder, author, and coach who used to cringe at the word "coaching." But she was called to do this and was begged by her first clients to work with them. When they saw massive and transformational results in their lives and businesses, she stopped resisting and continued to serve. After spending 10 years over-working and feeling burnt out while building a credit card processing company into 38 states and a networking events company for over 30,000 people, she learned the wrong way to do it. She then discovered that there was a better way. A prolific writer and interviewer, she's worked with Shaq, Seth Godin, Bobbi Brown, Jillian Michaels, Adam Grant, Robert Herjavec, Nastia Liukin, Cam Newton, and the list goes on, with well over 1 million views of her work. Her motto, "Design your life, build a career to fund it, and a network to support it," has inspired thousands to reach higher and dream bigger. She was even named as #1 to follow by BossBabe Magazine. Show Highlights: You should understand your own intrinsic value before you tie it to things outside of yourself that don't define you in the first place. —Darrah BrusteinI borrowed confidence from people who helped me until I could really embody it for myself. —Darrah BrusteinWhen you create a meditation practice, without you even noticing it, it starts to level you out so that when something happens, it no longer feels like it's the end of the world. —Darrah BrusteinIt's important to surround myself with people who get it—who tell me what I need to hear, not necessarily what I want to hear—and people who are on some sort of journey or path that is similar even if it's not identical. —Darrah BrusteinMy real motto is first, design your life, then reverse engineer your business to elevate and uplift that, then build the network to make it more fun and open the doors. —Darrah BrusteinPeople are the ways that the doors open. —Darrah BrusteinBeing in tune with your intuition is the GPS for life. —Darrah BrusteinIf you've hit a brick wall, go back to the people who know you and love you and borrow the confidence. —Darrah BrusteinAction is the kryptonite to any sort of "stuck-ness." —Darrah BrusteinIf someone offers to help you and you're denying it, deep down, you're rejecting love. —Darrah Brustein Darrah's final thoughts: Movement and momentum is important. When you take one baby step, and then another and another, you've walked a mile. Sometimes you don't realize it, but you have. Just taking those small, simple steps can be all the difference. This is the 100th episode of the show and we wanted to look back at some of the more memorable ‘nobody told me’ lessons our guests have shared with us. We’ve truly been honored to speak with each of our guests and they’ve given us so many wonderful anecdotes and pieces of advice that it’s tough to select highlights. Imagine working towards something for the first couple of decades of your life and that's all you knew. Then at age 22, it all ends. That path has gone and you have to reinvent a new path. That's what happened to Nastia Liukin. Nastia was born a gymnast and went on to win an Olympic gold medal in 2008. Then four years later, she decided to make a run for the 2012 Olympics. After a critical fall from the uneven bars, Nastia had a Why Not Now? moment that will give you chills. Nastia reinvented the vision she had for herself and took action. This woman has grit. She's the entrepreneur of a new mentoring app for female athletes called Grander and she's become quite the online influencer and blogger with a following of more than 2 million people. In this episode, Nastia shares her story and we talk about everything from navigating a 180 degree turn in your career to the topic of quitting, body shaming and mentoring. She also tells us something that her Mom always used to say to her when she wanted to quit, which will have you rethinking your decision when you want to throw in the towel.
This week’s conversation is with Valorie Kondos Field, often referred to as “Miss Val.”She’s the head coach of the six-time NCAA Champion, 21 NCAA Regional Champion and 17-time PAC 12 Champion UCLA Women’s Gymnastics team.Valorie was recently named the Pac-12 “Coach of the Century,” and in 2010, she became one of only two active coaches to be inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame. She considers the late John Wooden, the legendary and most successful collegiate basketball coach of all time, as one of her inspirations, and closest mentor and friend.Countless student-athletes praise Valorie for her guidance during their athletic careers, and after they’ve graduated from UCLA and have entered the next chapter in their lives. Included in the hundreds of athletes she has coached or mentored are Olympic champions Simone Biles, Jordan Wieber, Kyla Ross, Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez and Nastia Liukin. For Valorie, life is a grand adventure that all comes down to choices. The moment she found out she had breast cancer is a prime example of the way she chooses to live her life.In essence, she became grateful that her form of cancer was treatable. Grateful that she could go get chemotherapy for it and she’s continued to live her life that way ever since. In this conversation, we discuss why she doesn’t believe in failure, why being a pessimist is the easy way out, and why gratitude is the most important habit to train.Valerie has an infectious personality and this incredible mindset that, “I get to…” rather than “I have to…” and I think it’s something we can all apply to our own lives.I think you’re really going to love learning from her. This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens.Receive a free 20-count travel pack of Athletic Greens (valued at $99) with any purchase!Claim here: athleticgreens.com/findingmasterySupport for Finding Mastery also brought to you by Health IQ:Health IQ uses science & data to secure lower rates on life insurance for health conscious people including runners, cyclists, strength trainers, vegans, and more.Learn more and get a free quote at healthiq.com/findingmastery

Lauren is working on a show called The Daily Dismount Simone Biles released her emojis - Simoji. Al Trautwig (1:43:00) gave the worst PR interview that confirmed everything we already know about him; he's willfully ignorant, tries not to do his homework, and sees gymnastics as an "esoteric" sport too complicated for the average human. It was like listening to an old white man who hates anything non-baseball. His misogyny was evident when he compared two athletes with legitimate medal chances to each other. His factually correct statements about Gabby Douglas, "didn't look like a gold medalist" and "has fallen off the beam the last two times she's gone" to Sam Mikulak who he says, in stark contrast to Gabby, "every once in a while makes the odd mistake." Funny way to compare two potential medalists when Sam has fallen at almost every single competition he's entered into for years. The rage continues... Despite Kellogg's tweeting to the contrary, Simone will not be walking in the opening ceremonies. Duh. 2015 junior Secret Classic Champion, Laurie "Baby Shakira" Hernandez. Photo © Christy Linder. This week on the podcast, a full recap of the Secret U.S. Classic from glorious Chicago suburbs. Uncle Tim, Lauren, and Jessica chat about the best upgrades, moments, skills and routines, including: Scoring: don't get too excited, there was a stick bonus in place. Text book bars that made our hearts sing: Madison Kocian, Brenna Dowell and Laurie "Baby Shakira" Hernandez. Injuries that took some out and others down: Norah Flatly, Marissa Okaely and Kyla Ross. Which 2000 Babies (also known as juniors who will turn 16 in the Olympic year) will be a major threat for the 2016 Olympic team. Yes, this means we talked all about Ragan "Fievel" Smith. Ashton Locklear and the Mystery of the Zero Scores solved! Bailie Key's premier meet as a senior gymnast! Finally! Brenna Dowell had a rough day with a terrifying beam fall, but we loved her toe-on tkatchev caught in mixed grip to Ezhova! Will this help or hurt her chances of making the World team? Let’s play a game called “What did Skinner’s floor music sound like to you?” Simone Bile's new floor routine (spoiler alert, we loved it!); will Laurie Hernandez and Simone start a new trend in elite floor? What's next for Emily Gaskins and Steve Nunno. Maybe he was too calm and that's what hurt her performance. Gabby Douglas, her competitive excellence, Russian-style podium training, future upgrades and clarifying gymnastics facts for those you didn't know that she meant American Olympic history when she said,"No one has ever done it before." Aly Raisman looked gutted after her mistiming on floor led to a fall, but we saw big improvements from her. Our favorite moments: Abby Paulson's aerial layout series on beam; Trinity Thomas being adopted by Lauren; Maggie Nichols owning the podium; Polina Shchennikova's bars; Simone and her team flying on a private jet; Kaitlin deGuzman's toe point; Deanne Soza, Deanne Soza and DEANNE SOZA! Uncle Tim rages out over Felicia Hano's vault injury. Our weekly roundup of the latest news stories from around the gymternet include: Marta's retirement announcement and our speculation about her replacement. Shawn Johnson got engaged to NFL player Andrew East on a baseball field, but we tell you how we could have proposed to her in a much more gymnastics-appropriate way. The Canadian pop star who is named after Nelli Kim USA Gymnastics President, Steve Penny, awkwardly interviewing Simone Biles. We got a letter from a listener who told us all about training with Steve Penny and Peggy Liddick during the Shannon Miller era at Dynamo in Oklahoma! The Gymternet's best moments from podium training, complete with Gifs! Two women have repeated as the Olympic all-around champion in back to back Olympic Games, Larisa Latynina of Soviet Union in 1956 and 1960, and Vera Caslavaka of Czechoslovakia in 64 and 68. No American all-around gold medalist (we’ve only had four ever!), has ever made a second Olympic team; only one has even officlally tried, Nastia Liukin, by competing at the Olympic Trials. It's pretty common to make another Olympic team. Four Olympic all-around gold medalists have made a second Olympic team after winning all-around good: Larisa Latynina, Věra Čáslavská, Ludmilla Tourischeva, and Nadia Comăneci. 156: Pan Am Games Event Finals and Secret Classic Preview Secret Classic: What Does Success Here Mean 106: Biles and Ross Dominate the 2014 US Secret Classic 2014 Senior Secret Classic Competition Photo Gallery 2014 Junior Secret Classic Competition Photo Gallery Photo Gallery of Podium Training at the 2014 Secret Classic 105: Chicago Secret Classic Preview, Cuba is Back & Nadia Promotes Adult Gymnastics Episode 42: The 2013 Secret US Classic from Chicago Episode 41: Laurie Hernandez & Coach Maggie Haney Episode 9: Chellsie Memmel, Swiss Cup & FIG Presidential Proposals 148: Shannon Miller Episode 28: Kristen Maloney Episode 31: Elise Ray Episode 33: Simone Biles & Her Coaches Episode 48: Kyla Ross 61: Katelyn Ohashi Clears The Air 77: Aly Raisman Texas Dreams' wore a leo that was clearly an ode to the 1990's Unified Team / Soviet splatter paint leotards.
Simone Biles hugs Katelyn Ohashi after winning the 2015 American Cup. This week we are joined by very special guest and World Cup silver medalist, Mary-Anne Monkton of Australia. Uncle Tim, Evan and Jessica recap of the 2015 American Cup in Cowboy Stadium AKA Simone Biles new house: Marta was on the Nastia Cup broadcast doing commentary again and it was fantastic! Oleg gave Uncle Tim the best birthday present ever! MyKayla Skinner crashed her Cheng in podium training and completely missed her hand. (see photo gallery link below). Head Scratcher of the week: How does a gymnast get invited to a World Cup. Read all 16 pages of Rules here or this: The top seven all-around placers at World Championships are invited. If that includes the host country already, the 8th placer is invited. If it doesn't include the host, the 8th spot is reserved for the host. The FIG Executive Committee can invited a 9th wildcard. If after inviting the top eight they don't have eight participants, they then invite placers nine through twelve from Worlds. If they still don't have eight, they then invite each federation in the order they finished in the team competition at World's (up to the eighth place team) to send a gymnast until they get eight. Then the wildcard gymnast is selected by FIG. Do we think it’s fair the way NBC characterizes Simone as unbeatable, as if the pressure doesn’t compound exponentially the more she wins? Debate our favorite moments and best saves of the meet: MyKayla Skinner on beam or perhaps Sam Mikulak on high bar. We give our thoughts on leveraging the host country's music and cultural dances in floor routines. We pretend we are Aimee Boorman and devise a strategy to keep Simone Biles happy, healthy and engaged. We pretend to be Sam Mikulak and devise a plan for him to convert the consistency he had for his NCAA team to his elite career. The High Bar tension controversy: are the men supposed to all use the same tension on the high bar? No, we are asking. We want to know! Nastia Liukin gets her first grade from us as a commentator. Fashion: what did we think of the Nastia Cup leo, and could Nastia's Swarovski crystals on the nails work for the men Friday the 13th of NCAA Gymnastics. Every meet had a terrifying crash. The worst of which was Shelby Hilton from University of Kentucky. We have an update on her and opine that perhaps a little angel named Kylie had something to do with that crash. The Rage-o-Meter ; Trautwig needs to acknowledge that the majority of the gymnasts on the World Cup circuit are in their 20's and that's the new norm. And many women in their 20's make the US Olympic team and even win medals. We launch a new campaign. Joe Walsh - Turn To Stone Those American girls gave brilliant performances on the gym floor in Beijing this year, even when the odds seemed stacked against them. (No way in hell that all of those Chinese girls were at least 15. Just no friggin' way.) I was immediately impressed by Nastia Liukin's elegance and fluidity, but, damn girl, maybe you could smile a little?! I don't think she cracked a grin until she triumphed in the All-around. Perhaps it's a way of psyching out her opponents or something. I don't know. I began to think of her as "Stone Face." So, here's today's flashback, from the 1972 album, Barnstorm, here's Joe Walsh with Turn To Stone, in honor of the Stone Face and her Olympic feats. (Note: I prefer this version of the song to his 1975 reworking on So What.)
