It’s that time of the month again: Q&A time! By now, you probably know the drill. I’ve been taking questions from The Life Stylist Podcast Facebook Group, doing some research, and coming back with the most in-depth answer I can muster. This week, we have two bangers for you. Sarah asks about why we don’t talk about the potential dangers of EMF radiation during regular plane travel, yet freak out about cell towers. Hacking air travel is one of my absolute favorite areas of biohacking, and I have a LOT of experience after 23 years of experimentation. Gabriela follows that up with a question about another one of my favorite things: finding a spring near your new home! If you want to ask a question for a future episode, come join The Life Stylist Podcast Facebook Group. You can watch the next episode live, ask questions to both me and the group, and build a community of like-minded biohackers. Sarah asks: How can you/we justify airplane travel on an annual basis yet freak out over considerably more low-level EMF from cell towers, etc? I think airplanes are so beloved and convenient that we don't give it airtime. I'm assuming it’s like sleeping on a cell tower for X amount of hours you're in a plane. You've got to live your life and travel. The benefits of work trips, seeing loved ones, interacting with and learning from other cultures are worth it Yes, travel trashes your body in many ways, but you can make it much safer by employing a few of these tricks. I'll someday complete my online class: Biohacking my travel: the jet lag solution. I was 1/2 way done with it, then I had to move to escape cell towers, and the project got lost in the shuffle. I will complete the class in the future, and it will change your life. Get on the waitlist here: www.lukestorey.com/travel or text BIOHACKMYTRAVEL to 44222 on any US phone As for EMF on planes, I've tested radiation levels a couple of times, and it's not all that high on flights without wi-fi. You do get gamma radiation from the sun, tons of RF on wi-fi flights, especially with a couple of hundred cell phones searching for service. If you use your laptop, make sure to use the Defender Shield under it, so you don't fry the hell out of your baby-making bits. I wear anti-EMF clothing, take dozens of supplements, and have literally over 150 other hacks I use when I travel, so I’m probably healthier traveling than sitting at home in some cases Living near a cell tower is 100s of times worse for you than sitting on a plane. Trust me. I've done both. If you live in a big city, you probably live close to a few cell towers. If they are 5g, it's even worse. All that being said, remember to think positively, as thoughts and emotions are powerful! Worrying about EMF, toxins, and eventing in the world trying to kill you doubles the damage. So take precautions, but keep your mind right by staying out of the fear/limbic system trauma loop. Here are some powerful tips to make flying less hazardous to your health: Use Quicksilver Scientific melatonin on nights leading up to your flight to adjust yourself into the next time zone by going to sleep as close as you can to your destination time Plan your meals to be aligned with eating times at your destination Use the Human Charger to help beat jet lag and adjust to time zones Same with the Verilux full-spectrum lighting unit Get TSA Precheck, or Global traveler, and Clear in the US to make airport security suck less, and minimize stress. I will ALWAYS opt-out of millimeter-wave screening. It's the same technology as 5G and extremely dangerous. If you have TSA, Global Entry, or Clear, you get to pass through an old-school metal detector, rather than being microwaved. If I can't get an X-ray, I always opt-out and get fondled, rather than walking through a cancer box. If you can afford it, get an upgraded seat and priority boarding. It's worth it to stay chill and preserve your energy. Get up and stretch every single hour, or as often as possible. Flight attendants sometimes get pissed when you stand near the restrooms, so I usually wait until they are doing their rounds, then sneak up front for some plane yoga. Great for circulation and restlessness. Buy bottled water inside the airport, bring it on the plane, then use Vital Reaction hydrogen tabs. I do four tablets every 90 min when I fly. Usually, Evian, Fiji, and Pellegrino are the best waters available at airports. Never, ever drink water, coffee, or tea on airplanes. The storage tank water is toxic. They use very caustic chemicals to flush the storage tanks, and if they don't do that, often, the water is contaminated with bacteria. Not to mention it's disgusting tap water in the first place, even if it's clean. I would only drink tap water if I were dying alone in the desert. Wear earplugs, even in airports, and for sure during flights, as loud noise is stressful You can also wear noise-canceling headphones while flying, even without music or audio, just as stress protection. Meditate as much and as often as possible while flying, to ease stress. Also listening to uplifting podcasts like this one, and spiritual audiobooks or guided meditations are great to keep your nervous system in rest mode. I like to use the NuCalm. Sleep as much as humanly possible on flights to preserve energy. Wear blue-blocking glasses the entire time on planes. If it's daytime, wear clear blue blockers by Ra Optics or BluBlox. If it's nighttime at your destination, wear the super dark Trudark wrap around glasses. All indoor lighting is junk lighting. All light coming through glass is artificial blue light. Plus, the seat-mounted TV's and all the devices emit tons of toxic blue light as well. I always plug in my Blushield cube and Somavedic travel unit for EMF and general energetic harmony while flying (and driving for that matter) You can also use a Blushield pocket model rather than the bigger EMF units Use dusk and dawn sun gazing to adjust to time zones quickly Do cryo/ Vitamin IV's/ NAD IV, before and after travel Hyperbaric Oxygen before and after Ozone IV Use Joovv red light therapy to help with mitochondria and inflammation EMF proof clothes, especially a beanie, and Lambs underwear For plane air, you can periodically huff essential oils to kill germs. Try On Guard by Doterra. It kills every bug on contact. Portable Air Filters are cool to fly with too. Also, wash your hands a lot during flights. Planes are disgusting. I also huff Oxygen canisters on flights. TSA hates them, but I've only had mine taken away once. Breathwork- Before and after I fly, I love to get my barefoot on the ground and do some breath work, to raise my oxygen levels. You can also ground on the plane, by keeping your bare feet, or cotton socks on the metal frame of the seat in front of you, or plugging a grounding strap into the ground input in your seat outlet if you have one. Some experts say grounding this way sucks some love it. I can't get a straight answer. Try the foot method to be safe. Stay in Ketosis before, during, and after flights by water fasting or just going carb/sugar-free the entire days you fly Quicksilver Scientific Keto Before Six makes it super easy to stay keto Megadose Quicksilver Scientific liposomal glutathione before, during, and after flight for oxidative stress Bulletproof Brain Octane small bottles are great for travel to get good fats in and keep food cravings away I always bring the Biomat or the Therasage heating pad to keep my back pain and inflammation own on flights Compression clothes, especially Comrad compression socks After you land, find a natural body of water as soon as possible and take a swim to ground your body, or take an ice bath and hot bath and sauna. Finding a Russian spa is excellent for this. Another great hack is to run a hairdryer over your entire body when you get to your hotel, to neutralize any static electricity that built up during the flight Here are some of my other favorite travel supplements: Kratom for back pain Qualia for alertness and focus Modafinil is my #1 jet lag supplement due to its ability to erase sleep debt so powerfully. Natural Stacks MagTech magnesium. I megadose this when I travel to combat stress, help with sleep, and help protect against EMF I like to add Mega Hydrate to my water to upgrade hydration. Don't use it at the same time as mega hydrate because, for some reason, it stops the mega hydrate from activating and creating hydrogen gas. Liquid Chlorophyll drops for bioavailable copper, which helps with radiation exposure Oceans Alive marine phytoplankton, because of its high SOD (superoxide dismutase) content, which is a powerful antioxidant Four Sigmatic instant coffee, for fasting Organifi green juice in your water bottle for alkalinity Nutrex Astaxanthan capsules to protect you from UV exposure while flying and traveling. It's like an internal sunscreen. Unfair Advantage ampules by Bulletproof for energy. Great for travel. Quicksilver Scientific 'The One' is the best energy supplement, but it goes bad if it gets hot, so it's tricky. The same goes for my all-time favorite supplement called NAD+, also by Quicksilver Scientific. It's a NAD precursor that is incredible for stress recovery and fatigue. I also love Piracetam for flying due to its ability to increase oxygen levels in the brain Another one is Blue Cannatine by Troscriptions. The tablets contain methylene blue, nicotine, CBD, and caffeine. It’s incredible for travel, due to its neuron protective qualities. Lastly, I like to take fish oil or cod liver oil while flying to help thin blood, and as a result, increase circulation When flying, my main goals are reducing inflammation and keeping hydrated. Gabriela weighs in with another question: Hey everybody! I just moved to Lake Tahoe, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good spring to get drinking water from in the area? Thanks for your help! The spring I go to there is called Boca Springs, find it on findaspring.com get the water tested though, as the rangers told me it was tainted. I drank about 30 gallons of it and lived to tell the tale, however. Always test your water at WATERCHECK.COM to make sure it's safe. Why? Here are a couple of reasons: “Crystal Geyser Pleads Guilty to Dumping Arsenic into California's Ecosystem for 15 Years” & “U.S. drinking water widely contaminated with 'forever chemicals': environment watchdog” Also, get my complete guide to water FREE at lukestorey.com/129 or text THE WATER GUIDE to 44222 on any US phone. There you will also find 7 hours of podcasts all about spring water, bottled water, filters, etc. on episode 129, 130, and 131 featuring Daniel Vitalis and others. Learn the difference between a real spring and a creek or stream. Never drink from a body of water that is above ground. Springs must be collected from the source, which is usually a pipe that's been placed there by people who use the spring. If there is a local spring, you can usually find it by asking the hippies at the local mom and pop health food store. If a spring is safe, it's common to see people collecting water there. Fundamental wisdom says if a whole town has been drinking from a spring, it's likely safe. However, if you find a spring, you want to use ongoing, get the water tested. My friend Chris, the owner of Livespringwater.com, once showed me a spring right here in the Hollywood Hills, and when we had, it tested they found some traces of bacteria. So be careful and use discernment, but in general, springs are safe. The best spring water usually comes from high altitude springs and rocky mountains. If you like filtered water, imagine water that's been filtered by 10,000 feet of rock, inside a mountain, as compared to 10 inches of filter medium in your Berkey or whatever. There are some delusional conspiracy theorists online that will tell you that all springs are toxic because they are polluted with acid rain and chemicals, but let me tell you, in most cases, it's a million times its safer than the water in all of your commercial soups, kombucha, beer, wine, sodas, or any drinks made from tap water, filtered or not, including most cheap bottled water. The foremost anti-spring water hater out there scares everyone away from collecting this nectar of the gods because he likes to collect commission checks for the filters he promotes. All of us influencers make affiliate commissions. Nothing wrong with that, as everyone wins, but it's unfortunate that some people use hate, fear tactics, and misinformation to make a sale. Some spring water is toxic and acid rain free because it is what's called 'primary water' - water that has NEVER touched the surface of the earth, or it has not been on the surface since before the industrial revolution and is therefore free of chemicals, or acid rain. Some companies market water as 'spring water,' when in fact, it is water that is pumped from underground aquifers, much like crude oil. This type of water is much more likely to be contaminated by acid rain, pesticides, and other runoff from groundwater. Again, if you want to make sure you water is safe, collect a sample, and send it to WATERCHECK.COM As for filters, if you cannot get clean spring water, the best I've found are Ophora Water (whole house and under sink filters) and Pristine Hydro (under sink filters) Both are insanely sophisticated and effective. Both on my site. My #1 choice of water, and what I drink at home is livespringwater.com, which is currently only available for delivery in CA If you find a safe spring, you can buy 2.5 or 5-gallon glass carboys (huge bottles) at a home brewing store. Make sure to keep your spring water-covered, away from light, as it can grow algae after some time if it gets sun. That's because it has a life force in it that hasn't been burned away with chemicals or UV light. Again for everything you need to know about spring water, my favorite bottled waters, filters, etc. go back to episodes 129, 130, and 131. Your best bet is to just download my complete guide to water at lukestorey.com/129 , or by texting THE WATER GUIDE to 44222 on any US phone. More about this episode. For our first Q&A of 2020, we’re going to take a hard look at how you can get closer to nature when your job or environment makes that difficult to impossible — plus, I share a little bit about the vices I have and continue to struggle with. If you want to ask a question for a future episode, come join The Life Stylist Podcast Facebook Group. You can watch the next episode live, ask questions to both me and the group, and build a community of like-minded biohackers. Alyssa wants to know: For those of us that drive a lot for work, what can we do about getting sun through the glass? Any hacks for not getting full-spectrum? Go check out my past episodes on light with Matt Maruca: Episode 137 and Episode 234. Also you can look forward to Episode 278 coming May 5th, 2020, with Dr. Alexander Wunsch for the deepest dive EVER on natural Vs. artificial light. I drive with a window cracked or the sunroof cracked to let in as much natural light as possible. Turn heat on or use it for some cold therapy. I also have all 6 of my windows tinted even the front a little bit. to cut down glare, fake blue light, in daytime and oncoming headlights at night. All glass blocks out UVB, creating artificial light, which is not healthy for the skin or eyes. Essentially, when sunlight passes through glass, it makes non-native blue light. so there is no such thing as ’natural lighting’ if you are behind glass. Sunscreens work the same way, which is how they can contribute to skin cancer. If you cannot use shade or clothing to protect yourself from the sun, look for non-toxic , “broad spectrum” sunscreen to make sure the formula protects against UVA rays as well as UVB. Same for both sunglasses and Rx glasses and contacts. I avoid wearing both whenever possible. I find hats work great to block direct sun in my eyes. Tinting glass reduces the amount of both visible and UVA transmitted through it. Some UVA still gets through, though. On average, 60–70% of UVA still penetrates tinted glass. Sometimes glass is treated to protect against UVA. For example, most sunglasses made from glass are coated so they block both UVA and UVB. The laminated glass of automobile windshields offers some (not total) protection against UVA. Automotive glass used for side and rear windows ordinarily does not protect against UVA exposure. Similarly, the window glass used in homes and offices does not filter much UVA. Your best bet is to always do your best to allow some natural, unfiltered light through cracked windows in your car and at home. In a perfect world, we would get as much natural daylight as possible. In my car I also set all the interior lighting to amber, so there is minimal blue light blasting me in the face when I drive at night. Some other auto biohacks include: I use an air purifier in the car to help with the air pollution that gets in — choosing between the sunlight and the potential pollution is a tough call Ground your car. This helps with static charge inside the vehicle, which ads to the EMF load Also turn off the WiFi in your car, turn off the hot spot if you have one Hard wire your phone and leave bluetooth. Apps like apple car play won’t work like this, so you have to decide if you prefer the convenience or the healthiest ride. For additional EMF protection I use both Somavedic & Blushield units plugged into the car. While they dont ‘block ‘ EMFs, they both help create a more harmonious field in the cabin. It’s also smart to wear EMF protective clothing on long road trips. Lambs underwear are a great start, and you can add their beanie to your outfit as well. I also just added an EMF blocking hoodie to my site made by No Choice When I take road trips, I also bring along my nanoVI and also my Vital Reaction molecular hydrogen generator to alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation that occur from flying through space and time at 80mph. These two are expensive interventions, so not for everyone. You can also bring along some Vital Reaction hydrogen tablets to add to your water on road trips. I do 4 tabs in a water bottle every 90 min or so both flying and driving. Another great tip is to stop and get your bare feet on the ground periodically. This dissipates static charge from your body and reduces inflammation. I also love to stop on road trips and do cold plunges in rivers, lakes, and oceans. This gives you a boost of energy , and leases the pain of sitting for long periods of time Alysa also asks about hacks for getting closer to or simulating nature, for when you live in a cold environment and it’s not always possible to be outside due to freezing temps: My advice would be to move somewhere that’s not cold in the winter. Easier said than done, I get it. Tanning beds that have both UVA and UVB are awesome in winter if you could find a low EMF one, but could be tough. I have searched for safe tanning beds many times, and still can't find one. If you supplement D3 don't take it in a synthetic, isolated form. It's always better to get from something like cod liver oil. The one i take is by Rosita. It’s non toxic, environmentally sustainable, not rancid, and contains naturally occurring micronutrients such as vitamin A and D. There is a lot of debate about taking fish oils, which are PUFAS or polyunsaturated fatty acids. There are experts on both sides of this, with the vast majority of people voting yes on certain fish oils, and sources of DHA and omega 3’s. I do think its really smart to take a high quality vitamin E supplement to counteract some of the possible negative effects of PUFAS. You could do the Human Charger blue light therapy in your ears for seasonal affective disorder. Also the Verilux full spectrum winter light. I use this on early mornings, and also every time I travel to get bright, full spectrum blue light in my eyes (don't stare into the light, just keep it nearby during sessions). Red light therapy and infrared saunas both provide the red spectrum of light you’ll like miss in winter months. IR saunas, or even outdoor barrel saunas can be great in the winter, as again, they allow you to be outside for short periods of time, in between sessions. Do breathwork everyday so you can handle the cold long enough to get light in your eyes and on your body. Doing cryo and ice baths in the warmer months will also drive up your cold tolerance powerfully. Another great way to get outdoors for fresh air and natural light is to find hot springs or hot tubs outside to use in winter. This way, you are warm, but getting some outside time in also. Another downside to being indoors in the winter is breathing processed air. Just like processed food and water, when we bring air in from outside and make it warm or cold, it is altered. Air inside the home is often much more toxic than the air outside, so it's always smart to have a filter or two inside your home. I like the Molekule best, based on lots of research, but I’ve yet to buy one myself. I’m still using my Austin Air healthmate units, which are great, but they are only HEPA. They don't do anything for mold, bacteria, germs, etc. like the Molekule does. John B wants to know: What are your vices? I have a lot of experience with addictions of all types. You name it, I’ve probably been addicted to it. Due to early trauma, and the mental and emotional issues that I developed as a result, I spent most of my teens and twenties taking anything I could to mask the pain of being me. When i quit drugs and alcohol in 1997, I spent years un-hooking myself from other addictive behaviors around food, negative thinking and emotions, tobacco, sex, and compulsive spending. Over the years, as I have done so much inner work toward healing my past, I have found it less and less necessary to use additions to ease my pain. When there is less pain, then the pain killers tend to fade away. That said, in the spirit of honesty and transparency, i'll keep it real and answer honestly: At this point, my vices at times are using self care and biohacking as a way to escape and avoid unwanted feelings, or as a form of procrastination. It's tricky because I do so many things that are positive and healthy, but I still struggle to find balance. I still see myself doing healthy things in a sometimes obsessive, or compulsive way. it's easy to justify vices like mine, because they are mostly positive. So I would say my top vice is the rituals of health and self-care. I also crave sugar a lot sometimes. I find eating a high fat diet, helpful, and also using my ozone generator to keep systemic fungus as bay is helpful for sugar cravings. The next vice, and probably the worst one, is staying up late. I struggled with this my entire life. I just refuse to go to bed at a decent hour most of the time and this creates a major problem with my cortisol/melatonin balance and circadian rhythm in general. The only solution that has helped me with this is forcing myself to get up and watch the sun rise a few days in a row. This resets my schedule like magic, but it's harder to do now that I live in a canyon where the sun doesn’t shine much. This leads to another vice, which is procrastination. When I stay up to late, it takes me a long ass time to get energized and ready in the morning, so I end up starting my work day much later than I would prefer. I could get a lot more done if I was able to get to sleep and wake earlier. Lastly, I find that my phone addiction is very troubling at times. If im not careful, I can easily fall into social media vortexes and an hour will go by before I pull my head up and break the hypnotic trance the phone put me in. This is one I'd really like to get a grip on, as it’s so obviously a waste of time. All that said, I have made tons of progress in the past 23 years of recovery, and for the most part, my vices at least only have a negative impact on me, rather than those around me. It’s been helpful to answer this question and reflect on this as i enter 2020. My goal and hope is to curb some of this behavior and find more balance in my life. What can you do to counter some of the effects of flying across multiple time zones? Find out in this week's Insights as I zero in on jetlag. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/topic/podcasts/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The 4 things you can do to counter the effect of jetlag The 2 factors that impact your circadian rhythm and jetlag How the Human Charger works Key Takeaways: The two big factors that impact circadian rhythm and jetlag are light and movement. Light is what dictates our circadian rhythm. When it comes to combating jetlag, using light is absolutely critical. Action Steps: As soon as you board a plane, change the time on your watch to the time of your destination so you can already start to mentally adapt to what time it's going to be when you land. When you're onboard a flight across time zones, try to avoid eating at the times when they serve you because they serve those foods at your time of origin. Eat healthy snacks that are not particularly blood sugar-elevating during your flight. When you get to your destination and it's 8 AM but you think it's 3 AM, get as much exposure to natural light as you can and force yourself awake. When the afternoon comes, at around 3 or 4 PM, get a pair of blue light blocking glasses over your eyes. When you get to your destination, make sure to do lots of movement. How can we overcome stressors in our daily life? Bob Troia is back on the show to talk more about training and how to handle things such as travel and jetlag. Find out what strategies you can implement and more! Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/topic/podcasts/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: What recovery means How we get microtrauma How to handle travel, jetlag, and EMF exposure The molecular hydrogen and why it’s good for you Amino acids for training and workouts The minimal effective dose for training and for exercise What hacks you can do to get the most out of your training in a limited amount of time Key Takeaways: Recovery is getting your body back to where it should be. Molecular hydrogen has really great systemic effects in the body. When we work out, we cause a degree of inflammation in the muscles. If we take antioxidants close to that exercise session, we might blunt the hormetic response of exercise. However, molecular hydrogen is a selective antioxidant, which makes it really great after a workout. Action Steps: Take molecular hydrogen to combat stressors when you’re traveling or when you’re working out. Get your circadian rhythm in check. Take amino acids pre and post workout. Bob said: “With air travel, it’s just about trying to mitigate whatever it’s throwing at [you].” “You don’t have to be on a treadmill for an hour a day, 6 days a week. You just go in there and you knock it out.” Thanks for listening! Can one device eliminate your jet lag forever? Jari Koponen discusses the value of the Human Charger in battling the winter blues and jet lag. Who is Jari Koponen? Jari Koponen is a Brand Ambassador of HumanCharger. Before joining HumanCharger in 2014, Jari spent more than a decade in different roles in the automation industry delivering and taking care of systems in the mining sector. After that, between 2012 and 2014, he was full time at home with kids. While Jari very much enjoyed the global mining business, it was the constant long haul traveling that eventually motivated Jari to change the direction of his career. For a period of time, the opportunity to travel the world and to visit exotic mines (gold, copper, platinum, and others) in some of the most remote places on earth felt like a privilege for Jari but eventually the almost never-ending jet-lag and long stretches away from home was not worth the effort. Nevertheless, it was that first hand experience with the jet lag that connected Jari with the HumanCharger. When Jari had an opportunity to use the HumanCharger in 2013, while travelling cross 9 time zones, his experience with that "strange device" was so positive (he felt hardly any jet lag!) that after the trip, Jari made it clear to the HumanCharger team that he wants to join them and go out to tell everyone what an amazing device HumanCharger is. And since then Jari has been on mission! In his role at HumanCharger, Jari is responsible of the marketing efforts (among other things) and you can find him for example at HumanCharger booth at conferences around the world. Jari has a Master of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering from Helsinki University of Technology (today Aalto University, Finland) and MBA from Helsinki School of Economics (also today Aalto University). What are some of the ways that we can optimise our health while living in an unnatural world? Mr. Health Optimisation, Tim Gray, talks about using technology to mimic the natural environment and some of the best biohacks for busy professionals. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Biohacking and some of the best biohacks for busy professionals Using technology to mimic the natural environment Grounding The negative effect of blue light and what you can do about it Getting back to the basics of health optimisation Metabolomics The benefits of red light therapy Tips for jet lag Metabolic flexibility Key Takeaways: Biohacking is the use of science, technology, and nature to optimise your health. It has increased in size and reach, and turning a lot of heads in lots of industries because it’s quantifiable. Biohacking is about using your common sense of going, ‘Here’s the stuff I’m doing and here’s how I feel and here’s the data that backs it up,’ and saying, ‘Well, actually, what other areas should I test subjectively? And then see what I can quantify through data?’ Grounding or connecting with the earth is apparently a great antioxidant and good for sleep. Red light therapy is brilliant for healing. Metabolomics is the future health care. It’s looking at the body at the cellular level and seeing what your cells are deficient of. Hydration, sleep, and sunlight are really the three key things to health optimisation, plus metabolic flexibility. Action Steps: Get to the basics of optimising your health. Look at your genetics and see if there’s anything in the MTHFR specifically that needs optimising. Make sure that your hydration is correct. Have the proper mineralised water and the right minerals. Make sure your nutrition is correct. Eat organic, naturally-grown foods. Optimise your sleep by making sure that your light exposure is correct. Get natural light during the day and minimise blue light exposure by wearing blue light blocking glasses in the evening Take responsibility for your own health. Focus on the basics before you even think about buying any new technology. Personalise your diet. Tim said: “Biohack is a quirky term for health optimisation, and it’s about using your environment, supplements, or whatever necessary to optimise your health, and often through tracking it through data as well so you can quantify what you’re actually doing.” “My number one biohack is sleep optimisation... [Without proper sleep], your body doesn’t heal, your brain doesn’t work correctly, you don’t have the energy.” Thanks for listening! What is junk light and how does it affect the quality of our sleep? What does it have to do with our overall mood and energy? TrueDark CEO Jenna Keane talks about what people can do about junk light in their own homes and in their own lives. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: How blue light and green light interfere with our sleep How TrueDark came to be The problems that people experience from too much blue light exposure What happens in your brain when you wear blue light blocking glasses The types of glasses that block blue light What the HumanCharger does Strategies to mitigate jet lag How to help stop the junk light in your environment Key Takeaways: The concept of blue light being bad for humans was actually discovered back in the ’70s by NASA, and the issue was that you can get too much blue light from things like electronics. Blue light tells your body that it’s too bright outside, so the body doesn’t recognize that it’s already night time and you end up not getting enough sleep. Studies show that there’s a sensor in our eyes called melanopsin that is sensitive not only to blue light but also to green light. If you want to go to sleep quickly and stay asleep and sleep deeply, blocking both blue and green lights an hour or two before sleep is really, really important. When you block the blue and green light, you see the world through red. And when your body has these lights being filtered, it thinks it’s dark. Blue light is not necessarily bad for you. But getting too much blue light at the wrong time of the day or in the evening, that’s what can have a negative impact on your sleep and your health overall. We don’t just absorb light through our eyes, we also absorb light through our skin. Action Steps: Wind down at night by putting on the blue light blocking glasses. Aim to get a solid two to three hours of natural sunlight outside, ideally in the morning. Consider using a HumanCharger to increase your energy levels. Make sure that your sleeping area or your bedroom is totally dark by using blackout curtains. If you have an electric clock in your bedroom, unplug it, or choose one that has red lettering and that is dimmable and dim it as low as you can. Before bed, keep the lights out, or get a lamp that has a red bulb. Use halogens or incandescent lights instead of fluorescent lights in your house. Jenna said: “When you have companies like Apple and Samsung and Android making filters to tone down the amount of blue that’s in their products at night because they recognize that it’s a problem, that says that this is a universal, international problem.” “Everyone has different reactions to light. Some people are super light sensitive, others are not. But when it comes down to it, sleep is a universal thing… If you have a challenge in your life, start with your sleep because it impacts everything else.” Thanks for listening! Aubrey Marcus is the CEO and founder of Onnit, a company dedicated to human optimization and peak performance. I like what Aubrey had to say because it’s not just what you’d typically think of when you hear the words “optimize” or “peak performance.” He says, “You gotta live a life that’s worth living. Live a life that’s well-rounded, balanced and includes the things like having a glass of wine or smoking a joint and making love to your lover, playing with your dog and hanging out, but also being extremely productive, also meditating, also eating right, also training like a beast." And his philosophy is backed up by clinical studies. He really has the science to prove his theories. So I'm testing them all. It’s only natural to have the blues in the winter months when the days are shorter and there is less available sunlight. This mild form of seasonal affective disorder can be exacerbated by long hours working indoors, shift work or even long-distance travel. Jusso Nissilä was studying neurobiology at the University of Oulu in 2005 when he made the connection between the photosensitivity of the human brain and the potential to deliver bright light therapy through the ear. Jusso founded Valkee in 2007, and by 2010, the HumanCharger was ready to go to market. Using the device for 12 minutes each day has been proven to increase energy levels, improve mood and increase mental alertness. To date, the HumanCharger has 70,000 users worldwide. Today Jusso explains how he came to invent the HumanCharger, the benefits of using the device, and the science behind how light therapy affects the brain. He covers the research studies around recovery from jetlag and reaction time in athletes. Listen in to understand why Valkee has been transparent in delivering its findings to customers and how you can improve your cognitive function, mood and energy with the HumanCharger. STDs – Success requires Tools and Devotion (and action) Great humans say great things…it’s a fact. I mean, a lot of people say things that make sense or are inspiring, but the ones that have impacted their communities or actually changed the world have always been happy to share hints at how they did it. Here, have a listen: “Well done is better than well said” -Benjamin Franklin | “An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied.” -Arnold Glaslow | “There is only one proof of ability – action.” -Marie Ebner-Eschenbach. Ever wonder why we tend to look at these nuggets of brilliance as “cool quotes” instead of taking them to heart? These treasure maps are handed out all the time and yet when you read the lines above, you probably said to yourself, “well, those are cool quotes about taking action.” Humans are scared of their own potential and, even more so, scared that if they actually put their all into something it could blow up in their face. Well here’s a sentiment we’d like to spread: Unless failing means that you die (we don’t recommend that), all you’re doing by failing is getting closer to succeeding. If you thought that paragraph above was an introduction to a next-level Squadcast from the 5 O’Clock Hustle, you may be confused but you’re still right. This podcast was created to give people (including the hosts) what they need to reach new heights. We interview great humans every week and without fail they provide us with something special – expert learnings, unique perspectives, tricks to creating results, lessons from terrible stories that we can now avoid, all of it! Straight from the 5OH team to your eyes, your ears; don’t listen in for quotes. Listen to learn and to grow. That’s what we try to do and we’re excited to ride this wave together. These past few weeks we spoke with some truly great humans that shared their tips for taking action and utilizing the tools available. Perfect listening to start your day off with energy and focus. Listen with intention and see what you can get out of it. No quotes about it. Oh and we can’t say this enough – please take 30 seconds to leave reviews and feedback! It’s really hard to make sure you’re getting what you want out of this podcast without knowing what you want ;) Help me help you. Thanks so much! My guest today, Chris Keane, talks about 40 Years of Zen, which helps people reach an advanced Zen state in just five days. You can gain enlightenment and clarity, and train your brain to function in remarkable ways through this program. Chris is also an expert in issues surrounding blue light, and was instrumental in creating TrueDark technology as part of Biohacked’s mission to stop junk light. Tune in to learn how to get better sleep and hack your brain for increased performance! Find Out More About Chris Here: Chris Keane on LinkedIn 40 Years of Zen Biohacked In This Episode: [02:37] - Chris talks about 40 Years of Zen, which helps people accomplish in five days what a monk could do in 40 years. [05:40] - What is different about the brain of a monk who has meditated on a mountaintop for 40 years, or someone with a super high-performing brain, compared to the rest of us? [08:30] - Chris describes the experience of going into one of their neurofeedback pods for the first time. [09:44] - On a practical level, what’s the result for someone who has gone through the five-day 40 Years of Zen process? [12:52] - Chris talks about flow states, then explores his background in motorcycle racing and how that led to the work he does now. [14:47] - Did Chris ever get hurt during his time doing motorcycle racing? [16:12] - We hear more about what happens across the five days of Chris’ 40 Days of Zen program. [18:38] - Chris has just mentioned having one moment that was the most magnificent moment of Chris’ life by far; what was that moment? He shares this powerful experience, and talks about the impact it has had on his life. [25:15] - We hear more about how Chris’ magnificent moment changed his life, specifically his work relationships. [26:11] - Stephan shares his own history with macro flow states and experiencing different realms of consciousness. [28:53] - Does the 40 Years of Zen program carry over into the rest of your life, even months or years after going through the program? [30:06] - Chris talks about sensory deprivation experiences and whether he thinks people tend to get value out of them. [33:16] - Stephan talks about his powerful experience in a float tank at Just Float in Pasadena, CA. [36:10] - One of the things that Chris has been looking at is using sensory deprivation tanks coupled with neurofeedback to boost ability to do neural programming. [37:19] - Chris has already talked about alpha-wave flow states; are there also flow states in other kinds of brain waves? [40:56] - Chris describes the difference between training for a delta state and lucid dreaming. [41:35] - What is a specific example of a powerful breakthrough that came out of theta brainwave training for Chris? [43:13] - Chris uses two types of EEG monitoring during the 40 Years of Zen program. [45:12] - We hear about Chris’ experience with a SPECT scan. [46:39] - Does Chris have any resources he wants to recommend to listeners in the area of neurofeedback, brain training, etc.? [48:57] - We dive into the TrueDark side of things, with Chris going over the science behind the product. [53:13] - Screens aren’t the only things that emit blue light, Chris explains. The light that comes out of a bright white LED light is all blue, for example. [54:16] - Chris offers listeners a generous gift: 10% off the TrueDark glasses. To take advantage of this offer, go to biohacked.com/geek! [55:02] - How did Chris and Dave Asprey decide to form a business together? [56:57] - Chris explains how the TrueDark glasses work in terms of treating and reducing jet lag. [59:18] - Using a smartphone in bed without taking steps to minimize the blue light is basically causing brain damage, Chris says. If you've ever found yourself stumbling to reach the finish line and you often fail to achieve your most important goals (don't worry, you're no different than the 92% of people who also don't achieve their goals), the problem isn't you, it isn't lack of "willpower," and it's not because you don't have any motivation. The problem is that you haven't properly defined your purpose. I’m incredibly excited about this interview because it’s with Tony Horton, one of the top personal trainers and fitness celebrities in the world who created P90X the most successful home fitness program on the planet. He also designed the rest of the P90X series, P90, and 22 Minute Hard Corps, just to name a few of his insanely popular Beachbody programs. But more importantly than his fitness accomplishments and business enterprises, I’m excited to have Tony on this program because he is one of the most inspirational people I know and one of the few "celebrities" that I actually consider a virtual mentor and admire. Rarely does a day go by when Tony’s work doesn’t influence me in one way or another whether it’s being inspired by his book “The Big Picture” to originally begin my podcast over 3 years ago, or getting yelled at by him at 6:30 every morning while doing burpees. In our conversation we talk all about another of Tony’s passions: Finding Your Purpose. We talk through the negative mindsets that many people create to stop them from achieving their goals and how to overcome those obstacles and barriers. Even if you have absolutely no interest whatsoever in taking on a fitness program, this conversation could change the way you approach your goals and inspire you to step outside your comfort zone to become a better version of you. I'm commonly asked, "How in the world do you balance so many different projects at once?" In this episode I give away my secret weapon and the foundation of my entire productivity system - GTD. » Click here to download a summary of the GTD system plus a visual flowchart In my never ending quest to eliminate as much busy work from my life as possible and take clear action towards my goals, I've spent years navigating the world of productivity and learning everything I can (hence my obsession with Trello). There are so many tools, apps, websites, and resources to help organize your to-do lists, but the fatal flaw of every single one of these tools is just that - they are just tools. If you are truly interested in learning how to not only get more things done, but also ensure that you get the RIGHT things done, you need more than a shiny tool or a fancy to-do list app: You need a system. And in my opinion, the system that is going to - help you clarify your goals, organize your next actions, and most importantly clear the cobwebs in your head so you free up space to be creative again - is the GTD system developed by my guest David Allen. Whether your tool of choice is Trello, OmniFocus, or even post-it notes, the GTD system can help alleviate tremendous amounts of stress and anxiety, avoid the never ending busy work, and get you on track to accomplishing your life's work. If you work in a creative profession and put your heart and soul into everything you do, burnout (and ultimately depression) seems inevitable. You work crazy hours, you eat crap, your deadlines are insane, and you're stuck in front of a computer for what seems like an eternity. But creative burnout isn't as inevitable as you might think. Even though you may feel like you're spinning your wheels, you aren't getting any closer to achieving your goals, and your colleague with half the talent is getting paid twice as much and advancing twice as fast as you, there are specific things you can do to overcome creative burnout and make more significant progress towards achieving your true goals. In this episode I have an in-depth conversation with Eric Barker, author of "Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong" about why creative burnout is so common in our 24/7 technology addicted go-go-go society, and more importantly, what you can do about it. It's no secret: Sitting all day just plain sucks. But when working an intensely creative job for long hours, what other options do you have? The good news is there are now TONS of options, and if you're not sure where to start, this episode is your first step. If you have any interest in leveling up your energy, your focus, your mental stamina (and possibly even saving your life), you'll want to listen to this conversation with my guest Dr. Kelly Starrett, author of the New York Times bestseller ‘Becoming a Supple Leopard,' which has revolutionized how coaches, athletes, and everyday humans approach movement and athletic performance. He is also author of the book 'Deskbound: Standing Up to a Sitting World,' as well as the co-founder of San Francisco Crossfit and MobilityWOD.com where he shares his innovative approach to movement, mechanics, and mobility. He works with elite Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, as well as players from the NFL, NHL, NBA, and Major League Baseball. To put it simply, Kelly is as badass as it gets, and I consider one of my greater accomplishments in life getting this guy in front of a mic to chat with me for an hour (even if his wife did choose to do the dishes in the background for a few minutes). In this episode we talk about Kelly’s book Deskbound and really dig deep into the science behind what’s happening to our bodies when we sit for too long, but more importantly we talk about ways you can change your environment to become more active and create what he calls a ‘movement rich space.’ If you have any interest in escaping your desk chair, this episode is the place to start. Creativity and mental health issues go together like peanut butter and jelly...or do they? According to the"Mad Genius Paradox," that may not be as true as we think. In the inaugural episode of the Optimize Yourself podcast I dive deep into the connection between creativity and mental health with Dr. Edison de Mello, the founder of the Akasha Center for Integrative Medicine in Santa Monica, CA. Dr. D is one of the foremost experts in the country in integrative medicine and is literally one of the people who wrote the book on becoming board certified in this field. He is also the reason I’m still alive today, which you’ll learn more about more in this episode. Being a self-proclaimed workaholic I’ve fought my share of depression and burnout for two decades now, and it was very important to me for Dr. de Mello to be my first guest because I’ve discovered how rampant mental health issues are in creative fields like mine, and more importantly how difficult it is for people to reach out and ask for help because of all the stigmas that come with depression and burnout. If you’ve ever felt like you’re broken, weak, or that there’s something wrong with you, I ask you to please reconsider after listening to this conversation, because you are none of those things. Not only are you not broken or weak, if you work in a creative industry, what you are experiencing is not the exception, it’s most likely the rule. Dr. D. and I are going to help you understand what you are battling both emotionally and biologically, and more importantly, the steps you can take to get better for the long term. Balancing yourself is a fundamental component of the Optimize Yourself program, and I hope this episode helps you find some balance in your own life. Dr. de Mello’s PhD dissertation, entitled “Gut Feelings – A Psychosocial Approach to Gastrointestinal Illness,” inspired his conception of a center where psychology would be combined and fully integrated with Western and Eastern medicines. The de Mello Institute was formed in 1996 with the goal of employing safe and complementary approaches to healthcare while also addressing a person’s emotional and spiritual health. Fully committed to these goals, Dr. de Mello entered residency in 1999 at the prestigious Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center Urban Family Residency program in New York City, including training at the Manhattan-based Center for Health and Healing. If you're a "creative professional" the chances are extremely high that you live in the dark. As a film editor, I have to spend all day in a dark room...it's just a requirement of the job. And while many people in my profession like to joke about occasionally exposing themselves to that "funny glowing ball in the sky," there's nothing funny about the long term effects of not getting enough exposure to light (anxiety, depression, and burnout being on the short list). But if your career requires you to live inside a dark room all the time, there's nothing that can be done, right? Not so fast. Thanks to a new light therapy device called The "HumanCharger" (use the coupon code 'OPTIMIZE' for 20% OFF), even if you have no opportunity to get outside during daylight hours you can still reap the mental and physical benefits you would receive from exposure to the sun....but in 12 minutes a day via...earbuds? Yes, the HumanCharger is a device no larger than an iPod Nano, but rather than emitting sound, the earbuds emit full spectrum UV-free white light that is absorbed by photo-sensitive proteins in your brain. No, this isn't the future - intracranial light therapy...is real. In the interest of full disclosure and transparency, this is a VERY new science and much is unknown about why this treatment works (and if it does even work at all). But when it comes to anything that could improve my well-being while stuck in a dark room, I'm happy to be an early adopter knowing there is little downside with tremendous potential for upside, assuming this device and type of light therapy are truly legit. DOES THIS THING ACTUALLY WORK? I'll admit I was über skeptical when I first discovered this device, and frankly I thought it could just be a scam. But given that I discovered it from one of my most trusted health & biohacking resources Ben Greenfield who swears by his HumanCharger, I figured if I gave it a try the worst that would happen is it totally sucked (or my brain would melt...but that was a remote possibility). However, if it actually lived up to its promise of improving energy levels, increasing mental alertness, and lifting mood by simply using it 12 minutes a day in the morning, the best thing that would happen is finally having a solution to my desperate need for more sunlight during the day. And since I wasn't required to ingest anything, even if it was just the placebo effect, who cares? I would still feel better. Given that I was about to begin a two month long marathon editing a tv pilot for 12+ hours every day in a windowless room, I decided to take a chance and test out the HumanCharger for 4 weeks, and convinced my tech advisor and fellow editor Adam Bedford to test it out as well. According to Adam, "My first impression was that it was just a weird looking iPod. I thought it played soothing sounds. Imagine my surprise when the earbuds lit up!" After using it every 3 hours between 7am and 8pm (each session is 12 minutes) for 30 days, Adam's initial reaction was a slight increase in focus and energy which lasted for about an hour or so. But after the end of week two, Adam said: "My energy levels had risen considerably along with my ability to focus. Overall I felt a lot calmer the second week and the energy boost after each session lasted longer." Once the 30 day trial period was complete and Adam stopped using the device he said he didn't experience any withdrawal symptoms, but what he did notice was how different he felt when he didn't use the device consistently. "My sleep had improved from 5-6 hours per night to 7-8 hours during the 4 week test, but shortly after finishing my 30 days I was back to 5-6 hours per night." As far as my own experience, I'll admit I picked a very bad time to test this device without other external variables having an effect on the outcome. I was making significant changes to my diet and exercise routines, I was also battling a major case of depression, anxiety, and burnout (which I'll post more about soon). To say the effects I felt from using the device consistently for 8 weeks were solely from the HumanCharger would be irresponsible. But in short, I too noticed a slight increase in focus during the day and lessened effects of anxiety. I also felt much more aware of the time of day despite not seeing windows or the outside world for entire days on end. Here's what I can say definitively about this device that BLEW ME AWAY. My circadian rhythm shifted drastically over the course of using it upon waking every morning for just 4 weeks. I've never been a morning person...ever (ask my parents or my wife). For my entire life I've found it nearly impossible to wake up before 8am without constantly hitting the snooze button. Now that I use the HumanCharger every morning when I do my morning meditation, I wake up energized (without any alarm clock at all) at 5:30am. That's not a typo...I now wake up refreshed at 5:30 am every morning...without an alarm. There is no way that's just a placebo effect. And the effect has stuck for months. This was a fun episode. Nat brought a sack of health and biofeedback gadgets to the podcast and reviewed them all. I also give you my thoughts on the Apple Watch, which I have been wearing for the last few weeks. It seems there are more & more wearables and Quantified Self devices by the day. It's important that we don't get caught up in the hype and buy things that actually improve our life through the technology and not just distract us further with shiny things. My guests this week are two of the brightest minds in the health and fitness industry. The first is my own Chief Medical Officer, Tommy Wood, MD PhD. Tommy is currently working as a visiting scientist researching neonatal brain injury at the University of Washington. He received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, before studying medicine at the University of Oxford. My second guest is Chris Masterjohn, PhD. Chris earned his PhD in Nutritional Science from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where he studied the role of glutathione and dietary antioxidants in regulating the accumulation of methylglyoxal. He has authored or co-authored ten peer-reviewed publications. His writes a blog, The Daily Lipid, and produces a podcast by the same name. You can also follow his professional work on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat (whatever that is!). Tommy’s premise for this interview was as follows: If you fix lifestyle and environment, can you be a lot less "strict" with your diet? For instance, are low carbers needing to be so low carb because everything else is broken? I took that idea and invited Chris Masterjohn on to the show for a roundtable discussion that starts with a general debate on the causes of obesity and then moves on to what we can all to improve or maintain our body composition. You should listen to this interview because unlike many others I’ve heard; it includes a broad discussion of the range of issues that we see in our practice that hold people back from their body composition goals. The first time you meet someone who plateaued in their weight loss while eating a low-carb diet you realise that it’s a bit more complicated than that. Here’s the outline of this interview with Tommy Wood and Chris Masterjohn: [00:03:15] "The built environment," one that facilitates eating more and moving less. [00:07:48] You, the listeners, are already winning! [00:08:38] The composition of our food. [00:09:32] Upsetting set points--poor sleep. [00:09:57] Circadian rhythm. [00:10:07] Stress and gut health. "Oxidative Priority, Meal Frequency, and the Energy Economy of Food and Activity: Implications for Longevity, Obesity, and Cardiometabolic Disease." Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders (2016). Be sure to read Tommy’s response: Wood, Thomas. "If the Metabolic Winter Is Coming, When Will It Be Summer?." Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders (2017). [00:12:58] Most of your stored body fat came from the fat that you ate. [00:13:28] Calorie restriction. [00:14:14] Insulin increases carbohydrate oxidation. [00:19:10] Body recomposition programs. [00:19:49] Chris Masterjohn does not see insulin as a key player. [00:20:37] Whenever you restrict food choices, food intake goes down. [00:22:56] MyFitnessPal. [00:23:08] Sleep and calorie intake. [00:24:28] Low-carb doesn't work well for the type of exercise Chris Masterjohn does. [00:26:37] Preparing for fat-loss. [00:29:53] Starting with other ideas that don't work can be helpful. [00:32:47] Fueling for your activity. [00:33:56] Start by fixing your environment. [00:34:26] Feasting and fasting. [00:35:14] Whole foods. If you've been into health food, or have tried to limit your sugar consumption, or go ‘paleo’, chances are better than even that you've tried stevia as a sweetener. It's also likely that you didn't dig it. In this episode, you'll learn why. Spoiler alert: It's not because stevia tastes bad. Take a moment to ponder this question: Do you know everything you need to know about sex? Have you figured out how to have a healthy and fulfilling sex life? If you're like 99.9% of the population, you've probably found this part of the human experience to be one of the most perplexing aspects of life. Why are we so often powerfully attracted to the exact wrong person? Are there varied forms of chemistry between people? Can you control chemistry? Why does orgasm seem to cause a 'hangover' reaction in men? What's the deal with porn? Is it healthy, or will it undermine our relationships? Is monogamy natural for humans, and if so- is it even possible long-term? Can women learn to have casual sex without falling in love? And what about men? Are they immune to pair bonding with sexual partners? If you've pondered any of these questions, you've stumbled on the right podcast. In this episode, we explore the topic of sex from the perspective of spiritual practice and personal development. Our guest John Gray provides answers to so many of our sexual mysteries, from a scientific, as well as metaphysical point of view. This is one that you’ll likely listen to a couple times, due to it’s content density. Do you know someone who likes sex? Someone who has issues with sex? If so, do them a service and pass this show along. It's my belief that we could all use some help in this area, and that the world might just be a better place if we were all achieving a deeper and more meaningful relationship to our own sexuality. Topics we discuss: The 4 types of chemistry and what kills them How hormonal duality works and affects attraction? The ideal mate, a pipe dream? The 80x20 rule What makes sex different for men and women? Safety & connection: understanding women's needs, and solution tools for men Men's biological need for feeling successful and acknowledged Sex is dead. Understanding the hero dynamic, vasopressin, and the flip side of pair bonding Understanding women's complex psychology and how to navigate Respect vs. appreciation: the distinction and who needs what Role reversal and hormone influence Why sometimes are we turned on by the exact wrong person? How childhood trauma affects our sex life What causes sex addiction and how to get out of it? What does porn do to us and how it affects our relationships, and our brain and productivity? What's up with masturbation and the male orgasm hangover? How to create attraction and polarity between a couple and how to keep it alive Does monogamy work? Do older men bond more easily? Can woman have sex without following in love? Should men practice semen retention or let it all go? For more details visit this episode's page. To your loins... Today is Zestology podcast number 52, which means we've been going a year. It's flown by, and been a lot of fun in the process. Thank you for being part of the journey, supporting me along the way, and hopefully getting some inspiration as you listen. Now, ladies and gentlemen, as you know I always like to put myself in the line of fire and test out any new gadgets for extra energy. (I'm such a hero, right.) But this one I was super-sceptical about. It is a crazy in-ear bright light energy headset called The Human Charger. I just wasn't convinced that a gadget that shines lights into my ears would do anything for me. It sends bright light into your ear which is apparently as good as seeing it and especially good for jet lag and winter mornings. The funny thing, despite my total scepticism, is I've been using this for a couple of months and for the mornings I've tried it I've felt a definite extra morning buzz. So in the deep midwinter, I wanted to find out more about the effects of a lack of light in winter, how we can hack our jet lag, and lots more. Hence today's podcast with entrepreneur and creator of this weird headset Timo Ahopelto.
