As @Om Malik explains in one of this week's Essays of the Week, OpenAi won in this high-stakes battle.Make no mistake — the reason OpenAI is achieving all this success (and hype) is because they have a product that for now is stellar. Nonetheless, OpenAI has created excitement that reminds me of the emergence of Palm, and later social networks. They stoked the imagination, and possibilities. Of course!Om is right. Sam Altman did his own post later in the day of the announcements:First, a key part of our mission is to put very capable AI tools in the hands of people for free (or at a great price). I am very proud that we've made the best model in the world available for free in ChatGPT, without ads or anything like that. Free to consumers, or 8 billion earthlings, is possible due to the revenues OpenAI can make from business users. It represents a very big step forward. The company also released a desktop app, initially on the Mac, that can interact with other apps. But for me, the best way to think about what was delivered, aside from free, is summed up in this week's title—Eyes, Ears, Hands, and Mouth. OpenAI has enabled every smartphone camera on the planet to become the AI's eyes and ears. Both still images and video can be used as inputs to a conversation. Of course, the microphone, too. This week's video of the week shows this for teaching a student how to solve a math problem. The mouth reference acknowledges that we can now speak to ChatGPT in a human-like way, including cross-talking and interruptions. And, of course, we can still type using our hands. This changes the problem of giving AI data—images, video, sound, and speech can all become data for input and learning. They also gave chatGPT a memory. It can remember things across sessions. The scope of what will now be possible is expanded to a much longer list.Rohit Krishnan writes about what comes next in his essay:The true change will come once we can enable large numbers of them to work together. And we're getting glimpses of how they can do this across all modalities that are important to use. Whether that's writing code or seeing something or listening to something or writing or reading something or a mixture of all of these. He is talking about AI to AI interactions that can produce even better and faster outcomes. I did this myself earlier in the week. I was asking ChatGPT to create a chart showing the performance of the SignalRank Index against the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ over the 2014-1019 period.ChatGPT did not have the NASDAQ data, so I asked Claude.ai for it. Once I had it I went back to ChatGPT and it completed the work. Here's the chart:It seems clear that almost any problem that can be described, shown, listened to can now be given to ChatGPT and answered.Eyes, Ears, Hands, and mouths are all part of our intelligent robotic future, too. The building blocks for rapid productivity advancement are being put into place.Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz discuss the implications for manufacturing in their podcast this week. This was a very important week. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    How many thresholds does your dog cross a day? It could be a physical or emotional threshold. Training thresholds are important to understand, and thresholds can explain why some dogs seem anxious and refuse to budge, and others get way overexcited. I've got tips to help dogs with balancing emotions to cross any type of threshold with calm, thoughtful focus. You'll also get a peek at what I discovered about my puppy Prophet's excitement with a see-saw and how I'm counterconditioning the stimulus.   In this episode you'll hear:   • About understanding thresholds as emotional states that dogs experience. • The different types of thresholds: positive, neutral, and unpleasant. • Examples of thresholds such as entering new environments, or going to specific places like a training class or vet's office. • The importance of observing and managing a dog's emotional state when crossing thresholds. • Strategies for managing extreme reactions at thresholds, such as overexcitement or fear. • How to implement relaxation protocols and counter conditioning to create a more desirable behavior. • Why you need patience and consistency in training to modify a dog's response to thresholds over time. • My puppy Prophet's See-Saw (Teeter) obsession and counterconditioning the stimulus. • What to do for calm, focused behavior when crossing thresholds. • The importance of being present and proactive in managing thresholds and behaviors.   Resources:   1. Summary The idea for DTC Unscripted originated from a brainstorming session in November 2023. The goal was to build a new brand from scratch with low risk and document the entire process. The project involved approaching sponsors and offering various sponsorship packages. The plan was to create daily content across multiple platforms and integrate sponsors naturally into the narrative. The project aimed to redefine the playbook of D2C brand building and create a transparent and authentic storytelling experience. The chapters cover the origin of the idea, building a brand from scratch, sponsorship opportunities, projected reach and impact, engaging the audience, sponsorship tiers, the sponsorship process, and future goals and sustainability. ➡️ Download Dr. Laura's guide to Developmental Milestones (it's free!) Today we will be exploring the intricate dance between eye movement patterns and brain function. We discuss the "Triangle of Development" with its cornerstones: the eyes, ears, and vestibular system, and how pivotal they are from the earliest stages of life. The development of the eyes, including the muscles and neurological connections, is crucial from birth and deeply intertwined with the coordination of the ears to help us navigate and understand the world around us. The ‘Triangle of Development' is a concept that I've introduced with my patients based on my extensive practice and even contributing to the creation of a piece of medical equipment. This triangle consists of the eyes, the ears, and the vestibular system—three essential components that connect to create a foundation for our neurological and sensory development. Understanding these connections can really help us understand the causes behind attention issues, anxiety, developmental delays, and language struggles. We know that the special senses, including sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch, are the electrical information to the brain. With the vestibular system joining in before these senses, they all play a crucial part in how we perceive and interact with the world. Excitingly, we'll introduce our new "Jump Start Test" and the "Fantastic Seven" exercises designed to address primitive reflexes and core stability. This program is a leap towards transforming our understanding of neurology and behavior. Subscribe to the Connect My Brain YouTube Channel! Perhaps the most frequently misunderstood office of five-fold leadership in the church is the office of the Prophet. Who are these people and what exactly do they do? Some wonder if they even are still valid in the Church - so, are they still essential to church leadership and missional advance? What does the Bible say about the call and function of prophets? Some may be surprised to hear that not all prophetically gifted people are meant to hold the office of the Prophet - how does this work? Partnering alongside apostles, teachers, evangelists and pastors, the Prophet is an incredible gift to the Church in every generation. Yet, Scripture seems to mention false prophets just as often as true prophets are written of - how can we tell the difference? Do all prophets see into the future? Do they all work miracles? The modern Church so many conflicting opinions of this five-fold office. This message opens up a wealth of Scripture to help us understand the call and commitment of God's Prophets. It will also likely help some who listen to conclude that this calling from God actually rests upon them in the present day.

Visit us at shapedbydog.com   There are 14 canine myths commonly accepted as truths and I'm doing some serious debunking to separate fact from fiction. For example, have you heard the myth about “Doodles never shed”? It's a myth because it's genetics. If you breed a shedding breed to a non-shedding breed, we can't predict what we're going to get. Don't miss this one, because I'm “shedding” even more light on popular lore about dogs that too many people still believe. Enjoy!   In this episode we're mythbusting:   • Old dogs can't learn new tricks. • Puppies outgrow naughty behavior. • Show your dog who's the boss, alpha, pack leader. • Begin puppy training at six months old. • Dogs defy, grow stubborn or ignore you near tempting distractions. • Feeding scared dogs rewards fear. • Wagging tails means happy dogs. • Yawning dogs are tired dogs. • Good dogs tolerate children. • Puppies love hugs and cuddles. • Dogs only see in black and white. • Dogs admit they're wrong with guilty looks. • Rescue dogs are damaged. • Two puppies provide companionship for one another.   Resources:   1. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    How to help frightened and anxious dogs is a question I receive frequently, so I'm diving into identifying and overcoming canine fears and phobias that often lead to withdrawal or reactivity. Today's focus is on overlooked reasons dogs become fearful and what you need to know about anxiety. It's important to recognize a dog's fear triggers and the role we might play in unconsciously creating stress.   In this episode you'll hear:   •  Overlooked triggers to many dogs' fears. • Natural dog fears during certain life stages. • The difference between alert, excited or anxious dog behavior. • How genetics predispose some breeds to fear or confidence. • That animals inherit generational trauma, too. • How events, medical conditions and lack of education can create fear in dogs. • How spaying may impact a female dog's hormones. • How gut health impacts animal behavior and emotions. • The effect of EMF's on dogs and animals. • How dogs absorb and internalize human emotions. • How to decode your dog's body language. • Why we should observe how our reactions impact our dogs.   Resources:   1. Down and Back

In this second installment of guide dog history, we introduce you to a new generation of service dogs and the growing, often unexpected, range of breeds being deployed. Today, in every part of the world service dogs are being trained and certified to guide the visually and hearing impaired. As scientists explore new frontiers in canine capabilities, evidence suggests that dogs can modify their behavior when a human's biochemistry changes. This incredible olfactory sense offers humans yet another reason to appreciate, admire, and adore the canine counterparts who stay by their side in service.   Bonafide Bits: Sorry, triviaphiles but Timmy never fell down a well on Lassie's watch. In 1938, an engineer who was hard of hearing relied on his canine pal, Rags, to know when the city water station pumps started and stopped. In 1976, college students in Massachusetts began training dogs as four-legged prosthetic “ears” for human handlers. On July 26, 1990, President Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which gave widespread accessibility to service dogs. In 2018, the non-profit, Medical Mutts, trained five dogs to identify and respond to the scent of someone who is having, or just experienced, a seizure.   Featured Breeds: Golden Retriever The Golden Retriever, an exuberant Scottish gundog of great beauty, stands among America's most popular dog breeds. They are serious workers at hunting and fieldwork, as guides for the blind, and in search-and-rescue, enjoy obedience and other competitive events, and have an endearing love of life when not at work. Discover more about Golden Retrievers at AKC's Golden Retriever Breed Biography.   Labrador Retriever The sweet-faced, lovable Labrador Retriever is America's most popular dog breed. Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog. Labs are famously friendly. They are companionable housemates who bond with the whole family, and they socialize well with neighbor dogs and humans alike. But don't mistake his easy-going personality for low energy: The Lab is an enthusiastic athlete that requires lots of exercise like swimming and marathon games of fetch, to keep physically and mentally fit. Discover more about Labrador Retrievers at AKC's Labrador Retriever Breed Biography.   German Shepherd Dog There are many reasons why German Shepherd Dogs stand in the front rank of canine royalty, but experts say their defining attribute is character: loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn commands for many tasks, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones. German Shepherd Dogs will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians, but, the breed standard says, there's a “certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships.” Discover more about German Shepherd Dogs at AKC's German Shepherd Dog Breed Biography.   Doberman Pinscher Sleek and powerful, possessing both a magnificent physique and keen intelligence, the Doberman Pinscher is one of dogkind's noblemen. This incomparably fearless and vigilant breed stands proudly among the world's finest protection dogs. Discover more about Doberman Pinschers at AKC's Doberman Pinscher Breed Biography.   Collie The majestic Collie, thanks to a hundred years as a pop-culture star, is among the world's most recognizable and beloved dog breeds. The full-coated “rough” Collie is the more familiar variety, but there is also a sleek “smooth” Collie. Discover more about Collies at AKC's Collie Breed Biography.   Shetland Sheepdog (aka Sheltie) Shelties bear a strong family resemblance to their bigger cousin, the Collie. The Shetland Sheepdog is a small, active, and agile herding dog standing between 13 and 16 inches at the shoulder. The long coat is harsh and straight, with a dense undercoat, and comes in black, blue merle, and sable, with white markings. Discover more about Shelties at AKC's Sheltie Breed Biography.   Boston Terrier The Boston Terrier is a lively little companion recognized by his tight tuxedo jacket, sporty but compact body, and the friendly glow in his big, round eyes. His impeccable manners have earned him the nickname “The American Gentleman.” Discover more about Boston Terriers at AKC's Boston Terrier Breed Biography.   Chihuahua The Chihuahua is a balanced, graceful dog of terrier-like demeanor, weighing no more than six pounds. The rounded “apple” head is a breed hallmark. The erect ears and full, luminous eyes are acutely expressive. Coats come in many colors and patterns and can be long or short. The varieties are identical except for the coat. Chihuahuas possess loyalty, charm, and a big-dog attitude. Even tiny dogs require training, and without it, this clever scamp will rule your household like a little Napoleon. Compact and confident, Chihuahuas are ideal city pets. They are too small for roughhousing with kids, and special care must be taken in cold weather, but Chihuahuas are adaptable as long as they get lots of quality time in their preferred lap. Discover more about Chihuahuas at AKC's Chihuahua Breed Biography.   Akita Akitas are burly, heavy-boned spitz-type dogs of imposing stature. Standing 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder, Akitas have a dense coat that comes in several colors, including white. The head is broad and massive and is balanced in the rear by a full, curled-over tail. The erect ears and dark, shining eyes contribute to an expression of alertness, a hallmark of the breed. Akitas are quiet, fastidious dogs. Wary of strangers and often intolerant of other animals, Akitas will gladly share their silly, affectionate side with family and friends. They thrive on human companionship. The large, independent-thinking Akita is hardwired for protecting those they love. They must be well-socialized from birth with people and other dogs. Discover more about Akitas at AKC's Akita Breed Biography.   Pembroke Welsh Corgi Among the most agreeable of all small house dogs, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a strong, athletic, and lively little herder who is affectionate and companionable without being needy. They are one of the world's most popular herding breeds. Discover more about Pembroke Welsh Corgis at AKC's Pembroke Welsh Corgi Breed Biography.   For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org.   Shareables: Dogs can be trained to sense a growing list of health conditions including the onset of seizures, heart attacks, and strokes. It is a myth that humans discovered the potential of hearing dogs in the 1970s. Hearing dogs have been in service for generations. No technology exists that can replicate the vast range of the canine sense of smell. Because dogs are just that awesome.

Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by three of the country's foremost quail biologists to talk about past, present, and future efforts to count bobwhite quail and how that population data is used to create high quality quail habitat, more birds, and better hunting opportunities. Those quail biologists include Quail Forever's Working Lands for Bobwhite Quail Framework Coordinator Dr. Jessica McGuire, Georgia DNR's Quail Coordinator Dallas Ingram, and University of Georgia Associate Professor Dr. James Martin. Episode Highlights: • Ingram and Martin explain how bird dogs are used to help count fall bobwhite coveys, while taking fun jabs at each other's favorite bird dog breeds in the process. • McGuire also discusses how landowners who are interested in fostering higher quail populations on their property can get involved with counting quail as a means of better understanding what factors need to be improved on a particular piece of land. • Martin also talks about how his grad students at the University of Georgia are using new technology to make significant strides in our understanding of quail population dynamics.

Visit us at shapedbydog.com  There are two ways to work on your dog listening around distractions, but many people only learn one. The first way is to get your dog into a controlled position like a sit or down, and introduce distractions. We take it to the next level and do things differently! Let's face it; there are not too many bunnies who are doing to ask us to get our dogs into a sit before they run across the path. We need our dogs to listen no matter what and no matter how far away they are from us, and the timing of our distractions in training is critical to set our dogs up for success.   In the episode you'll hear: • About the two reasons a dog would listen at a distance. • The way we grow massive confidence in our dog's ability to listen. • About looking at what you do if your dog makes a mistake. • How games grow responses and enthusiasm for dogs. • What playing video games has to do with dog training. • The importance of controlling the distraction and not the dog. • About growing a dog's skills in layers and the fun way to practice. • How to really use distractions in your dog training. • Why you always want to be on Team Distraction to get to Team Distance. • What to play with your dog this week in prep for next-level listening games.
