Send us a textI am delighted to welcome this week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, Carol Riddick. We were introduced to Carol on The Soul Train Cruise, where she was one of performers ranging from Soul Train TV show stars like Shalimar, to contemporary favorites like Carol. We enjoyed it so much that we booked for 2026. If you listened to our reflections of the cruise a few weeks ago on Ep 165 The Soul Train Cruise I think it would be clear the person that ‘stole the show' for us was Carol Riddick. The thing is, unlike the dozens of old school performers on the cruise, we weren't familiar with Carol when we boarded! Carol Riddick, an artist who has graced stages across the globe winning fans and admirers alike with her extraordinary voice and presence. TRACKS 1-Blues For D.P. (Ron Carter) 2-Just Enough (Herbie Hancock) 3-French Connections (Igor Butman) 4-Something Borrowed, Something Blue (Tommy Flanagan) 5-Lullaby For Shana Bly (Grover Washington Jr.) 6-Stolen Moments (Oliver Nelson) 7-In a Sentimental Mood (Duke Ellington, Manny Kurtz, Irving Mills) 8-Stella by Starlight (Victor Young, Ned Washington) CREDITS Grover Washington Jr. – soprano saxophone (1, 6, 8), tenor saxophone (2–5), alto saxophone (7) Igor Butman – tenor saxophone (3, 6, 8) Herbie Hancock – grand piano (1, 2, 5) James "Sid" Simmons – grand piano (3, 6, 8) Tommy Flanagan – grand piano (4, 7) Richard Lee Steacker – guitars (3, 6) Ron Carter – double bass (1, 2, 5) Gerald Veasley – 5-string electric bass (3, 6, 8) Grady Tate – drums (1) Marvin "Smitty" Smith – drums (1, 2, 5) Darryl Washington – drums (3, 6, 8) Miguel Fuentes – percussion (3, 6, 8)

My guest today is bassist Gerald Veasley. Philadelphia Native, Gerald has brought his 6-string bass all over the world performing with Grover Washington Jr., Joe Zawinul, McCoy Tyner, and Odean Pope to name a few. I've gotten to know Gerald through his work as president of Jazz Philadelphia, a non-profit seeking to strengthen and elevate the Jazz ecosystem in our city. Although this is a conversation between two bassists, we don't actually talk about bass that much. Most of the conversation centers around one of my favorite topics, the art of learning, which is a common theme whenever Gerald and I get a chance to speak.www.geraldveasley.com

A Philadelphia native, James began his musical training in church and attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, which produced other notable acts Bilal, Boyz II Men and The Roots. Studying both vocal performance and instrumental music, James excelled as a vocalist and musician before continuing his education at Temple University majoring in jazz performance and music technology. James quickly grabbed attention and acclaim from artists both within and outside of his hometown of Philadelphia. Lady Alma, Kindred the Family Soul, Bilal, Jazmine Sullivan, Kelis, Ray Chew, The Jazzyfatnastees, Camp Lo, Talib Kweli, Kelly Clarkson and Gerald Veasley have all shared the experience of James keeping time behind them. In 2009, James teamed with one of house music's biggest producers, Kenny Dope to release his first commercially available project, an EP titled "Money for Love". This was the first time that he took the spotlights as a vocalist, and set the ground for his self-produced debut album "Conversations in Analog, Vol. 1". This album covered the genres he was most known for: jazz, R&B/soul and house. In addition to being the drummer/programmer on the album, he also showcases himself vocally on the album-ending track "Freedom". In 2017, James and his band, The Buttered Biscuits, released his follow-up EP, "Biscuit Street" which features a re-interpretation of the Tears for Fears classic "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", and Alyson Williams on a cover of the Emotions classic "Don't Ask My Neighbor". The project is the most personal of any he's worked on for any artist, as it includes "Give It A Chance", the song he wrote to propose to his wife. Currently, James is touring as the musical director for Vivian Green and featured drummer for the Screaming Headless Torsos. He continually finds inspirations in both legends like Buddy Miles, Phil Collins and Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as contemporaries and friends Lil' John Roberts and Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson. •••• The B-Side Podcast is produced by Charlie Hoxie, Kecia Cole, Ro Johnson and Sachar Mathias; recorded by Onel Mulet and Steve de Seve; and edited by Emily Boghossian and Khyriel Palmer. Gerald is also instrumental helping to establish and coordinate educational programs and Bass Bootcamps. That’s what most know about Gerald but in this story he shares with Jo Painter some things that are little known. Gerald Veasley shares his musical journey and reveals the motivation behind his life’s work. It all started on his 12th Birthday. His Dad gave him a Bass. At the University of Pennsylvania he got serious and studied Engineering, Political Science and Philosophy. It was an unexpected event during his college years that brought that Bass front and center in his life again. Gerald says he discovered music as a vocation and thought “Wouldn’t it be cool to be somebody who makes that music that helps people sort of get through tough times”. Gerald has fun with music and does it with a much bigger purpose. He shares his intention and his latest endeavor, the ‘Unscripted Jazz Series’ at South Kitchen & Jazz Parlor in Philadelphia. He calls it an opportunity for musicians to play music ‘outside their box’, an adventure for both musician and audience! South Jazz Parlor will be replicated at the DoubleTree this year during Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest and of course the now legendary Midnight Jams will be headed up by Gerald Veasley … Don’t miss it!
