The powerhouse guitarist from the Wild Magnolias and Papa Grows Funk spent 20 years as a star of the Japanese blues and soul music world before finding a new home in New Orleans. A longtime devotee of Mardi Gras Indian music and the Meters, he quickly found his way into the very bands he’d studied from afar. After nearly three decades at the apex of the funk scene in his adopted city, June tips into an old haunt to rendezvous with the Troubled Men. Episode 74 The Polyphonic Synth Journey of Fusion Jazz   Playlist Jan Hammer, “Darkness / Earth In Search Of A Sun” from The First Seven Days (1975 Atlantic). I am including two versions of the same track from Jan Hammer, a master synthesist who moved from monophonic to polyphonic synths gradually, making the best used of the expressive qualities of each technologh. This track is from 1975 and uses Oberheim modules, probably the 2-voice or even 4-voice, but along with the Minimoog and what sounds like an uncredited Mellotron. Hammer was insistent in the notes for this solo album that none of the sounds were made with the guitar. This makes the contrast of this track with the next version performed live with Jeff Beck and even more interesting contrast. Producer, Engineer, Piano, Electric Piano, Moog and Oberheim synthesizers, Drums, Percussion, Composer, Jan Hammer. 4:30 Jeff Beck With The Jan Hammer Group, “Darkness/Earth In Search Of A Sun” from Live (1977 Atlantic). Here is the same tune written by Hammer for his solo album, now performed live with Jeff Beck. I think one can assume that all soloing in done on a Minimoog while all other synth sounds, including strings, are provided by the Oberheim modules and Freeman string synth. Bass, Fernando Saunders; Drums, Tony Smith; Guitar, Effects, Jeff Beck; Moog, Oberheim, and Freeman synthesizers, Electric Piano, Timbales, Jan Hammer; violin, string synthesizer, Steve Kindler. 7:55 Billy Cobham, “Leaward Winds” from Magic (1977 CBS). Early days of the Oberheim polyphonic, used again as background comping and fills to back-up the guitar and piano leads. Bass, Randy Jackson; Guitar, Peter Maunu; Piano, Oberheim Synthesizer, Mark Soskin; drums, producer, Billy Cobham. 3:38 Herbie Hancock, “Hang Up Your Hang Ups” from Man-Child (1975 Columbia). Along with Jan Hammer, Herbie Hancock was an early pioneer of using polyphonic synths in his ensemble. While I don't hear the Oberheim module being played until about the 5:30 mark in this track, I wanted to include it because Hancock uses many synths at his disposal to achieve the overall sound. The next two tracks from the Eddie Henderson album Mahal used a similar but updated keyboard ensemble, including the Oberheim 8-voice polyphonic and Prophet 5 synths. Bass, Henry Davis, Louis Johnson, Paul Jackson; Drums, Harvey Mason, James Gadson, Mike Clark; Guitar, David T. Walker, Blackbird McKnight; Guitar, Synthesizer, Melvin "Wah Wah" Watson; Percussion, Bill Summers; Piano, Fender Rhodes, Arp Odyssey, Pro Soloist, 2600, String Ensemble, Oberheim Polyphonic Synthesizer, Hohner D6 Clavinet, Herbie Hancock; Saxophone, Flute, Ernie Watts, Jim Horn; Soprano Saxophone, Wayne Shorter; Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Saxello, Bass Clarinet, Bass Flute, Alto Flute, Bennie Maupin; Trombone, Garnett Brown; Trumpet, Bud Brisbois, Jay DaVersa; Tuba, Bass Trombone, Dick Hyde. 7:27 Eddie Henderson, “Cyclops” from Mahal (1978 Capitol). Bass, Paul Jackson (2); Congas, Percussion, Bill Summers; Drums, Howard King; Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, ARP 2600, Oberheim 8 Voice Polyphonic, Prophet-5, ARP Strings Ensemble, Minimoog, Yamaha CS-80 Polyphonic synthesizers, Herbie Hancock; Flute, Hubert Laws; Guitar, Ray Obiedo; Piano [Acoustic], Mtume; Prophet-5 Programming, John Bowen; Tenor Saxophone, Saxophone [Saxello], Bennie Maupin; Trombone, Julian Priester; Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Eddie Henderson. 5:19 Eddie Henderson, “Prance On” from Mahal (1978 Capitol). Bass, Paul Jackson (2); Congas, Percussion, Bill Summers; Drums, Howard King; Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, ARP 2600, Oberheim 8 Voice Polyphonic, Prophet-5, ARP Strings Ensemble, Minimoog, Yamaha CS-80 Polyphonic synthesizers, Herbie Hancock; Flute, Hubert Laws; Guitar, Ray Obiedo; Piano [Acoustic], Mtume; Prophet-5 Programming, John Bowen; Tenor Saxophone, Saxophone [Saxello], Bennie Maupin; Trombone, Julian Priester; Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Eddie Henderson. 5:17 Rolf Kühn. “Cucu Ear” from Cucu Ear (1980 MPS Records). This German disc features keyboardist Rolf Kühn and highlights the Roland Jupiter 4, a 4-voice polyphonic synth. Bass, N.-H. Ø Pedersen; Clarinet, Roland Sting Synthesizer, Roland Jupiter 4 Synthesizer, Roland Amps, Rolf Kühn; Drums, Alphonse Mouzon; Engineer, Walter Quintus; Guitar, Peter Weihe, Philip Catherine; Steinway Acoustic, Fender Rhodes pianos, Roland Amps and Echoes, Joachim Kühn; Reeds, Charlie Mariano, Herb Geller; Trombone, Egon Christmann, Wolfgang Ahlers; Trumpet, Klaus Blodau, Larry Elam, Mannie Moch, Paul Kubatsch. 5:05 Rolf Kühn. “Key-Alliance” from Cucu Ear (1980 MPS Records). On this track the Roland Jupiter 4 is played by Joachim Kühn, brother of Rolf. Bass, N.-H. Ø Pedersen; Clarinet, Roland Sting Synthesizer, Roland Amps, Rolf Kühn; Drums, Alphonse Mouzon; Engineer, Walter Quintus; Guitar, Peter Weihe, Philip Catherine; Steinway Acoustic, Roland Jupiter 4 Synthesizer, Fender Rhodes pianos, Roland Amps and Echoes, Joachim Kühn; Reeds, Charlie Mariano, Herb Geller; Trombone, Egon Christmann, Wolfgang Ahlers; Trumpet, Klaus Blodau, Larry Elam, Mannie Moch, Paul Kubatsch. 5:41 Didier Lockwood, “Ballade Des Fees (Quartet Without Drums)” from Live In Montreux (1980 Disques JMS). Look who's featured on this album by French violinist Dider Lockwood—it's Jan Hammer again. Only this time he's using an unnamed “polyphonic synthesizer.” Your guess is as good as mine on this one, although he was using Oberheim and Yamaha CP70 keyboards around this same time. Bass, Bo Stief; Drums, Gerry Brown; Rhythm Guitar, Marc Perru; Polyphonic Synthesizer, Jan Hammer; Tenor Saxophone, Bob Malach; Violin, Didier Lockwood. 4:50 Didier Lockwood, “Fast Travel” from Live In Montreux (1980 Disques JMS). Another track with Jan Hammer using an unnamed polyphonic synth. There is a really smart Minimoog solo beginning as about 1:21, polyphonic fills are most apparent around beginning around 4:08. Bass, Bo Stief; Drums, Gerry Brown; Rhythm Guitar, Marc Perru; Polyphonic Synthesizer, Jan Hammer; Tenor Saxophone, Bob Malach; Violin, Didier Lockwood. 7:06 Georges Acogny, “Karimagie” from First Steps In (1981 String). This track uses a Polymoog effectively for some nice runs and comping, beginning around 3:40. I do not know what instrument was used to create the the white noise heard in the opening and throughout since I don't believe you could do that with the Polymoog. Bass, Dominique Bertram; Composed By, Khalil Chahine; Drums, Paco Sery; Guitar, Georges Acogny, Kamil Rustam; Percussion, Sydney Thiam; Piano, Patrick Gauthier; Soloist [Acoustic Guitar], Larry Coryell; Soloist [Bass], Nicolas Fizman; Soloist [Electric Guitar], Kamil Rustam; Polymoog synthesizer, Rachid Bahri. 8:30 Georges Acogny, “1st La Rosée” from First Steps In (1981 String). Acogny is a guitar player so the polyphonic synth tends to play a supporting role to the string work on this track. In this case, the Prophet 5 is used, most notably at about 30 seconds into the track. Bass, Nicolas Fizman, Electric Piano [Fender Rhodes], Olivier Hutman, Guitar, Kamil Rustam, Guitar [Ovation], Georges Acogny, Piano, Jean-Pierre Fouquey, Soloist [Trombone], Hamid Belhocine, Prophet 5 Synthesizer, Didier Egea. 4:37 Combo FH, “Zelený Muž (Green Man)” from Věci (Things) (1981 Panton). Here is a short track that uses the Italian-made Farfisa Syntorchestra, a rare keyboard made in 1978 that had a split keyboard, part polyphonic string synthesizer and part monophone synth section. Mostly used on European tracks by German composers including Klaus Schulze, here is an unusual jazz fusion example from a group in the Czechoslovakia. This group was known for its unusual instrumentation, including lead bassoon heard on this track. Bass Guitar, Václav Pátek; Bassoon, Percussion, Milan Sládek; Percussion, Richard Mader; Organ, Farfisa Syntorchestra synthesizers, Percussion, Leader, Daniel Fikejz; Percussion, Bořivoj Suchý. 1:48 String Connection, “Quasi String Waltz” from Workoholic (1982 PolJazz). Recorded in Poland and distributed by the Polish Jazz Society. This album features some strings sounds played on the Polymoog, which was still being used for its unique sounds even by this late date, because the Polymoog had been retired by this time. Listen for fills and chords beginning around 1:08. Bass Guitar [Gitara Basowa], Krzysztof Ścierański; Drums [Perkusja], Zbigniew Lewandowski; Piano [Fortepian Akstyczny], Violin [Skrypce], Polymoog Synthesizer, Krzesimir Dębski; Piano, Hammond Organ , Polymoog Synthesizer, Trombone [Puzon], Janusz Skowron; Tenor Saxophone [Saxoton Tenorowy], Soprano Saxophone [Saxofon Sopranowy], Andrzej Olejniczak. 3:19 Mike Elliott, “For Janny” from Diffusion (1983 Celebration). Another interesting album of guitar-based fusion jazz with synthesizer touches. Seemingly self-produced in Minnesota. Although the Minimoog is also used on this recording, I selected a track that was primarily using the Polymoog, beginning around 50 seconds. Fender Bass, Rick Houle; Drums, Gordy Knudtson; Flugelhorn, Bobby Peterson; Gibson ES-347 guitar, Ryoji Matsuoka Flamenco guitars, solid body kalimba; Mike Elliott; grand piano, Polymoog and Mini-Moog synthesizers, Ricky Peterson; Producer, Mike Elliott. 4:42 Martin Kratochvíl & Jazz Q, “Trhanec (The Muffin)” from Hvězdoň Asteroid (1984 Supraphon). From Czechoslovakia, a brilliant ensemble of musicians led by keyboardst Martin Kratochvíl. Here is another mix of monophonic synths and the polyphonic Oberheim 4-voice, heard in the opening riff that's repeated throughout. Bass Guitar, Přemysl Faukner; Drums [Bicí Nástroje], Pavol Kozma; Electric Guitar [El. Kytara], Twelve-String Guitar, Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, ARP Omni, Oberheim 4-Voice Polyphonic synthesizers, Leader [Vedoucí], Engineer [Recording], Recording Supervisor [Recording Director], Martin Kratochvíl. 4:34 Opening background music: Short piece by Thom Holmes using the Arturia Prophet 5 plug-in. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.

"I kept saying daddy, daddy I want some drums, so eventually he bought me some drums. I was a little girl maybe 4 or 5 years old. It was something innate that he wanted to cultivate. When there's eight kids in the house and 10 people total you don't want to hear any drums or banging. It was an innate energy that we had. We were rhythm. I was just doing a session and I was trying to get the choir to do a combination of rhythms. They weren't nailing it so I said; "look, y'all follow me because I am rhythm." All the records we ("The Section") made including 'Tapestry' and James Taylor; we were all in the room together. Everyone's in the same room playing at the same time. From playing on 'Tapestry' and Sweet Baby James that lit us all up. "I was taught to play in the studio by some very astute fellows. Namely Peter Asher, Lou Adler and Carole (King). They always brought me back to the song; what's best for the song? Don't play over the melody, play something that's going to help. This was before you could amplify an acoustic guitar so James is playing to the mic. We're all walking on egg shells. Keep it down to a level where James' (Taylor) guitar and vocal can be heard. We were all sitting down close to each other. Peter Asher made the template for that music when he produced "Sweet Baby James." That's how we learned to play together. That record and the next one, 'Mudslide Slim.' That's where Russ, Lee and I learned to play that music." "We got into the studios from that. Peter Asher was the first producer to put the names of the accompanists on the albums. This is why the wrecking crew is not well known because they played on many records but they weren't listed.” “These records came along and we were kind of the next generation of the wrecking crew. Because Peter and Lou (Adler) were putting the names of the musicians on the albums we got recognition. We started getting a lot of calls, especially Russ (Kunkel) and Lee (Sklar).” “That sounds like an obvious thing but it isn't. Very, very few records are made like that anymore. They're mostly made peace meal, one part at a time. When I was producing a lot of records in the eighties and nineties I would put all the guys in the room. I produced a 'Spin Doctors' album where they were all in the room together. I never really got into doing one part at a time.” “As far as analog to digital I think that's overrated. If Tom Dowd had ProTools, working on all those early Aretha records, he would have absolutely loved it.” “The analog sound that you're (JFS) talking about comes to the signal, not where it ends up. Really good engineers know how to mic stuff. They know how to mic a drum kit and mic a room that has four or five guys in it. At that point the difference between recording to tape or ProTools is minuscule. More is made out of it then is there. It's about the chain - the mic's and preamps that you use. Again, it very much has to do with guys in a room. You don't have guys in a room together you're not going to get that sound. It's what happens when everyone plays together." “All my favorite guitar players growing up were like that too. Steve Cropper, Curtis Mayfield, Cornell Dupree, David T. Walker - all those guys knew how to set up a song. Everybody else was listening to lead guitar and I was listening to these guys. To me, Steve Croppers playing on those Stax/Volt Records is the essence of how you play a song. You have to serve the song.” “I have a huge ego, but when I have to find the right part for a song that upstages my ego. When I was playing with James (Taylor) and Carol (King) I was jamming all the time, everyday. I was able to play solos, turn up and play louder.” “When you hear a song like 'You've Got A Friend,' forget your ego. That's a great song, all I try to do is find some way to help tell the story.” “Musicians never want it to end. They don't want to be part of a moment that only lasts a few years and goes away.” “Musicians are all about love and the musicians I know (and I know a lot of them) absolutely love each other. They love playing together, they glow, and I do too. It a profound situation to play music with other people. It creates a bond, especially when you've been playing and listening since you were ten. It was a lifetime thing with all of us.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

I've interviewed a number if guitarists on my program. Cats like Kenny Burrell who were making up the rules with Donald Byrd and Elvin Jones in Detroit. Locked in a pocket of communal musical connection the same way my guest can hit flurries of notes that have you flying and showing you the way. Regional Music in the Americas was rampant in Appalchia, Chicago Blues, Gulf Coast, and the North Bay SoCa Latin funk escapade. It was also rampant in New Orleans where my guest hails from. He came of age with his musical brothers Art, George and Zigaboo playing music that felt good be it swamp funk or ballads it was emotive. With the feel of the Caribbean and Gulf Coast Rhythms. There were pockets of players from Chuck Rainey and Bernard Purdie Richard Tee in New York To Joe Sample and Wilton Felder  who came from the wards in Houston. Pockets of soul intermeshing with Gospel and Wild Magnolias in A Cabbage Alley of pimps, dancers, lights, jazz, blues you can use for enlightenment. My guest today is in the same master guitar class as Kenny Burrell Grant Green, Pat Martino and Melvin Sparks. If he had chose to go to New York he would have wound up being a jazzer with a recognizable name like the those above but the love was odd metered and melodic be it in the right place at the wrong time @ Sea-Saint records. My guest has a funk style like David T. Walker and Phil Upchurch but he is part of a family whose  sum is always greater than its parts. He got the memo about being a decent human being and not standing in the middle of the road with some Wild Tchoupitoulis. EBAN BROWN GUITARIST/VOCALIST/COMPOSER/ACTOR Hailing from Newark, NJ, Harold Eban Brown is a world-renowned guitarist, composer and singer. Motivated by strong family support and a firm belief in God, Eban exhibited a gift for music at an exceptionally early age. Eban began playing guitar and singing with several gospel groups by age seven and as he became older his interest in studying jazz guitar was influenced by Wes Montgomery, George Benson, David T. Walker, Larry Carlton, Grant Geissman, George Duke, and Bobby Caldwell. It was during this time that Eban Brown, realized another gift, that of songwriter. In 1991, Eban Brown became the lead vocalist for his idol artist group RAY, GOODMAN & BROWN (better known as The MOMENTS). Although Eban was originally chosen to sign on as the group's guitarist, instead, he was instantly moved to the frontline to sing with his idol group. The founding members thought his physical characteristics were too young at the time to take promotional photos for marketing, so he continued to perform with the group for two and a half years. Later Eban would become a member of the one time Grammy-Award winning group; The MANHATTANS (featuring Gerald Alston and Blue Lovett) his stay was very short lived due to future accomplishments. In 1993, Eban became the lead vocalist of the DELFONICS, and was the first lead vocalist of the DELFONICS to be inducted into the 98.7 KISS FM HALL OF FAME, in New York City, the NAACP HALL OF FAME, in Atlanta, GA and in 1996, received a NAACP award for his accomplishments as lead vocalist of The DELFONICS. The Delfonics, which featured Wilbert Hart, Major Harris and Eban Brown, has dazzled fans overseas, as well as the United States. In 1995, with the DELFONICS, Eban recorded a live album "Wil Hart and The DELFONICS live in Chattanooga, TN which was considered one of the group's most treasured recordings. In 1994, Eban Brown also produced two songs for Rap Artist Rob Base, on the Album "Break of Dawn", which featured the DELFONICS, the two songs were "Are You With Me", and "Chillin”. In 1998, due to adversity with the music business Brown took a two-year break to structure family life before striking success again. In April 2000, unexpectedly, Brown became the lead vocalist of the world renowned STYLISTICS, following Mr. Russell Thompkins Jr., the original lead vocalist. As it stands, Eban is the youngest Classic Soul recording artist in the History of Classic Soul Music. In 2002, Eban formed Stardom Records, with his first solo album release, entitled "MASTER SUITE", a Jazz/Pop masterpiece with an amazing acoustic guitar feel. In July 2004 came Eban's second album release entitled "RESTLESS SOUL", which is highly influenced by pop with jazz overtones. In 2006, Eban released his third album entitled "EXIT 15", it's a collection of 10 Selections which five are originals and the other five are remakes that mark some of the greatest songs he always promised he would record. In 2008, Eban has teamed up with Rap Superstar “NAS” on a Song called “CAN'T STOP US NOW”, which is a sample of “Message To A Black Man” from a 70's Group “The Whatnauts”. In 2009, Eban released his first all instrumental album titled “DETERMINISM” which debuts his sister Lisa Brown on vocals. In 2014, Eban released his 5th Album titled “SUMMERTIME IN TOKYO” , which features an original Selection Tribute to The Late George Duke, including 4 very Well known remakes. One of Eban's many endeavors is to continue to record original music that people will enjoy listening to as well as write music for other artists'.In 2015, Eban released his first Dance Selection titled "NEVER GONNA LET YOU GO" which was launched in The United Kingdom and has been remixed and released as an extended Dance Version by DJ Stathis of Greece. Also in the same year, Eban composed a Children's Song called "EYES OF A CHILD" in which 100% of profits were donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital (A Specialist Children's Hospital) based in London. Earlier in 2015, Eban began acting in the role of a Baptist Preacher in the film "LOOKING FOR GOD". Release date to be determined - https://youtu.be/3AWYYz3JDlk.In 2016, Eban filmed and released his first Music Video along with a Pop/Dance single titled "NO OTHER LOVER". Due to the success of the "NO OTHER LOVER" Video, Eban completed a U.K. Promotional Tour which involved the BBC, and the TV Show - London Live.In January 2018, Eban announced his departure from The Stylistics as the Lead Vocalist after 18 years to focus on his career as a Solo Artist. With such a diverse background in R&B, Pop and Jazz, Eban Brown is available to perform at festivals, clubs and weddings as well as private and corporate events with a guarantee to satisfy the listening pleasure of any audience.Email: stardomrecords72@yahoo.comWebsite: www.ebanbrownmusic.net See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Byron Miller is emerging from a 12-year recording hiatus with his finest, flawless and most fully realized album as a leader, prophetically titled Psycho Bass. The album – the fourth of his career overall  - contains three of the last recorded performances of George Duke, special veteran guests Ndugu Chancler on drums, guitarist David T. Walker and percussionist Sheila E, as well as introduces the universe to the freshly chocolate minted fierceness of the Psycho Bass Band. Slammin’ from beginning to end, Psycho Bass is a non-stop, no-skip winner that is going to blow listeners minds to become the most beloved, raved over and uplifted album of the year.  Byron has played with Luther Vandross, Ludacris, Beyonce, Roy Ayers, and his mentor, the late George Duke, whom he started playing with at age 19.  Both melodic and percussive, the Byron Miller bass sound is as intoxicating as Pouilly-Fuissé wine from a brown paper sack, unimpeachably funky, instantly recognizable and clearly sourced from someone just a bit touched about the brain. No wonder legend has it that this soul brother is orbiting Earth not just as Byron Miller but also as his alien alias…Psycho Bass. Follow Byron on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
