Today we are revisiting one of my favourite chats with Deborah Hutton. In this episode, I asked the former international model if the window for my modelling career may have come and gone, and she informed me that, there was no window. Oh well, at least we cleared that up (lol). Deborah is fun. And talented. And driven. And creative. And super smart. And I enjoyed getting to know her (a little). In this organic conversational casserole, we spoke about being an international model at 16 (and the myriad of variables and challenges around that), strategic people vs. freestyle people, experiential learning, knowing who to trust, her three rules for success, identity, self-worth and looks, lifelong learning, her skin cancer journey, saying no to people, feeling ageless, passion projects and lots more. I recently had the pleasure of an inspiring conversation with Deborah Hutton. Deb is as iconic as she is gracious. She shared her story with great humility, sprinkled with a good dose of humour, as we chatted about her modeling and media career, her passion for health and wellbeing and the importance of giving back. Deb's insights on resilience, self-care and the power of reinvention will inspire and motivate you. Her message about sun safety is powerful and one you won't want to miss. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did!

In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, we sit down with Australian icon, Deb Hutton. She is a prime example of someone who has embraced life. Her credentials include television presenter, magazine editor and ambassador for charities close to her heart. As a teenager Deb left school at age 16 and had a motto - ‘Life is just to be lived'. She started her modelling career where her first job was the cover of Cosmo Magazine. ‘My life has been an adventurous tumble from one thing to another' says Deb ‘I just wanted to throw myself out there and see what life had for me.' In her 20s, Deb was picked as the face of Grace Brothers (now Myer) where she learnt how to stand up in front of a crowd and speak. ‘I was supported by many people,' says Deb, ‘without a doubt that is what has made the difference.' She went on to do the groundwork in her 30s. ‘As you age and you become wiser, and you learn a lot about yourself' says Deb. ‘It's that grounding of decisions, comfortability and knowing within yourself the steps you need to take.' But, you can never do it all on your own. Your tribe is paramount. ‘Surround yourself with the smartest people in the room, and I have stuck to that religiously.' The power of brand y-o-u is so important. ‘Around my 50's all my projects came to an end and I didn't know what would happen.' So, Deb stepped into the world of digital and started ‘Balance by Deborah Hutton', but she felt like she was on the hamster wheel. ‘After some time, I decided that I don't want that in my life anymore' says Deb, ‘You have to follow what you love. It's not about the money. It is about what makes you tick and what gets you out of bed in the morning.' She followed her gut instinct and teamed up with MyHouse to create her own range of homewares. Deb has had a life of highs and lows. Her battles with skin cancer have changed it all for her. ‘I've had to say this is just the way it is so let's just sit back and see what happens.' Out of her experience, Deb is now working with skin hospitals. ‘It's taken me in a direction I didn't expect but, I have worked with it – and there is a lesson in that.' Deb allowed the rawness of who she was to come out, resulting in a viral message of sun safety. So, what are Deb's key learnings for transforming a difficult situation into a possibility? ‘Find some sense of peace' says Deb, ‘because you become your own worst enemy if you sit in your head.' Meditation has changed the game for her. ‘Only amazing things can come out of journaling and leaning on people you love and trust.' So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Deb Hutton. Recorded 18 June 2017. Ms Ann and Richard discuss the worthiness of those getting Australian Honours, pass on John Edwards, focus on manifestation with Deborah Hutton, drum on why Pete Best was actually lucky, wonder when humour crosses the line from funny to offensive, gaze at the problem with Buzz Aldrin, unbox an interesting tip from a board game convention and finish on logic fallacies by considering briefly the straw man argument. This episode is dedicated with thanks to our one cumulative listener.
Professor Sunil Khilnani returns with Incarnations. In the first programme he profiles the pioneering photographer Lala Deen Dayal. Born in 1844, Lala Deen Dayal would go on to become the court photographer for the fabulously wealthy sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, who dubbed him the "bold warrior of photography". Earlier in his career, his images of the historic monuments and architecture of India had become a sensation, and a means by which Indian landmarks could be appreciated in the West. Over subsequent decades, Deen Dayal's carefully arranged portraits would open a window on a second aspect of a splendid, idealized India: the lifestyles of the late nineteenth-century elite. Though India had at this high point of the Raj become the world's leading stage for status display, which often involved the shooting of tigers, a person's status wasn't quite fixed unless the moment itself was shot - ideally by Deen Dayal himself. "Deen Dayal captured a particular moment of elite indulgence and excess," says Sunil Khilnani. "Just before it was swept away." Like many successful artists, before him and since, Deen Dayal became adept at selling his patrons the images of themselves they most wanted to see, and share. And his story might be simply a portrait of an artist as a public relations man, if his artistry wasn't so compelling and historically revealing. Without him, we wouldn't understand so powerfully the moment when India became the world's exotic, wondrous playground for the wealthy, before the modern world got in the way. Featuring interviews with artist Dayanita Singh and art historian Deborah Hutton. Producer: Martin Williams Executive Producer: Martin Smith Original music composed by Talvin Singh.
