My guest is Tom Segura, renowned comedian, writer, actor and director. We discuss the “how-to” of comedy writing and storytelling, and what the science of humor and the creative process reveal about human emotion and memory. We explore why surprise and the act of "saying the unspoken truth" activate the brain's reward circuits, as well as the subconscious mechanisms that shape our sense of what is funny. The episode also examines the bi-directional influence between comedy and cultural standards. It will interest anyone curious about the science of humor, the art of performance and emotional contagion. Read the episode show notes at hubermanlab.com. Today, we are delighted to welcome Amanda Gore, an Australian powerhouse from the Speaker Hall of Fame, as our guest. Amanda is a phenomenal communicator who blends her sharp insights with humor and heart, offering fresh perspectives on joy, emotional intelligence, change, management, and leadership. Get ready to laugh and learn as Amanda shares her story and powerful insights that have inspired her audiences worldwide. Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence (EQ) is more important than technical skills in leadership and life. EQ helps people navigate conflict, build trust, and maintain strong relationships. If someone feels psychologically safe, they will be more productive, creative, and loyal. The Brain Reacts First, Thinks Later The brain is wired for survival. So, when people feel threatened by someone's tone, body language, or words, they shift into fight-or-flight mode, making calm conversation almost impossible. Understanding that can help you lead with compassion and avoid escalation. Emotional Contagion Your emotional state does not stay with you. It spreads. The heart's magnetic field changes as your feelings change, which affects everyone around you. That is why a calm leader can anchor a room, and a stressed leader can wreck it. Lead Yourself First Leadership starts with managing your internal world, knowing what triggers you, and regulating how you respond in stressful situations. Self-awareness is the key because if you are emotionally reactive, you cannot guide others effectively. Simple Tools Regulate Big Emotions Regulating your emotions helps you stay grounded when things get tense. You do not need complicated methods to self-regulate. Breathing slowly and deeply while focusing on your heart area or just naming what you feel will allow you to shift your state almost instantly. Everyone Carries Invisible Baggage Most conflict stems from unmet emotional needs. People tend to react out of fear that they are not good enough, not safe enough, or do not belong. Keeping that in mind helps you respond with empathy instead of judging. Stay Connected in Conflict Instead of turning someone into the problem, it is better to externalize the issue. That way, both individuals can stay connected and tackle the problem together. So you can protect the relationship while still addressing what needs to change. Joy Culture starts with energy, not strategy. Joy is not just a nice-to-have feeling- it fuels performance. You can create more joy in your team by starting your meetings with gratitude, recognizing the wins, and being intentional about how you show up. Reframing Change The brain resists change because it does not like uncertainty. However, change is necessary for growth. Reframing change as a challenge instead of a threat will help you adapt faster and stay open to new possibilities. Focus Shapes Reality Your area of focus rewires your brain and shapes your relationships. Where your attention goes, your energy flows. Focus on the good in people; you will likely find more of it. If you focus on threats, however, you will create a defensive environment. As co-hosts Tim Burgess and Pilar Orti wrap up the Manager Emotions series, they explain why they're moving onto mindset, and how this is different from cognitivie tendencies (and why they might well be mixing the two up!). Plus, some feedback on our episode on Emotional Contagion, and Pilar shares an episode from Workplace Geeks where one of her connections talks about living with long-covid and how this affects her work life. https://www.audiem.io/podcasts/work-life-and-long-covid Get in touch with Pilar and Tim through the https://managementcafepodcast.com/contact/
For the fourth episode of our series on manager emotions we talk about Emotional Contagion, as it's something that keeps coming up. Emotional Contagion describes how one person's emotions can induce similar emotions in others. This is often happening at an unconscious level, for example, we mimic someone's facial expression and start to feel the same emotion. Managers should be especially mindful of this phenomenon and its potential impacts. When a leader gets angry or happy or sad, everyone around them also feels a bit of that same emotion. Leaders are a focal point of interaction meaning they are more susceptible to emotional contagion than followers. This brings both challenges and opportunities. Whilst emotional contagion often operates at a subconscious level, leaders can take deliberate steps to guide the emotional state of themselves and those around them. 00:20 mins Emotional contagion is an important concept for managers to understand - that your emotions impact those around you and vice versa. 1:20 Tim shares an example (possibly an urban myth): your co-workers become less happy if your partner has a bad boss. Even though the workplaces are separate, the bad boss means your partner is less happy. And this means you are less happy. And this unhappiness spreads to your co-workers. 2:00 As per the example above, the effects of emotional contagion spread beyond the workplace. Tim became conscious of this when running Shield GEO where many of the employees worked from home. What are the emotions and influences that a digital workplace brings into the sanctity of someone's home? 4:00 Pilar references a 2002 study by Sigal G. Barsade of the University of Pennsylvania titled "The Ripple Effect: Emotional Contagion and Its Influence on Group Behavior". It talks about emotional contagion as the transfer of emotion between individuals. 5:20 Tim shares an embarrassing story of grumbling about his workplace being negative, only for a co-worker to point out that maybe it was Tim's own negativity that was infecting the workplace! This valuable feedback helped him better understand his role in creating the work environment that he wanted. 6:50 Sometimes emotional contagion happens unconsciously. But other times we can deliberately spread an certain emotion. Going back to the Barsade paper it talks about moods as compared to emotions, making the point that these are easily influenced transient states. Our emotions change with time and different environmental stimuli. 8:45 If we are mindful of emotional contagion when going through challenging events like layoffs, it can change our behaviour. e.g. Perhaps we take steps to reduce anxiety. 9:40 Pilar points out that we don't just influence a group's emotions by interacting directly with the whole group. We can also work at a one-to-one level with individual members who will spread those emotions back through the group. 10:20 Emotional contagion gives a powerful argument for managers to moderate their emotional responses. When managers express emotions like anger it doesn't just impact the people they interact directly with. The effects ripple out. This also means there are wonderful opportunities for the manager to model helpful emotional behaviour and reactions. 11:55 Barsade's research showed that the spread starts with mimicking. People spontaneously mimicking each other's facial expressions, body language, speech patterns and verbal tones. And the mimicking triggers people to feel the emotions. Perhaps an argument for cameras off on some video calls? 13:30 Pilar shares that people who have had Botox injections in their face are perceived as less empathetic because they don't mimic, and so, their body doesn't prompt them to feel others' emotions. 15:00 There is also a conscious level of emotional contagion where we compare our mood to those around us and adjust accordingly. Am I the only one who is angry or happy in this group? 16:30 Tim found the ripple effect of emotions to be a helpful guide. When you treat someone with kindness or care, it doesn't end there. They carry that with them and spread it further. 17:45 Pilar points out that this is a good reminder that even small actions have an impact. And even if we don't see an immediate impact our efforts will be making some difference. 18:45 Interestingly the research found that negative emotions don't spread any faster than positive emotions. And in fact sometimes strong positive emotions can be too much. Tim speculates that this is a British attitude but alas, he's quite wrong, the paper came from the University of Pennsylvania. 20:40 Perhaps negative emotions are more inward focussed and therefore less likely to spread. But positive emotions are generally outward focussed. 22:30 The paper showed that most people were unaware of emotional contagion. Both unaware they were impacted by other's emotions and unaware they were impacting other's emotions. 23:15 Our hosts speculate on what to do when they see emotional contagion at work. It starts with awareness and bringing it into the open. Most of us have experienced the opposite - environments where certain emotions, generally "negative" ones, were not able to be expressed. And it can just lead to these forbidden emotions thriving and spreading behind the scenes. 25:00 Leaders also can't be the only ones responsible for the emotional state of the group. Some research has suggested that leaders are actually more susceptible to emotional contagion than "followers". 26:00 Pilar shares that some of her work in the pandemic left her soaking up the emotions of the group. 27:00 Tim has a shocking realisation. When he sold Shield GEO he tried to talk to all the employees about the transition. These 70 odd conversations left him exhausted, which he thought was due to many of the people feeling anxious and afraid. But he now wonders if he was actually the person spreading anxiety and fear through the group... 28:00 Pilar, as always, reframes this learning into a positive light. 29:30 Emotional contagion isn't just a face to face, real-time experience. All our behaviour is underpinned by emotion. So even in a distributed, primarily digital workplace emotions are still spreading. 30:30 We need self awareness about the impacts of our behaviour, both individually and in groups. What about you, dear listener? Do you think about emotional contagion and how you are impacted by the feelings of those around you? We'd love to hear from you! In this episode of the Jason and Mindy podcast, the hosts discuss various topics including dogs smelling stress in humans, the comeback of CDs, and the perfect summer day. They also share a random question and end with a quote about courage.https://www.lowtreestudios.com/https://www.youtube.com/@lowtreestudios- Dogs can smell stress in humans – and it alters their own behavior. University of Briston researchers say they found that our pet canines experience “emotional contagion” from the smell of human stress — leading them to make more “pessimistic” choices, and affecting their ability to learn. Previous research in humans suggests that the smell of a stressed person subconsciously affects the emotions and choices made by others near them, which led the researchers to wonder if the same is true with dogs.- Are CDs on their way back? Well, they're definitely on their way back into a new Subaru, as a “throwback” option. The latest generation WRX has a number of ‘finishing touches' available, allowing buyers to add all manner of extras, such as mud flaps, an engine underguard, and a first aid kit. But the most interesting – at least for 90s kids – is the optional CD player, neatly fitted under the center console's armrest. Of course, with the shift to downloads and streaming services, not many manufacturers even offer a CD option anymore, but if you still have some discs kicking around, Subaru's $375 CD Player Kit might be worth splashing out on. On the other hand, you could instead select the “automatic transmission” option for just $300… FUNNER SUMMER:What does the “perfect summer” look like to you? Lots of road trips? Camping? Back yard barbecues? Golf? According to a new survey, the absolutely ideal summer must include the following: 14 days with loved ones, 8 sunrises watched, and 11 dips in the water. That's from a poll of 2,000 adults in the US, which found that some of the most enjoyable things about summer include: spending time with family and friends (44%), enjoying BBQs (43%), longer days (42%), warmer weather (37%), and swimming (31%). On the down side, people were also asked about things that can ruin a beautiful summer. The top answer was too much heat, followed by being sick, or injured. And the average person expects to have to deal with one sunburn, and go through 2 bottles of sunscreen.

Have you ever felt so elated, that in that very moment, you felt yourself and the world around you were in perfect harmony? That feeling is joy! But for many of us, ‘joy' can seem elusive, almost impossible to experience, or an emotion that we feel we just don't have time for. And for some of us, it may feel like we have lost the ability to experience joy altogether. In this episode, our resident psychologist Dr Em explores the experience of Joy. What is it and how we can tap into it. We learn how mobilising joy is and how infectious and connecting it can be. Because as Dr Em explains, we are often surrounded by joy in our everyday lives, but don't pause long enough to see it. This is an incredibly powerful, uplifting conversation, but it may be difficult to listen to if you're currently experiencing hardship or trauma. Are your vibes contagious? More than you realize. We can actually "catch" cortisol from stressed individuals around us. Also, through mirror neurons, witnessing someone in a stressful event can increase your cortiscol levels as much as 40%. Not convinced? Think about how yawns are spread. Just seeing someone yawn can make you yawn. The same occurs with stress and emotions. Unfortunately, picking up stress from others can further develop the disease process. This week we had a great networking event where we discussed the popular TED Talk, "How to avoid catching prickly emotions from other people". Did you know there's a cactus nicknamed the "jumping cholla" for it's tendency to seemingly shoot cactus spines into unsuspecting passersby? The same thing can happen when we get too close to people having big emotions. When a spouse or co-parent is angry, hostile or negative, we can get hurt if we catch those feelings from them. Today we're going to give you and your clients some information and tools to avoid this “jumping cholla effect” or what we call emotional contagion.First we dig into how emotional contagion happens, where emotion comes from and how to work with clients to raise awareness about how their beliefs, expectations and even physical symptoms can contribute to this process. Then we offer some strategies we call "bubble wrap" to provide protection from any pricks that might be flying your way. These include understanding mirror neurons; cognitive reappraisal; "OK, So what, Now What"; and of course, boundaries. Here's to staying safe out there.Watch the TED Talk: Catching Prickly EmotionsFind a DCA® Divorce Coach: www.divorcecoachesacademy.com/coach-locatorLearn more about DCA® or any of the classes or events mentioned in this episode at the links below:Website: www.divorcecoachesacademy.comInstagram: www.instagram.com/divorcecoachesacademyLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/divorce-coaches-academyEmail: DCA@divorcecoachesacademy.com

That alone is a powerful tool to help combat feelings of isolation and build a more interconnected, joyful life. Aimee will also explain some of the science of emotional contagion, exploring how our emotions and physiological states are unconsciously influenced by those around us. And of course, Henry and Aimee will talk about the obstacles to sympathetic joy, like the fallacy of fairness and scarcity. With some science, personal anecdotes, and even some poetry, this episode will help you gain an understanding of the transformative potential of sympathetic joy. Dimitris Xygalatas | Anthropology, University of Connecticut"Ritual, Embodiment, and Emotional Contagion" While the Cognitive Science of Religion has brought the mind to the forefront of analysis, it has had little to say about the body. As a result, the mechanisms underlying much-discussed and well-documented effects often remain elusive. In this paper, I will discuss ritual's ability to facilitate the alignment of people's bodies, actions, and emotions by presenting findings from an interdisciplinary research program that combines laboratory and field methods and discussing the implications of such findings for ritual's role in promoting social coordination and group cohesion.

It happens unconsciously, without us even realizing it. But what exactly is emotional contagion? How does it manifest itself in our behavior, relationships, and everyday life? Let's explore emotional contagion from a seduction perspective as well as look at its effects on unhealthy and healthy empathy as well as the biology of belief. What is Emotional Contagion? First off, let's define emotional contagion in simple terms: It's when we catch or “absorb” another person's emotions just by being around them or interacting with them. We don't actually "feel" their embodied emotions like they do but instead, we become influenced by their emotional state so that our own behaviors start to adapt to fit theirs. This type of influence is sometimes referred to as "social proof." Social Proof is a psychological phenomenon where a person mirrors the behaviors of others in an attempt to connect and fit in. In essence, it's the notion that, since others are doing it, I should be doing it, too. When one person experiences an emotion such as fear or joy, those feelings spread quickly throughout the group in which they are present. It is an incredibly powerful phenomenon that has a deep impact on our behavior, relationships, and everyday life. Where Does Empathy Come In? So, empathy is an emotional capacity that allows us to understand and share the feelings of others. It is a powerful ability that can be used for good or ill, and it has been studied extensively by psychologists in both its positive and negative forms. Empathy enables us to more deeply connect with people, helping us form stronger relationships and build emotional bonds with those around us. By understanding empathy better, we can use it to create a healthier environment for all. Empathy without borders however is a prime candidate for emotional contagion; it's where people can accidentally label themselves as an HSP (highly sensitive person) when really, they just have poor emotional awareness and boundaries against emotional contagion. The Science of Seduction Ok, let's dive into seduction - one way to think about emotional contagion is through the lens of seduction. The science of seduction is an intriguing and complex subject that has been studied extensively by psychologists in both its positive and negative forms. It involves understanding emotional contagion, emotional intelligence, and the power of emotions to influence relationships. By understanding the science of seduction on a deeper level, we can use it to create a healthier environment for ourselves and our loved ones and also dodge bad relationship bullets! Seduction, it's not always a bad thing. Sometimes it can be really good but it is a complex and often misunderstood art. Understanding healthy seduction can help us create healthier environments for ourselves and our loved ones by enabling us to better connect with authentic people and form trustworthy long-lasting emotional bonds. Emotional contagion is an important part of the science of seduction – it's when we catch or “absorb” another person's lustful or sexual projections onto us - just by being around them or interacting with them. Seduction can be voluntary or involuntary, just like our breath. Many people enjoy consciously being seduced while, unfortunately, many people who have unhealed wounds, attract unconscious, seduction. Emotional intelligence really helps us here - it helps us understand how our own feelings and boundaries affect those around us so that we can use this knowledge to build stronger relationships with ourselves and others. How do you know if you're being seduced? Seduction can be a powerful tool for emotional connection and relationship building, but it can also be used to manipulate and control people. Dark seduction techniques involve emotional manipulation, coercion, and even emotional abuse in order to get what the perpetrator wants from their target. Protecting yourself from dark seduction requires you to recognize the signs of emotional manipulation, develop healthy boundaries and maintain emotional self-awareness. Emotional Power & Manipulation Recognizing the signs of emotional manipulation is key when it comes to protecting yourself from dark seduction. This could include someone attempting to guilt trip or shame you into doing something they want or trying to make you feel bad about your choices or decisions. It's important to trust your instincts if something doesn't feel right – don't let anyone pressure you into doing anything that makes you uncomfortable or unsafe. Developing healthy boundaries is another way of protecting yourself against dark seduction tactics. Healthy boundaries are necessary for any kind of relationship – romantic, platonic or otherwise – as they help define how we expect others to treat us without allowing them too much control over our lives. Setting limits on other people's behavior helps ensure that we remain in control of ourselves so that no one can take advantage of us. Finally, understanding the power of emotions to influence relationships allows us to effectively manage difficult situations while still maintaining meaningful connections with our peers. With these tools at hand, we can use seduction not only for romantic purposes but also for creating healthier environments where everyone benefits from strong emotional bonds and understanding communication between parties. Gretchen Rubin's model of The Four Tendencies is an incredibly powerful concept that has been used in psychology, relationships, and everyday life. It suggests that our emotional states are contagious, meaning that we can influence the emotional state of those around us simply by being present. This idea has far-reaching implications for understanding how our emotions affect others and for improving empathy and emotional intelligence. We've all experienced emotional contagion at one time or another – when we feel the emotions of those around us without realizing it. Again as we've already discussed, emotional contagion occurs when we catch or “absorb” the emotional state of someone else just by being around them or interacting with them. Then, in steps boundaries. Creating Emotional Boundaries Creating emotional boundaries is an important part of healthy relationships, but it can be difficult to know how to set them. The Gottman approach to emotional boundary setting is a powerful tool that can help couples create emotional safety in their relationship and foster greater connection. This approach focuses on understanding each other's emotional needs, communicating clearly and effectively, taking responsibility for one's own feelings and emotions, and respecting each other's differences. By using the Gottman approach to emotional boundary setting, couples can cultivate greater trust, intimacy, and understanding in their relationship. The Power of Healthy Empathy Empathy is a powerful emotional capacity that allows us to understand and share the feelings of others, but it can also be used for harm. It is important to understand when empathy has become unhealthy so we can protect our emotional wellbeing and the emotional safety of those around us. Let's discover how to identify when empathy has gone too far and some strategies for creating emotional boundaries in relationships. A prime example of when empathy goes too far is when a 3-year-old boy has been infected by the mind virus of gender dysphoria, either by scrolling on Instagram or seeing it on YouTube from the demonic energies that troll for innocence there. Instead of being a loving parent and letting the boy simply go through a process of maturation into adolescence and adulthood with loving guidance and firm boundaries around the biology of that child, unfortunately, an unhealthy, distorted version of empathy would allow that child to actually begin to think that they are the opposite gender of how they were born, which then would lead to even more serious mental health ramifications down the road which we see playing out in the world at large right now. So in other words, when empathy goes too far a helping hand actually harms someone else or yourself which in this case with gender dysphoria, you can see how this is absolutely tragic. A great podcast to listen to about this is the episode we did with JP Sears you can find that at JoshTrent.com/463 Having empathy is a powerful emotional capacity that allows us to understand and share the feelings of others. It can be used for good or evil, so it's important to learn how to have a healthy version of empathy in order to build strong relationships with those around us and create emotional safety. But when empathy has gone too far? Look no further than how emotional contagion affects our behavior, relationships, and everyday life by understanding the biology of belief. The Biology of Belief The concept of the Biology of Belief is based on the idea that our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us have a powerful effect on our emotional and physical health. It suggests that our beliefs shape our biology by literally changing how our cells and genes are expressed. The power of this concept lies in its potential to improve mental and emotional wellbeing as well as physical health. Our beliefs act like scripts that shape our behavior, emotional states, and the way we experience life. When it comes to emotional contagion, we can use these scripts to create positive emotional states in ourselves and in those around us. Positive emotions lead to increased empathy, emotional intelligence, and emotional safety within relationships. The Biology of Belief suggests that when we change or release old belief patterns, we can create new patterns of behavior which ultimately result in improved emotional and physical health. Our thoughts contain energy which has an influence on both our outer environment and on the inner workings of our body's cells. Recent scientific studies show that when we make conscious efforts to think positively about ourselves, others, or situations in general – rather than focusing on the negative – we can actually increase levels of dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins (the “happy hormones”) in the brain which help reduce stress levels, improve moods, and promote overall wellbeing. This is also widely known as the science of how thoughts become things otherwise known as psychoneuroimmunology. Biology + Neurochemicals When it comes to emotional contagion, this means that if one person projects positive emotions such as joy or peace onto another person, they could be influencing their neurochemistry by helping them feel relaxed or content. Similarly, if someone projects fearful emotions onto another person they could be creating a more anxious neurochemical state in that person by causing them to feel fear or worry even if there is no immediate danger present. In addition to influencing neurochemistry through emotional contagion, the Biology of Belief also suggests that we can use visualization techniques such as meditation or guided imagery to mentally create positive outcomes for ourselves or those around us by sending out waves of energy into the universe which create opportunities for healing effects both at a physical level and an emotional level. This practice helps us tap into greater self-awareness so we can identify unhelpful thought patterns which may need releasing as well as helpful thought patterns that need reinforcing – ultimately leading to improved mental and emotional wellbeing. Ultimately, understanding how beliefs shape our biology through emotional contagion helps us become more aware of how quickly emotions can spread from one person to another so we can take steps towards cultivating healthier connections with those around us for greater mental wellness. With this knowledge, we are empowered with the ability to make conscious decisions about how best to nourish ourselves emotionally so we can live fuller lives with more meaningful connections with those who matter most! Bruce Lipton's “Biology of Belief” Bruce Lipton's “Biology of Belief” is a revolutionary scientific theory that explores the connection between our beliefs, emotional states, and physical health. By exploring this connection, Lipton has created an alternative model for understanding the power of our mindset that profoundly impacts not only our emotional wellbeing but also how our cells and genes are expressed. The Biology of Belief suggests that our thoughts and emotions create energy which is then broadcasted into the world and also plays an essential role in shaping how our cells and genes are expressed. This means that when we think positively about ourselves or certain situations, we can literally change the expression of our cells at a molecular level. To put it simply: If we believe something to be true, it will become true in reality as well because it is given form through our thoughts and emotions. Better Boundaries With Visualization Techniques Moreover, by using visualization techniques such as meditation or guided imagery along with breathwork, we can use these belief systems to literally create positive outcomes for ourselves or those around us by sending out waves of energy into the universe which promote healing on both physical and emotional levels. This practice helps us to access greater self-awareness so we can identify what unhelpful patterns may need releasing as well as helpful ones that need reinforcing to improve mental wellbeing overall. Taking it Home: Self Love FTW At the end of the day, all of the aspects we've explored point towards greater self-awareness and greater self-love through the mechanisms or mediums of intuition, healthy, emotional boundaries, and specific practices you can do every single day that will strengthen your spiritual, emotional, and mental connection to the truth. And not just the objective truth, but the truth that tends to guide all of us in this world, and that is our subjective truth. "Sports hysteria" is a type of emotional contagion, where fans of the same team are all carried away by the same emotion. Dr. Stephanie Preston is a researcher of emotions and decision making, and she talks about how not displaying emotion is also a type of emotional contagion and is likely a consequence of the fact that we don't want to transmit out-of-control or negative emotions in a professional setting. It's a fascinating peek into altruism, empathy, and feelings. Dr. Stephanie D. Preston, PhD is Professor of Psychology and University of Michigan Faculty Ombuds. She received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research is on the interface between emotion and decision making, focusing on how people process others' emotions and how this affects offerings of help and on how people allocate resources. She has written a book titled, The Altruistic Urge: Why We're Driven to Help Others.

Today on Feminine Roadmap an insightful conversation about emotional contagion with retired clinical psychologist Dr. Bruce Hutchison. The world events of the past 3 years has left a massive emotional aftermath in its wake on our society. Dr. Bruce reminds us that emotions don't think and that has contributed to the current state of emotional turmoil we are experiencing. He talks about how to handle emotions personally, in society, and politics. When we carry on conversations, he shares how to become more emotionally aware of yourself and the person or people we are talking with. Since we all feel emotion, it is important to first become aware of our own emotional state while becoming present to the states of others. Emotions flow through society, passed on by mirror neurons. It's natural to begin to merge with others emotions especially when the situation is more charged. Our emotions naturally intensify during times of turmoil and can easily begin to run rampant causing arguments, division and the cancel culture as we have been experiencing. Without becoming present to our selves and others there is a danger of the emotional contagion continuing unchecked. Once we begin to change our thoughts and behavior, we can begin to change our emotional state. As we practice slowing ourselves down, paying attention to our body position, tone of voice, and breathing, we can change our behavior. Stepping back for a moment can often help give us a little perspective and bring our emotions in check. Dr. Bruce encourages listeners to be aware that emotions drive behavior and practice helpful, correct thoughts to manage your own emotions. He stresses how important it is to regulate our emotions in order to turn the tide of emotional turmoil in ourselves and our sphere of influence. Their 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are unlike anything else on the market. In fact, they were recently voted in Paleo Magazine as one of the top snacks of the year. The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on. The Champion of Change (ft. Cassandra Worthy, Speaker, Author, Change Enthusiast)Rethinking change and upheaval through the eyes of a Change EnthusiastOPENING QUOTE:"Whoa, change just hit. I'm feeling anxious, but that's got to mean good is in store. I'm in an opportunity. How am I going to choose to show up?" And then you start to transform that energetic signature and feel more of that excitement and enthusiasm.”—Cassandra WorthyGUEST BIO:Cassandra Worthy exploded onto the speaking scene in 2018 and is already seeing fees and volume that make even the most seasoned industry veterans blush. Her client list includes Procter & Gamble, Allstate, Johnson & Johnson, and WeWork. Before that, she spent 15 years in corporate America and began as a chemical engineer. Today, the only label that really fits the bill for Cassandra is change enthusiast.Show Links:WebsiteInstagramFacebookLinkedInYoutubeCORE TOPICS + DETAILS:[3:05] - What is Change Enthusiasm?Going beyond growth mindsetsCassandra has applied a pragmatic, structured engineering approach to creating a step-by-step practice for having a growth mindset and seeing change as an opportunity. It's a three-step process that includes the Signal, the Opportunity, and the Choice.[3:40] - The Signal, The Opportunity, and The ChoiceCassandra's formula for Change EnthusiasmThe Signal represents the difficult emotions we face when going through change, such as frustration, anxiety, and fear. The first step is acknowledging those emotions and allowing them to exist, trusting them as gifts, and letting them invite you into an opportunity to grow. That's the Opportunity— how can you grow in this moment? The third and final step is the Choice. It's when you decide, What am I going to do to step up? It gives us power when facing uncertainty.[12:30] - Keep a Compliment JournalLet it guide your directionUnsure of where your strengths and passions lie? Cassandra was, too. Then she began jotting down the compliments she received about herself. Pretty quickly, she began to get a clear picture of where her true strengths might be. She began pursuing these potential passions and whittled down her direction from there.[33:00] - Be an Emotional ContagionSpread a virus worth spreadingCassandra writes about what she calls Emotional Contagion— the way we can literally catch the emotional energy of those around us. That's why it's so important that we take responsibility for that energetic signature that we bring into every room. Be your full authentic self, but recognize what you bring to the space.[44:41] - Turning the Spotlight on Quiet QuittingCassandra's guidance for leadershipDon't diminish negative emotions felt by your people. Acknowledge them and create productive avenues for them to flow. Meanwhile, be aware of change fatigue. Many fast-growing companies are in such constant flux— within a world that's perpetually in flux itself— that people often find themselves simply worn out. Be aware of this, and find ways to re-engage with change in a positive way.RESOURCES:[7:00] Change Enthusiasm[19:09] Cassandra's StoryFollow Cassandra:WebsiteInstagramFacebookLinkedInYoutubeFollow Paul:Keynote Speaking WebsitePlaymakers PodcastThe Power of Playing OffenseLinkedInFacebookTwitterInstagramYoutubeSHOW PARTNER:The WHY InstituteAre you ready to find your ‘why'? Our emotions and behaviors can affect each other positively or negatively. We call this emotional contagion and it turns out that it's pretty normal to be affected by others mood, facial expressions and body language. As social creatures our brains are designed to pick up on and even mimic others. This is great when we are surrounded by happy unicorns. Where it gets problematic is when we are surrounded by other humans! In this episode I address negative emotional contagion and although we can't control others, there are many things we can do to combat negative emotional contagion in the workplace.
