Today we're diving deep into the fourth one: retaliation (also called punishment).Retaliation sounds simple: “You hurt me, so I'm going to make you feel exactly what I'm feeling.” It shows up as overt criticism, sarcasm, yelling… or the more subtle, covert version—silent treatment, withholding affection, passive-aggression, or “Eh, it was fine.”Terry Real calls this a perverse form of communication—a twisted attempt at repair. Deep down, we're hoping our partner will finally “get it,” feel remorse, and become accountable. But ironically, it always fails.
