Here in episode 186 - Why We Care what Other People Think, we are going to discuss this topic because It's a question that comes up a lot, especially for missionaries and young adults navigating big life transitions. In this episode, I dive into the fascinating reasons behind our innate desire to compare ourselves to others and worry about their perceptions of us. The truth is, this tendency to organize people into hierarchies and constantly assess our standing is a protective function of the brain - it has deep evolutionary roots in helping us ensure our survival. But just because it's natural doesn't mean we have to let it control us. I share practical strategies for managing comparison, like focusing more on what you think of yourself than what you imagine others are thinking. The key is recognizing that your worth isn't defined by anyone else's opinions - you get to decide what you believe about yourself. Whether you're preparing for a mission, currently serving, or adjusting to life after, this episode will help you understand why the comparison game is so tempting, and empower you to stay in your own lane. Your mission and your life are unique to you - focus on your own strengths and goals, and let go of the need to measure up to anyone else. I hope these insights help you embrace your potential with confidence. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. Our primitive brain does some amazing things for us. However, if we aren't paying attention, it can keep us stuck and struggling to create the kind of life we really want to have. When we learn to manage our primitive brain and engage our pre-frontal cortex, we have the capacity to really show up for our life in the ways we want. On today's podcast, we're learning just how to use your brain to do what you really want to do.
In this episode of This Daring Adventure podcast, I explore the pivotal role of the prefrontal cortex in bridging the gap between our current selves and our desired future. We look at the brain's architecture, focusing on the prefrontal cortex as the 'CEO' responsible for planning, decision-making, and impulse control. Understanding and optimizing the function of our prefrontal cortex can help us override primitive survival mechanisms that often keep us stuck in counterproductive habits. Learn that through embracing mindfulness, cognitive challenges, and healthy lifestyle habits, we can rewire our brains for sustainable change, ultimately leading to a more intentional and fulfilling life.00:34 Understanding the Brain: Prefrontal Cortex04:03 The Power of the Prefrontal Cortex04:42 The Primitive Brain and Its Functions11:11 The Prefrontal Cortex and Emotional Regulation12:03 The Prefrontal Cortex as the Control Center12:10 The Role of the Prefrontal Cortex in Decision Making16:18 Taking Care of Your Brain19:03 Overriding the Primitive Brain with the Prefrontal Cortex25:09 Rewiring Your Brain for ChangeOn March 22nd at 11 AM EST, I am offering a free masterclass on Building a Better Relationship with Yourself. His highly acclaimed TEDx talk The Importance of Being In-Authentic continues to reach millions of people, as does his own YouTube Channel. Most professionals are on video more these days than they ever thought they would be. As a result, making the best first impression on camera is more essential to our work than ever before. In this conversation, Mark and I explore several of the key principles that will help us start better in virtual interactions. Key Points We make judgment calls very quickly depending on how someone shows up visually. It's your duty to influence and persuade — and we all do this in some way already to change outcomes. While we're used to viewing content on screen (television, movies, YouTube) we aren't used to interacting and collaborating on screen. Use video in short, consistent ways. Tools like Loom can help us do on camera what we already know works well in person: regular interaction. Your smile can set the tone for an interaction and it's important to use a visual aid to remind you of this if you're staring at black boxes on screen. Bring your gestures into the camera frame. Gestures that match the cadence and rhythm can help connect your audience with your message. Have you ever wondered why it is so hard to press stop at the end of a cliffhanger Netflix episode and why it is so easy to click next and watch another hour when you know you should go to bed? Or why it is so hard to stop scrolling your phone when you know you should be doing something much more productive or meaningful? Or perhaps, why you often reach for the sweet treat in the afternoon rather than have the carrots and hummus in the fridge? It comes down to our motivation and our primitive brain's desire to move towards pleasure, avoid pain and conserve energy, otherwise known as the Motivational Triad. In today's podcast, I'm going to be sharing: - How we can overcome our primitive brain and find new strategies to increase motivation - The role dopamine plays in motivation and how to find ‘good' dopamine releases - Insights into how to find long-term happiness rather than short-term pleasure - How my husband James had a huge motivational shift - How you can find easy ways to do hard things And so much more… If you are wanting to feel more motivated and overcome procrastination or unwanted distractions, dive in and take a listen. I reflected on how much I love sitting at my microphone talking to all of you as I started this recording. I hadn't been confident when I started the podcast at all. I was so nervous about the mic and public speaking! But now, on episode 108, I see how I got over my fear by rising to the challenge through the power of mindset. And that's what my guest is here to talk about. Tracy Pleschourt is the founder of Self-Made U and the host of Secrets of the Self-Made podcast, and we have a wonderful conversation about thoughts and learning to think in a different way and accomplishing goals through self-control.Tracy talks about how we feel out of control and bury our heads in the sand which keeps us from achieving what we want. And what she teaches her clients is to ask themselves what they really want so they can define what is standing in their way. Self-Made U teaches the neuroscience of the brain, and understanding that enables decision-making and self-control. Tracy explains the four-part system SELF stands for, presents great questions to ask ourselves about our beliefs, and then she and I examine a decision I recently made that I wondered if I should second-guess. Spoiler: I made the right decision. Tracy led me in conversation to confirming that for myself. I loved this conversation! I hope this discussion inspires you and gives you questions to ask yourself, to get you moving, when you're faced with inertia and fear.About Tracy PleschourtTracy Pleschourt, the Founder of Self-Made U and the Host of Secrets of the Self-Made Podcast helps men and women achieve their goals and solve all problems FAST by developing SELF-CONTROL!Tracy has mastered and now teaches an operating system necessary to manage your mind and eliminate any obstacles, including overeating, overdrinking, time management, career & relationship changes and professional development. Today's guest on the podcast is Dr. Rebecca Heiss. She's a doctor of evolutionary biology and an electrifying keynote speaker. Her mission is to deliver science-backed solutions that help people overcome living on autopilot so that they can consciously craft a better life. This episode may be particularly interesting if, like me, you sometimes feel like you're on the hamster wheel of needing to produce increasingly more successful months in your business. As opposed to feeling relieved because you've performed well on past projects, you only feel heightened anxiety to perform even better in the times ahead. I wanted Rebecca on the podcast because, in addition to having academic credentials, she's also a straight shooter. She's insightful AND fun. She wants to help us all be less fearful and more happy!

For more details on this podcast visit: https://www.journeybeyondweightloss.com/blog/78 Episode 78: Your Primitive Brain Have you ever felt like you had 2 different parts of you that were fighting each other? For example, one part of you wants pizza and wine and chocolate while the other part of you wants to get your weight under control so you can feel better? It's the proverbial angel on one shoulder whispering one ear while on the other shoulder is the devil tempting you with immediate pleasure, right? What's going on here? Is there anything we can do to stop the war going on in our heads? Tune in to today's podcast to find out! Episode Highlights: (4:41) The primary motivations of the primitive brain are: 1) Seek anything that brings pleasure 2) Avoid anything that brings pain 3) Conserve energy at all costs. 4)Stick with people who are safe, fear those you don't know 5) Avoid being seen. Now, this is our primitive brain…. But our brains did evolve beyond this, right? So we have a human brain that has evolved past our primitive brain. This is called our “prefrontal cortex” (10:35) In order to lose weight and keep it off, what we need to do is to put the prefrontal cortex - the human brain - in charge of the primitive brain. We do this by planning ahead EVERYTHING we will eat, 24 hours in advance. This way we are not giving our primitive brain any chance of making a food decision. (13:14) This is why I always say the weight loss journey done well is a journey of powerful personal evolution. When you can take control over your primitive brain with food, you can do it with spending, you can do it with drinking, you can do it with exercise, you can do it with relationships, you can do it with time management, you can just watch yourself coming more and more into alignment with your goals and dreams, evolving yourself, getting better all the time.

And then immediately made an announcement with his very classic, open body language. If you compare that to the royal family, the Queen of England isn't just a woman, mother, and grandmother. She represents the country. In fact, she is the country. The law says that. If she doesn't come out and say something, the country is silent. Tony Blair's ratings go up massively, the Queen's ratings plummet, immediately, because one was there and open, and one wasn't."Resources Mentioned In This EpisodeArticle - Is Lying Ever Right? at Catholic AnswersArticle - Non Verbal Skills and Abilities by Ron RiggioMusic - Dirty Loops Movie - Count Me In About The International Leadership Association (ILA)The ILA was created in 1999 to bring together professionals with a keen interest in the study, practice, and teaching of leadership.
I am passionate about teaching people about their brains. So in this episode I want to explain how your primitive brain reacts to joy. If we don't understand that our primitive brain is designed to keep us safe, out of harms way, AND to seek pleasure. We think there is something wrong with us. We think we are broken. What to do: Look for bright spots. Not some toxic positivity here, but train your brain to see. Train your brain to watch for moments to capture. Stressful times will come and go. And name your primitive brain here.

Dr. Krystal Sodaitis is here to discuss Our Primitive Brain, Planning, and Rebellion. There seems to be so much resistance to planning, whether it be exercise, self-care, or simply reading a book. Planning is scientifically based. There are two main parts of our brain—the one that sets long term goals and the one that protects us. These two parts of our brains are frequently at odds when it comes to planning and goals around food. (For example, our primitive brain wants us to eat more frequently while the pre-frontal cortex brain says it's okay to do some intermittent fasting.) How do we train ourselves to listen to the side of our brains that are in line with our long-term goals? Krystal will help raise our awareness regarding this topic and discuss ways to make this happen. Dr Sodaitis is a board-certified pediatrician, wife, mother, life and weight coach (certified through The Life Coach School), healthcare executive, lifelong learner and yo-yo dieter in recovery. She transitioned from academic medicine to working for a health insurance company in 2013. She has held both clinical and nonclinical leadership positions and can relate to the different lifestyle challenges working from home versus working at a hospital or clinic setting can bring. Our brain is a complex organ that performs many functions. There are two main parts of our brains. The primitive brain and then the cognitive or higher brain. In today's podcast, we are going to discuss the primitive brain and what its job is. This part of our brain functions from a motivation triad: to seek pleasure, avoid pain, and conserve energy. This part of our brain helps keep us safe and performs to keep us alive, but sometimes it can also keep us stuck and stagnant. Join me this week as I discuss the primitive brain, what happens, how this affects us, and how it relates to us spiritually.

We can so easily be wrapped up in fear in our everyday that we begin to create stories in the mind as a way to excuse ourselves from our fears. After all, this is the part of us that keeps us safe and out of danger. In today's episode we discuss the role of our primitive (reptilian) brain and how it affects our daily actions, decisions and behaviors. We begin with a grounding Breathwork exercise to tune into how our bodies are feeling and how it may be speaking to us so that we can glean new truths and insights.Resources:• 1:1 Healing Sessions• Instagram: @pathtobecoming• Join Our Private Facebook Group• Join Our Newsletter• Download Our Breathwork Audio• Read the blog
More detail about the primitive brain and where OCD and being kept awake by your partner snoring comes from! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ginlalli/message
Your primitive brain seeks to minimize pain, maximize pleasure, and avoid work. While this evolutionary trait benefited our species when food was scarce, today it causes us to make food choices that do not serve our bodies. In contrast, the prefrontal cortex is implicated in logical thought, rational decision making and planning. During this podcast I discuss why planning ahead, which uses the prefrontal cortex, rather than making decisions on the fly using the primitive brain is necessary to living a naturally healthy life. I also provide strategies and examples of how to plan meals ahead of time.
STAYFIT2FLY Podcast- Keeping Airline Pilots Healthy For Life
Today at the Stayfit2fly Podcast we are going to be talking about why it is so hard to make good food choices. Your health should be the most important thing to your brain but when you are craving french fries it sure doesn't seem that way.Your brain has 2 different parts that make decisions for you. The prefrontal cortex and the primitive brain. These are 2 very different systems. The primitive brain is what some people call, the dog brain. It’s main job is to keep you alive. And it’s very good at it. It has no care about your future. It can not think long term. It will knock over toddlers on bikes and dart around cars to get to the Barbecue grill, tip it to the ground and eat 5 steaks. Do you ever feel like this when you’re starving lol?The prefrontal cortex is your more advanced brain. It houses language skills, can delay gratification for a bigger reward in the future, multi-tasks and can plan strategically. It can go through pain and discomfort now, for growth later. This is the part of your brain that you want to use when you make food choices. The primitive brain or dog brain, for this example, will eat anything and everything regardless of if he’s hungry, or already eaten enough or if it’s good for his body. It’s a dog. If there is food. He will eat it. Today's Podcast ends with a challenge. Get the free worksheet to help you complete the challenge and all other show notes here: https://www.stayfit2fly.com/episode/7

Primal hierarchy is embedded in our culture and our brains. Rather than seeking status and power and control over others (and protecting and avoiding people who want to boss us around), what happens when we experience the “shared heart” of a well-tuned circle… where people join their power WITH each other to bring mutual relief, support, co-creation, and emotional freedom for all? https://emotionalfreedom.love/

Have you ever wondered why you are stressed or worried about something that you logically understand is not that big of a deal? Do you have things in your life that you totally know what you could and should be doing better, but you just can't seem to do it. In this episode, learn about the amazing way that your primitive brain works and how some of it is incredibly helpful and how lots of it is more like the way a toddler throws a tantrum. The key to understanding all of this is that having that awareness creates authority.
Tens of thousands of years ago, the primitive brain was necessary to encourage decisions that benefited the survival of our species. Today, the primitive brain often encourages behaviors that don’t serve our bodies. For example, our primitive brain releases feel-good neurotransmitters when we eat foods high in nutrients, which was beneficial when food was scarce but today food is very abundant. In addition, highly processed foods artificially concentrate these nutrients causing an increased release of feel-good neurotransmitters and making foods addictive. During the podcast, Dr. Vaughn introduces the primitive brain as a basic concept in preparation for further discussions on the addictive properties of processed foods.
Today I talk about why our brains give negative emotions the same gravity as death — and what we can do about it.
In this outtake from Episode #11 Chris summarizes Abandonment and Engulfment and how it's influenced by our Primitive Brain. Do you sometimes want to eat unchecked? Totally without restrictions? Recently, I found myself in a situation where I had allowed my primitive brain to make my decisions. After some serious thought work, I uncovered a thought that splurging and allowing my primitive brain to run the show was “fun.” The result, however, was feeling sick and not living in integrity with my higher personal goals. Not so much fun. As I have discussed in other podcasts, the primitive brain attempts to seek pleasure, avoid discomfort and expend the least amount of energy possible. Consequently, decisions made from the primitive brain typically don’t serve our higher goals. In this podcast, I discuss my personal experience at the movies and explain how a planned splurge went wrong.
Have you ever considered all the things in your life that you’ve started and stopped? All the things you didn’t follow through on, such as professional aspirations, personal commitments, gym memberships and weight loss programs? We’ve all had the experience of getting a great plan and then watching it fizzle out. We give ourselves innocent sounding excuses, but most of the time this is our primitive brain seeking the path of least resistance. In this podcast, I ask the question “How different would your life be if you ALWAYS followed through on your plans?” and discuss how our primitive brain often sabotages plans, including weight loss efforts.

#002: Your brain is wired for survival on the savannah. It is not wired to handle modern day stressors. Your brain doesn't care if you are stressed, fat, sad, anxious, lonely, distracted and underutilizing your talents. Your brain only cares about keeping you alive (so you can replicate your DNA). If you want to live your best life, you have to learn to manage your brain. In this episode, you will learn how your brain holds you back, and simple ways to reduce stress in an instant, so you can decide what you want to think, feel, and do. Welcome to episode #619 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #619 - Host: Mitch Joel. In business you have to understand your customers... and your audience. We often talk about the power of getting better at communicating. This is true. Still, one of the largest parts of communications is usually an arena that few business professionals spend any amount of time understanding: body language and unspoken cues. These, usually, are the difference between winning that pitch (and retaining that customer)... or not. Whether it's online, in person or just consuming his content, I always enjoy the time I spend with Mark Bowden. He's perfectly engaging, entertaining and there's always something to learn. There is this powerful notion that success comes not from what we say, but what we do and how we say it. This power of communications is powerful. Few people truly have the expertise of Mark Bowden. He has developed cutting-edge techniques to stand out, win trust and grow profits through the power of communication. Some would call him a body language expert. I believe he is much more than that. He runs a company called Truthplane. He's written the bestselling business books Winning Body Language, Winning Body Language for Sales Professionals and Tame the Primitive Brain. Mark is also the co-creator of online course, Presentation Genius. Mark has a highly viewed TEDx talk and his YouTube Channel has over 3 million views. Mark Bowden is an expert in human behaviour and body language. His bestselling books include the bestselling Winning Body Language; Winning Body Language for Sales Professionals ; and Tame the Primitive Brain – 28 Ways in 28 Days to Manage the Most Impulsive Behaviors at Work. Bowden originally received a university degree in performance in the UK, and studied the gesture-control methods of Jacques Lecoq’s Laboratory of Movement in Paris. He then went on to work with leading practitioners of movement psychology, building upon the influence techniques of Dr. Milton Erickson. 33% off Pain Relief Miracle Fear is one of our most primitive defense mechanisms. It is the reason that humans as a species exist. Our ability to notice danger and to feel are what keep us safe. The problem is that we don't live in the same world we did 10,000 years ago. We no longer need to be on guard at all times for fear of being eaten by wild animals. The way we feel fear has not evolved to match the world we live in. Because of this, our subconscious disposition is towards fear. This makes openness, connection, and love harder. This week I have a conversation with Rick Wilkes about fear, love, the primitive brain, and how we can use EFT to transform our daily experience to be filled with more love and more connection. Guest: Rick Wilkes, LMT Contact Info: thrivingnow.com, Rick@Thrivingnow.com, 1-828-357-4674 or 1-888-222-3856 Bio: Rick Wilkes is an EFT practitioner based in Asheville, NC. Here's what one of Rick's loyal clients says: “Working with Rick Wilkes both privately and on team calls has helped me greatly to release the past, move more confidently into the future, and mostly to be more joyfully present in the now. Rick’s open-hearted broader perspective, amazing intuition, and great sense of humor always help me to get right to the core and effectively reframe whatever issue I have.
