Rosemarie DeWitt may not love watching horror movies, but she's certainly an absolute ace when acting in them. Soon after Smile became a genre sensation in 2022, Paramount green lit a sequel. While it was abundantly clear that first-time feature filmmaker Parker Finn was a next-level creative with an exceptional eye for top-tier talent and eerie imagery, the truth of the matter is, we don't often see sequels do the “bigger and better” thing well and with purpose. That's not the case with Finn's Smile 2, however.The sequel focuses on Naomi Scott's Skye Riley, a global pop sensation who hit a rough patch courtesy of substance abuse struggles and a terrible car accident. With her mom and manager, played by DeWitt, at her back, Skye readies herself for her comeback tour. The pressure is astronomical, and her mom often reminds her of just that; she's only getting one second chance. As though the stakes couldn't be higher, Skye then has a downright nightmarish encounter. If you're one of those people that tell others that they should smile more, you likely stop doing that after watching the Smile movies. The latest installment is “Smile 2” which carries on the grin win that was 2022's “Smile.” In this sequel, we pick right up after the events of the first movie which then introduces us to Skye Riley, a world famous pop star, who is the next in line for the smile curse. She sees someone off themselves right in front of her and the curse is bestowed upon her as is the plot of these movies. Of course, she starts seeing freaky-deaky visions that gradually drive her mad and causes her to lash out and embarrass herself. Considering that she's a Taylor Swift-type world famous pop star, this raises the stakes exponentially as she's being driven insane but in the very public eye. Can she defeat the smile curse and how many people will die in the process? Is it worth a trip to the theater to find out? Synopsis The smile virus/demon from Smile is back and is tormenting a young pop star named Skye Riley. Skye is a recovering addict attempting to relaunch her career with a world tour. While visiting her former dealer to score some pain killers for a back injury, she witnesses him commit suicide in front of her and infect her with some kind of ancient evil. Adding to the pressures of fame, rehearsals, and recovery; she is beset by hallucinations of people with creepy smiles out to get her. Review of Smile 2 This smile demon concept is like the lovechild of The Evil Dead and It Follows, and frankly, I'm a fan. This film was artistically made, delved deep into themes of trauma and mental health in a unique and terrifying way. I couldn't help but think of the public mental breakdowns of celebrities like Brittany Spears while watching this movie. It really gives perspective into the pressures of a job where hundreds of people are relying on you to perform. That and the inherent creepiness of parasocial relationships with fans that are obsessed with you. It made it hard to tell where the demon ended and where this pop star's surreal reality began.  I thought Naomi Scott was great to watch as Skye. She has very expressive eyes and portrayed the terror and helplessness of her situation very well. Parker Finn, the writer/director of this and the previous film is a talent to watch. I can't wait to see what he comes up with outside of this franchise. Score 9/10

And they're super random!  First, our good friend Bibbs returns to help Christy with a review of "Smile 2," the sequel to the 2022 horror hit "Smile." Naomi Scott is tremendous as a pop star possessed by the evil smiley-face spirit, just as she's about to launch a world tour. Not exactly the era you want to revisit. In theaters. Then, Alonso and Christy discuss one of the year's best films, Sean Baker's "Anora," winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Mikey Madison gives a star-making performance as the titular stripper, who gets swept up in a whirlwind romance with the impetuous son of a Russian oligarch. We loved it. In limited release now before going wider in November. Finally, we catch up with "Piece by Piece," the LEGO animated documentary about prolific producer/singer/songwriter Pharrell Williams. We loved this one, too. Beyond the impossible cuteness of seeing LEGO Snoop Dogg and Gwen Stefani, we were impressed with the clever details and surprising emotion. In theaters.
