Rosemarie DeWitt may not love watching horror movies, but she's certainly an absolute ace when acting in them. Soon after Smile became a genre sensation in 2022, Paramount green lit a sequel. While it was abundantly clear that first-time feature filmmaker Parker Finn was a next-level creative with an exceptional eye for top-tier talent and eerie imagery, the truth of the matter is, we don't often see sequels do the “bigger and better” thing well and with purpose. That's not the case with Finn's Smile 2, however. The sequel focuses on Naomi Scott's Skye Riley, a global pop sensation who hit a rough patch courtesy of substance abuse struggles and a terrible car accident. With her mom and manager, played by DeWitt, at her back, Skye readies herself for her comeback tour. The pressure is astronomical, and her mom often reminds her of just that; she's only getting one second chance. As though the stakes couldn't be higher, Skye then has a downright nightmarish encounter. She witnesses someone take his own life and, in the process, he gives her the smile curse. In celebration of Smile 2's nationwide release, and hugely successful first weekend at the box office, DeWitt joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to celebrate her filmography and dig into why an actor who's terrified of horror films wants to make them. We are back with another TUESDAY DROP! The crew starts off discussing the issues with trilogies and sequels and why and how they miss the mark. Ivy is back to chat and he tells us about his “Wipe Me Down” cycling class. And yes the crew is is diiscussing what people are calling the best horror movie of the year, “Smile 2.” We discuss the intro was and how does the entity chooses it's victim in a room of victims , which retroactively speaking, plays with a larger theme at the end. We have to discuss the main character Skye, played by Naomi Scott. We debate if she was working on herself truly, or not. Ivy discusses the lack of discernment between Skye and Louis and why she chose to stay with him, as opposed to leaving. We all pick Naomi's Oscar winning scene from the film. If you're a new listener , or an old listener , Jason hates flashback, so we talk about if they worked or not within this film. The jump scares are cheap thrills, we discuss if “Smile” utilizes them properly or poorly. We discuss the ending , was it predictable? Is the next film going to go larger or will it be scaled back? Would you like the Smile entity in a tv show? We discuss why horror doesn't get love at the Academy. We also debate which entity would we rather deal with , Candyman , Evil Dead or the Smile Entity. Ivy dropped a short, link is in our bio! However we answer the most important question , WAS IT GOOD THOUGH!?

Horror films are rarely embraced on the awards circuit, but there's no denying that Naomi Scott gives one of the very best performances of 2024 in Smile 2. After depicting an intimate and grounded nightmare in 2022's Smile via Sosie Bacon's Rose, a therapist, writer-director Parker Finn is putting the Smile curse on a bigger stage in the sequel. Scott headlines the new film as Skye Riley, a hugely successful pop star whose career took a downturn due to substance abuse struggles and a devastating car crash. Now, however, Skye is gearing up for a comeback tour. She's already feeling the immense pressure to deliver while constantly being in the public eye, but then she gets an added challenge — not only must Skye make the most of her one and only chance to relaunch her career and brand, but she's got to do so after catching the Smile curse. How exactly does one hit the point in their career when they're enthusiastic about a hugely ambitious role that demands they take it to an 11 from start to finish? That's exactly what I dug into with Scott during her return to Collider Ladies Night after appearing on the show back in 2021. During that first Ladies Night chat, we dug into Scott's journey in film and television from a business perspective, retracting her steps from project to project. This time around, however, we put the spotlight on the evolution of her craft — a craft so well-refined and powerful that Scott is willing and able to take Skye to places that demand every ounce of her being, both emotionally and physically. I don't care about Halloween this year, 2024. (Probably because Im old, and crabby. I like seeing slutty costumes, but Im just too lazy) “Girl” trouble. If you're one of those people that tell others that they should smile more, you likely stop doing that after watching the Smile movies. The latest installment is “Smile 2” which carries on the grin win that was 2022's “Smile.” In this sequel, we pick right up after the events of the first movie which then introduces us to Skye Riley, a world famous pop star, who is the next in line for the smile curse. She sees someone off themselves right in front of her and the curse is bestowed upon her as is the plot of these movies. Of course, she starts seeing freaky-deaky visions that gradually drive her mad and causes her to lash out and embarrass herself. Considering that she's a Taylor Swift-type world famous pop star, this raises the stakes exponentially as she's being driven insane but in the very public eye. Can she defeat the smile curse and how many people will die in the process? Is it worth a trip to the theater to find out? Check out this episode to find out! “Smile 2” stars Naomi Scott, Rosemarie DeWitt, Kyle Gallner, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Drew Barrymore, Lukas Gage, Peter Jacobson, Ray Nicholson, Dylan Gelula, Raul Castillo, Zebedee Row and Roberts Jekabsons. Synopsis The smile virus/demon from Smile is back and is tormenting a young pop star named Skye Riley. Skye is a recovering addict attempting to relaunch her career with a world tour. While visiting her former dealer to score some pain killers for a back injury, she witnesses him commit suicide in front of her and infect her with some kind of ancient evil. Adding to the pressures of fame, rehearsals, and recovery; she is beset by hallucinations of people with creepy smiles out to get her. Review of Smile 2 This smile demon concept is like the lovechild of The Evil Dead and It Follows, and frankly, I'm a fan. This film was artistically made, delved deep into themes of trauma and mental health in a unique and terrifying way. I couldn't help but think of the public mental breakdowns of celebrities like Brittany Spears while watching this movie. It really gives perspective into the pressures of a job where hundreds of people are relying on you to perform. That and the inherent creepiness of parasocial relationships with fans that are obsessed with you. It made it hard to tell where the demon ended and where this pop star's surreal reality began. I thought Naomi Scott was great to watch as Skye. She has very expressive eyes and portrayed the terror and helplessness of her situation very well. Parker Finn, the writer/director of this and the previous film is a talent to watch. I can't wait to see what he comes up with outside of this franchise. Score 9/10

The term “triple threat” is rare these days in Hollywood. However, not only does Smile 2 star, Naomi Scott, embody the very definition of that term, as a gifted singer, dancer and actor, she reinvents it completely. With her performance in the terrifying new sequel to Parker Finn's Smile, Scott proves to everyone she is a dynamic force of charismatic nature to be reckoned with. And we were fortunate enough to chat with her about this stellar performance in the critically acclaimed horror film. The horror movie Smile was a massive hit. Its flashy new sequel Smile 2 finds the franchise's terrifying entity infecting a new host: a pop star (Naomi Scott) who's about to head out on tour after experiencing a trauma. And the movie has a lot to say about the horrors of pop stardom.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Spooky season is upon us, folks, and this week's Empire Podcast is even more of a horror show than usual, as Chris Hewitt talks to Naomi Scott about her fabulous performance in Parker Finn's scary sequel, Smile 2, [23:26 - 37:26 approx] and the team — Chris, James Dyer, Ben Travis, and Beth Webb — tackle two horror-related questions from listeners, including the horror flicks they think should have been nominated for Best Picture, and an impromptu Mount Rushmore of vampire films that really should have been called Count Rushmore. Elsewhere, much movie news is discussed, including the addition of Krypto the Superdog to James Gunn's Superman, Chris has a lovely chat with Woman Of The Hour director/star Anna Kendrick, [58:47 - 1:16:56 approx] and in the reviews section we tackle that very film, plus The Wild Robot, Smile 2, and The Apprentice, with guest reviewer Alex Godfrey. Oh, and the team, and a very special guest, bids Ben a heartfelt farewell as he heads off on paternity leave. Enjoy.
We're kinda scattered all over the place this week, but we'll always come back to you here at Breakfast All Day. Between Christy's jury duty and travel for both of us, we tried to squeeze in as many reviews as we could. And they're super random! First, our good friend Bibbs returns to help Christy with a review of "Smile 2," the sequel to the 2022 horror hit "Smile." Naomi Scott is tremendous as a pop star possessed by the evil smiley-face spirit, just as she's about to launch a world tour. Not exactly the era you want to revisit. In theaters. Then, Alonso and Christy discuss one of the year's best films, Sean Baker's "Anora," winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Mikey Madison gives a star-making performance as the titular stripper, who gets swept up in a whirlwind romance with the impetuous son of a Russian oligarch. We loved it. In limited release now before going wider in November. Finally, we catch up with "Piece by Piece," the LEGO animated documentary about prolific producer/singer/songwriter Pharrell Williams. We loved this one, too. Beyond the impossible cuteness of seeing LEGO Snoop Dogg and Gwen Stefani, we were impressed with the clever details and surprising emotion. In theaters. And for our Patreon friends, we have recaps of "The Penguin" (featuring a knockout Cristin Milioti performance) and episodes 5 and 6 of "Heartstopper" season 3. We'll catch up with "Only Murders in the Building" and "Agatha All Along" when we're both back in town early next week. Thanks for your patience and support! Listen as Ro and Phenom discuss Smile 2 and somehow manage to keep it spoiler-free Smile 2 opens in theaters Friday, October 18th. ♦♦ Director: Parker Finn Writers: Parker Finn Starring: C Noami Scott, Rosemari DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Peter Jacobson, Raul Castillo Runtime: 2 Hours 9 Minutes Synopsis: While preparing for a new tour after a tragic accident, fresh out of rehab, a young pop star witnesses a horrific event putting in motion a cycle of hallucinations brought on by a Smiling demonic entity that can take the form of anyone. Friends of the podcast Clarisse Loughrey (The Independent's chief film critic) and Mike Muncer (of Evolution Of Horror podcast fame) stop by to talk about three things: Joker: Folie à Deux, The Wild Robot and, um, Smile 2. As you probably worked out from the title of the episode here. Plus, Naomi Scott (the star of Smile 2) also pops up towards the end to talk about the fun and games she enjoyed - sort of - on the set of the eagerly anticipated horror sequel.

This week, Megan reviews SMILE 2 (2:06), Parker Finn's grisly sequel to his great horror film SMILE, about a pop star (Naomi Scott) contending with addiction recovery and a new tour amidst sinister occurrences. The sequel is much more nerve-wracking and gory! Then, we all (Dave, Evan, and Megan) talk about MADS (16:09), David Moreau's unique and intense French horror film about a trio of teens dealing with a potentially bad drug trip and gnarly bodily issues. Lastly, we discuss WOMAN OF THE HOUR (40:39), Anna Kendrick's sharp, tense, and compelling directorial debut about the true-crime story of an aspiring actress (Anna Kendrick also stars) in 1970s Los Angeles on the TV show "The Dating Game," where one of the bachelor contestants is a serial killer. And on our Patreon bonus episode, we dive into the 2024 horror film IMMACULATE, directed by Michael Mohan and starring Sydney Sweeney!
