Have you ever asked yourself: "How do I teach my kids accountability when I'm not always perfect myself?" "Does admitting my mistakes actually make me a weaker dad?" "What does it truly take to build unbreakable trust with my children?" If these questions resonate, get ready for a raw and honest conversation that dives deep into one of the most vital lessons dads can teach: extreme ownership. Larry Hagner and his son Ethan Hagner share unfiltered stories from their family's journey—moments of frustration, tough conversations, heartfelt apologies, and the profound vulnerability that comes with admitting when you're wrong. Together, they explore why modeling accountability as a father doesn't diminish your credibility; it fundamentally builds trust and earns lasting respect. Become the best husband and leader you can: www.thedadedge.com/mastermind In this powerful conversation, we dig into: The Counterintuitive Power of Apology: Larry recounts difficult parenting seasons, including struggles with anger and the immense pressure to be a "perfect" dad, and how genuine apologies transformed those moments. A Son's Perspective on Accountability: Ethan offers a candid view on how his father's apologies and moments of ownership directly shaped his own character and understanding of responsibility. Taking Responsibility in Real Life: Ethan shares valuable examples of how he's learned to embrace ownership in his own life, both at home and in the classroom, providing relatable lessons for parents and teens alike. Beyond Perfection: Why the goal of fatherhood isn't about never making mistakes, but about how you respond when you do. Building Unbreakable Trust: The direct link between a father's vulnerability, owning his flaws, and fostering deep, secure trust with his children. This episode delivers authentic wisdom and reassurance, reminding every dad (and future dad) out there that perfection isn't the goal—connection and growth are. Here's what research and observation highlight about parental accountability and child development: Children whose parents model admitting mistakes and apologizing have 40% higher levels of empathy and a stronger sense of personal responsibility. Parental vulnerability and honesty in moments of error significantly increase a child's trust in their parents, leading to 35% more open communication. Adolescents with fathers who consistently practice accountability show a 25% lower likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors. www.thedadedge.com/alliance www.1stphorm.com/dadedge www.thedadedge.com/mastermind

* The conversation in this episode is focused on gender. We both acknowledge that gender identity exists on a spectrum but will be discussing gender specifically as the socialized binary of male and female. This conversation explores the challenges and dynamics of gender roles and expectations in outdoor education. Dr. Steve Sassaman shares personal experiences and insights on how societal norms influence behavior in outdoor settings, the importance of role modeling, and the need for inclusivity in outdoor programs. The discussion highlights the shifting dynamics in participation and leadership roles, particularly among women, and emphasizes the importance of addressing privilege and identity in creating a more equitable outdoor experience. In this conversation, Phil and Steve explore the complexities of masculinity in outdoor education, the importance of redefining challenges to increase accessibility, and the need for intentional programming that prioritizes mental health and community building. They emphasize the value of critique and continuous learning in teaching, advocating for a humble approach that fosters trust and genuine connections with students. Challenging gender roles is crucial in outdoor education. Personal experiences shape our understanding of gender dynamics. Intentionality in shaping outdoor experiences can challenge norms. Masculinity can be expressed positively without dominance. Role modeling is essential for fostering inclusivity. Privilege can be used to empower marginalized voices. Inclusivity in outdoor spaces benefits everyone. Gender diversity is increasing in outdoor programs. We must address safety concerns for all participants. Creating true inclusion requires ongoing dialogue and reflection. Ego and socialized norms around masculinity are pervasive in outdoor education. Redefining challenges can increase accessibility for all participants. Intentional programming should prioritize mental health and community building. Saying 'no' can be just as impactful as pushing through challenges. Critique is essential for growth and improvement in outdoor education. Building trust requires humility and a willingness to learn from students. The history of outdoor education often overlooks contributions from women and people of color. Creating space for critical thought enhances the learning experience. Outdoor educators should focus on human skills alongside technical skills. Continuous learning is vital for educators to remain effective and relatable. Impact of Educational Leadership Episode 195 Hosted by: I. D. III for Isaiah Drone III Dawn Witte| Karl Berry | Shawania Marshall | Buddy Thornton | Role Modeling Better Faster Rethink the role of CEOs and role models. COVID-19 has brought a fundamental change in leadership in many organizations. The stand-out role models have shifted from directing a command-and-control crisis response to building and unleashing winning teams. A role model is a behavior others may emulate or admire because they're efficient or skilled. It would be best to model this behavior when creating visions and implementing plans against the goals. Students should know good teacher models by the way they present their lesson's objectives to take accountability for their learning. Role models must identify how the students will show mastery and how it will be measured. Knowing their skills, comfort level, and proficiency can help determine the professional development required to keep their competitive edge. Start at the end with the final goal or objective. You'll identify what the students will learn or be able to do. Leaders must oversee the goals for development identified, what professional development is considered, and the goal state of the person doing the role modeling. Karl Berry: Why do children from low socioeconomically disadvantaged communities lack positive role models, unlike in the past? Buddy Thornton: What are the myths and realities about perception and miscommunication regarding expressing the importance of student and teacher support equity? Shawania Marshall: How can public school leaders meet teachers where they are instead of giving expectations too far from their reach? Dawn Witte: How can we plan, practice, and follow up good teaching strategies that are both equitable and culturally responsive? The statement "How a woman feels can dictate how a home feels and functions" underscores the significant role that women often play in shaping the emotional climate and overall dynamics within a household. While it's important to recognize that feelings and responsibilities within a home should be shared by all family members, this statement highlights the unique influence that women, typically mothers and caretakers, can have on the family environment. Let's explore this concept further: 1. Emotional Tone-Setting: Women often contribute significantly to the emotional atmosphere in a home. Their mood, demeanor, and emotional well-being can set the tone for the entire household. A woman who feels content, fulfilled, and emotionally balanced is likely to radiate positivity, creating a harmonious environment that fosters emotional well-being for all family members. 2. Nurturing and Supportive Atmosphere: Women are often the primary nurturers in a family. When a woman feels emotionally supported and nurtured herself, she is better equipped to extend that care to others in the household. This nurturing atmosphere contributes to a sense of security and comfort, making the home a welcoming and supportive place for all family members. 3. Organizational Skills and Household Functioning: Women are frequently involved in managing the practical aspects of a home, from meal planning and household chores to organizing family schedules. How a woman feels about her responsibilities can impact the efficiency and functionality of these daily tasks. A woman who feels empowered and organized is more likely to create a well-run and smoothly functioning home. 4. Communication and Connection: Women often play a central role in facilitating communication and connection within a family. When a woman feels emotionally connected and communicative, it tends to foster open lines of dialogue among family members. Effective communication is crucial for resolving conflicts, understanding each other's needs, and building strong, supportive relationships. 5. Role Modeling for Children: The emotional well-being of a mother can significantly influence the emotional development of her children. Children often look to their mothers as emotional anchors. A woman who models resilience, empathy, and healthy emotional expression provides a valuable example for her children, shaping their own emotional intelligence and well-being. 6. Balancing Work and Home Life: Many women manage the delicate balance between work and home responsibilities. How a woman feels about this balance can impact her energy levels, stress levels, and overall well-being. A woman who feels supported in achieving a work-life balance is likely to contribute positively to the overall atmosphere in the home. 7. Creating a Safe Haven: Women often take on the role of creating a safe and comforting space within the home. When a woman feels emotionally secure and supported, she can extend that sense of safety to her family. This safe haven becomes a place where family members can seek solace, share their thoughts and feelings, and find comfort. It's essential to note that while women can play a significant role in shaping the emotional climate of a home, the responsibility for emotional well-being and household functioning should be a shared endeavor. Open communication, mutual support, and a collaborative approach among all family members contribute to a healthy and thriving home environment. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theyoungbloods/support
