Be it resolved, the gentle parenting ethos raises happier children

If you're a new parent, you've probably heard the term 'gentle parenting'. It's the latest trend that has taken hold among millennials who reject the authoritative principles under which they themselves were raised. This new, softer approach discourages consequences and punishments for bad behaviour in favour of positive reinforcement and a focus on the feelings and emotions which are driving bad behaviour. Proponents of gentle parenting argue that this approach is the most effective way to raise kids: emotionally-focused parenting raises calmer, happier children with increased self-esteem, emotional regulation, more empathy, and stronger parent-child relationships. Furthermore, research shows that kids who are frequently punished don't end up being better behaved. Gentle parenting’s critics argue that this approach relies on emotion as a substitute for authority and does not prepare kids for the real world where actions have consequences. Too much emotional self-awareness in childhood has resulted in high rates of anxiety and depression in young adults who cannot put aside emotions in order to carry out basic daily tasks. Arguing in favour of the resolution is Sarah Ockwell Smith. Sarah is a well known parenting expert and popular childcare author, who is widely recognized as being the founder of the gentle parenting movement. Arguing against the resolution is Anna Lussenburg, a professional child care and family intervention specialist. The host of this Munk Debates podcast episode is Ricki Gurwitz. Touch And Violence“In the 1960s, anthropologist James Prescott carried out a very large scale study of child rearing and violence across different societies. This week I spoke to Sarah Ockwell Smith, a parenting expert who has written 15 books on parenting over the course of her career. While we could've covered a number of topics, what I really wanted to speak to her about was the idea of gentle parenting and what it really is. Like you, I've seen Instagram memes and Tiktokers talk about gentle parenting, and most of what I saw left me more confused than enlightened. But speaking to Sarah really gave me a clear picture of what it means to be a gentle parent – and no, it doesn't involve mollycoddling your child and refusing to discipline them. I learned a huge amount during this episode, including how to deescalate a tantrum in the moment, and how best to go about stopping them before they even happen – something other parents of toddlers I'm sure could benefit from. Enjoy, and I'll be back next week with more. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ever find yourself saying the same thing over and over to your kids? The answer isn't to yell louder, as tempting as that can be. It might be more effective to consider the true capabilities of our kids at the stages they are at, and look at whether it might be our expectations that need a slight adjustment. Once you've done that? You're a “gentle parent.” Sarah Ockwell-Smith, parenting expert and author of The Gentle Parenting Book, sums up gentle parenting in three words: empathy, understanding, and respect. But gentle parenting isn't pushover parenting. Discipline is still possible– it's just focused on lessons to be learned more than on punishments. It's about shutting off our autopilot as parents and beginning a practice of remembering that a child is a child. In this episode we discuss How to set boundaries in this new paradigm (yes, still possible) How to model the behavior we want our kids to learn How gentle parenting helps our kids learn emotional maturity sooner. Today we had an amazing conversation with the wonderful author of 14 parenting books, Sarah Ockwell-Smith. Sarah studied psychology and after becoming a mother began to dive deep into the psychology and science of parenting. She has recently re-released her book: The Gentle Parenting bookIn this episode we started off by discussing the history of parenting advice and how it has evolved over time. Sarah explained how in the past, parenting was much more community-based, with family members and neighbors providing support and guidance. However, with the industrial revolution, families became more isolated and parenting advice began to be sold as a commodity. We then delved into current parenting trends, such as attachment parenting and positive parenting, and how these approaches have become more popular in recent years. Sarah emphasized that while it's great to have a framework to work within, ultimately a parent's own intuition is the most important part of parenting. We also talked about the importance of empathy and understanding in parenting, and how it can be challenging to stay calm and patient in the face of difficult behavior from our children. Sarah provided some great tips on how to handle these situations with grace and compassion.Overall, it was an incredibly insightful conversation and we learned so much from Sarah. My guest today is Sarah Ockwell-Smith, one of the world's leading parenting experts, having written 13 books and sold half a million copies. Her philosophy of gentle parenting is hugely influential in the motherhood WhatsApp groups of Great Britain and her latest book ‘How To Be a Calm Parent' has as much to tell us about how to look after ourselves, as it does about how to look after our kids. In this episode we talk about how to be calm, self-kindness and why being a busy parent isn't actually something to be proud of. Sarah mentions seven principles of being a calm parent in her book. I asked her about the first one, which is everybody can be a calm parent or a calmer parent:The number of parents I meet who believe that you're calm or you're not, they kind of view calmness as a fixed trait. So they'll look and think, "well, other people are calm". I'm not calm. It's kind of not worth me trying. So they're very much in the fixed mindset that calmness is something you have or you don't have. And if they don't have it, then it's not really worth trying. You know, that's not how they were born. But I really and truly don't believe that's true. I believe that everybody can be calmer. There are obviously things that get in our way. So what's happening in their life at the moment, depending on the sort of certain amounts of privilege you have and whatever, we can't all be like zen-calm gurus, but we can definitely improve on where we are at the moment.✔ Links:Sarah Ockwell-Smith on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/sarahockwellsmith/Sarah Ockwell-Smith on Twitter:https://twitter.com/TheBabyExpertSarah Ockwell-Smith:https://sarahockwell-smith.com/Sarah Ockwell-Smith's books:https://www.amazon.com/Sarah-Ockwell-Smith/e/B007L3YENI%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_shareSubscribe to Graham's Newsletter:https://www.grahamallcott.com/sign-upOur Show Sponsors: Think Productive - Time Management Training:http://www.thinkproductive.comUseful links:https://www.grahamallcott.com/linksEdited by Pavel Novikov:https://www.linkedin.com/in/pavelnovikovf/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

When we first become parents there are tons of books and advice for us to follow in the baby years and even the toddler years. As our kids age, however, it seems that all the parenting experts start to fade away. They don't dare touch the older children until perhaps the teenage years. Yet our tweens - that delicate age around 8 to 13 - is crucial to how we will face the teenage years with our children. The challenges that can come with this age can set the stage for how we will approach potentially even more tumultuous times in adolescence, but many parents feel lost at sea as they face these years. This week I had the joy of talking to Sarah Ockwell-Smith who many of you will know for her work in infancy and toddlerhood, but who has filled the much-needed gap for us parents of tweens with her new book Between. From connection with our tweens to anxiety to social activism, we delved into some of the key areas that parents need to be aware of when it comes to parenting tweens. And as always, it comes with the humour and honesty that Sarah brings to everything she does. Today is a guest post from our Certified Coach, Maru, from London. Two of the most popular US and UK gentle & respectful parenting guides (Sarah Ockwell Smith and Janet Lansbury) are not big fans of EC (but what I’ve found is that they have a very superficial understanding of it).  What could be more respectful than responding to your baby’s non-verbal communications? With everything happening around the world today, it’s time to become more open minded about what is normal in other cultures. Today she shares more about this very important observation: that elimination communication is THE most respectful practice of natural parenting. Sarah Ockwell-Smith Sarah Ockwell-Smith is a well known parenting expert and a highly regarded popular parenting author who specialises in the psychology and science of parenting, ‘gentle parenting’ and attachment theory. Born in Bedfordshire, England in 1976, Sarah Ockwell-Smith is a mother of four school aged children, three boys and one girl. Sarah lives with her family, cats and numerous ducks and chickens in a 350 year old cottage in rural Essex. After graduating with an honors degree in Psychology, specialising in child development, she embarked on a five year career in Pharmaceutical Research and Development, working with clinical trial data, until she became pregnant with her first child in 2001. After the birth of her firstborn Sarah retrained as an Antenatal Teacher, Hypnotherapist/Psychotherapist, Developmental Infant Massage Instructor and Birth and Postnatal Doula. Sarah now works as a parenting author, writer and coach, with a particular interest in child sleep. Many refer to Sarah as an Attachment Parenting expert, however Sarah herself does not like this term as she feels it may ostracize many parents from learning about more gentle parenting techniques. She prefers instead to promote ‘Gentle Parenting’, which she feels is more appealing to the mainstream with less perceived restrictions and rules. Sarah is also the co-founder of Gentle Parenting. Episode highlights How Sarah balances work with family life. Sarah's new book The Second Baby Book The limited information currently out there from birth until 3 years old How we should replace the word “jealous” with grieving in relation to elder children’s experience of a new baby arriving. Sarah suggests we need to change our expectations with second time mums – be realistic Self care as being kind to yourself Sarah's book The Gentle Eating Book from a psychology point of view (this is a discussion about behaviours - we don't cover nutrition for children specifically in this episode and Alison does not currently specialise in children's nutrition in her clinic) Sarah suggests the approach is not to change the child but to change yourself (as the parent) and your relationship with food Sarah shares her own disordered relationship with food which she relates back to her childhood. Why Sarah does not recommend praising children for eating Sarah's next book she is writing on preparing children for starting school.   Relevant links Sarah’s website, Instagram and Facebook Group Sarah’s new book The Second Baby Book is available here.   Disclaimer The information and reference guides in this podcast are intended solely for the general information for the reader/listener. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sarah Ockwell-Smith is the mother of four children and a highly regarded parenting expert whose work and expertise has been featured in major media including BBC News Magazine, WebMD, Buzzfeed, as well as national television and radio. She has a BSc in Psychology and has also undertaken training in Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy. A member of the British Sleep Society, Sarah specializes in gentle parenting methods as well as the science and psychology of parenting. She is co-founder of the GentleParenting website (www.gentleparenting.co.uk) and writes a popular parenting blog at sarahockwell-smith.com. “That’s the beauty of Ockwell-Smith’s guidance: she’s low on judgment and high on helpful insights into why your kid can go from angel to monster in 10 seconds flat. But what’s truly thought-provoking is Ockwell-Smith’s view that most common discipline methods don’t work. This is a handbook for end-of-their-rope parents looking for a fresh approach to discipline.” —BookPage If you do a quick google search of “discipline” relative to children in the news, you’ll see recent studies show that punishment such as spanking has no benefits, and can lead to negative outcomes such as aggression, social issues, and mental health problems. Conventional approaches to discipline such as rewards & praise, punishment for bad behavior, etc. often don’t work and can even lead to more frustration, resentment, and power struggles at home and in the classroom. In her new release GENTLE DISCIPLINE: Using Emotional Connection – Not Punishment – to Raise Confident, Capable Kids (On Sale August 29, 2017), popular parenting expert Sarah Ockwell-Smith helps parents (and educators) first understand why children misbehave so they can then address the root of the problem, and how to respond in a way that is effective, gentle, and conscious (view the complete press kit here for more info & suggested talking points). Among other things, Ockwell-Smith is available to discuss: · The science of why and how children behave and learn, including common psychological and physiological behavior triggers to look for; · Why modern-day methods in childcare and education, such as motivating kids to do better or punishing bad behavior, are often off the mark and ultimately ineffective; · How to overcome our own parenting demons and manage our emotions, particularly anger and rage; · Why low self-esteem might be the root of your child’s undesirable behavior and how to help. Gentle Discipline focuses upon teaching and learning – for both the child and the guardian – in a compassionate, respectful, and mindful way. Whether looking to explore how discipline methods are often at odds with the way our children’s brains develop, how best to reinforce gentle discipline at home when school discipline tends to undermine parent efforts, or coping strategies for dealing with parenting anger, frustration, or despair, Sarah Ockwell-Smith can address it all.
