Whether you're navigating combat zones, high-stakes leadership, or the raw emotions of parenting, this conversation will give you the tools to find stillness in the noise — not after it. Ep: 090 - Integrity & Personal Growth: How Keeping Promises to Yourself Changes Everything

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 27, 2025 66:40

We all like to think of ourselves as honest, but integrity goes way beyond just telling the truth. It's about doing what you say you will—especially when no one's watching. And let's be real, how many times have you promised yourself you'd wake up early, hit the gym, or finally start that big project… only to bail on it? In this episode, we dive into why integrity is the foundation of personal growth. When you consistently keep your word to yourself, you build self-trust, confidence, and momentum. But when you break those little promises—hitting snooze, skipping workouts, making excuses—you quietly erode your own belief in yourself. And that, more than anything, is what keeps people stuck. We'll unpack: ·      How self-trust fuels success in every area of life ·      Why small breaches of integrity matter more than you think ·      How cognitive dissonance and self-sabotage keep you stuck ·      Practical steps to strengthen your integrity muscle ·      Integrity and personal growth ·      Self-discipline and success ·      Building self-trust ·      How to develop integrity ·      Follow through on commitments Integrity isn't about perfection—it's about alignment. When your actions match your values, everything in life flows more smoothly. So, if you're tired of spinning your wheels and ready to start actually following through, this episode is for you.

Imagine a broke guy saying, “If I had a million dollars, I'd start my dream business and finally be successful.” Sounds logical—except he'd probably just blow it on a sports car and an espresso machine he never uses. Why? Because success isn't about what you have—it's about who you are. Most people think life works like this: Get the stuff → Do the things → Become the person. But it's actually the opposite. The people who succeed don't wait for external proof before they take action. They step into the mindset of a successful person first, act accordingly, and the results follow. It's like waiting to feel fit before you go to the gym—nonsense, right? Instead, you start moving, eat better, and over time, healthy choices become natural. When you stop waiting for the right conditions and start embodying the traits of the person you want to be, everything changes. Join your hosts as they expand on this shift in mindset that has been so effective for both of them in generating the lives they love. Loved this episode? "Our intention creates our reality” - Wayne Dyer In this action packed episode, your hosts cover daily routines and practical steps that can be implemented into your day immediately.  Melon and Mike share a conversation based around practices to gain mental clarity and focus throughout the day.  How can we consciously define how we show up in life- so that we can be in action taking the necessary steps when needed? Having the ability to put yesterday behind us- extracting the lessons, and especially savouring the blessings we have been given- allows us to have our full focus on what is ahead of us.  Finding our blessings allows us to manifest a state of gratitude- which is essential to shift our energy into positivity when things are hard. From a positive energy state, we can all start to see pathways for actions that will make the difference we need:- it can allow us to escape when we feel "stuck". Mike and Melon share what works for them in their lives- and challenge you to apply some of these steps in your own day.  Let us know what works for you- whether your practices are similar or different. Last episode we started a conversation series about Achieving the Goal. The first episode was about gaining clarity on your individual goal- your personal “why”. This week we are starting to look at how we build teams that can achieve at the top levels.  Join Mike and Melon as they share from their decades of shared experience inside military aviation and special forces units about building teams that excel.  Working towards excellence involved building individuals and teams along the journey through the four levels of competence: Unconsciously incompetence. You don't know that you don't know how to do a task. You haven't tried yet.  Consciously incompetent. You have tried, and now you know you can't do it.  Consciously competent. You have pushed through the sticking point, past the fun stage and have built a solid foundation.  Unconsciously competent. You have worked to the stage where you can do the previously difficult task with only a fraction of your full attention.  How can we build teams that reliably work through sticking points where most would fail? These lessons are applicable to professional groups, sporting teams, families and personal relationships. Melon and Mike share from their experience in all of these areas.  Let us know where and when you have built world beating teams and how you worked through the tough times.  We would love to hear your thoughts!  Goals for 2024: -100 Ratings on Apple Podcasts -50 Written reviews on Apple Podcasts -500 followers on FB, IG & YouTube #PBC #PushingBackChaos #Podcast #HMG #HeroesMediaGrp #Veterans #goals #Transition #Military#aviation #Operationonceinalifetime #training #StayPositive #Positivity #specialforces #teamwork #team #leadership #growthmindset Learn more about your ad choices. Well, this one is going to be different. For the first time on PUSHING BACK CHAOS, we talk about a very powerful topic: FAITH.  What is it exactly and what does it mean to you? This week, Mike welcomes our special guest and owner of Heroes Media Group, Adam Bird. A great friend who is like family and the whole reason our podcast even exists.  Mike and Adam ask some upfront and hard questions on faith and where they stand with it, how it has changed their lives, and address the conflict that exists between faith and what the world tells us to believe. This is not an easy one, but it is a welcomed one. We think about daily life and how hard everything can be. We look at the world as it is filled with chaos, war, confusion, and misinformation. Where do we go when we feel lost in all of it? Who do we talk to? Where is the truth? Why do I even exist?  Here at PUSHING BACK CHAOS, this is exactly our purpose and what we believe is true. To serve others, to make our communities better, and to be the best leaders, warriors, mentors, and friends that we can be. What does faith mean to you? If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don't have to be pushed. The vision pulls you. -       Steve Jobs The term “vision” is thrown around a lot in the context of organisations and leadership. What is meant by this umbrella term? How important is it? How can we create a compelling and effective vision? How can this vision be sustained in the inevitable difficult times that will come to all of us? Mike and Melon are continuing their exploration of leadership- as it occurs in military aviation and special forces, as well as in families, sporting teams and community groups. This week they define vision- the overarching north star or reason for the organisation's existence. It shouldn't just shape strategies, but also the values and principles of the team that guide the way there. How can we build a vision that motivates and draws us forward effectively? How can we get buy in from the people in the team? Your team contend that there has to be an open forum, where a consensus can be formed together, and that achievable goals can be set. The difficult task of sustaining the vision when the chips are down is also covered. The example of Churchill during WW2 is offered- constant communication and reinforcement that serves to maintain the long term effort through the short term hardship.      It's been said that in life, we go through seasons. Seasons of growth, relationships, wealth, development, etc. What about leadership? Are there periods of our lives where leadership evolves? When do roles and responsibilities change? What and when are they? How will we know? In this week's episode, Mike and Melon comb through the seasons of leadership. Using personal experiences, they equate the seasons to those of the world: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. They break down each, describe their characteristics, and how they assimilate to your position, discuss the “flags” that happen for you to realize the change is taking place, and then the importance of accepting the evolving change that is required for growth and not be so committed to never letting go of that season. Although everyone's timeline is different and unique, it is healthy to have a good reference to utilize when trying to identify your “purpose” as a leader as you move throughout your career and family.   Have you experienced this? Have you ever wondered “Am I supposed to keep doing this or is there something else I should be doing?” Does this example resonate or help you? Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.  -       Melody Beattie Life throws up challenges for all of us. The challenges ARE life. There is no escaping them. How can we work through these and manifest our best selves to create the life we want to live? Mike and Melon are certainly no strangers to life's big challenges- special forces training, operational deployments, finding love, parenting special needs family members, moving a family around the world… These and many more challenges are part of their lives.  In these hardest times, both Mike and Melon have found their way through to being their best selves when they have maintained a state of gratitude. Focusing on the blessings in our lives shifts something for all of us- it has us find the creativity and strength that we need to find solutions. Building integrity- treating your word as your bond- has been the only way to have a foundation to stand on when moving forward in the world. An element of this is restoring integrity when the inevitable breakdowns occur- making things right with the people affected. When we face the big challenges- the times when we are suffering- but we are able to maintain both gratitude and integrity, we access our highest states of capabilities. This will have us move from failure to success when we need it most. One thing that does separate us veterans from civilians is our community & the willingness to help each other in our times of need. This is one of those examples. We should always be able to lean on & rely on each other as we did in the field, in the fleet, or in the skies above to achieve our life objectives.  As the great Winston Churchill said: “Don't ever give in and don't ever give up!” Do you know or are you a transitioning veteran? What challenges are there from you/their perspective? How was it handled? What tips would you like to offer? Some of us had easy childhoods and happy families. Some of us did not.  Some were exposed to serious early childhood trauma and substance abuse- and flirted with our own demons. Not all of us had the discernment and wisdom to change the trajectory our life was on and forge a path of providence. In this amazingly open conversation, you will be joined by Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Jimmy Carr- veteran of multiple combat tours with his beloved Yorkshire Regiment from his home in the United Kingdom. Jimmy shares the many challenges and life deranging experiences that he faced while growing up in England. He had to deal with serious family trauma and came very close to being overcome by a toxic environment. Jimmy fought through the “imposter syndrome” when he joined the UK's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and learned to base his career on the great regulator of military standards and values. You will hear of Jimmy's time with the US Army's 10th Mountain Division, and the growth and development of his integrity based leadership style. He met LT GEN Michael Howard, and never forgot his guidance that: Bad teams turn on each other. Good teams turn to each other. “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” -Marcus Aurelius This week we cover a topic that hits close to home to both hosts Mike and Melon. Recently, both have experienced physical setbacks that will effect their every day lives, which, as we all know can take a toll on our positive outlooks for the present and the future. So what do we do when this happens? How can we hold onto positivity? We prepare for the adversity and then we face it as our best version. When adversity shows up at your doorstep, we find ourselves asking “Now what do I do?!” That wave of uncertainty or fear sets in, and it begins to formulate possible outcomes or future's in our mind that we may not necessarily want, driving ourselves into a state of panic or uncomfortableness.  *A few things that we've learned along the way to help combat this, and to try to remain positive during adversity: -Accept your current reality. It may have been not what you planned, but it is happening. -Try not to focus on WHY this happened as much as WHAT you can do going forward. -Remember what you are still in control of, not what you can't control. -Aim to be in a state of gratefulness, for you may not have lost absolutely everything. How has adversity changed your life for the better? For the worst? What could you do differently next time you face it? Is it some thing you were incapable of doing or just afraid to do? Let us know! Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. -       Mark Twain If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,     But make allowance for their doubting too… -       Rudyard Kipling “If” There are times when all of us find ourselves in a dilemma, unsure of which option to take. We have our own intuition about the best path forward, but this conflicts with a majority view. How do we proceed when at this crossroads? Do we blindly follow the herd? Do we blindly follow our instincts? Join your hosts as they discuss this thorny topic. How can we develop the discernment and judge correctly when it is correct to follow a widely held belief, and when it is better to follow our own decision? You will hear your hosts discuss how to develop your judgement based on principles and core values; how to listen to your intuition and inner voice; when and where to seek out expert advice. Sometimes the correct path is clear, but having the ability to hold opposing views while researching a position is one we need to develop, because we too are human and prone to error. Worse than we were expecting. Worse than we deserve. What do we do, what CAN we do then? Your hosts maintain that focusing on the area of life that is under our control is the only strategy that will work long term when the chips are down and life serves up one of those difficult hands of cards. Mike shares a story from his current Special Forces training- where things inevitably were harder and more miserable than planned, and yet he and his team were able to stick it out to achieve the objective. You will also hear the story of the birth of Melon's super premature daughter, Annie. By rights she never should have survived the delivery, but by focusing on research and understanding the situation, Melon was able to shift the outcome right at the critical stage. Do we solely focus on the family and not obtain all the resources required through work? Do we focus on our careers so that our families can be supported with resources? Are we being selfish? Are we being selfless? So many questions. This week, Mike and Melon are joined by their great mate, Simon, who is also former Australian military. Listen in as they openly and honestly discuss the questions above. These three men have chosen a life of service for the greater good but found themselves struggling at key points when it came to balancing family and their partners at home.  They share failures as men, partners, and fathers, but also share their lessons learned as they have taken the time to process those failures, and have the required conversations with their families to get to where they needed to be in a state of balance. PBC, EP: 055 - What makes you happy?

This week your hosts are joined by Cherie McFadden for an upbeat and positive conversation around happiness. What is it that makes you truly happy? Mike opens with a favourite quote- “Your best ability is availability”, from the famous NFL coach Bill Parcells. If you aren't participating, you aren't contributing- in your own life and with your loved ones. He shares feedback he received last year from a Korean War Veteran, William. William said that God must really love Mike, as he has given him so many challenges and hard times early in his life- so that he can have a beautiful life later. This theme of hard times leading to character development and gratitude has been present over the last several conversations, and is echoed again here. What does make you truly happy? It bears thinking about deeply. We can spend money, energy and our most precious resource- time- pursuing things that in the end will not contribute to our happiness. You will hear the three people in this conversation as they open up on the things that make them genuinely happy- and it is not the pursuit of anything beyond reach for any of us. Essential elements for all three hosts centered on gratitude for the good things they already have, and most of all, for time with people they love. Listen to the end to catch Mike's Challenge, and make sure you let us know how you go completing it! Please subscribe and share our podcast. Let us know what you think with a review. We read all the feedback and love suggestions for topics you'd like explored. “The good is good. The bad is good as well.” How often do we find ourselves in an unplanned challenging situation that induces feelings such as pain, fear, and anxiety that slides us into a downward spiral that seems unrecoverable?  This week, Mike & Melon address the less than popular topic that challenges, hardship, and struggles are actually essential in the pursuit of a meaningful and fulfilled life. Lets face it, nobody wants to admit that someone or something that caused a massive setback actually helped you become the current version of ourselves. Giving credit to the one who cast the stone? Not the best option, right? Or is it? The guys open up and share some of their own life experiences such as Melon having a prematurely born daughter, to dealing with his wife's cancer, and his own setbacks in losing his father at a young age. Mike shares his own list of his most massive hardships with the death of his father, losing teammates, emotional breakdowns, facing death, divorce, and heartbreak; highlighting his first initial feelings with each & followed by the results of positive lessons & opportunities. How do you view failures, setbacks, and hardship in your life? Can you focus on the negative & the positive? Do you truly believe that everything that has happened up until this point has made you who you are now?  Grab pen and paper and get ready to write your own list! Ep: 053 - A Guide for Controlling Your Emotions

Join Melon, Mike, and Raf as they discuss the methods and steps they take individually to control their negative emotions from derailing them. The trio unanimously agree that feelings, even bad ones, shouldn't be repressed, but expressed.  More importantly, they should be regulated. We're all too familiar with those moments that negative emotions take us hostage and make a potentially bad situation, almost catastrophic.    Mike offers that we should always attempt to be the calmest person in the room, especially in the face of adversity. He uses the “pausing technique” before he wants to reply with an immediate emotionally charged response. Melon similarly highlights the power in clarifying the emotion so that your partner can better understand. In doing so, it will empower you to learn the lesson from what you're feeling, rather than allowing the undesired behavior to arise.  Finally, Raf talks about the importance of understanding how to control your physiology and trying to “get ahead of it”. Everyone has their own unique way, his is usually deep breathing and working out.  How do you control and navigate around negative emotions that can overwhelm you? Ep: 052 - The Circle-Why and how to create meaningful relationships

“Sometimes God gives you exactly what you want in order to see if you can handle it.” We all will experience good times and bad times. They are etched into our story of life and we have very little control over them. They can either make us or break us, but we do not have to experience them alone. What we do have control of is who we allow to be a part of our circle and what role they play in it. We decide on the company we ultimately keep or walk away from. These are some of the most important decisions we must make in our lives. This week, Mike and Melon discuss the importance of maintaining a healthy circle of relationships and share some stout examples on how and when they have greatly benefited and overcame both incremental and massive challenges.  They unpack the characteristics of a truly healthy circle of mutual friends, family, and coworkers. Character, empowerment, encouragement, honesty, openness, personal responsibility, integrity, and trust are just a few. How have you overcame challenges within your own circle? Are they dependable? Do they push you to be better? Are they present during victory and failure? You'll hear how he has been growing and developing his team as they work through their training program. At times all of us will face challenges and headwinds. When we are the ones finding it hard, our friends, family and community all can provide the key support we need. Conversely, all of us will also fall into those roles when people around us have their hard times. Among other aspects, the importance of having a safety net, or building a net is covered, along with an example of the recreation of purpose as demonstrated by veterans Mike encountered.  Let us know how you have dealt with hard times yourself, how you have assisted others, or how you have seen it done effectively.
