Arwen Becker highlights women from different areas of study, ethnicities and backgrounds, who openly share with her one of the worst moments in their life. They go back to that rock-bottom moment, how it was overcome, what she learned and how beauty was brought forth from those ashes. When others crumbled, she persisted. Women are experts at handling adversity and severe challenges. When her back is against the wall and all reasonable options have been exhausted, all that is left is her sheer will to pull herself out of bed one more time and to charge forth like Joan of Arc. She is a victorious, strong, determined woman who overcame what others believed would be her undoing. Arwen Becker is a National Speaker, Author, Entrepreneur, Wife, Mother and Athlete, but in the valleys of her life, she battled many life-altering challenges ranging from; growing up in an alcohol and pornography laden home, abandonment, financial devastation as a child and adult, betrayal, imposter syndrome (just to name a few). She found freedom in vulnerability when she began to share her hurt, short-comings and failures, and desires other women to experience the same. Talking through these truly tough moments, Arwen knows you will find hope in the inspirational and empowering stories of these women. You are not alone, and your brokenness is a gift to you and, more importantly, others you meet in the future. She Handled It, So Can You!

Just when she thought that 2021 had presented enough challenges to deal with, Arwen's left arm started going numb. In addition to finding out that both of her parents were diagnosed with cancer, and supporting them as best she could, now Arwen needed medical attention as well. After several hours of testing, the E.R. doctors thought Arwen had a blood clot or was potentially suffering from a heart attack before discovering that she had developed a rare condition called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. And if that wasn't enough, shortly after receiving this diagnosis, her entire household tested positive for COVID-19. Physically and mentally exhausted, she curled up, bawled her eyes out, and asked, “God, how much more can I handle?” And as you'd imagine, the answer was she can handle all of it. In this episode, Arwen explains how “she handled it” and why she's decided to take a pause from the podcast, how her faith carried her forward in a very challenging year, and the beauty of letting go of expectations to become the person she's truly excited to be. She was selling advertising to huge corporations and in 45 national publications, but she was selling her soul in the process. She wasn't sleeping. She stayed up all night thinking about the next sale, what she could do differently, all the ways she was failing, and why nothing would ever be enough. The more she pushed, the more her body acted up–and eventually, she couldn't pretend anymore. When Katie left corporate life, she found herself in the depths of overwhelm, depression, and illness. In her healing, she created the b.nourished program–an executive wellness program designed to foster mindfulness, peace of mind, and productivity influenced by her personal recovery and decades of research. She now helps entrepreneurs and executives get things done without coming undone. She has won the Top 50 Inno on Fire Award, and has spoken for many clients including Facebook, Swarovski, CVS Health, and United Way, among many others. At 10 years old, Arwen Becker was thrilled to have the very rare opportunity to jump off the high dive after swimming practice. As she waited on the top step for her teammate to jump, she lost her footing and fell onto the concrete 15 feet below. The entire swimming class screamed in horror at her crumpled up body lying on the floor. In the middle of the chaos, Arwen was amazed to discover that she didn’t break her leg or hit her head. However, she quickly realized by what she saw, that her wrist was obliterated. As paramedics prepped her for the ride to the hospital in an ambulance, she wondered if the joy of the moment was worth the risk to her athletic career. When she was 23 years old, Fahren Johnson learned that she was born of rape to a mother who was institutionalized with severe paranoid schizophrenia. Her mother’s condition resulted in Fahren being a ward to the state with no contact to her biological family. From there, she bounced from home to home in the foster care system which eventually led to her being molested at a young age. Years later, as she put the pieces together of her own story, Fahren learned that her adoptive mother Helen - who was her anchor and a pillar in the community - had also been a victim of sexual abuse. It wasn’t long before she started to understand her fears and became focused on putting an end to generational trauma from defining who she is or who she could become. Now, Fahren is a Senior Program Officer with the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation. She’s a speaker, musician, an author, and is passionate about anything related to community and youth development. She is currently overseeing the amazing Whole Child initiative which promotes long-term development and success to all children. She’s a mother of four and grandmother of three, and has had an incredible marriage to her best friend of over 25 years. In 2009, when the Becker’s 4-year-old cat, Lewis, was attacked leaving him with a broken jaw, the entire family faced a very difficult decision; find a way to fund a $5,000 bill in the midst of the greatest financial difficulty of their lives and with no guarantees, or put him to sleep. The commitment and determination of their 12-year-old led the way to the seemingly irrational decision to go ahead with surgery. But Lewis wasn’t just a cat, he was the connection to a life ended prematurely from cancer. If you’re an animal lover then you’ll probably agree that our pets are also members of the family. About five years into the marriage, when she asked for help from family, the message was disheartening, “You're married, you need to go fix your marriage. It's not about you.” Even law enforcement believed the lies that her ex-husband was telling them. Questions would mount; when do I count? How am I not part of that equation? Why is my safety not being taken seriously? After years studying body language and performance, she realized she was betraying her body’s own message of what acceptable treatment was and what she was allowing in her own life. She knew better. As much as she wanted to get him help, she was doing it at her own detriment. Overcomer Playlist Recommendation Can't Stop The Feeling - Justin Timberlake Pearls of Wisdom Why real self-care really has to do with plugging into yourself in any given moment, not just for big decisions but small ones, and really checking in to make sure that you have your finger on the pulse of what you feel about something. Why you need to begin to listen to and honor yourself, and make decisions from that standpoint intuitively. You have to think about what story you're telling yourself. The problem that you're having is not based on what someone said or did or the problem itself. It's based on the story that you're telling yourself. What true worth is - infinite, intrinsic and immutable. Your job is to align with it, not to try and prop it up with how you look or how you feel. Growing up largely invisible to her parents, Alayne Reesberg learned autonomy at a very young age. Yet at home she was constantly surrounded by books, which filled much of the void she felt with information and knowledge of the world at large. She discovered very early on that this insatiable curiosity she had to learn would provide her much of the direction and insight she would need as she faced significant moments of change in her life – change that would eventually lead her to reinvent herself time and time again. Alayne is a catalyst for change and a master of reinvention with a gift for distilling ideas down into tangible beauty. She served in the South African Foreign Service, held a post at the UN, and worked at the South African embassies in both DC and London. She also was a negotiator in a UN broker process that ended an 18-year civil war in Namibia and Angola, and played a major role in the first democratic elections in South Africa after the release of Nelson Mandela. After working as the executive producer for global events at Microsoft, Alayne returned to South Africa, where she was the CEO of a global project based in Cape Town. Today, Alayne joins the podcast to talk about the power of taking risks, being brave, and what it means to truly reinvent yourself throughout every season of life.
